Good Luck with Open Box Items - Buyer Beware!

I purchase an Inzone M9 in open box - excellent condition and couldn't believe the deal I scored. Unfortunately, it turned out too good to be true. Monitor arrived in original box, but far from the Open Box Excellent standards listed on the Best Buy website. No instructions, no screws for monitor stand, no HDMI cable, it looked like they shipped me a broken defective/returned monitor. I was willing to overlook all of this until I finally tested the monitor. To add further insult, the monitor was completely destroyed by UPS. I had to return the monitor the next day to the nearest best buy and got a refund. But the whole experience was such a big letdown. I was really stoked about the deal I got for a high quality item only to be hilariously and unbelievably disappointed. What a bummer...

LCD Panel started glitching just weeks after warranty expired. Sony support for US is based in El Salvador and refuse to even tell me where I can pay to fix it. New version of this suddenly has 3 year warranty. Don’t buy Sony. Especially something this expensive. Frankly won’t shop at Best Buy anymore either after this experience.

I was very excited when Sony announced its new line of INZONE gaming headsets and monitors. I game exclusively on PS5 and PC, and I've been using the same 27" 1440p gaming monitor for both systems. Of course, PS5 didn't support 1440p natively until recently, and there were very few gaming monitors with HDMI 2.1 that would work seamlessly with PS5. Enter the INZONE M9 monitor. For gamers like me who switch between PS5 and PC, it checks all the boxes: 4K resolution, 144 Hz refresh rate, HDR compatible, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. After a week of using this monitor exclusively, I'm very impressed - but there are a few big drawbacks to be aware of. === SETUP AND DESIGN === - Sony does not include any video cables with the M9 -- no HDMI cables or DisplayPort cables are anywhere to be found in the box. For such a premium monitor, this seems like a pretty big omission. - The power brick for this monitor is laughably large. Be sure you have space on or under your desk for the power brick. I'm surprised Sony couldn't find a way to integrate all of the power supply components into the monitor and eliminate the need for a power brick. - The stand looks nice and is relatively easy to install, but that's about it. It's hardly functional and only allows for minimal height and tilt adjustment. I decided to not use the stand and instead mount it to my Dell dual monitor stand (model MDS19). Luckily the M9 has a standard 100x100mm VESA interface, so you can mount the monitor to a stand of your choosing. - Since I also have Sony's INZONE H9 headset, I already had Sony's INZONE Hub software installed on my PC. The M9 immediately appeared in the INZONE Hub as soon as I powered it on. It is incredibly easy and convenient to adjust the monitor's settings via this app -- no need to use the OSD menu and joystick on the back of the monitor (although that also works quite well). - Like the rest of the INZONE lineup, the M9's color is almost an exact match of the white PS5 color. There is a single LED light strip along the top portion of the back of the monitor that can be customized through the INZONE Hub software. === FEATURES & DISPLAY QUALITY === - One of my biggest gripes with the M9 is how long it takes for "handshakes" to occur when switching inputs or initially powering on a device. This is especially apparent with my PC connected via DisplayPort. It can sometimes take up to 20 or more seconds for the monitor to finally display the signal from my PC. It's not as long for HDMI connections, but it definitely gets frustrating. - Full array local dimming is the big feature here -- there are supposedly 96 dimming zones, which is pretty good, but there are a handful of premium gaming monitors out there with more. It works pretty well, but there is noticeable blooming when there are bright objects against an otherwise dark/black background. Run one of those "local dimming tests" on YouTube with the moving white ball, and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's not horrible - I've certainly seen WAY worse on cheaper monitors and even some high-end LCD TVs. And luckily I haven't noticed too much blooming during regular gameplay or PC use. - For the most part, the monitor very bright and colorful, but it gets just a bit dimmer around the edges. On my particular monitor, it's particularly noticeable on PC when looking at the Windows taskbar. The bottom left and right corners of the taskbar look just a bit dim and less colorful compared to the rest of the monitor. Similarly, I've noticed some uniformity issues while staring at Microsoft Word and Excel documents the past few days. If you stare hard enough and long enough at a pure white background, you can see VERY faint vertical gray bars that stretch the length of the monitor. Again, it's not a deal-breaker and is not noticeable in most situations. - The 4K resolution is excellent, and everything appears incredibly sharp and smooth. The one exception is some elements of the Windows operating system. Windows just doesn't do a great job at scaling 4K down to a more readable density, so some menus and apps appear a bit pixelated. Along the same lines, I noticed a sizeable drop in PC gaming performance stepping up to 4K from 1440p (I run a 3080 Ti). My preference for the M9 would have been 1440p at this 27" size, but I suppose it's nice to future proof. - All of those gripes aside, the M9 looks great. It supports variable refresh rates, FreeSync, G-SYNC, and also has a built-in USB hub. I've noticed zero ghosting, tearing, or blur and it is simply a joy to game on. When you switch to PS5, the M9 automatically enables "Auto HDR Tonemapping," which lets the console take full advantage of the monitor's HDR capabilities. Unfortunately, this isn't available on PC. === OVERALL === The Sony INZONE M9 is an excellent gaming monitor that is chock-full of features. It makes me wonder why more modern gaming monitors haven't implemented full-array local dimming or customizable settings via a PC app. It is a beautiful and futuristic-looking monitor, but the included stand simply is not functional if you need more than a tiny bit of height and tilt adjustment. It can sometimes take way too long for the monitor to recognize video signals and there are some display uniformity issues, but these are not deal-breakers. If you game on PS5 and PC and want one monitor that provides the best for both platforms, the M9 should be at the top of your shopping list.

