Great Camera for those who have been shooting Minolta/sony for a long time all your A/AF lenses work but the kit 16-50 lens is great. I've hardly taken it off. Fine JPEG results in 18-20 MByte image files A bit much for volume shooting (Not a problem wit he 64 gig card I bought but they do bury your email if you try to send a lot of them... I'm familiar with Sony and like the results of the dynamic range optimizer for non HDR shots. BTW it's crazy when you are ripping off a lot of images at 12 FPS. But you certainly get a better odds of getting the timing right when your kid jumps into the pool or the right instant for the touchdown catch....

A Camera That Will Not Hold You Back

The Sony SLT-A77 is a camera that offers outstanding image quality with enough features and capability to satisfy even the most demanding enthusiasts. The A77 features the highest-resolution sensor in the APS-C segment, offering a whopping 24.3 megapixels. The images this camera is capable of producing are absolutely stunning. Aside from the sensor, the A77's other "big feature" is its translucent mirror technology, which really makes it a DSLT (digital single-lens translucent) camera vs. a traditional DSLR. In this design, the mirror of the camera is fixed in position, allowing the majority of light to pass straight through it and onto the sensor behind. The rest of the light is directed upwards to a second sensor that displays the image in a Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). This design means that the A77 can maintain focus all times since the mirror is not blocking the sensor. This results in the A77 having a maximum shooting speed of 12 FPS, which makes it among the fastest shooting cameras available. It also makes the A77 very quiet in operation as there is no "mirror-slap" during shooting. Sony is the only manufacturer using this technology and it definitely makes it unique in the marketplace. Since the A77 uses a n EVF, the image displayed in the viewfinder shows exactly the image that will be captured once the shutter is pressed...the effects of shutter speed, aperture, etc. are shown. As far as capabilities, the A77 has modes that can make the camera suited for the beginning shooter all the way to a seasoned-pro. Due to this, the learning curve to access all the A77's abilities is quite high. The A77 also features one of the best "kit" lenses on the market: the Sony 16/50mm 2.2 f lens is perfect for a wide range of shooting situations, with a very fast F-stop of 2.2 at all focal lengths. This lens alone retails for over $700 when purchased separately, which only adds to the A77's value. While Sony can't boast of the lens line-up of Nikon or Canon, they certainly have the most commonly used prime, zoom and specialty lens-types covered including many that are made for exclusively for Sony by Zeiss, one of the industry's best lens makers. If you are serious about your photography, are looking for camera that you won't soon outgrow (if ever) and have not built up an inventory of Canon or Nikon lenses, the A77 is should be near the top of a very short list. Nikon's new D7100 and Canon's aging 7D are the most popular competitors to the A77, and while they may offer slightly better image quality at higher ISO settings, can't match the Sony's extensive feature set.

the A77 is impressive: it features a new 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 12fps full-resolution shooting and 1080p60 movies with autofocus. I am still a big fan of Canon, but this A77 is everything like the Conon. If you are willing to get even a better Sonly camera then you should check out the A99.

I purchased this camera to shoot my daughter and her dance team, my old camera did not have a high shutter rate and most of the action pictures were not useful because the taking a picture of a spinning child leads to lots of bad shots if you can't take fast pictures and lots of frames per second. I ended up with lots of pictures of her side or back as she spins and kicks her way across the stage. The A77 is fast, in the auto mode and the scene setting for sports this camera takes mad number of photos per second, thank god I had a large memory card that could hold plenty of pictures because I shot over 1800 photos during an hour of dance. The translucent lens allows the camera to stay focused during the continuous shooting or you can lock the focus on one thing and it will keep that item in focus as it moves. this camera makes me a better photographer. I can't comment on the video output of the camera because I have not had a chance to test it.

I love this camera even though it didnt come with a case or the 150 mm lens. The pictures are amazing and it is very stable in a wavering hand. I researched this product and compared it to all of the Canons and Nikons...Sony did a great job again

Coming from primarily Canon and Nikon OVF's, the move to the EVF was the biggest concern of mine. I've adapted well, and the OLED simply has to be "tried" to appreciate it. The only lighting I've found it difficult to handle is "high contrast" situations in daylight. I simply am loving every aspect of this camera and the 16-50 f/2.8 lens is exceptional - especially considering the price! I have not picked up my Canon and/or Nikon equipment since getting the a77. It is just a pleasure to use! Also picked up a NEX-6 which I just got and seems to be a great little camera for travel.

