Customers frequently mention the excellent sound quality and comfortable fit of the 1000X Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. Positive feedback also highlights the long battery life and user-friendly touch controls. However, some customers find the headphones to be a bit expensive and heavy. Noise cancelling - The quality of noise cancellation of these headphones is superb. I've taken them on multiple flights and they have worked just as well as Bose NC headsets in canceling engine noise. I also use these at home when the windows are open and they effectively cancel out the street noise (live on busy street in NYC). They work excellently in providing a quiet and serene environment regardless of what's happening outside. Battery life - Excellent. I have yet to run down the headphones all the way. I don't doubt the 20-hour quoted battery life. When I was looking for noise cancelling headphones, I was fearful that I would be constantly running out of juice at inopportune moments or scrambling for batteries. Not so with these. Whether it's a long flight or just forgetting to plug them in sometimes, I've always been able to use them and charge them at my convenience - not because they have run flat. Connectivity - Good. I have paired these with my iPhone, iPad, and iMac. The pairing process is simple and worked the first time with all my devices. The only downside is that it does not support bluetooth multipoint - meaning that it can only be connected to one device at a time. So if I'm using it with my iPad and a call comes in on my iPhone, it will not switch to the iPhone automatically like some other bluetooth headsets. Switching devices requires you to manually disconnect from one device and connect to the other. So if you want to switch between devices a lot, you'll be making constant trips to the settings app. Special Note: On my iMac, the connectivity is poorer than my iOS devices. The sound quality is less good and there are connection drops sometimes. This appears to be caused by the fact that the iMac uses a Bluetooth headset (APT) protocol to connect to it by default. In order to get better audio quality, I had to download the Bluetooth Explorer app from Apple's Developer Portal and enable the AAC audio protocol over Bluetooth in MacOS.

    SONY MDX1000 Noise Cancelling Headphones

I still own the original consumer noise cancelling headphones and I've had two models after, these headphones offer equally the same level of NC performance but where I see an advantage, for me, are the customization and the feature that allows you to hear whoever is talking to you. The directional swiping is cool, takes a bit to get it down but it's easier than trying to remember where a play pause fwd and rev button would be and they're generally small. The other thing I like is the ability to enjoy HiRes audio tracks, which I've invested in quite a few over the last year as I own other Sony HiRes products. Look, you need to try these out, you have a 15 day return policy, longer if you're an Elite Plus member like me and you'll know if you want to keep them or not but I'm sure you will. If you fly, you definitely need these but these are also great for the office, train, bus or just everyday use. I can honestly say that these are worth the extra $50 dollars over the Bose but don't take my word for it, try them for yourself.

These are some of the best sounding over the ear headphones I've heard. These are super easy to pair up with any Bluetooth device. Once paired, the "touch" controls on the right ear piece are stellar. Think touch screen. Noise canceling works great, and palming the right ear piece allows you to temporarily pause whatever you are listening to, as well as the noise canceling, to be able to talk or hear without having to take them off. One issue I generally have with over the ear headphones is that when I'm wearing glasses, they can become painful. That is not the case with this set. The ear cups are super soft and block a good portion of noise even before NC is activated. One small issue I noticed is that there is a slight bit of lag with the Bluetooth when using them for gaming on my PC. Attaching the cord solves this issue, but obviously are no longer wireless. One last thing, make sure to have them powered on if you are using the cord. You can use the cord without powering them on, but the sound quality is nowhere near as with them turned on.

These are amazing headphones! The features including the noise cancellation and the right ear cup touch remote makes them stand apart from other headphones. As much as I love these headphones though I can only give them a four star rating because at their smallest setting they are still too large for my head and tend to slip occasionally. At first I did not notice it much but now whether sitting or walking they don't stay in place very well. Luckily for me the features outweigh a little slipping!

I've always invested in Bose headphones until I tried these babies on at BestBuy and I did a compare and contrast based on sound quality and comfort. MAN - these headphones are superb - not enough STARS to rate these beauties. I have to give it to SONY - they really mastered the NC feature and comfort when they created these beauties. Bose is definitely not competing here - they lost in every area - most important sound quality and comfort. Sony has always been superb in quality - but they outdid themselves a million times over with these amazing GEMS- perfection at its best. I applaud you SONY for giving me SUCH an awesome Christmas with these gorgeous beauties. I'm at a loss for words - SONY, I will invest in your product without a doubt or question. SUPERB performance - Great JOB!

