This was bought as a gift for somebody who had worn out their previous copy of the movie. I can't stand it, they love it. So 3 stars for a 50/50 movie.

Billy Bob Thorton nails this character and also does a great job directing this film. The movie gives great drama along with humor all rolled into one as Thorton's character is Karl Childress is dismissed from a mental hospital after a long stay when he killed his mother and her lover. Once on "the outside", he befriends a young boy and his mother. . Robert Duvall, John Ritter and country singer Dwight Yokum also star in this great film.

One of the great movies of our time. It will take you through a wide range of emotions. This is, in my opinion, Billy Bob Thornton's greatest role ever. The late John Ritter is incrediblly convincing, and Dwight Yokum plays the villain as well as anyone can, except maybe the coked out psycho hit man from Sharky's Machine.
