Wow! So much more than I expected
||Posted .This soundbar sounds so much better than I ever could have expected. I knew that at this price point the sound quality had to be good, even excellent...but wow after setup was I amazed at how clear and immersive it would sound. After going through the somewhat annoying setup process - I would have preferred one of those microphone tuning processes instead of manually measuring ceiling height, etc - I havent changed the settings at all. And while this system cannot completely and accurately reproduce a full 7.1.2 system (no actual rear speakers), the soundstage it presents to the user is really really good. The Martian & Game of Thrones 4k UHD Blu-ray w/Atmos sounds amazing. I hear sounds that I did not know even existed during previous viewings. The bass is powerful and shakes the picture frames hanging from my wall. Also convenient is that the sound bar remote has control for master volume as well as the subwoofer which was a bonus I was not aware of prior to purchase. I recently played some music of questionable bitrate/quality (Apple Music iOS app) via bluetooth and cranked it up to be pleasantly surprised with the great sound. For reference, I have this paired with a Sony 65XBR850C & UBP-X700 PROS - crystal clear sound - strong, accurate bass - pretty convincing downward sound via the Atmos upward firing speakers - wireless sub CONS - setup feels like it is stuck in the 90s rather than the future - Some trouble producing convincing rear sound though mostly not noticeable - this is a reach, but i wish it would sync with my Sonos system i have throughout the house.

Great sound, but an expensive 3.1.2 and NO DTS
|Posted .This is a bit tough, this soundbar sounds great, but doesn’t live up to it’s claim and comes in at such a high price. Maybe if you have an ideal small space it can good. Bottomline, if you’re looking for immersive surround, then this isn’t it. While the sound quality is quite impressive, at best this is a 3.1.2 front surround speaker. It also lacks DTS support, which is unacceptable for such a premium product. Even with good performance, great build quality, and ease of use, the high price tag is a hard sell. Claiming 7.1.2 at such high price, I expected to have better sound bouncing technology or wireless satellite speakers. However, if you need Atmos for a small space and don’t mind the lack of immersion, and have cash to spare, then you might be happy with the sound this thing can put out. Good: -Great sounds -Build quality is solid and hefty -Subwoofer is good -Easy to setup and use -Support standard 4k features, sound upscaling, and pass through Bad: -Not immersive “7.1.2” -No DTS support -Remote too simple and feels cheap -Price -Voices can sound quiet during movies Set up: Setting up is easy. There’s 3 HDMI outs and ethernet port, which is pretty nice for a soundbar. Once connected, you can run easy setup to configure the network and go into the setup menu to set your levels and distances of your ceiling. It may be too simple. You can set the levels of the front as a whole, upfiring speakers, and the sub. Distance can only be set up with the ceiling speakers. There’s no calibration mic to use. Functions: Everything is quite easy to use. You mostly just have to select the input and sound field of your choice. The menus are easy to navigate and options are there as they should with each options explaining what it does. If anything, I would say the remote is too simple. You have to cycle through all the different sound fields with a single button and there’s two buttons to cycle through the inputs. I tried all the functions except for the streaming services and chomecast, and all worked well. Performance: I had low expectation that this soundbar would live up to it’s claim of full “immersive, cinematic audio,” and unfortunately I was right. It is capable of producing full and deep sounds rivaling bigger speakers, but it is not a full immersive 7.1.2 surround. It’s 3.1.2, with the Atmos speakers bouncing sound on the ceiling that will give you a sense of sound coming from high front speakers rather than on directly above you. There’s no sense that sound is coming from the sides or rear. It would take an ideal setup, which is a small enclosed space with low ceilings, in order for the sound to bounce properly. For movies, I started out with Mad Max Fury Road, and the explosions were loud and booming. The subwoofer packed quite a punch for one that small. The whizzing sounds were audible from side to side, but mostly from the front and not immersive. The vocals were low on the default setting, and turning on the “Voice” option helped but it muddled the other sounds a bit. Next I tried Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, and again was not impressed. The biggest issue here is that this soundbar doesn’t decode DTS. I tried Deadpool, and it was being outputted as Linear PCM. That’s a major issue as many movies are DTS and is not acceptable in a modern sound system. I’ve had 3 receivers in the last 10 years, including Sony latest Atmos receiver, that decodes DTS. Music actually sound fine to me. I’m not a big enough audiophile to be able to discern the differences between normal and the upscaled near hi-res music. Soundstage was good, vocals were clear, and mids and lows were fine to me. Streaming with bluetooth is simple and the quality is as expected from wireless. Playing from USB produced was consistent and quite nice. I just can’t fully recommend this. Yes the sound is really good, and had this been a typical front firing soundbar at a lower cost, or have included satellite speakers, then I would have given it 5 stars. There are other soundbars out there that can produced a better immersive experience. At this price, you could buy an entry level Atmos receiver and decent speakers that will give you real surround sound.

