Unique speaker solution with mediocre performance

The Sony NB-10 wireless neckband speaker is a unique solution for those who want a personal audio experience without putting on a headphone. And in some cases, this speaker does do that, albeit with some sacrifices. The thing that got my attention most was how light it is, and how well made it seems like. Even though it’s made with a mix of soft-touch materials and feels quite flexible, it is well put together and you can feel the quality of the finish. It has an IPX rating so is convenient to use without a lot of fuss. Overall, “wearing” the neckband is not uncomfortable at all, and I got used to it pretty quickly. Setting up with Bluetooth was a breeze with my Android smartphones, tablet, and a Windows 10-based laptop. Especially whenever it’s ON and near my phone, a notification pops up to connect to it. Also the Android “Find my Device” seems to work when it’s connected, so it can ring - this helps finding it when buried in a mess. As for connectivity, it has Bluetooth 5.1 and a theoretical 30 m of range. However, it only supports SBC and AAC audio codecs - no aptX or LDAC which usually offers higher fidelity. But this point is mute due to the limitation of the speakers. With all these bells and whistles, I was looking for a decent listening experience, and that’s where I found this neckband speaker lacking. I got an impression that this will provide a good “private” experience, but that’s far from the truth. Just like a speaker, even though the sound is focused upwards towards my ears, everyone else in the room was able to hear what I was listening to quite clearly - even with a very low volume. Obviously it was creating less “disturbance” than my regular bluetooth speaker, but still it’s far from “personal”. As for sonic performance, it was mediocre at best - voices from podcasts were good and clear, but any type of music sounded muddy. Worst of all, I couldn’t find any way to change the EQ settings. Sony boasts it has passive radiators, but from the muddy to almost non-existent bass I am not convinced. Another thing that I found to be disappointing is the dual connectivity feature. I was enthusiastic that now I’ll be able to use my laptop and my android smartphone simultaneously (without disconnecting/reconnecting), but in actuality, I couldn’t use the 2 systems in the same manner. Only 1 can be connected as a headphone, while the other must regress back to the Bluetooth Handset profile. Thus I could only get music from my phone, and headset facility from my laptop at the same time - I couldn’t take a call on my phone with this setup. This was a big letdown for me and I ended up giving up this feature. In a nutshell, this is a well-built and designed product that does not reach its full potential. I hope future iterations will be better and make it more useful. For now, I’ll stick to my headphones while I share my work-from-home space with my spouse.

      Hi Malik,

We are really sorry if the bass sound of our SRS-NB10 Wireless Neckband Speaker didn't live up to your expectations and that it had to be returned. This is certainly not the news we'd like to hear from you. For the bass sound, this usually depends on the source that you're playing and audio device that you are using. Some of these issues can be fixed by adjusting the equalizer function or the bass sound settings of the connected device.

Your feedback matters to us as it helps us improve our products.

We value you and we are hoping that you'll consider Sony again in your future purchase.