decided to spend some extra bucks on a proper wireless headphone as wire has been a liability to me, mainly for daily commute and office use. was reviewing a lot of comments between this one and bose qc35. bose seems more popular, but i like 1000x control built into the headphone itself, and the noise cancelling optimizer idea. plus, the materials used are better than qc35. the packaging arrived is of great taste and quality. the sound quality is amazing out of the box (well, it is my first WIRELESS HEADPHONE). hear for two weeks, like the control, easy to use, exactly as advertised. the bluetooth range is long as there is no disruption when i was in the other end of the hall or the apartment. the battery life is long. once per week charging is enough for me. noise cancelling works, but don't count on it to block all noises on the streets. you can still hear cars approaching and leaving, especially during the silence between songs. but it totally blocks out talks if others are talking in the office next to you. haven't had a chance to use it on a flight. the only problem for me, as most of the reviews point out, is the discomfort on head after long time of wearing, e.g. two hours or so. i am wearing glasses, simply amplifying the problem. my work around is to loose it a bit. haven't tried qc35, so could not comment the comfort as most reviews. that is why i am not giving 1000x a perfect score. i also take product lifespan seriously. given its quality build, let's hope that it lasts LONG. only time will tell. yes, sony's product is on the pricey side. but it deliveries its promises. it is worth the money if you value its features.

Best wireless noise cancelling headphones around

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So, I've had a few sets of cans lately. I've had the Beats Studio 2.0 Wireless. I've had the Bose QuietComfort 35s. I've had the Beats Solo 3.0 Wireless. And finally I settled on the brand new Sony 1000X. First and foremost, the fit and finish on these headphones is phenomenal. I have yet to see another set on the market in this price range (sans Senheiser) that can touch Sony on build quality. It hits all the markets. The plastic keeps the weight down. The metal head band gives an air of sturdiness. The leather ear cans give really nice tactile feel. And the leather ear pads are well balanced in between firm and soft. Next, the noise cancellation on these is off the charts. I loved the NC in the QC35s, but this is another level in my view. The NC, here, is much better at blocking out conversation. Can any headphone truly block out voices? It's almost impossible. But the 1000x is a veritable isolation chamber with how well it does in that regard. There is that ever present faint hissing sound, but it's hardly noticeable. I particularly like the ability to raise my right hand to the right ear piece and cup it and allow for conversation to take place. What a fantastic little addition to the cans. Further, I've had good luck so far with the ability to filter through voice (noticed this working well in a subway and on a train so far). It's not perfect, but it works well when the voices are somewhat clear. The comfort level on these cans has been great. It blows the two Beats products out of the water. The Solo 3s, with the really freaking awesome W1 chip, just did not ever feel good on my ears. But that's me. I do not do well with on-ears (especially with tighter headbands like the Beats). The QC35s are probably the most comfortable headphone on the planet, but these really do come close. I'd give the edge to the Bose, but I think the 1000x beats it in just about every other area imaginable. I've worn them for extended time periods and I've never once gotten ear fatigue from them. That's a testament to the time and effort that Sony put in developing these. Battery life has been as advertised so far. Maybe a bit more. Getting around 20 hours or so a charge when used wirelessly. I have yet to ever use the cable since I have an iPhone 7+ (and, thus, no headphone jack). The Beats Solo 3 bests these, here, but only due to the utterly amazing W1 chip. That somehow enabled the Beats to get 40 or so hours of charge. Something I could never even get to since I returned the headphones after about 30 hours of use (I think the battery said it was only half way drained!). But I'm not going to dock the Sony for "only" 20 hours. That's still more than enough time for most any flight (and air port waiting),. And much more time than I'd need for my weekly commute. Finally, the sound quality on these is really good. This is where these shine. They are not too base heavy like the Beats. They don't sound tinny and harsh like the Bose. The mids are utterly superb. Easily (easily!) the best out of that group. I think that the soundstage is also the best in the group as well. I have no trouble picking out various instruments and other bits and pieces. I think my biggest disappointment with the Bose QC35s was the overall sound. It just sounded harsh to me (the mids were also completely muddled out somehow). Is this worth the $50 premium over the Bose and the $100 premium over the Beats? Absolutely. It's no question to me. This may be the easiest choice I have had to make for headphones in a long time. I'm glad that I saw these were available (I purchased them late last week on the first day that my local Best Buy had them in stock) before the return period on the Beats was up (yay for 30 day no questions returns!). Highly, highly recommended.

I received the Sony MDR-1000X finally. Note that there is a MkII version now so this is the model before that, but price is attractive. I actually really like the beige color. Here is my preliminary review. The fit is comfortable but a bit snug - probably to help the isolation. You can hear a drop in external noise when just placing them on head. But they may be a little uncomfortable for long periods of time. The audio fidelity is quite good although a bit too much bass in my opinion, and no way to control that other than from the source playing the sound. It paired up easily with my phone and laptop. When noise canceling is on, there is a low level "hiss" that comes in, but not a lot. I have to try noise canceling with different sounds, but I was shocked when I turned it on with just news on TV and the voice dropped a lot! Along with the isolation of just wearing the phones, it was impressive. The controls are pretty easy to use and a nice female voice announces when you turn things on/off. The side control for volume/next/prev works great. The wired connection sounds about same as Bluetooth and you do need power to use that, so if battery runs out you can't use them at all. So far pretty impressed!

