I was expecting a little better graphics on this game, but it will do. I like the fact that the character can be the bad and good guy at the same time. You get the best of both worlds

A game worth saving!

This game is great. Im so glad it was saved from never appearing. This is not just another gta clone. This is a True Crime game through and through. The story is great. You play as Wei, an undercover cop trying to infiltrate the triads and bring them down. Much easier said than done. The story isn't original but the way it is told and acted is fantastic. You'll get invested in the characters and you'll play to find out what happens next.
You'll also enjoy exploring the city in the game as well. It's a realistic and busy city. It's fun to explore while on foot thanks to the focus on free running in the game and also driving in one of the many vehicles in the game. The driving controls are arcadey but aren't excessively so. Plus the vehicles have a ramming function that is perfect for slamming other vehicles off the road. It's awesome.
You'll mostly be using your fists in the game. Guns are pretty scarce at first. That's not a bad thing, however. In fact, I found it to be refreshing. Wei starts out with a basic move set but as you gain experience points with by completing triad and police missions he'll acquire more moves that look great and are fun to pull off. Fighting isn't very complicated. There is mainly just an attack button and a counter button. There are different enemy types however and Wei can grapple an enemy and perform one of many satisfying environment kills. It's a fighting system that reminds me of Arkham City and Assassins Creed.
There is a lot of variety in this game. I was learning new things about the game every time I played it. The first time I jumped off my vehicle to hijack another in a high speed chase was a great feeling. I loved this game because it was always throwing something new at me to tackle. Something that not many games do recently.
If I had any complaints about the game it it would be about the visuals of the game. They aren't bad but there are a few bugs. The characters have a plastic doll look to them. While animations look great you'll constantly see enemies clipping into walls and objects and there are only a few variations of each character type. Free running and movement can feel imprecise as well. You might climb a wall you didn't want to while running and you might not be able to target the enemy you want very quickly either. These aren't complaints that detracted much from my enjoyment of the game, however. I recommend picking this one up.

Great open world game

The game is great for what it is. It will obviously get compared to GTA IV because people force themselves to compare similar games. But it stands on its own as a very good game. Addictive combat, fun driving and it's always fun to shoot stupid people in video games. Obviously it's not as polished as GTA IV as far as graphics, but it's a delightful game for open-world loving gamers, or even third person shooting fans. Hell, it even has similar combat to the Batman: Arkham games, so that's a major plus.

What open-world games should be!

I thoroughly enjoyed Sleeping Dogs from start to finish. Roaming through Honk Kong as Wei Shen felt great, there were plenty of varied missions to complete (both main story and side quest), plenty of collectibles to find, and plenty of areas to explore.
One thing I really liked about the game was the combat implemented in this game. Unlike a lot of other sandbox games, this game's action does not focus solely on gunplay. There are plenty of confrontations that come up where hand-to-hand combat is the only option. The controls work very well and this creates a unique aspect to the typical sandbox action game.

What GTA IV and Yakuza should have been

I find it amazing how a virtually unknown gaming company (who has only made Mod Nation Racers before this) comes about to making a game like this. Albeit this game is not as vast content-wise as some other open world games, but there's still a good amount of stuff to do. Even though the last two chapters felt a little rushed and ended a little too abruptly, 90% of the main story line is very well done and kept me thoroughly entertained. This game also rewards good game play, as it has the fighting attack/counter system of the Batman games, responsive vehicle controls that allow you to weave and power slide around narrow streets, and it's in Hong Freekin' Kong!
One of my greatest challenges in this game was actually remembering which side of the road to drive on! Simple, I know, but old habits in the states are hard to break I guess! So far this game is 2012's best surprise. I wasn't expecting this game to be that great, I was slightly interested by the fact that it takes place in Hong Kong, but after playing the hell out of this game, it's obvious that I absolutely loved it!

This game is an open world game in the same vane as Grand Theft Auto. Except, instead of playing a criminal you are an undercover cop whose kung fu is very, very strong. Seriously, this games combat puts GTA to shame. It's nice to play the good guy for once in this kind of game and the Chinese setting is a good change of pace. Highly recommend!

This game is a perfect mash up of the batman arkham city fighting mechanics, max payne shooting, just cause stunts, and grand theft auto missions, with some hacking like splinter cell. all in all its a interesting game since it was scrapped at one time and then saved by sqaure enix.

This is a great open world game. My only negative is length, but it took me around 20 hours to complete everything in the game and earn the Platinum trophy.

Sleeping Dogs is maybe similar to GTA in concept but its execution is extremely different. It relies heavily on melee instead of gunplay and that is where the game shines. Also you can date Emma Stone so this is definitely worth a buy.

This is a solid game but after a couple hours in the missions start to become repetitive and the game has too many similarities to the GTA series with the missions. GTA series got old to me because there are only two missions in those games (Assasinate or delivery/driving). In this there are more but at the core of them all it is still similar. The only thing that sets this apart is the fighting system. It is much more elaborate and the various ways to use the environment help make it interesting. Overall, a good game, but not great.

My girlfriend and I rented this game from Redbox. I played about an hour of the game and got really bored. The graphics aren't the greatest and the story line drags. The only upside to the game is the free roaming! Other than that, it's an okay game if you're familiar with Grand Theft Auto.
