Could be the best movie of 2016. Absolutely charming. From the director of Once & Begin Again comes his best movie so far. Fans of 80's pop and The Commitments should love this. A 10 out of 10.

    The Best Movie of 2016

Director John Carney (Once, Begin Again) is forty-four years old. He was born in 1972 making him thirteen or so in 1985. His latest film, Sing Street, about a boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980's who escapes his strained family life by starting a band feels remarkably autobiographical. Not knowing if this was the case or not before seeing the film (doing a little research reveals it in fact is) I could feel this sense of closeness, of passion for not only the time period and the music that is so evident it's contagious, but in the feelings these characters are actually feeling. In other words, it is beyond evident that Carney, who also wrote the screenplay, experienced much of what is on screen here himself. To accompany these feelings Carney is attempting to resurrect from his childhood is the music of that decade as well. With each of these moments we have a song or a lyric that elicits the grander emotion, the nostalgia-tinted adoration for the promise that youth holds and it is in these elements that Sing Street transcends being more than a simple coming of age story. Sure, on the surface the film could be described as a typical coming of age tale that features a boy trying to impress a girl by playing music and there are of course elements of those types of stories present here, but Carney utilizes such tropes in a fashion that they come across as pure magic. Through the eyes of this child of the eighties we are witness to not only his first love and the experience of him learning, picking up information and ideologies from those around him, informing the person he will become, but we also catch glimpses of the weight of adulthood, the realization that our ambitions can be greater than our inherent talent, and that the best parts of life can be those we leave more to mystery than those we come to know too well. Sing Street is a layered and complex film about adolescence and yet you never feel the weight of such themes because you're too busy being wrapped up in the infectious and heart-warming music the characters create from these circumstances.

I can't recommend this one highly enough. I've been buying copies to give to friends and family. It's an Irish indie that only got a limited release in the U.S. but deserved a wide release and big promotional push. The quick-pitch summary is Conor, an Irish teen in the mid-80s, forms a band to impress a girl, but it's so much more than that. It's got the heart of a classic John Hughes movie. And the soundtrack, a mixture of songs from the era (The Cure, Hall and Oates, Motorhead, et al.) and spot-on originals co-written by director John Carney and Gary Clark (the songwriter behind 80s/90s power pop hit-makers Danny Wilson), is perfect. You'll want to own it on vinyl. "Rock and Roll is a risk," says Conor's brother partway through. Watching Sing Street? No risk at all. It's the best movie you'll see this year.

To be completely honest with you, I watch a lot of movies and try to see everything that comes out, and Sing Street is the best movie I have seen so far in 2016. The music in this film is PHENOMINAL! The score is all original and the songs were all written by John Carney, the director. This coming of age film is very well acted with great direction and an all out great movie. Everyone will find some connection with this movie and especially if you are a child of the eighties or just love eighties music then pick up Sing Street!

I wrote a longer review of the Blu-Ray and don't want to repeat myself, so I'll keep this one short and sweet: you won't see a better movie, or hear a better soundtrack, this year than "Sing Street." Director John Carney, his (mostly) young cast, and his songwriting partners have created the sort of movie that Hollywood has forgotten it ever knew how to make. That's ok; I'll just keep watching this one over and over again.

Anyone growing up in the 1980's will not only love this film but chances are they will be singing the songs written for the film for years to come. Fantastic cast, great script, spot on for the era. It makes me wish I could do some things over from that decade.

This movie is a quintessential purchase for anyone who loves to fall in love with characters and their stories! This movie is beautiful and beautifully done. The music is inspiring, the visuals are amazing, the story will keep you entranced and watching again and again. This is the ultimate pick me up, especially for music lovers who grew up in the 80's or fans of that era of music.

I was hearing rave reviews from Collider on YouTube and I rented the film via my Xbox One. What an utterly enjoyable film! I loved the music! The coming of age story appeals to the romantic in all of us(if a romantic resides within)! A lot of newcomers giving bravura performances! After I rented it digitally, I had to own it! Cheers!

If you liked "Once" and "Begin Again," you'll be pleased with "Sing Street," all three by John Carney. Just make sure you're prepared to "translate" English as spoken by the Irish. While hard to understand at times, it does not detract from the story, which is great!

An absolutely darling film that showcases the best of the 80's pop movement. Love the cast, and you'll be singing Drive It Like You Stole It for hours afterward!! By the maker of Once and Begin Again, it's a great film!!

It's not the movie that you'll never forget, but it is very touching, which movies don't do these days quite as well as they did during the golden age of Hollywood. So if you want your heart strings pulled and hanker to feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and this time you want to do it to a 1980's MTV video glam heyday beat, you'll never do it better than with SING STREET.

In a year of disappointing blockbusters, the indies are killing it this year! And Sing Street is one of the best films of the year. Deserves a larger audience. Give it a shot!
