However, I suspect this may be due to the age of my wires, so otherwise this receiver has been a good purchase.

Thank you for sharing this information with us, as you have mentioned we do recommend checking the speaker wires to make sure they are connected properly and that the cord is not damaged since it could be causing the unit to enter the Protect mode to avoid any short circuit cause by the speakers. Bought it with two T50 speakers from Polk audio and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It lacks a vent inside the case to take care of the hot air but so far I didn't have any issues with overheating or nothing like that.

My husband wanted a sound system that worked both inside and out and with this receiver, he was able to wire both our indoor speakers as well as our outdoor speakers so we can listen to music anywhere and anytime we want!