      Sincerely,

Very Comfortable, Not Great Sound for Music

The Sony SRS-NB10 wireless neckband speakers are apparently being marketed to the work-from-home individual, where you would use these as your speaker and mic for your online meetings. That focus on the voice quality comes at the sacrifice of music quality, but if you understand their apparent primary purpose, that can be an acceptable trade-off. The positives: These have to be one of the best-designed around-the-neck headphones I’ve used. They’re ergonomic and conform to your actual shoulder & neck, so unlike others where they stick out straight from your shoulders & then flop around when you run or do vigorous exercise, these stay put. Their weight is perfectly balanced and they become nearly unnoticeable when wearing them. Connection is quick and seamless, as most Bluetooth-enabled devices are today. Powering it on as a new device was immediately recognized by my Android device and I was offered to pair (without having to manually enter pairing mode). Range of the Bluetooth was also excellent, with me being able to easily walk into the kitchen or another room while connected to my laptop or phone without losing signal. Battery life is good. While I recharge it before they’re completely dead, they’re rated at 20 hours of use. With rapid charging via USB-C you can get an hour of use on 10 minutes of charge if you run it all the way down. Sound quality is good AND bad. Again, these appear to be marketed toward using at home for work meetings, and for that, they’re good. The sound is loud and crystal clear, powered by speakers that face upwards from the face of the headphones, directing that sound more toward your ears and less out into the environment. The mic is also excellent, it picks up noise from you speaking quite well without picking up excessive ambient noise. Now, where this goes bad is that the speakers are very tinny – there is very little bass composition to the sound from the speakers, so when using with music they’re poor. The music again is clear, but almost like you turned the treble settings all the way up and the bass all the way down. It sounded like an old AM radio. So this is where I’m torn. But understanding these aren’t being marked like a set of Beats, where music is the one thing they’re worried about, I can give that sound quality for music a pass. They are also advertised as IPX4 water resistant, so they’re advertised as being resistant to “splashes”, but again I’m not willing to give that a try for this review. The negatives: Again, you have to start with that music sound quality. There is also no app for phone-to-headphones integration. Sony has a “Sony Headphones Connect” app, but it does not pick up these headphones. Perhaps it’s because they’re relatively new and will be added to the app (or a new app created) later, but at the time of this review, there was no app. The lack of an app means no ability to control the sound EQ settings, which may have fixed some of the “tinny” sound, no update to the firmware, and no ability to see on your phone what the battery level is. Overall: Again, these are great headphones for voice-only sound. Unbelievably comfortable around your neck with great overall functionality. But if you’re looking for a set of headphones where you can use them to listen to music at high quality all day or on a walk or run, understand you’re getting less-than-stellar sound quality for music. I would easily give these 5 stars if the sound for music were better and if there was an app that I could use to work with the headphones.

The Sony SRS-NB10 wireless neckband speaker is great for in the office or working at home. The neckband is specifically designed for work. So far all of my calls have been perfect and I could hear the person on the other line perfectly and they could also hear me perfectly. The speakers project right up to your ear. Its great because the loudness does not hurt your ears like earbuds. Also the band is light weight so after a minute you forget its even on. For the microphone, when I asked the person how they could hear me on the other line they said they could not tell a difference and my voice on their end was of high quality. While Sony advertise these are great for music I would say that they are not. While the speakers are of quailty they are really only designed for your audio calls. I played a few songs on my iphone and then watched some youtube videos and everything was very flat in sound. Now I would use these to listen to music with the volume on low while working to have some background noise but dont expect to be rocking. I would almost say that the music sounds like it is coming through a phone call if that makes sense. Ton of features including muti Bluetooth connections which allows you to connect your phone and computer to the set at the same time so you can easily switch to either device. Other features includes) usb-c quick charging (10 min charge = 60 minutes of battery_, 20hr battery life, splash resistance (IPX4), dedicated mute, volume and power buttons. There is also a dedicate button to activate your phones voice assistant (siri, google, etc.).

