Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

Sounds Great, but takes a learning curve

Overall the stereo sounds great, with very simple, basic 6 ohm speakers, but I have a DirecTv mini genie, and turning everything on, and still getting a picture on my Sony TV took a learning curve. What no one tells you is that turning on the three items to actually watch TV, has to be done in a certain order. If everything is off, it is DirecTv mini genie first, followed by stereo, then TV, and any variance, and you may get sound, but no picture. My advice is keep trying them in different order, and eventually you will figure it out. One other minor complaint is the Bluetooth. I find myself having to turn the receiver to Bluetooth, and then pair it to my phone quickly, of the Bluetooth on the receiver does not connect right away, but again, it may just be a learning curve. Overall though, I like the receiver, it sounds great with music, and the Movie setting gives you that extra punch for Action Movies, so I am going to continue to play with it, and maybe pick up additional tricks, yes, this old dog can learn them. One final note, I cant wait to play with the self adjust microphone to see if I can improve the sound even more, if that is possible.

Recently upgraded a 25 year old a/v receiver, and the new Sony strdn1080 really makes my whole system sound better and come to life. Very good sound and enough power. Was concerned at first but very satisfied. Owners manual is a little vague on some details so you have to go online with sony.com for more information, is the only complaint I have.

The sound quality that comes out of this system is absolutely amazing. It was pretty much plug-in play with my home theater. All the Sony sinks up and starts working right away. The system recognize my TV 4K HD player and even my video game systems.

Bought to upgrade from Yamaha rx-v1065 that is 8 years old. I have a Samsung KS 8000 hooked up via ARC through the one connect mini box. Sound is amazing through my Polk signature series speakers. I have not tried hooking up components through HDMI ports on receiver so I can not comments on video. Setup is a breeze. Great upgrade for a 4K receiver.

I purchased this replace an aging STR-DE845 receiver that is giving up the ghost. I specifically purchased it for the Zone 2 options so I could use it to drive a set of speakers to extend coverage in the house. The Zone 2 speaker output won't support HDMI and Optical sources so to do this I used a combination of that and the second HDMI output with an HDMI audio extractor. And it all works but with a lot of trial and error because it the menus will display conflicting settings. For example Zone 2 will show a volume level even if it is set to line in another place. Or if you enable the second HDMI Zone output it still allows you to try to enable HDMI A+B.
Honestly for the cost of the receiver it should have the ability to extract HDMI audio and route it to the second zone natively. This seems like an obvious this people will want to do. But the product info shows this clearly allowing you to plan around it.
The unit is happily communicating with my existing Sony Blue-ray player and Sony Bravia TV and I may retire our Harmony remote.

I have always been a pioneer user. After hearing all the problems with the current pioneer system I thought I would give Sony a try... The sound is amazing!! Phantom surround sound back channels actually work pretty well! Video quality that it put out is clear and artifact free..I have Polk monitors 70 and powers them really well..Happy with my purchase..

Got it on sale and I am loving this so far as my home entertainment sound system. Plenty of hdmi inputs and has HDR 4-K.
Also recently read somewhere that this is one of the most popular or best for the money receivers of the year. It sounds great for the money. Not the cheapest and not the most expensive. Just an all around good stereo.

Purchased this as recommended by Ed, who knows more about audio/video than anyone IMO. I wanted to upgrade from my previous Yamaha, and didn't consider Sony until Ed told me about it. The audio with movies and TV is noticeably better than before and the power is better and clearer than the Yamaha. Very good purchase for a reasonable price.

Sound wise this has great power and output. Easy to install and seems perfect. One issue I can’t overlook - when turning on the tv and NOT wanting the receiver on, it still turns automatically. The worst part is that it defaults to a Home screen that you CANT turn off in settings. This means every time the Home menu appears you need to click through a couple items before you can watch tv (with or without the receiver on). Multiple AVR forum users battled the same issue - no way to turn that Home menu off. This adds about 1 minute in every tv start up and in my case, needing to use my Xfinity remote & a universal remote to get through it. In the end, I am returning this Sony and trying a Denon unit.

Hi EvilPettingZoo, We're glad to hear you like the sound quality of your STRDN1080. To prevent the unit from powering on when you turn on your TV, Set [Control for HDMI] to [OFF] in the [HDMI Settings] menu. Please refer to this link for details: https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdn108/v1/en/contents/TP0001221252.html Hope this helps! -Sam

The reviews for the amp have been very positive. I cannot think of any major flaws/negatives and for the sale price it would be hard to beat. The sound is clean, pure and to me seems natural. It was easy to set up using the on screen setup routine. It pairs very well with the Sony Core speaker series.

Only 21 lbs but pwoerful, it has more digital connections than analog (who still use component cables?), it has enough power for nice set of speakers, can decode commonly use audio and Dolby Atmos, 4k compatible. Use the auto calibration mic for precise set up. This Amp + my Definitive speakers= great surround sound for my movie watching.

Very solid receiver for the money.
Great connectivity, no comparability issues as far as I could tell with any of my external devices.
Not finicky at all nor is it overly complicated.
Runs Atmos really well first try.
No problems with SACD playback either, which makes it worth the cost in and of itself.
Great sound quality, pairs well with Sony's core series speakers which are also phenomenon for the price.
Spotify built in is a great addition: CD quality 44.1kHz sound streaming, and you can control it with the app on your phone super easily.
If you're looking for a receiver at <$1000, this is probably you're best bet.
Sony could charge $1000 if they wanted and it would still be worth it.
It's somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500 for the whole 7.1 set of core series speakers so you could have a modern, high resolution, Atmos compatible surround sound system for around $2000! Great deal.

I love this receiver!!! The audio quality is amazing at low and even high volumes. I started with smaller speakers and have since upgraded to tower speakers and the audio is superb either way you go. The only thing I don't care for is the extra step you go through to select a video input device. It will make a humming noise when "powered off" if you have ARC enabled or "CEC" which is what allows the tv to control the receiver instead of swapping remotes back and forth, because of the tv turning on the unit when itself is turned on. The soft hum will stop if you turn off CEC and any other wake-up features offered. I haven't figured out how to program radio stations yet and the online instructions didn't mention that either. Not a big deal. I gave 4 stars because even in a sort of standby mode I feel the transformer should not hum, no matter how quiet the humming is. It does not hum when the unit is powered on though.

Bought this to compliment my LG 4K television. It works pretty much as expected. Decent user interface via tv screen. Don’t buy this if you have a bunch of legacy components as it is really focused on HDMI. I was not successful enabling Dolby Vision from my Apple TV through this unit. I needed to plug the Apple TV directly into the television. The receiver was able to handle the audio out from the television via the HDMI link. So it is really a minor problem. Chrome cast is a nice feature as well as Bluetooth. Overall, pretty pleased.