These headphones are fantastic! The sound is so clear and full while not being overpowered. The gesture controls are intuitive and the button controls are simple to use. The bluetooth works flawlessly, I genuinely could not tell the difference between wireless and wired audio quality. The ear cups and head band are perfectly cushioned and the real leather is so soft you can wear these for hours without any issues. As for the active noise cancelling, I could not believe how much noise it actually blocked out. With noise cancelling and music on you really can't hear anything around you which is why the ambient noise option along with the quick attention gesture are great features to have.

Match this up with NEW Sony X800 streaming device with HiRes Bluetooth. Wow. Incredible sound quality. I've always been a Bose fan - but not any longer. These headphone are comfortable, highly adjustable, and HiRes audio is amazing. Noise cancelling is far superior than any other product. So impressed - this is my second Sony purchase this year, so much for only Apple and Bose being leaders - this is came changer for Sony. Love HighRes audio game changer when paired with HiRes source.

Since how this compares against the Bose QC 35 is what many want to know, here are my thoughts having used both. Music Audio quality- The Sony MDR-1000x is better than the Bose 35 hands down. Don't want to use all the technical terms about ranges and what not, but for what it's worth, if you want a great music listening experience, these are the headphones for you. Noise Cancelling- I wore the Bose QC 35 while playing music on the streets of Manhattan and to all intents and purposes I was in a sound cocoon, this is without fidling with the (non existent) controls . I did same with the MDR-1000xs on the streets of LA, it took me probably an hour and a half of tweaking the settings to get the same level of noise isolation, and I still don't think I've figured it all out. If you want a straight out of the box solution, go with the Bose, if you want to be able to tweak what you hear and how you hear it, and have the patience to experiment, go with Sony. Noise reduction in the real world seemed to be on par. Bells and Whistles- See above. The Bose is a plug and play device that's a one size fits all, the Sony is one which requires you to fine tune it. Having said that, I think the controls on the Sony are much better than those of the Bose. Price- Sony comes in at $50 higher. If you want more control of how you use your headphones, the premium is worth paying. If you want the path of least resistance, it isn't. Look and feel- The Bose feels lighter and is more comfortable based on the number of times I had to adjust each pair of headphones for comfort. When it comes to the 'coolness' factor, I think both are neck and neck, though I felt cooler with the Bose QC 35. Overall- Since this is ultimately a device with which to listen to music, the Sony is a better choice seeing as the Noise Cancellation is on par with the Bose but the 'sound' of music is significantly much better.

By far the best wireless headphones I've used.