Not worth the money

Sony<JBL
||Posted .I decided to try out this out despite already owning the JBL 9.1 Atmos bar. Was expecting it to be better (especially being Sony). Surprisingly, it lacked power. The sub lacks power and the Atmos isn’t as immersive as the JBL unit is. Decided to return it and keep my JBL 9.1 system. I will say this, I was incredibly impressed with all the tweaks you can do in the settings. I can see it overwhelming a lot of users who aren’t very technical.

Sony Beats ALL!
||Posted .I bout the Bose Soundtouch and within 20 seconds of comparing I knew the Sony was the best on the market (for a soundbar) Its very clear but full. I love that you can adjust the sub, top fill ( ceiling bounce) and center speakers to balance to your room. I am blowing away by the sound quality. DON'T BUY BOSE!

Excellent - I've Rediscovered Music and Sound!
|Posted .The Sonly HT-ST5000 Soundbar is awesome. Admittedly, it's not inexpensive, but it's worth every bit of the price. My last soundbar was old and basic, but an improvement over TV speakers. The Sony system revived my appreciation of good music and quality sound. Basic installation was simple. It was up and working for TV sound quickly. I was a bit overwhelmed by the vast number of features and options when I previewed the manual. However, once I sat down and began to work with it I found it very accessible. The full set-up was new to me in that you plug your video accessories (devices) into the soundbar and it send a single HDMI out to the TV from which you control your sources, the soundbar and all of it's features. It actually works great. I plugged my Apple TV, Roku and Xbox into the bar and choose what I watch or listen to via the on-screen controls. Simple and elegant. The Sound is EXCELLENT and the choices of 'modes' for Clear, Movie, Music, Sports, Surround, etc. are very good. It includes 2 levels of 'Voice' settings for dialog and I found it far superior to other attempts at bringing dialog out while keeping it natural-sounding. Other features I've used so far include: 1) playing Pandora via my iPhone thru Bluetooth 2) Playing music via my Google Home thru the soundbar's built-in Chromcast, and 3) transferring the sound from my Echo Dot thru Bluetooth. Perhaps if it hadn't been so long since I'd heard sound through such a good system, I might not be as enthusiastic as I am. But since getting the Sonly HT-ST5000 Soundbar, I've actually sat down just to enjoy music. Something I haven't done in a long time.

Blown Away!
||Posted .Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This sounds so good compared to the z9f which I had previously. I dont miss having the rear speakers and the Atmos effects are amazing. There is real weight to the sub woofer that rocks every movie we've watched or game I've played. I do have to say that I use this in a smaller space with walls and ceiling in relatively close proximity....10feet or under...ceiling 6ft....so the bouncing sound is very apparent even at lower volumes. That's one reason we went to a single soundbar.....wall mounting the rear speakers just didn't work out well. The effects from the soundbar may not be as pronounced in a large room or a room with alot of other things that could absorb the sound. For us this has worked out amazing and the wife and kids all said it sounds so good. For a single soundbar I can't recommend this enough.

Great soundbar, tons of options & made very well.
||Posted .Tried a different soundbar at first but it just didn't stack up to this bad boy. Loud, clear and surprisingly heavy piece of audio equipment. Clearly made well with good components. Sounds great and while not a complete replacement for the 5.1 system i had with a receiver and towers and sub.. Its small package fits lets it fit just about anywhere (a mantle in my case) and it truly sounds (almost) as good as my previous setup. if you are looking to remove the clutter of a traditional audio system, give a sounder a try.

SURPRISE SURPRISE!
||Posted .Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.I purchased this soundbar after being seriously agrivated with the bose 700 soundbar. Had some syncing issues with the rear 700 surrounds i purchased and the 300s. Great soundbar but it was missing something without surround. I took a chance on Sony seeing how i already had a Sony Bravia oled, ps4pro and sony 4k player. I was surprised to find that this soundbar is almost like a reciever with a sound the bose was missing. I sort of new to audio terminology but i assume that atmos had a lot to do with this. I dont need surround sound speakers really but some would have been nice to add. Only downside but this is a must buy in my book!

Sony 7.1 2Channel
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. It's a nice system but the chirping and crackle that comes from the sub woofer is a problem especially since the sub has never been damaged. After doing some research I found out that I wasn't the only person experiencing this issue w/ the sub. It seems to be a manufacturer problem that I hope gets figured out & corrected. Aside from this I can say it does it's job, it's over priced though, for $1400 I could have put a quality sound system together w/ Dolby Atmos and lots more sound decoders that this Sony system offers. All in all do your homework first and lots of comparison shopping before purchasing.

Decent, but not worth the price tag even on sale.
||Posted .Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. It’s a Sony and it’s their top end soundbar, should be great right? Well i was unimpressed. I’ll be fair and say i am not an audio nut but i do know that soundbars are not going to replicate a true 5.1/7.1 traditional system. However, i still expected Sony’s $1500 soundbar to provide great sound. It did not do this for us. It might have been our lack of fine tuning the settings, but despite my tinkering, i couldn’t get it to sound good in any setting. We had this connected via ultra high speed HDMI (48gbps) thru eARC but it still lacked results. For this price point, i would look elsewhere.