      Hi ryanmcv,

Thanks for sharing your in-depth review and experience with the INZONE M9. We're glad that you like the 4K function, support for 144Hz, HDMI 2.1 ports, and HDR feature of the gaming monitor. We also appreciate your review about the stand design, power brick size, having supplied cables, and display quality of the gaming monitor.

When switching content formats or HDMI ports for HDCP hand shake will cause the screen to quickly do this because the monitor is adjusting for the higher bandwidth signal. Mostly this is seen when going from an SDR signal to HDR signal. This is normal. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the monitor is up-to-date. Please refer to this link:

PROS: + 4K & 144Hz with G-Sync and VRR via HDMI 2.1 + Display offers plenty of brightness for contrasty HDR + Display colors look accurate and punchy + Very minimal blooming with FALD backlight and 96 dimming zones + Great viewing angles with IPS display + Monitor lets you very quickly adjust volume and brightness (among many other picture/system adjustments) using the control stick on the back of the monitor + Inzone software offers full control over the monitor properties + Design looks great in my opinion, very akin with to the PS5 design language + Solidly built with sufficient weight and build quality CONS: - IPS display means lighter black levels & lower contrast compared with VA or OLED - Monitor display cannot rotate independent of the stand - I/O is vertical on the back of the monitor, which combined with the lack of rotation, makes adding/removing cables difficult - Cable management option not great SO-SO: * Not the cleanest display, with some vignetting at corners & vertical banding, although not often that noticeable in real-world content/gaming * 27” display is a good size, but for 4K, 32” or larger would have been preferred * Brightness in SDR is so-so THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT: The Sony Inzone M9 display is Sony’s first modern foray into the high-end PC gaming monitor space, and for the most part I really like it a lot! It really hits where it counts most: picture quality. It has an IPS display, which means accurate color and viewing angles at the the expense of native contrast levels. While the black levels are lighter than you will get with other panel types like VA or OLED, the fall-array local dimming helps recover a lot of that contrast by offering 96 zones which can dim independently of one another. Using the black “shut-down” screen when powering off my computer, I could move the mouse around the screen and see the individual zones light up in a 12 column by 8 row pattern, making up the 96 zone total. This instance is actually the only time I was able to see the backlight zones light-up, because during normal gaming and media watching, the dimming zones (when set to the default of “High”) are very responsive, and can’t be seen changing. Likewise, because IPS has inherently lighter black levels, the positive offshoot is that blooming (light haloing around bright objects), isn’t really noticeable unless on a completely black background. I played Batman Arkham Asylum (a generally dark game) using Auto HDR with Windows 11, and I didn’t experience any “IPS glow” or blooming during the game. In addition to the great local dimming, the monitor is also very accurate from a color perspective and has plenty of brightness (DisplayHDR 600) to make HDR highlights pop. I played several native HDR titles, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, & Hitman 3, all of which looked noticeably better than in SDR on the monitor, with punchier colors, contrast, and brighter highlights. The brightness in SDR is not bad, but when gaming during the day, isn’t anything to write home about. I typically played with brightness at 100% in SDR during the day without