Sonic is an awesome movie. It’s worth the watch especially since Jim Carrey is in it.

Watched this as a late birthday celebration with friends. And yeah if you know what you're getting into you're gonna have a good time; a 90s esque road trip movie with a great character and innocent human characters. The main thing though is the jokes; weather or not you'll laugh that much, Sonic acting his usual hyperactive, over-talkative self, spouting pop culture references (which makes sense when you find out his back story...which is actually quite sweet is rushed), and Carrey acting OTT. The thing with alot of the joke sis that charecters acknowledge how "jokeish" of a statement their comment was, that or just snarking it off or groaning; it'll make or break it for you. But Sonic looks and sounds great and I love the little "adventure" (seriously ain't that much of an adventure) Marsden and Sonic have, and his wife has the thinnest characterization but is a sweet enough character. And once again is backstory introduction is very nice (I have no clue if it was based off the comics or some long lost game but if it was then sweet!) Oh btw that one joke about family movie night, I feel in love with this film already, that was my favorite line! And the people who watched it know what I'm talking about...and it's my next review ;)

I have to admit up front, I had pretty low expectations for this movie purchase. I bought it because my six year old granddaughter insisted that it was the best movie she'd ever seen, bar none. So I bought it on sale, and I must admit, watching it with her was a lot of fun. Her enthusiasm for the title character, an alien creature on earth that can move at speeds the Flash can't even imagine and looks like a blue teddy bear with a bad hair day, was infectious; but what I enjoyed most was watching Jim Carrey, as the villainous scientist Dr. Robotnik out to capture and dissect Sonic, chew through every scene with the manic energy only Carrey can bring. He's his own animated special effect. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic's human protectors are along for the madcap ride.

I love this movie. My son(8) loves this movie. My daughter(9) loves this movie. Even my wife loves this movie. If you have ever played and enjoyed Sonic the hedgehog games you will get a kick out of this movie. This is a fun light hearted family movie, if you want something serious don’t look here. A lot of times a video game movie like this doesn’t hit the mark but this one does. Jim Carey is so funny in this, it reminds me of his classic comedies. There are so many Easter eggs and throw backs to the Sonic games that as Sonic fans my kids and I were comparing notes on what we saw. I bought my step son(28) a copy. I bought us a copy. I bought my little cousin(18) a copy. I only heard good things, they all love it. I hope they make a sequel.

Sonic the Hedgehog is currently known for being one of the highest-grossing films of 2020 as well as one of the best video game movie adaptations of all time. But does it hold either or both of those titles by comparative default? The short answer is, yeah, kinda. It’s no secret either in fan or critical circles that the vast majority of video game movies suck the big one. The worst are childhood scarring and even the “best” of them are either laughably awful in their terribleness or so inoffensive that they’re “meh” at best. Sonic the Hedgehog is tough to place, but I would say that it falls in the latter category. First off, I would like to address the blue hedgehog in the room with Sonic’s initial and retooled design. Of course, I was in the camp that despised his initial design with his too-human looking teeth and eyes. When the announcement was made that he would be redesigned, I was relieved, and when the more game-accurate design was revealed, I was ecstatic. Whether this was all planned from the start is irrelevant to me, as I take it as a positive move of movie studios listening to fans who know better. I will admit, whatever else, that did more positively color my opinion of this film, for better or worse. The rest of Sonic’s character is, for the most part, fairly accurate to both what the games presented and all of the various other materials Sonic has appeared in over the years such as comics and cartoons. He’s arrogant, funny, wisecracking, full of himself, everything a fan could reasonably expect him to be. Ben Schwartz does quite well conveying all of that personality, although his voice sounds a touch too similar to the one he also uses for Dewey in the DuckTales reboot. Most of the human characters are forgettable bit parts, but they do fine for what very little the script requires of them. James Marsden has apparently still not learned his lesson about playing bland second fiddle to a talking CGI animal. The only other character that matters to both the plot and the audience is Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik. Firstly, I’m glad they went with the old-school OG name for the character, and not the Eggman name, which isn’t as iconic or intimidating. Carrey doesn’t 100% physically resemble the game character (except for a very brief scene at the end, which was appreciated), but he was great where it counted: being hilariously entertaining. This was a return to form for Carrey, and this was the closest to the laugh riot goofball he was in the 1990s. That nostalgic feeling of smiling at that kind of performance from him was worth the price of admission alone. The story, however, is where the film slides back into average territory. It starts off well enough, in Sonic’s world. We see a glimpse of familiar terrain and character designs (Sonic’s pursuers in the opening scene look like echidnas a lá Knuckles), but all of that is summarily whisked away from us as the same virus that infected movies like Smurfs, Fat Albert, and even the He-Man movie from way back in the 1980s rears its ugly head and drags Sonic down into disappointment territory. Franchises like those and Sonic, that are set entirely in a fantastical world completely removed from reality, are frequently butchered by Hollywood by moving them into our world. It may be so it’s more familiar, but I suspect that it is to save on set design and computer effects budgets. It’s much cheaper to have a He-Man movie set in Los Angeles than it would be to have the entire thing in Eternia. But such short-sighted thinking severely harms these films because the fans in the audience are completely uninterested in real world locations for these fantasy realms. We want realistic-looking visuals, not true-to-life settings and characters. I want to see Sonic run around Green Hill Zone from the games, not “Green Hills, Montana, USA.” Because of that location change, Sonic’s story of a fish out of water trying to get back home is such a boring and overdone plot, it takes me out of the entire thing, wishing for it to get to the next action piece rather than an actual resolution. Carrey and Schwartz’s performances are enough to pull the film back from being terrible, but not enough to push it into being that good. It’s watchable, even rewatchable, but by no means a great cinematic entry into the Sonic franchise. Like I said at the start, this may be the best video game movie out there right now, but when the competition is the Super Mario Bros. movie and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, that title is won by default rather than true merit. Still, Carrey’s return to form and the character redesign for Sonic are significant pluses in this film’s favor. In another environment, this movie would probably have fared far worse than it did. But 2020 being as it is, and the release window of this movie as it was, Sonic the Hedgehog was entertaining enough to be one of the best (and last) theater experiences of the year. It is skating by on its circumstances, but as a big fan of the franchise since my youth, that’s enough for me here. Final Grade: B-

