Great sound bar for medium to small rooms

This Sony sound bar is great if you have small or medium size room. It will produce clear almost theater like sound and does a great job at separating dialogue from background noise. I am coming from a Yamaha home theater in a box, and the sound difference between the two systems is drastically different. If you want Dolby Atmos sound for your small to medium size room, this is the way to go. The overall size of the sound bar is comparable to others in its class, and it is effortless to install. Dispite what you might be told in the store, this sound bar does not have rear speaker capabilities due to the fact it is a self contained 7.1.2 sound bar. I would highly recommend this sound bar for those looking to have great sound in smaller spaces.

Surprisingly Decent Sound

This combination soundbar and subwoofer from Sony exhibits pretty decent sound for a somewhat small footprint. The subwoofer in particular is impressive. Just don't get carried away with cranking up the level setting because it can get somewhat muddy. Keep the level at a reasonable level, and enjoy tight, responsive bass. Better than some stand alone units I've experienced. The soundbar itself handles the rest of the audio fairly well. Voice is clear, a little lacking in mid-range, and clear upper range. Have heard sounds in movies previously viewed that I hadn't heard before. Very good system, overall. Sure beats listening to the TV speakers! And, best of all, very easy to set up! Even got the wireless subwoofer to connect first attempt. Spatial distribution is ok. Just don't expect mind-shattering 5.1 or 7.1. No two listening areas are the same, so just follow the setup instructions, tailor to your tastes, and sit back and enjoy!

The soundbar sound quality is really amazing and the subwoofer is really strong for example I was watching war of the planets of the apes and the first scene when the soldiers and the apes are exchanging fire the subwoofer really made the scene so atmospheric.
For normal 5.1 or 7.1 content you can feel the surround effect but it is not as good as a complete home theater set up with rear speakers but for a sound bar it is really good.
For Atmos content you can feel the height and depth of the sound but to be honest it is not the convincing you will need a complete atmos set up to really experience dolby atmos but as the 5.1 and 7.1 the atmos from this soundbar is really good.
In conclusion:
If you want to buy this soundbar you should buy it for its excellent sound quality not for the surround effect. So if you don’t have a space for a complete home theater set up this soundbar is really one of the best choices you have.

It was very impressive seeing how easy it is nowadays to hook up a high quality sound system: one HDMI cable from satellite receiver to soundbar, and one HDMI cable from soundbar to TV. This enables the soundbar’s settings to be displayed on theTV. Very clever.
Sound is excellent, easy to use, everything is well integrated.

Ohh man i love this sound system; subwoofer is definitely good and and sound-bar is definitely making it good to watch movies and if you have upgraded streaming services than you will definitely enjoy the surround sound effects and theater like feeling when you feel rumble by your feet and couch. Only reason 4 star is because had an issue with subwoofer not turning on and had to reconnect it to soundbar. But other than that everything is awesome.

Hi Dodge577, We're glad that you love this ST5000 Soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatibility. This soundbar was designed to deliver an immersive, cinematic audio experience at home with three-dimensional surround sound. And, the 7.1.2 speaker channels completely envelop you in sound, even from above. 800W of power and 2 levels of vocal enhancement will ensure you don’t miss a moment of your content. I think the sound quality and range of the "surround" was the best of the soundbars I've tried, including the Samsung HW-K950. I liked the crispness even though it could've used some more warmth but I believe you can tweak to your liking. I would recommend it to someone looking for a soundbar but is aware that this soundbar can take up quite a bit of room.

Pushed soundbar when it was $300 off prior to Black Friday. Went from full surround sound system to Dolby Atmos soundbar and extremely happy. Will probably purchase the rear speakers at some point, but not a must with quality of the soundbar. Really easy to set up, and I have three 4K sources running through it to my 4K TV. Highly recommend product.

At first, it seemed a little pricey, but hearing it and seeing how it operated in the store convinced me. It was easy to set up and when I needed help with a connection, the help line took care of me very quickly and professionally. People can't believe that I get such great sound with just the bar and the woofer. It makes for a very clean set-up.

