I work in an office with open seating. I sit near someone who thinks their a drummer, another who is a hummer, and another who likes to tap their feet a lot, loudly. The headphones work great to drown them out. While they aren't noise cancelling headphones, I wasn't looking for them as I'd be jumpy when someone needs to chat w/ me and I don't know they're there.
I got these more for the sound quality and I've had good luck with Sony headphones in the past. They're also lightweight, which is great if you prefer an over/on the ear type headphone instead of ear buds. And they're comfortable.
Imagine Dragons sound great on the headphones, with their heavy bass on several songs. You also hear all the little nuisances when listening to classical. I've yet to try them when watching a movie, though they generate a distinct sound mixture when gaming.
Not exactly budget at $300, Sony does offer their Z7 if you want more power and sensitivity. I don't think it would be worth the extra $400 though for my needs. They are worth the look if you're looking for an even higher quality sound.

It has been a while since I have owned a set of regular headphones that don't supply their own power. I had been using a high end rechargeable bluetooth headset that I have for my Xbox, which did the job really well and was at the same price point as these Sony Headphones. But the old set was several years old, started to have some connection issues, and would start to wear on my ears after extended use.
The minute these Sony Headphones arrived, I decided to give them a trial by fire. I was getting ready to mow my lawn when the delivery arrived, and I don't think I know how to mow without listening to music. I opened the very nice packaging, took out the headphones and was immediately surprised by how light they were. I put them on my head and was impressed by how comfortable they were. I could tell that these were immediately going to pay off for using in the long term. The box also came with two good quality headphone cords, one with phone mic and one without, and a nice carrying bag. Both cords have a straight plug, and a 90* plug on their respective ends.
I plugged the mic cord in to my Galaxy S9, placed the phone in my pocket, and started to mow. First thing I noticed, I really wish both ends of cord were straight. The 90* bend was awkward in my pocket. After getting past that, the sound was CLEAR. Very very Clear. The bass was lacking a little, but I made some adjustments to my phones sound output and it became much more immersive. On top of the clear sound, the headphone cups deadened the drone of the lawnmower and with music playing, if I wasn't holding on to the lawnmower, I wouldn't be able to tell it was right next to me. That is what I want out of my headphones. I want to hear the source they are playing, I want to feel the music, and I don't want to hear the outside interference. These headphones excel at this.
Now these headphones do what they are designed to do well, but they appear to be very dependent on their source. Being passive (non-powered) headphones, that is understandable though. I think that these would really shine being plugged in to an amplified source where they could really see some power coming through them. They were acceptable and pleasant plugged into my phone, but when I plugged them into my PC, they seemed under powered, which disappointed me. They were still clear and spot on when using the Dolby output settings for simulated surround, but REALLY needed more power and volume. I have a decent gaming PC, but it does not have a dedicated audio card, which may have helped. Also, do not try and use these for gaming. Their lack of volume really hurt when trying to pinpoint how close enemies were, or hearing them creeping. I know that this is not what these were made for, but I thought I would try as they are so much more comfortable than my gaming headset.
I have also used these during several phone calls and they did pretty well. I especially enjoyed using them when on hold with a company's customer service department. I didn't have to hold my phone at awkward angles for extended periods of time while trying to tell if the faint hold music was a representative speaking or just hold music. Everything was clear and I was comfortable while waiting. The people on the other end of the phone appeared to have no issues hearing me, even when I had to recite order numbers to them. I may start using these during any of my business calls while attempting to multitask.
Overall, these headphones are audiophile quality, but will definitely benefit when connected to an audiophile quality source. You could wear these headphones for days without fatigue or discomfort. They will do great with any task you throw at them. If you are looking for a high end wired headset, these will do you just fine. These headphones aren't perfect, but they are close.

The 1AM2 are wired, over the air headphones from Sony in a surprisingly lightweight package. To my ears, they provide great sound reproduction and were pretty comfortable to wear over long periods (3-4 hours). Despite the lightweight construction, i felt comfortable that these would hold up to normal use. I wish there was a way to get this quality and weight headphones in a wireless package!
As mentioned, sound reproduction was pretty decent with no compromise on bass. It felt pretty immersive and lends itself to sitting back and losing yourself into music. Other media, like an audiobook sound ok, but the impression was about the same as with other headphones - music is where the 1AM2 really shines. Voice calls went pretty well, with good microphone pickup and voice quality.
My bluetooth workout headset also doubles as my "work" headphones since it has a wired input and really long battery life. If it wasn't for the additional noise cancellation feature, I'd be tempted to replace them with these.

The headphones didn't work with my desktop computer speakers. I was willing to buy new speakers from Best Buy so that I could use the headphones. To cut to the chase, no employee could seem to help me with this problem. I returned the headphones.

Plastic construction really doesn’t make it feel like it should cast as much as it did. Earcups also started getting hot really quick. Sounded great though.