it feeling too bright, so there wasn’t much left by way of headroom, but brightness was often sufficient for my needs. All-in-all, picture quality when gaming and watching content was excellent, and really shines (pardon the pun) with bright and colorful games in HDR. A final note on the panel, I did some testing to see how uniformity looked, and it was pretty so-so overall. There was some noticeable color uniformity issues on my panel, specifically with reds in the upper left and lower right corners, where red would look a bit more pink than red. Likewise, when looking at a mostly white screen, you can see some dark vertical banding, which looked a bit like dirty screen effect. Here is the thing with these panel quality issues though, in everyday content, you are very likely to never notice these things. I only noticed them by looking at solid color screens for testing, and during content, even when looking, I never saw these issues surface. Theoretically you could see them in some games depending on the type, but even so, I don’t think they are apparent enough to warrant any concern. I had no issues with dead pixels, or anything that would be more concerning from a panel quality perspective. From a build quality and aesthetics perspective, the monitor is largely great as well. If you own or have used a PS5, this is going to feel very familiar to you. Not only are the design aesthetics inspired by the PS5, but the hard plastic material of the monitor feels largely identical, meaning there is a real density and heft to the monitor. The stand consists of three feet, two on the left and right, and one down center which looks just like the front of the PS5. On the back of this center foot is a small channel to route cables through. It is nice to have some cable management options, but the channel is pretty small, and once I put a DisplayPort, HDMI, and power cable through it, there really was minimal room left for anything else. Likewise, the cables are hung on the back of the monitor with a flimsy plastic clip that kept falling off, so I opted to just let them run out the back. All of this wouldn’t be too bad, except for how the I/O is placed. All of the ports run vertical on the back of the monitor, and since the stand has no rotation, means that the only way to access them is to physically rotate the entire monitor (stand included) or tilt it upwards. Given how bulky the monitor is, neither of these options is convenient, and while should be a minimal problem assuming you don’t change the I/O much, when you do it is much less than convenient and genuinely annoying to deal with. Finally, I wanted to touch on gaming quality of life. With a 4K 144Hz G-Sync/VRR panel, and a 1ms GtG response time, the M9 comes with all of the amenities of a high-end modern display. You get modern I/O, and when it all comes together during gaming, it works amazing. I played many of my favorite PC games to test the monitor, and it worked flawlessly with all of them. Gameplay is smooth, tear-free, and the response time is great with ultra-low latency. If you have a PS5, you get additional built-in features like Auto HDR Tone-Mapping to optimize the console HDR for your display. I do have a PS5, but given I game in my home theater, I didn’t test it with the monitor. That being said, with HDMI 2.1, VRR, and the HDR performance on PC, I can’t see the PS5 experience being anything less than great. Additionally, when on PC, you do get a full 144hz refresh rate, which when combined with 4K, makes classic games on PC looking and feeling better than ever. All-in-all, this is a largely great monitor. It has it where it counts, and really operates as an awesome high-end monitor. The I/O layout is a definite miss, and the panel quality could be better, but these are still smaller inconveniences in an otherwise great product.