Decided to go all out and get this sound bar after trying the lg and boy it was a good choice. You will will feel the bass. Sound is clear. I'm still trying to get a good movie to hear the dolby atmos effect.
One problem that I've faced is when I connected my blu ray player, the ease no picture passing though the arc connection to the TV. After reconnecting again it seemed to work. This happened again when I rented a movie from redbox. I hope this doesn't persist. Otherwise its a great soundbar.

It all started by approaching the sound bar that was on display at one of the stores. We were just browsing around and ran into one of the gentlemen that worked there in that department. We then began to ask questions about the sound bar and he began to run the demo for us. Let me tell you this by far the most amazing crystal clear sound I have ever heard from a sound bar. The 3-D ATMOS surround is definitely something to experience in your living room! It was definitely one thing listening to it in the store and it was on a whole other level once I have the sound bar set up in my living room. My overall recommendation this five stars without a doubt. It is a little on the pricey side of the sound bars but let me tell you if you have any doubts just check it out for yourself at the store and you tell me how you feel about it!

Got a very good price on an "Excellent" open box but it was still a lot of money. My unit was April production so wasn't up-to-date with current firmware; therefore, a DTS issue (later). Having updated firmware in other devices many times in the past, figured there wouldn't be a problem with this. WRONG! Trying to follow the instructions in the manual proved to be unbelievably frustrating. When I pushed the HOME button on the soundbar remote, instead of a soundbar menu, I got nothing on the TV screen; only the word HOME on the soundbar display. Thank you Geek Squad.
This was a Geek Squad installation along with wall mount of LG OLEDC65P. The professional installer suggested connecting the TV and soundbar via optical cable because HDMI ARC causes lots of problems. It did appear to work and the sound was really amazing to this "tin ear".
After the installer left, I was checking out the new system and then the fun began. We love "Hugo" (Blu-ray) and were thrilled at the video on the new LG OLED. But, where's the sound? The system detected the DTS audio track but obviously couldn't decode it because the firmware hadn't been updated. Now I really wanted that firmware update. I eventually decided to replace the optical cable with HDMI ARC. Lo and behold, the soundbar could talk to the TV and I was able to see the menu and complete the firmware update. Yes, the DTS track was decoded and I had great sound from my Hugo Blu-ray. The System now has current firmware.
The other problem I continue to have stems from my particular system configuration. I'm trying to control the system with a Harmony One Universal remote which was done with the previous separate speaker system. A Sirius XM receiver uses 3.5mm jack to output audio to the 3.5mm analog input of the soundbar. Switching the soundbar to the analog input has been very hit or miss. Often I wind up having to turn on the TV so I can see the soundbar menu and select the analog input. I provide music to the pool area using a separate amp and speaker system controlled by the Harmony remote.
The installation issue isn't a knock about the soundbar but the switching problem is--not insurmountable but I don't expect to need "workarounds" to use a $1100+ soundbar. If the switching problem can be resolved, I'll upgrade to 5 stars.
GREAT SYSTEM, I'D BUY IT AGAIN!
P.S. Review of the installation instructions and manuals can often be found on manufacturers' web sites. Google can also help prepare you to deal with whomever is doing your installation--even yourself.

This soundbar sounds so much better than I ever could have expected. I knew that at this price point the sound quality had to be good, even excellent...but wow after setup was I amazed at how clear and immersive it would sound.
After going through the somewhat annoying setup process - I would have preferred one of those microphone tuning processes instead of manually measuring ceiling height, etc - I havent changed the settings at all. And while this system cannot completely and accurately reproduce a full 7.1.2 system (no actual rear speakers), the soundstage it presents to the user is really really good.
The Martian & Game of Thrones 4k UHD Blu-ray w/Atmos sounds amazing. I hear sounds that I did not know even existed during previous viewings. The bass is powerful and shakes the picture frames hanging from my wall. Also convenient is that the sound bar remote has control for master volume as well as the subwoofer which was a bonus I was not aware of prior to purchase.
I recently played some music of questionable bitrate/quality (Apple Music iOS app) via bluetooth and cranked it up to be pleasantly surprised with the great sound.
For reference, I have this paired with a Sony 65XBR850C & UBP-X700
PROS
- crystal clear sound
- strong, accurate bass
- pretty convincing downward sound via the Atmos upward firing speakers
- wireless sub
CONS
- setup feels like it is stuck in the 90s rather than the future
- Some trouble producing convincing rear sound though mostly not noticeable
- this is a reach, but i wish it would sync with my Sonos system i have throughout the house.