I use these for monitoring while recording. They are good, but not the greatest. They are what you would expect from a mid-range Sony over the ear headphones

The Sony 1AM2 Hi-Res Headphones are an over ear style model, that successfully isolate you from most outside sounds, although they do not include active noise cancelling. They are comfortable fitting even with my large ears and head. They are mostly constructed of plastic, with soft faux leather earcuffs and are lightweight and provide fatigue free listening. As for the sound, the 40mm liquid crystal polymer diaphragm provide a wide frequency range from 3Hz to 100khz, the outliers of that range are really not detectable in humans. Regardless if you consume high resolution audio these are the right set of headphones, they provide clear, crisp sound and the low frequencies do not seem to be overly emphasized or artificially enhanced. The tonal quality seems true to the source material. There are several tracks where I heard details layered within the recording that I never was aware of, quite the experience when you listen to familiar material and discover new detail. Since these are high res headphones listening to high bitrate FLAC files takes full advantage of the capabilities. At a minimum I suggest you crank to the max the streaming or download quality of your favorite music service, including a setting that provide maximum dynamic range. The only thing I was disappointed with was the lack of a hard storage case, they simply provide a fabric pouch, with a sleeve within it. I really am surprised that such a higher end product provides such substandard storage (in this case pouch). I would protect my investment in these, not cheap headphones and store them in a hard case.
Pros:
- Lightweight and comfortable
- High quality, true to source sound reproduction
- Quality sound cables provided, ground wire isolated for each channel
Cons:
- Case does not provide much protection, it is actually a fabric pouch

In the box:
The 1AM2 headphones come with a 3.5mm cable with in-line microphone, 4.4mm balanced “pentaconn” cable, and cloth drawstring pouch.
Design:
Solidly built, but very light, the 1AM2 is comfortable for long listening sessions (even with glasses). As with most over-ear headphones, my ears tend to get warm with extended listening, but 3 hours in I had almost forget I have them on. The plug-in cable design means that cables are easily changed. Pivoting ear-cups and cloth bag make for easy storage and travel. The 3.5mm single-ended cable has TRRS design (Left,Right, ground, microphone) to accommodate an in-line microphone with a single button control. The cable works with Apple and Samsung phones (one-button remote on microphone functions as play/pause with short press and launches voice command app with long press). The button can be used to accept incoming calls and end calls in progress. The 1AM2 comes with a second 4.4mm “pentaconn” balanced cable with a five-connector TRRRS terminal (L+,L-,R+,R-,?). The purpose of the sleeve connection is not specified. Note that the headphone end of each cable is straight while the source end is right-angle.
Specs:
The 1AM2 has an advertised frequency response of 3 Hz to 100 kHz. This is clearly overkill with respect to the range of human hearing, however it does suggest that these earphones can reproduce any audible frequency with ease.
While resistance is not the only factor in dynamic output, at 16 Ohm my iPhone 6+ and Samsung S4 have no trouble driving these headphones to loud listening levels at <50% volume.
Sound Quality:
The 1AM2 has LOTS of bass. Sony has built-in something they call “Beat Response Control”. Its purpose is to improve transients when the bass has a defined rhythm. It works relatively well under those circumstances, but does not work so well when the bass is irregular or sustained. The bass can get overpowering in these cases. Low mids can get a bit muddied by bass with poorly mastered source. Treble is clear and clean without being sibilant during long listening sessions.
The 1AM2 was much easier to drive than my (300 Ohm) Sennheiser HD600s and the closed-back design on the 1AM2 provided more isolation. The sound signature of the 1AM2 is very bass-forward with crystal-clear highs. The HD600s have a solid reference-quality sound throughout the frequency range with a modest tail off below 50 Hz. 1AM2 is rock solid below 100 Hz, but lowers a bit in the mids (200 to 1000 Hz) and recovers between 1 and 14 kHz. For serious listening in a quiet environment, the HD600s are my choice. If you want to escape the noise around you and surround yourself in fun, the 1AM2 is the better choice.
Volume levels are similar between the 1AM2 and my (45 Ohm) Etymotic ER4SR in-ear-monitors (IEMs). The closed-back design of the 1AM2 offers some degree of isolation, but nowhere near the level of the ER4SR. The ER4SR bass response is lower, but cleaner. I have no problems with the triple-flange tips on the ER4SR, but they can get uncomfortable after several hours. The ER4SR is the better choice for isolation and critical reference listening. The 1AM2 is better for bass and long listening sessions.
Overall: The 1AM2 is a great headphone. What it lacks in mids it makes up for in bass and treble. They are comfortable and a pleasure to listen to over long sessions without fatigue or sibilance. The bass is prominent and well-controlled when rhythmic. The 1AM2 is easy to drive with good Isolation. I put them in the audiophile, but not the reference quality category.
Sources Used:
I evaluated the MDR-1AM2 with the iFi iDAC, FiiO X5ii, Dell XPS15 (9550), Apple iPhone 6+, and Samsung S4 Active. I have no balanced source to test with the 4.4mm cable.
The following albums were sampled during my review:

These headphones offer quality, crystal clear sound, but I’m not sure they are worth the price. I have multiple pairs of high end wired and wireless headphones, and after trying the new Sony 1AM2, I was left wondering what this pair offered at this price point that others don’t already do, and some even much better and the same or even lower price.
The cans are very lightweight, almost shockingly so right out of the box. But the build quality is very good. And even though they are mostly plastic, you don’t even notice that they are on your head after long listening sessions. The ear cups are super soft and comfortable and form a nice over-the-ear seal on your head.
Sound quality is very good, especially when using hi res audio sources. The clarity is nice and pronounced, however I was left feeling the set lacks overall bass. But then again I listen to pretty bass heavy rock and metal music. Even with the audio source eq’d to be bass heavy, the 1AM2’s produce very nice and clean tight bass, but may leave some listeners wanting more.
The talkback cable worked perfectly and accepting and closing phone calls from a smartphone is super easy. They also come with a 1/4 in cable for when your audio source is something other than a smartphone, so no need for any adapters down to 1/8 in which is nice. They also come with a nice carrying bag.
Overall they are a solid pair of hi res audio headphones, but at their price point, not sure they make the grade.

This headphone was ok, but heard a distortion "noise " in the treble register on a treasured CD that had been listened to before from speakers. ( without the distortion) This may have been a faulty set but added more money and upgraded to another Sony brand headset .
