Bought these to replace my Beats Wired headphones that I broke. I bought these Sony 1AM2 headphones and actually returned them because I just didn't get the sound out of them that I wanted. I tried many others but came back to these after doing some research about adding a headphone amp, which I did. Now they're what I was looking for in sound quality. They are comfortable and lightweight.

i'd consider myself an audiophile. These, and the DT770 are the best headphones under $500. The Sony's are more bass heavy.

I wanted a great sounding set, they did not disappoint. After reading many reviews, i decided on these. They are amazing, and work great with Hi Res Audio.

    Sony MDR-1AM2 headphones

I purchased the Sony MDR-1AM2 headphones and also a pair of Audio-technica ATH-50x headphones. After a thorough side by side comparison with both pair, I decided to keep the ATH-50x headphones. Both headphones are excellent choices. Both have excellent sound quality and comfort. I purchased the Sony's when they were on sale for $199 and the ATH-50x are normally priced at $149. Pricing was not a factor. To my ears, the Sony's seemed to have a "bloated bass sound" compared to the ATH-50x. You can't go wrong with either, it's about personal preference.

There is nothing Hi-Res Audio at all about these

I owned the previous MDR-1A, and whereas they were truly a revelation compared to even a $600 pair of Sennheiser headphones I had owned previously, the “improved” follow-on model is middle-of-the-road as headphones go at best. They feel much “cheaper”, the the low-end is muffled, and the high end is bright to the point of being shrill. The only reason I got these was because the single-ended cable on my MDR-1A’s went out, Sony service at first said that they would ship a replacement cable, but then a couple of weeks later contacted me to tell me that I’d have to send everything in to them. I went to just buy another pair, as they had been on the market several years and ended up with this “improved” model because little did I know they had recently discontinued the MDR-1A and replaced it with these (at the same price point). I would say definitely NOT an improvement, more like a way to cut production costs drastically and keeping the price the same probably double the profit margin. I would have returned them and moved up to the MDR-Z7, but it too had been replaced by the MDR-Z7M2 that I have read is the same story. I don’t understand Sony — with the Hi-Res Audio initiative they came out guns blazing with products that truly met that moniker, only to within a few years seemingly abandon them (everywhere but he Japanese market). It’s like a repeat a decade later of the incredible push and high quality components and discs for SACD, and today you’re hard pressed to even find a mention that it ever existed on any Sony website. For their part, “audiophiles” have been a big part of the problem in both cases. Even when there was a full thriving line of ES components, just because Sony’s largest sales came from mass-market components and not niche “boutique” products at prices to match, they immediately dismissed any Sony Audio components as cheap garbage. I guess that’s why Soby offers so few Hi-Res Audio components and the ES line of audio components is essentially dead. Bottom line: The MDR-1A’s were a brilliant pair of headphones that sounded like a pair that cost well above twice the price they sold for. A $50 pair of Sony headphones I bought in the early 90’s sounded better than the MDR-1AM2’s.

I returned these headphones because I was not aware of the updated releases that were coming out. While I had this headphone they were excellent and awesome. No issues with this device. Lived up to it's reputation. Hi-res is the way to go for music services like Tidal.

It is "ok" for cell phone (or low power devices). Possibly, this headphone is only 16 Ohm. When the ordered headphone amplifier (Sennheiser) and the headphone (Sennheiser 820) received, I will do the comparison, especially for the balanced connections.
