    great sound bar

I have been trying to figure out for over a year now on what i would like to have as my surround sound for my TV. I wanted to do the best way, receiver, then good speakers with an electrician coming in to do the wiring. The problem came down essential to cost. I started looking around for good soundbars that would work as well as a good surround sound stereo and yes it probably isn't close to a true surround sound system but it feels close. I love all of its features. The 6.7 inch Sub woofer gives a solid crisp sound that shakes my house and the soundbar is just as crisp. I watched on of my loud 4K movies being played from my Xbox One S on my Samsung 65 inch 4K TV and it was an awesome experience. My only knock on it is that if you set it up with your TV you cant listen to music on the Bluetooth setting and be able to watch/play video and listen at the same time. but otherwise its an awesome sounding sound bar and has worked better then i expected for the price i paid. I would defiantly recommend this product. I hope that i can write a good review in a year saying that it lasted a still sounds great.

I bought this soundbar as a replacement for an old 5.1 surround system, and it sounds just as good, but with fewer speakers and wires running all around the room. If I want to go back to a true surround system, I can buy the wireless surround speakers later ($200 each?! Really, Sony?) Out of the box, the subwoofer doesn't sound very powerful. Here's what I did to remedy that: 1. Turn the sub to its max setting (12). 2. In the Settings menu, you can adjust the sub output +/- 6 db. I set it to +3 db. 3. Use the Movies sound field. I think it has the fullest sound even when you're not watching movies.

True Cinema Quality with surround speakers

    Posted .

In all honesty, I was disappointed with my Sony HT-XT2 soundbar, not because of the sound quality - the built-in subwoofer produces amazing, punchy base - but because of the lack of an open sound-stage. So in my quest for that cinematic sound for my 13' x 11' bedroom, I purchased a pair of ZR-5 bluetooth speakers to use with the XT2 as surrounds. Even though the sound was vastly improved, there was still a lack of left-right width to the sound. That was when I decided to look at other options. A trip to Best Buy led me to examine two models: the Sony HTNT5, and the HTCT800. The CT800 was not connected to surround speakers but still produced an open sound stage with the in-store Pacific Rim demo. The NT5 was hooked up to a pair of Z-R5 bluetooth surrounds and sounded outstanding! The NT5, however was outside of my budget at $799, so I took home the HT-CT800. There is still a part of me that wished I had gotten the NT5 because of the greater number of drivers built into the unit which is sure to produce a more audiophile sound quality. The HT-CT800 however is no slouch. Its subwoofer is nothing short of powerful. The open soundstage even without my ZR5's connected still produces a very immersive soundstage - although I do find that the SoundForce virtual surround is no substitute for a pair of rear surrounds. Without my ZR5's there is a bubble of sound that does not seem to extend behind my viewing area the way other two-speaker SRS (sound retrieval systems) and virtual surround systems do. Used in conjunction with the ZR5's however, this soundbar transforms my room into a convincing movie theatre. Movies on Itunes and Blu-ray and shows on HBO transport you, and immerse you in the onscreen environment with crisp ambient sounds, and vocals - whether they are in front or behind. Battle scenes surround you in explosions, the swish of bullets, crakling fire, and shouts. Urban environments produce cars honking, distant sirens, overhead helicopters, distant music and everything you would expect to hear around you. I did learn that not all was smooth out of the box, however. The Soundbar itself works great, but there are times when there is no sound being poduced until you turn off the wireless surround, and then turn it back on again. The Songpal Music Center app needs to be seriously updated as your speaker combo setups will sometimes disappear from your mobile device - forcing you to repeat the setup process if you want to use just your surrounds to listen to music, for instance. The output of the surrounds was initially disappointing until I set the level to twice the decibel count of the soundbar and the subwoofer. Which leads to the very functional interface of the soundbar itself. The remote-accessible input-switching, and individual sound level adjustments for the soundbar, the subwoofer, and the wireless surrounds make this soundbar behave like a high-end surround receiver. There is even automatic input switching depending on which device is turned on first. Overall, I am thoroughly pleased with this soundbar, and despite a couple of annoyances related to wireless surround and the Songpal app, I readily give the Sony HT-CT800 five stars.

Very nice sound bar for the money!

I really like this sound bar. Great sound quality for the price point. However I have deducted one star for some features I think its missing. I have it hooked up to a 75 inch Sony X900E. However I still have to use the remote that came with soundbar to adjust the volume. I wished that it would integrate with the TV remote control and I haven't been able to achieve that. However if there is something I am missing about how to do that then it I would give it a 5 stars. But with minor annoyance of that I can only give it 4 stars. Not a deal breaker though because I just order another one that's currently being shipped to me from Best Buy at the time of this review to hook up to my 55 inch Sony X900E in my master bedroom. So the overall quality and sound it provides is good or I wouldn't have purchased a second one. So I would recommend it to someone however I feel that you should be able to integrate the volume of the soundbar system to your main remote control especially when your rocking all the same brand on everything or even a smart universal remote. I have owned the the one in my living room for a year now.

Great Soundbar when used with SRSZR5

    Posted .