----- SUMMARY ----- Verdict: Sony’s INZONE M9 is a strong competitor in the crowded gaming monitor market. It has a unique style that compliments the PlayStation 5, but the minimal branding helps it fit well into any gaming setup. With its stunning 4K HDR picture quality and smooth performance, you’ll love the gaming experience on the INZONE M9. Pros: - Sleek, eye-catching design - Phenomenal 4K picture quality - Smooth performance (144Hz refresh rate) - Full array local dimming - Good selection of ports - Auto HDR Tone Mapping (with PS5 only) Cons: - Integrated speakers have poor sound quality - Stand does not swivel - Input scanning is slow ----- DETAILS ----- Unboxing & Setup: The Sony INZONE M9 is well-packaged and arrived undamaged. Inside the box, you’ll receive the monitor, power adapter, power cord, and owner’s documents (quick setup guide, operating instructions, warranty card, product registration sheet, and INZONE stickers). Sony doesn’t include HDMI or DisplayPort cables, so you’ll have to supply your own. The only assembly required is attaching the stand or mounting it. In either case, a screwdriver will be needed. From there, it’s just plug-and-play. Design: The INZONE M9 is a sleek 27” gaming monitor with a black-and-white color scheme that looks a lot like the PlayStation 5. I don’t own one, but I’m still a big fan of the design, and it looks great next to my white PC. It’s a simple and aesthetically pleasing design, and I appreciate some of the small design aspects like thin bezels, minimal branding, and an RGB strip on the back. Though I chose to mount the INZONE M9 (which follows VESA mounting standards), the stand is one of the better ones I’ve seen. Its unique, tripod design does a good job stabilizing the monitor and provides both height and tilt adjustment. I wish it offered panel rotation and side-to-side swiveling though. The port selection on the back includes two HDMI 2.1 ports, one USB Type-C (with DisplayPort), one USB Type-B, three USB Type-A ports, one standard DisplayPort, and one headphone jack. There’s plenty to connect multiple devices, and the monitor will switch inputs automatically when a video signal is detected. However, the input scanning process is slower than other monitors I’ve used. Since there’s a KVM switch inside the monitor, peripherals can easily be swapped when the input is changed. It’s convenient and has worked well in my tests. Features: The main features of the INZONE M9 are its 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, G-Sync compatibility, and variable refresh rate (VRR). But perhaps the signature feature that sets the INZONE M9 apart from many other gaming monitors is its full array local dimming. In short, it helps deliver a more realistic experience. There are 96 lighting zones that provide localized contrast, a technology more commonly found in 4K TVs. There are other gaming monitors on the market with more than 96 lighting zones, but for a far higher price. I think the INZONE M9 with its 96 lighting zones is a good value. Another neat feature that the INZONE M9 offers is Auto HDR Tone Mapping which automatically sets the optimal HDR settings for games, but this feature is currently only compatible with the PlayStation 5. Though I appreciate that the INZONE M9 has integrated speakers, don’t expect much out of them. They can get pretty loud, but I’d describe the sound as hollow. You’ll want to use headphones or a better speaker setup to get the most out of your gaming experience. Software: On the back of the monitor, there’s an on-screen display control stick that allows you to access and navigate through picture adjustments like contrast, saturation, and brightness, as well as game-assist tools like a frame rate counter and crosshairs. The menu is simple and easy to navigate, but you also have the option of downloading INZONE Hub (a desktop application) and using that to adjust all the settings. Though I have no complaints about the on-screen display settings, the desktop application is convenient to use and nice to have. Performance: The picture quality on the INZONE M9 is phenomenal. The 4K clarity, high brightness and contrast, and color accuracy are a sight to see. Combine that with basically no input lag and you have a smooth and stunning gaming experience. No matter what game I played, the excellent visuals were accompanied by fluid gameplay, even with settings and frame rate maxed out. ----- WHAT’S IN THE BOX ----- 1 x Gaming Monitor 1 x AC Power Adapter 1 x AC Power Cord 1 x Setup Guide 1 x Operating Instructions 1 x Color Calibration Factory Report 1 x Warranty Card 1 x Product Registration Sheet 2 x INZONE Stickers

Hi Kelby, thank you for choosing and purchasing our newest gaming monitor. We appreciate your in-depth review of our product. We understand your feedback on the stand, input lag/latency, and sound quality of your SONY unit. We recommend utilizing the INZONE HUB of your monitor. INZONE Hub is computer software that controls INZONE monitors and headsets. It allows you to personalize experiences by customizing a wide range of operations, including a variety of sound and picture settings. You can also assign specific picture mode and sound profiles of the headset to individual computer applications and games. The input lag time is 4.6 ms, which was measured via 4K/120fps game input based on the internal conditions. The actual lag time may differ in models, real-time usage environments, or specific conditions.

The first monitor I bought had a couple of neon blue spots on the screen, indicating panel damage. As if I was not disappointed enough, I bought a second monitor and waited 3 days to get it because it was not in stock at any of the best buy’s around. I get the second monitor, hook it up and boom, no image. You could see the backlight of the monitor, but no image. Not even the monitors settings menu is visible so I know for a fact it is not my HDMI cables. 2 out of 2 came in bad. I would try a third time, but since I have to wait for delivery, I’ll just return the monitor once again and go back to my s3220dgf.

      Hi JunyeL,

We regret to hear that you had a display issue with the first monitor that you received and nothing is displayed on the screen on the second monitor that you purchased. Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. We hope that the cable you are using is of a latest version.

Make sure that all connections are secured. Sometimes cables are the easiest cause for concern and fix most issues like a black screen. Please also note that 144Hz is supported via Display port and USB-C (DP Alt Mode). To update the software version of the monitor, please make sure to follow the steps on this link: https://helpguide.sony.net/tv/u27m90/v1/en/contents/TP1000670514.html

Please note we have a customer hotline that is happy to assist you and help troubleshoot any concerns you have, and your monitor has a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase.