You don't have to be a hardcore fan of the hedgehog to enjoy this movie, though there are little nods for those in the know. At its heart, though, this is a fun comedy/adventure with loads of charm that's a good time for all ages. Special features are pretty light, with a few deleted scenes and an interesting commentary track with director Jeff Fowler and Ben Schwartz (voice of Sonic himself).

The animation and casting was done phenomenally on this film. The Blu Ray has beautiful animation and colors. I wasn't expecting much watching this movie growing up playing the video games of Sonic I was familiar with who he was. I just didn't want to hype myself up just in case the film was a let down. The film is great a lot of laughs and great pacing. I would recommend it and would love to see more Sonic films in the future. I would recommend it for a family movie night. Everyone loved it in my household.

If you're complaining about a Sonic movie being aimed at kids, get a life. What were you expecting? It's a fun, sweet movie that takes you out of the real world for 90 minutes, like it was intended to do. Jim Carrey plays the heel really well and will probably get better in the follow ups if they make them. Lots of fun easter eggs for folks who grew up playing the games. Come on people. Lighten up. It's a Sonic the Hedgehog movie for crying out loud.

My whole family loved this movie! We saw it while it was in theaters and couldn't wait to watch it again. If you're a fan of sonic! you'll also love it. There is a lot of funny scenes with a bit of adult humor mixed in as well. Sonic is also cool in this movie. I also learned a new word "Rock-Connaissance" from this really awesome movie. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

At first when this movie was announced, I wasn’t excited because of the previous video game movies. After the delay because of the backlash of Sonic design, I can say this is one of the best video game movie ever made. The crew did understand the character and show how passionate they are. To any Sonic fan, you should watch this movie and see Sonic being brought to life.

Ok, at first I was not interested in seeing this movie, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and happy to say I own it. I don't want to give away anything but Jim Carey is just awesome in this film and even Sonic does not seem so foreign, which for a little blue hedgehog says a great deal. Great action, story and preview for the next film.

Not a whole lot of expectations for this due to the scary initial character designs but after all the effort to correct it gave it a shot. Definitely on the best video game movies and overall funny, action filled movie with a character who actually develops thru the movie. Even Jim Carrey is classic and has a good performance. Something the family can enjoy.

The Christmas gift that they would definitely love. We watched it in the movies and ofcourse from the way it ended we know to expect a part two. They enjoyed it so much! I just knew that this would definitely be great for their movie collection, dvd , Blu-ray and digital copy. Three great options for the home and on the go.