This is my first sound bar but I've been looking into getting one for quite a while. Previously I used a 5.1 receiver the HT-IS100 from Sony which had tiny golf ball sized speakers and a big sub that also output a majority the mids from the. The sound was OK an the speakers were easy to hide but ultimately the sound was very thin when watch movies and voices often got lost. I resorted to lowering the front L/R speakers to as quiet as possible and making the center as loud as possible which made it better but the sound was very thin. This sound bar has VERY full sound and most importantly it has 4 HDMI ports (1 being ARC) that pass through 4K and HDR. The only thing missing is Dolby Atmos but I live in a smallish apartment so not a huge deal. The sound is fantastic when paired with the SRSZR5; which are a pricey $199 each. I tried without the wireless rear speaker add-ons and didn't love the sound. But considering most other soundbars at the 800-900 price range only have one HDMI in and out this is a best bang for your buck for a full surround sound with all the newest decoders. The vocals are still a little weak for my taste but they have a vocal booster that goes from 0 to 1 to 2. 2 seems like the best for me, as the SFX and mixed audio is very loud and powerful in the fronts. Probably why some people prefer having a center channel but IMO the center channel isn't always needed. I auditioned John Wick in TrueHD, Jurassic Park and 4K disc of Deadpool. All sounded great! The only knock I have against this system is that you lose other sound fields if you add on the wireless rears. So no Sports or Game modes. Your choices are either Movie or Music after you add the rears and I honestly don't hear any difference between the two. DTS Neo 6 virtualization is really nice too!

    Need Rear Speakers

I purchased this to replace an inexpensive 'wired' 5.1 Sony surround sound system. This might have been a little naive on my part. The soundbar is clear and has plenty of volume, but the idea that it can produce a cinematic surround sound experience alone is deceiving. I purchased (2) Sony bookshelf speakers today in an effort to remedy the situation. Fingers crossed it works.

That is what several of my family members said. We upgraded from at Vizio 2.1 sound bar and there is no comparison in quality. Be sure to get the wireless rear channel speakers. As soon as I got it unboxed and installed I found every battle scene in all my favorite movies and played them. WOW!

Great sound bar for a medium to smaller room

I love this sound bar. Really fills my apartments living room area. I recently had the htct790, and what a difference with the htct800. The biggest difference is how smoothly and quickly the 800 turns on with my samsung tv and apple tv via ARC. I had major issues with 790 turning on and no sound, or 2-3 minute delays until the sound would work. The 800 seems to have much better internals, because there is ZERO delay with ARC. The software seems to be better than the 790 as well, because you can set your speaker distances and levels. My only CON with this sound bar, is there seems to be a minor sound loss where the center channel should be, as in, muffled vocals, but not all vocals. Again, it just seems to be light on the center channel. If Sony could drop an update, to give a "virtual center" channel (in movie mode), this sound bar would be 5 Stars all day! Please Note, you do have the ability to change the volume of each channel, but it still is just missing that center high or vocal in movie mode... if you put it on Clear Sound, it is there, but then you lose the better surround. Great sound bar for the $$$, I love mine, and just ordered the rear surround speakers!!!!

I bought this yesterday & so far so good. I have a 55” inch Bravia TV but I noticed when my moms over & watching TV : she’s turning up the volume to 33-35!! I’m like lady are u insane !! Don’t blow up the tv ! She told me she could hardly hear. I did my research - it was between this & JBL; I’m happy I went with this since it is a Sony TV & the JBL is 100 bucks more. If you’ve got the moolah then buy Definitive Technology.. if u want a good sound bar with an AMAZING subwoofer .. buy this. !

Good soundbar, cheap sub setup. Limited settings.

The soundbar sounds good. It is a little bright but still 9/10 SQ. The subwoofer is lightweight, but actually sounds decent. The problem I have is that there is no tuning/crossover options for subwoofer, it cuts on randomly as it detects bass. Eg. If I'm watching the news and a deep voice begins speaking, the sub 'jumps' in, it's not a smooth transition and my SW volume is on 1. I put the sub all the way across the living room and I still hear it cut in and out. I've gone back to my standalone sub...no other use for this one as connection is Sony wireless, no buttons on the sub at all.

I purchased this soundbar with the Sony 900E tv since they had a promo for $200 off. For what I paid, it is a great quality soundbar. It is loud, it synced to the tv very easy, and it is controlled with the same remote from the sony tv. My only complaint would be that the voices are a bit soft. My wife has me turn up the sound when people are talking and then turn it way down when there is gunfire/yelling/loud music. it gets annoying. I wouldn't pay the full price for this soundbar. I thought the $300 I paid for it when it was on sale is a good price. But all in all, this is still a good quality soundbar.

Replaced old Sony Wega HD tv with built in surround with new Sony XBR55X900E tv. Knew I needed sound bar to have decent sound. Specs on bar alluded that dialogue would be okay. Not true, dialogue was drowned out with minimal adjustment capability. Took it back to store and the only Sony sound system that would meet my needs was $1499. Nothing in between! Disappointing. Ordered Nakamichi for half the price

I bought this a year ago and loved it for the amazing sound quality it had for this price point. The sound system had great range and a well balanced base. However, about a year in, the subwoofer died. I’ve done everything under the sun to try and revive it, read the manual to trouble shoot, and contacted Sony for help - to no avail. Apparently, there is a whole community of people that own this exact unit that is having this exact problem of the subwoofer spontaneously dying. Just google “subwoofer dead Sony HTC soundbar” and you’ll find pages and pages of people trying to fix their dead subwoofer. It’s also important to note that you can not buy a separate subwoofer to replace just the unit. You HAVE to buy the exact same one because the software connects the subwoofer to the sound bar. Bummer. I’m not saying this will happen to everyone that does own one. But it certainly has happened to a significant subset of us. Buy it with caution and at your own risk.