____ *Pros: -Sleek and artful industrial design that looks cool and modern. -Lots of various ports on the back (DP, HDMI, USB-A, USB-C). -Thin bezels. -Easy and quick assembly – just two screws to tighten. -Solid build materials and excellent fit-and-finish. -The DisplayHDR 600 certified display is bright and evenly lit. -96-zone full array local dimming offers great contrast and delivers noticeably improved image quality over QHD and 4K SDR displays in movies and games. -Variable refresh rate (Nvidia G-Sync, FreeSync Premium, VRR) leads to fluid and tear-free motion control in games. -Excellent 178-degree viewing angle. -The directional joystick on the back for OSD control is snappy and responsive. _____ *Neutral: -Narrow range of height adjustability. -Only Display Port supports 144Hz; HDMI is currently limited to 120Hz. -So-so quality speakers. _____ *Cons: -The time the monitor spends scanning for input signals at start-up takes too long. === My take === The Sony Inzone M9 gaming monitor has impressed me with its cool white and black design, excellent fit-and-finish, crisp and very bright display, and smooth framerates in the games that I enjoy, with Far Cry 6, Elden Ring, and God of War taking up most of my gaming time these days. The extra coin you’re spending for DisplayHDR 600 certification and 96-zone full array local dimming (FALD) seems like and is a lot of money, but the huge improvements in image quality due to greater contrast ratios, deeper blacks and highlights, and vibrantly saturated colors make the investment feel satisfactory and worth my hard-earned moolah. My best monitor before the Inzone M9 was the Samsung Odyssey G5 27” IPS display with a QHD resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, and ~͐350 nits brightness level. Although the Odyssey G5 is good for gaming, the Inzone M9, which is twice as expensive, is more than twice as nice. The Inzone M9 offers true HDR, has better blacks and more vibrant colors thanks to the FALD technology, is brighter (600 nits), and the motion control in games is just as fluid and tear-free despite having a slightly lower refresh rate. I’m not a pro gamer so I couldn’t really feel or tell the difference between the Odyssey’s 165Hz refresh rate versus the Inzone M9’s 144Hz. The factory calibration out of the box is decent but a little bit oversaturated (kind of like Samsung’s older Galaxy S phones with early-technology OLED screens). However, it didn’t come off as being overpowering or over-the-top, which might have stirred me to perform a manual calibration tune-up via third-party software. I’m quite happy and satisfied with the Inzone M9’s presentation since my primary usage of the M9 is for gaming and media consumption and not content creation or editing, which require more accurate color-sensitivity. The Inzone M9 is connected to my primary gaming desktop system which is the 2022 MSI Aegis ZS, an all-AMD system with a Ryzen R7 5800X CPU and RX 6700XT GPU. Games such as Far Cry 6, Elden Ring, and God of War look vibrant and beautiful on the Inzone M9 with fluid framerates with no jarring visual tear-ups. The wide viewing angle is great resulting in consistent image quality. And thanks to FALD, IPS glow and backlight bleeding are immensely minimized over edge-lit IPS monitors, which is especially great for dark rooms and dark scenes in games and movies. Not all aspects of the Inzone M9 were good, however. Three things stand out the most, and they’re the subpar speakers, the narrow range of monitor height adjustability, and the long display input scanning time at first boot-up. I’m not too bothered by the first two as my system is connected to a soundbar system, and monitor height can be further tweaked via a display stand. The slow input scanning time, however, does continue to annoy me and I’m hoping Sony will release a firmware update to address that, as well as unlocking 144Hz refresh rate when connected via HDMI. If you haven’t yet experienced high-refresh rate 4K gaming with true HDR, then the Sony Inzone M9 offers a relatively affordable way to do so. At $900, it certainly isn’t cheap, but the Inzone M9 delivers many useful and game-enhancing features that are more commonly found in >$1,500 monitors of today. The constant march of technology is a beautiful thing with once high-end features trickling down lower and lower into more affordable price brackets. To sum it up, I love my Inzone M9 and I can comfortably recommend it to friends and family who wants a quality gaming and multimedia display. 4.5 stars.

I’m going to return this monitor back. Once I opened the package and installed my monitor to my gaming setup I saw the LCD from the screen all broken. I was really looking forward to and upgrade but this was a disappointment.