I have a bit of an obsession with wired headphones of all shapes and sizes. I currently own Bowers & Wilkins P5 and P7, Ultrasone Pro 900, AKG K7xx, and Sennheiser HD650s, along with two custom fit IEMs for stage use. I wouldn't call myself an expect with headphones, but I certainly have a little bit of experience. I've been looking for a Bluetooth capable, noise cancelling headphone for quite sometime now and I haven't been impressed with a lot of what I was seeing. From over-all audio quality to build quality, to price, to functionality, everything that I demoed just didn't check off all of the boxes. That was, at least, until I came across the Sony's. First things first. The noise cancelling (NC) is absolutely astounding. Passive NC is rather good, with the cans providing a decent reduction in ambient noise. The active NC, once engaged is so alarmingly quite that when you remove them, its easy to get disorientated. These have, by far, the best active NC I've used to date. Voices, music, atmospherics, and randoms all get reduced to a very appreciable degree. But it doesn't stop there. There are three other NC modes you can engage. The first is "Ambient voice" which allows you to retain the atmospheric NC while actively passing through vocal frequencies. The effect allows for extremely good atmospheric NC (think like eliminating a noisy air conditioner) but still having the ability to have a conversation if you're in an active environment, say like an office and someone needs to ask you a question. Very cool mode. The second NC mode is "Ambient Full". This provide a full ambient pass through. This is not the same as having the NC turned off, as this actively transmits the information received by the external microphones to your ear cups. The effect is similar to wearing open back head phones. You hear your audio just fine, AND you hear the world around you equally fine. This is GREAT if you're wearing these things on a busy street and still need to be aware of the world around you so you don't end up roadkill. The last NC mode is simply "NC OFF". The cans become a really good pair of "non-NC" headphones at that point, conserving a ton of battery life and preserving a bit more audio quality that is naturally lost when NC is active. A very, VERY, useful feature of these headphones is the ability to calibrate the NC to your particular head. Press and hold the NC button for a few seconds and a series of test tones will play out, the internal microphones (inside the ear cups) will pic up the response and adjust the NC to the new specifications. This is especially useful if you wear glasses, as the seal between the cups and your head may not bee 100%, this system ensures that they take extra measures to filter out unwanted noises. The right ear-cup houses the music controls but does so in a very interesting manner. There is a touch sensor build into the face of the ear-cup. Simply swipe up for volume up, swipe down for volume down, swipe forward for skip forward, and swipe back for skip back. You can also tap to play, pause, or answer/hang up a call. A notable feature here is if you place your palm over the entire surface, the headphones immediately turn off NC, allow ambient full to come through and lowers the volume of your music/phone call. Think if you were on an airplane and an attendant comes to ask you a question, a simple gesture and you're able to have a conversation without having to take them off or fiddle around with volume. Very convenient. Phone quality is way above par. The external microphones pic up your voice almost perfectly, while rejecting a large amount of ambient sound. Phone calls are the perfect time to use the "Ambient Voice" mode of the NC so that you can still hear your voice normally and end up NOT shouting. Don't be that person. The last piece of note on these things is battery life. They claim a 22 hour life with NC on. This is false. They're actually closer to 40 hours.... I know, crazy. A manufacturer actually under-promising what their product actually delivers, but it's true. The battery life is simply amazing. Something other reviewers have pointed out is the ability to connect to an external source via a hard line. This is an incredible feature for those who want to use these as more traditional headphones while at home. The only real issue with doing this is that NC does not work while hard-lined up. However, the fact that Sony gave a full-sized 3.5mm jack on the headphones, as opposed to a 2.5mm which is more common on the headphone end of removable cable systems, means that the cable is easily replaceable if lost and convenient to have multiples at different locations, eg. work, home, etc... All in all, the Sony MDR 1000X noise cancelling headphones, while not being the best sounding headphones I own, are by far the best NC headphones I've ever used and subsequently owned. The handily beat the current NC king (the very good Bose QC35) in every measurable area, and mange to look and feel higher quality as well. The included carrying case is fantastic, and Sony also includes an airplane headphone adapter for those who travel. Sony knocked this one out of the park. If you're in the market for a Bluetooth, noise cancelling, over-ear headphone, and the price doesn't kill your bank account, do not hesitate to buy these things.

I've had these headphones for a bit over a month now and use them daily. They are suberb! When you first get them, you have to break in the audio a bit so it gets set. Otherwise when the audio has broken in, the noise cancellation and the audio are suberb! The ambience noise is also very good, it has one microphone on each earcup to pick up noise when you have it on Ambient mode or when you're holding the right hand on the right ear cup. It is very clear and amplifies voices, and sounds around you when you use the ambient mode. When you go into Noise cancellation and want to be isolated from the world, this is where things start cranking up. The Noise cancellation is superb! There are also the QC 35's that are available, I've tried those but didn't like how weak the plastic design looked so I went with the MDR 1000x's instead. They have a lot of functionality unlike the QC 35's, ambient mode, swipe right, left, up, down to change volume/change song. Overall, I would reccomend these for anyone who is looking to get a premium pair of noise cancellation headphones with a lot of functionality, including the ambient mode!

I looked at several headphones before settling on these due to great reviews. Everything works as designed. Great noise cancelling and pretty good sound. About the only thing I'm seeing after spending an hour with them is they aren't close to being as comfortable as the Bose QC35. I actually ended up with an ache in the base of my neck and I can feel my ears turning warm. I'll keep trying these and then if they don't feel better, swap them out for the Bose. Other than that, these head phones do what the marketing demos say it does. You can fine-tune the level of noise canceling and also the quality. I haven't tried using the enclosed cable to hear what the Hi-Res quality sounds like, but Bluetooth sounds great. It took me about 10 minutes to get the hang of the controls. No way to know if these will ache for you other than to try them out because in the store, I couldn't tell.

Everything about these headphones boasts quality. The sound is excellent and blows every pair of closed headphones out of the water. If you are looking for studio quality sound you'll need open headphones instead. These headphones, however, deliver an experience that is as close to open-back headphones as I've ever heard! And the cherry on top is that you can't hear anything else around you! Quality all around.

When looking for wireless, noise-cancelling headphones, my daughter requested the ever-popular Beats. Soon into researching, I found out those were way overpriced junk. No thanks. So I want quality for this kind of money. Sony hit the mark, above Bose. Not surprisingly, either. This have not disappointed. The sound quality and extra features are amazing. The noise-cancelling is almost too good!
