Customers frequently mention the excellent sound quality and comfortable fit of the 1000X Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. Positive feedback also highlights the long battery life and user-friendly touch controls. However, some customers find the headphones to be a bit expensive and heavy. Noise cancelling on mic is poor

I chose these as a general purpose headset to both listen to music, and for voice phone calls in noisy environments. For the first case, a great headset.Worked really well on plane journeys. But, for calls, it was very poor. The mic got very confused in environments like coffee shops, amplifying the background noise and clipping out my voice.

Hi Thatwhitehatch, The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, or offices (near air conditioning, etc.) and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. We value your feedback and we will surely take note of this for the betterment of our products. ~Ralph sony_US

At the time of this review, these headphones were at sell for $250 which was an instant buy for me, and oh boy are these amazing headphones. The sound is great, theirs no over powering bass so if you're a bass headphones these aren't for you. These headphones having a balanced sound signature that sounds great! The noise cancelling is again, phenomenal, the ambient sound feature is amazon as well, it lets me hear everything around me whenever I have noise cancelling off. NFC is also a great touch, it allows me to easily connect my phone to it by just tapping my phone to the left ear cup. Touch controls on these headphones are great, its so much easier than reaching for buttons, I've gotten so used to the touch controls that I even tried using the gestures on my Jaybird x2's without even realizing it, that's how seamless it is. Overall these are a great alternative to the bose qc 35 with warmer sound and with better noise cancellation.

So I did a lot of research before choosing to pick the MDR1000X over the QC35 headset, however after not being able to charge the headset at all I am extremely disappointed. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but after trying two separate PCs, a laptop, multiple wall chargers and resetting I have decided to just return them. It is a shame as I know the sound is likely better with these than the QC35s, but if it doesn't work than it will be of no use on my trip.

Many will compare these to the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. It should be noted that Bose is known for their professional gear and their noise canceling headphones, which are quite good but not as good as audiophile headphone brands. They make their living on their pro gear brand reputation carrying over to their mediocre and overpriced consumer gear. (the small cube speakers anyone?) I have a lot of experience with Sony and their MDR-V6 (MDR-7506) cans are highly regarded.  I'm on my second pair, and had my first pair for 20+ years. They've been used for decades by all sorts of audio professionals. (radio station DJs, audio engineers, mixing, etc) These MDR-1000X ones are available in both black and beige, battery life is listed at 20 hours, and phone calls can be answered/ended with the right ear cup as well. Apparently one can pair multiple devices as well, per info listed here: http://amzn.to/2dg8IYR  The right ear cup audio control is quite frankly super cool, handy, useful, high tech, and whatever other awesome description you can think of. I've listened to both these and the Bose QC cans and I much prefer Sony's sound versus the overly colored Bose sound everyone is familiar with. These are well built and are comfortable on my large head. These are pricey but so far have been well worth the purchase.

Spent an enormous amount of time trying to get it to pair with bluetooth. Didn't happen. So I returned it and got the Bose. That isn't much better. Had to get an IT consultant to pair it. Then I went on a plane and could not use the wire jack (fitting too loose) to listen to TV. The price keeps going up and the quality goes down.

We purchased Sony - 1000X Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones - Grey Beige. The Sony Wireless Headphones would not connect with the Galaxy S6. We replaced them with Bose Wireless Headphones and they connected to the PC and S6 very easily. The Bose were the same price as the Sony.

Poor build quality - there are known and well documented issues with the MDR 1000X hinge breaking. When you're spending several hundred on headphones, you expect them to be robust. Would not recommend.

First let me say I am a Sony guy. All my TV's are Sony and love them. The Sony headphones would not sync up with my IPad and the controls on the side of the ear muff's did not work. Bose is a better headphone option.

    Best all purpose headphones available

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

These headphones, while expensive, are possibly the best you can purchase from any retailer for fulfilling multiple purposes. When wired they sound better than practically any other available pair of headphones unless you shoot for a pair of dedicated studio monitors or high end wired headphones which can easily run anywhere from $100 dollars to well over $500 and even higher depending on the brand, build quality, and specifications. The MDR-1000x are well balanced, not too bass heavy and not too tinny as well as being extremely comfortable for long periods. that said, you can get better sounding headphones if you simply want dedicated Hi-res headphones (which these are Hi-res) and if you like more bass focused headphones you may want to look elsewhere. As far as noise cancelling goes, these are on par if not better than the Bose QC35's albeit fifty dollars more expensive when not on sale. Having said that, the sonys sound better in every mode; noise cancelling on, off, wired, and over Bluetooth. Its possible they aren't quite as comfortable but the difference in comfort is negligible They have another distinguishing difference from their competitors and that is they don't look like advertisements on your head. They feature the sony name, but only faintly imprinted on the head band making it invisible from any sort of distance. The all black or tan finish on them makes them look more adult, or professional. If you feel that you want more brand recognition or want others to think you spent money on your cans, get bose, or beats, or any other brand that charges you to advertise for them. The only visible marking on these is the NFC logo on the left cup. if you want some multipurpose headphones, with great hi-res sound quality, with great Bluetooth connectivity, possibly the best noise cancelling, and comfort, you'd be hard pressed to beat these. yes there are definitely better sounding headphones out there, but as far I know there are no headphones that sound this good wired, this good over Bluetooth and are noise cancelling. There are some nitpicks though. These include a carrying case, but the case doesn't have room inside for the included cable, instead it has an outside pocket that you pretty much have to tear off to fit the cable inside of. Also the cable itself is wonderful, but it seems like sony designed the 3.5mm port on the headphones themselves in such a way that generic 3.5mm cables won't fit in it. The supplied cable clicks in the jack and makes a tight, snug fit. The other 3.5mm cables I own won't do this. They simply fall out. I'm not sure if its a defect with my set or an intentional design but I can see this being very annoying if I ever lose this cable. Another minor problem is the joints in the set are indeed somewhat noisy. I can't hear them move when I'm actively listening to music or audio, but If I move my head too much I can occasionally hear a dull creak during lulls in songs or breaks between them. its extremely minor though in my experience. I have worn these often while walking through an urban setting, deaf to the world around me, and its during these outdoor walking periods that its the worst, when my head is constantly in motion and the sun is on the plastic, but even then its a minor issue only made apparent between songs and with some focusing on the sound. In short, unless you want dedicated Hi res monitors and/or don't want to drop 300+ on a set of headphones, you will want these. They do pretty much everything you'd want a pair of headphones to do, and they do them very well.
