Soldier Blue is a 1970 American Revisionist Western film directed by Ralph Nelson and starring Candice Bergen, Peter Strauss, and Donald Pleasence. Adapted by John Gay from the novel Arrow in the Sun by T.V. Olsen. Supposedly taking place in 1877 this film is rated R and provides the first motion picture account of the 1864 Colorado Territory Sand Creek massacre, one of the most infamous incidents in the history of the American frontier, in which the Colorado Territory militia under Colonel John M. Chivington massacred a defenseless village of Cheyenne and Arapaho on the Colorado Eastern Plains. Released in August 1970, the film drew attention for its frank depictions of violence and is not for children or the squeamish. Although cut from its original 135 minutes to its now 115 minutes it still contains quite a bit of blood and guts specifically in its graphic final sequence. Worth a look for those of you who are interested in learning some true history. Since then, the site, on Big Sandy Creek in Kiowa County, is now preserved by the National Park Service. The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site was dedicated on April 28, 2007, almost 142 years after the massacre. On December 3, 2014, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper formally apologized to descendants of Sand Creek massacre victims gathered in Denver to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the event. Hickenlooper stated, "We should not be afraid to criticize and condemn that which is inexcusable. ... On behalf of the State of Colorado, I want to apologize. We will not run from this history." In 2015, construction of a memorial to the Sand Creek Massacre victims began on the Colorado Capitol grounds.

A good movie that tells the sad and tragic story of the Battle at Sand Creek. Peter Strauss plays a weasel trooper while Candice Bergen looks great.