While a bit on the heavy side due to the lens, it is a good trade off for the low light pictures and sharpness. I love the quietness of the camera; no clunky noise that can sometimes be disturbing to those nearby. Excellent value for the price. I upgraded from an alpha 55 and the difference is everything I expected.

Feature for feature no other camera comes close except for the Sony Alpha A99 which is more expensive. Sony bought Minolta so it will be giving Canon and Nikon a run. I returned my Canon 60D to upgrade to the Sony the cost were close but the canon was missing GPS, 3D and Panoramic.

Love, love, love this camera. The picture quality are stunning, the lens that come with this camera is very good. The size can be a little big to carry around for a long extend period of time. But the final pictures are well worth it. If the budget allow, just get this camera! you will not disappointed.

Have only had this a few days, but it's a keeper. Upgrading from A55, and went to the only local (40 miles# independent photo shop around. #we own a small tackle shop and are willing to pay more for knowledge & good service. But they poo-poo'd the Sony DSLR's and recommended a Canon 4Ti. (which they didn't have and needed to order#. Checked with Best Buy, and staff surprisingly seemed more knowledgeable, but wondered why 4Ti instead of 5Ti...Or maybe even 600D. They didn't have the A65 A77 in the store, so we couldn't try them. We decided on the 5Ti. After trying it 2 days knew it was going back. You wouldn't think the shutter speed would would make much difference, but the photos I took at a dog agility match just didn't catch as much as my old A55. Plus, it was really noisy #physically, not photos# That, coupled with the having to do video with the LCD #difficult in the sun#, and manually switching from LCD to viewfinder shooting was really frustrating. The Canon went back #with no return issues#, and we ordered the A77 through the web site. Only had it for 2 days, so can't comment on much except LOVE the speed #I can now get the great action shots I got before without having to be as perfect on MY timing, and it is significantly quieter. Plus I love the viewfinder, and it's actually easier to use for reviewing/deleting unwanted photos than the old A55. The down side is that it is heavy and bulky, but I've also gone from a compact body to a mid-size body. I'll deal with the weight for the performance. Also purchased the 18-250 Zoom lens but haven't tried it yet. I am an amateur and don't understand all the features, but this camera is making me want to learn more about the fine points. I shoot lots of video and stills of dog sports and fishing, so being able to catch the right shot is important. I have no problem holding the shutter release down to catch the right picture, and if I have to delete 30 shots to get the right one I'm happy.

    Upgraded from Sony SLT A57!!!

I recently purchased the a77 as an upgrade from my a57. Both cameras produce excellent quality pics. The LCD's are the same size, but as for the a77, there are more options. The EVF on the a77 is an OLED, but to tell you the truth, I can't really tell this difference between the two models. As for shooting speed, the AF on the a77 is incredibly fast..there are 19 focus points in the a77 as compared to the 15 focus points with a57. One of the main reasons for my upgrade is that the a77 is weather-sealed. Really looking forward to shooting more outdoor events! The purchase included the 16-50 lens. Let me tell you, this is my new everyday lens! The lens has a constant 2.8 aperture. It's well built, metal casing with rubber zoom ring. Weighs as much as the camera body. The lens has a lock to prevent "lens creep". This camera might be a little much for the beginner but for the more advanced shooter, you won't be dissappointed!

I think I have owned or used every brand of camera out there. I have been the happiest with the two Sony high end cameras over the years. This one is absolutely perfect and versatile. I bought first week it was out and took stunning photos and HD video as well on visit to the east coast. I love this camera and the fact that it is backed by Sony. This camera does it all....no need to lug around a still camera and video. It's all in one small package!

The flash started to flash 3-4 times before taking picture, it wasn't that way before. The 55-300mm doesn't focus great on its own. The 16-55mm lens is too big. Overall good features but the price is way too high.
