After purchasing and listening to this CD, I decided to give it to my daughter as I thought it was terrible. Next time I will purchase something I know.

Reinventing the Reinvented Wheel

It seems that the newest flavor of rock & roll in the 21st century bears a strong resemblance to the origins of popular music itself: folk. Whether it be with pianos, organs, banjos, or acoustic guitars, the DIY attitude of the indie musician has truly infected the seemingly-unkillable beast otherwise known as Mainstream Rock. Just take a look at the number of popular artists touring the globe and you'll agree: retro is the new black.
Enter Mumford & Sons, the latest sensation from across the pond. They dress like train conductors and play old-timey acoustic music. But are they deserving of the hype and buzz they've generated over the last few years? Sure, they're talented; that much cannot be denied. But are they truly worthy of the praise heaped upon them by the music press? I think not.
Before you start with the angry comments, please understand: I listened to this album several times, and I did enjoy it, but it didn't sound fresh to me. In fact, it sounded a bit like a rip-off. Listen to an Avett Bros. album, and you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about. The Avett Bros. have helped to create the sound that Mumford & Sons are taking to the bank, which, to me, seems criminal. For one, the Avett Bros. write better songs. MUCH better songs. To take my point even further, the Avett Bros. play their instruments better and fully utilize their influences into something fresh and original. To quote Marcus Mumford himself: "We're just mediocre, fat English musicians. But we try hard."
And try hard they do. While underwhelmed by their debut album, I hope that the band's "try hard" work ethic will allow their music to grow beyond sounding like a cheap knowck-off of an already-established artist. Meanwhile, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

It's been a while since such special artists like Mumford and Sons have come along.
The first song I heard was the track Awake My Soul which was being used for an advertisement for a telivision show. I was so entranced by the song that I forgot what even happened in the video. The lyrics and melody struck a chord inside of me that I didn't even know existed. I simply had to buy this album.
Marcus Mumford's voice is so raw and honest that it penetrates my core and pulls at my heart. Combine that with painfully beautiful lyrics and you get an absolute masterpiece.
All of their songs display this enchanting combination, but if one wants to get a taste for what they're in for, I recommend the tracks White Blank Page and Winter Winds. The latter, a song about the internal struggle of love, is one of my favorite. The last song, After the Storm, hammers the album home with the lyrics, "But there will come a time you'll see/With no more tears/And love will not break your heart/But dismiss your fears/Get over your hill and see, what you find there/With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair."
Give them a chance; this is one thing I cannot stress enough. Often times when people hear the word "folk" they run away. But this band combines folk with an Irish rock twist, creating a unique one-of-a-kind sound.
Buy their album and soon enough you will be recommending them to your friends and singing along at the top of your lungs just so you can feel the immense power of their message.

Mumford and Sons are what was missing from my life

It's been a while since a new band caught my attention and then earned my love.. but Mumford and Sons are definetly worthy of both.
This album has since bumped off The Dead Weather's "Horehound" from my top five favourite albums.
To put it simply, Marcus Mumford's voice not only rips right through me, but digs at the pit of my stomach and gets buried inside my skin. It's rough and raw and grinding.
There's so much music, so so so much that it's like food for your ears.
The lyrics are amazing.. especially on "I Gave You All" which is also my favourite track. If you're thinking about checking them out I'd suggest finding "White Blank Page." It's what I first heard of them and it gives you a good taste of what you're in for.
For a debut album this one is simply amazing, and I can't wait to hear what they'll put out next. These guys are definetly underrated because they have something special that I haven't heard in music in a long time. They have a lot of heart.
Also check out their music videos, they're especially beautiful and fitting to their music.

I had only heard one song off this album, which I liked very much, so I decided to purchase the album. Wow - what a great buy it turned out to be! This is probably one of the best albums of 2009. It is absolutely fantastic. Mumford & Sons have a unique sound that is very interesting and ear pleasing. If you are AT ALL into indie/folk music you have GOT to hear this album.

I rarely buy entire albums. Usually I just buy individual songs since many of the artists out there produce one-hit albums. I am very glad I bought Sigh No More from the UK band Mumford and Sons. The entire album, start to finish, is excellent. This is the band's first album and is a great mix of rock and folk music. I have listened to the entire album dozens of times and it gets better every time. If you have not listened to this band yet I recommend you do!

I first heard "Little Lion Man" on an indie/new music station by my house. I loved how upbeat it was and the lyrics were awesome! I never really thought about if they even had any other music until David Dye introduced another of their songs on Live at the World Cafe last week (White Blank Page). Now they have an album out! I can't wait to hear more music from them