Great also if you have a newer Sony TV. The setup is very easy and sound quality is top notch. The only knock against it is the lack of physical surround sound speakers. The system tries to throw the sound behind you but clearly, back speakers would be much better. You can buy them for $200 a piece but as of right now, they don't stay reliably connected and are expensive.

I would actually rate this 4.5 because of some quirks. The sound bar sounds great. I have it connected via e-arc to my sony x900e 4K, components connected to the soundbar itself. At first, I couldn't see anything when my apple TV tried to turn on HDR. I later learned I had to adjust the "enhancement" mode on the TV itself to allow it to work. I really like the bluetooth capability to send audio to my bluetooth headphones but Bose QC35 II do not work, as mentioned by another reviewer. Mostly hear static. But my beats BT headphones worked fine. When I watch direcTV, the first time i press guide or dvr, the soundbar mode switches back and forth between tv and soundbar audio which delays watching for several seconds. That's just annoying. The retail price is very expensive. Wait for the sale!

Hi Chrisk,
Thank you for the feedback on your experience with your HT-X8500. We are glad to hear it works great with your TV. We also appreciate your feedback regarding on the audio switching between TV and audio system back and forth. A time gap between the sound and picture may occur depending on the sound source. Make sure to install the latest software version of the soundbar for optimum performance: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/home-theater-sound-bars-home-theater-systems/ht-st5000/downloads/00016979.
Your TV has a function that adjusts the delay between the picture and sound. You can use it to adjust the delay between the picture and sound when the sound does not match the pictures on the TV screen by going to the TV Settings — [Display & Sound] — [Audio output] — [A/V sync] — the desired option. For more details, refer to the link below.
Thanks for purchasing our HT-X8500 and for choosing Sony! -Jess

This is the best soundbar and subwoofer combo for 7.1 Dolby Atmos sound. If you don’t want a full home theatre setup, this is the best route. This system will make your floors shake :)

bought this because we returned the lg 7.1.4 atmos soundbar. Which was great until connection issues with satellite speakers. This Sony packs a punch. Gets loud and the sub will thump a house. My only problem with it is that to truly create atmos surround sound you need satellite speakers. Unfortunately this bar doesn't allow any to pair with it. Overall it's a great soundbar. Catch it on sale. Or get one with satellite speaker capability.

Because we were replacing the carpet with hard flooring in our family room and would no longer have the option to hide the speaker wires on our 5.1 AVR system we decided to go with a soundbar system. After some research, I settled on the Nakamichi Shockwafe Elite 7.2.4 surround system. However, it was going to be about a week before it arrived, so I decided to try out the Sony ST5000. It was listed as a competitor and available for pickup at the store. I liked the virtually nonexistent footprint of the one sub and soundbar versus the AVR sub, center, and 4 surround speakers of my old 5.1 system. The quality and function of the soundbar were top-notch and sound was clear and crisp. However, even and maximum output the system was lacking. The punch of the sub was adequate but not able to do justice to Dolby Atmos recordings. And without any towers the virtual surround from the soundbar just was not able to produce the immersive sound I had with discrete surround speakers.
Once my Nakamichi arrived, I switched out the Sony and it was readily apparent that the Sony is simply no match for the Nakamichi. I am not sure that it is even a fair comparison between the two systems. In its own right, the Sony is really great 7.1.2 system. But it is a true soundbar system consisting of only a soundbar producing virtual surround combined with a single sub. Whereas the Nakamichi is a 7.2.4 system consisting of 2 subs and 2 discrete surround speakers so it is more of a hybrid soundbar and discrete surround system. And the Nakamichi price point is $300 less than the Sony.
Obviously, the Nakamichi has a bigger footprint with the extra sub and 2 discrete surround speakers. But theater systems are about the sound. And while the Sony has a great sound it lacks power and immersion. I wasted no time in returning the Sony.