Right time for the form factor

The Sony NB10 Neckband speaker may just be the right form factor we need for home office work. I get tired of wearing ear buds or headsets in my home office for Zoom calls or for background music. And a wireless boombox style speaker 1) can be too loud for others around me, and 2) is not portable as I walk around the house. That's where the neckband speaker hits just the right features. PROs • It's light and comfortable without the weariness of ear buds and headsets. • 20 hours battery life, and 1 hour on a 10 minute charge. I haven't tested the longevity but have to believe it will last a long time regardless. • Excellent microphone. Phone calls and Zoom conferences will have no issue hearing you. If anything, the microphone is too sensitive and picks up all your sighs. Be careful with your quiet exasperations during meetings. • Volume, play/pause and mute buttons are easily accessible. There are some tactile differences on the buttons to help you remember which button is which. CONs • One of the biggest selling features of using this in a home office (for me) was the multi-point Bluetooth connection. That allows you to have a simultaneous connection to your phone and computer. That way, if you’re listening to music on the phone, you can easily switch over to a web conference without disconnecting/reconnecting Bluetooth. Or you can listen to music on your laptop and grab a call on your phone. Unfortunately, this is not supported when using an iPhone + Mac combo. While not every iPhone user will have a Mac, I suspect a lot of Mac users have iPhones. • The sound generally won't bother other people around you at lower volumes. But it's not magic and anything above a low volume will be heard. If you're trying to keep a completely quiet atmosphere, get a headset. It's best suited for solo workers or non-quiet environments where a little background sound will not stick out. • Sound is good, not outstanding. The clarity is excellent, especially in the voice frequencies. But this is not going to be the bass-heads choice. There is also crackling if the volume is turned up too much. And there is some popping as well when apps are launched or switched on the phone. Other • I could not get the headphones to be added to Sony's Music Center or Headphones apps on my iPhone. This speaker is not sophisticated enough to need an app. • The "horse collar" look is not stylish, but it is functional and a conversation starter on Zoom video meetings. Overall this is a somewhat niche product, but with more people working from home either full time or part time, that’s a large segment. It’s best used in low to medium low volume. And it loses a star for lack of multipoint bluetooth support for the iPhone + Mac user.

The ability to keep better tabs on things around the home and the office is where this set excels. The directional sound provided is sufficient enough to allow you to hear it clearly without disturbing anyone in the general area. You just won’t be able to turn it up too loud and expect to keep that peace up. Which can also be used a method of letting some know you don’t want to be disturbed too. The IPX4 rating is a nice feature for those who like to get away from their desk and go for a walk around the neighborhood without fear of causing water damage to the unit. And walking away from your desk is made easy by the ability to switch between two paired devices with the push of a button. The design is sleek, and the weight is nice too. Charging is easy using the USB-C charging port and the playtime gets me through a full day with no problems.

The Sony NB-10 Neckband Speakers are built for a pretty specific purpose; as long as you understand their goal, they could be very good for you. If you are expecting great entertainment and musicality, you are in the wrong place! The Sonys are very comfortable to wear, whether above or below your clothing as it sits around your neck. The controls are soft buttons along the inner-edge of the speakers. On/off, bluetooth connect, mute and volume controls are pretty much it. They are simple to use once they have been set-up to your phone or computer. They do not, however, use the Sony app to control or customize the sound. They have a very clear and concise sound, and because they are open, you still hear all the world around you. The microphone is very good and sounds very natural to callers I spoke with. These are excellent for office, Zoom, home office and places where still being able to hear what's going on around you is important. They are not sound-proof just to you, as anyone around you, depending on the volume, can hear what you hear. Battery life is really good and recharging is accomplished with USB-C (Thank you, Sony!) Now, these are very good for the specific purposes of conversation and meetings. If you are looking for great sound for music or movies, you've come to the wrong product. Bass is almost non-existent. The treble and mids are good (hence, good conversation) but that's about it. Be aware of those shortcomings on these neckband speakers and these are excellent meeting/conversation/Zoom-Call speakers!

I have wanted to try some neckband speakers since I saw my first pair some years back. These turned to be pleasing and annoying. The bluetooth connection was so transparent that I hadn't realized it happened until until I heard this little voice and wondered where it came from. So considered setup a surprising breeze. I will consider it a "senior" problem that I cannot esaily adjust the flush mounted volume controls although frankly I find it difficult to believe anyone can do this easily. Fidelity was really pretty good but some of us who are more comfortable with classic rock will need to find remastered versions of their favorites otherwise the "center" channel virtually disappears and you get different insturmental tracks a each ear. Disconcerting to say the least. I give these 3 stars, 5 for ease of setup, 2 for ease or use and sound.

How to answer a call - Sony doesn’t tell you

I think these are good neck speakers. The sound is not that extraordinary for music, but I think it is for voice (ie, calls). I was a bit under the wrong impression that the sound is so directional that people around you would barely be able to hear it, but that’s not true. I guess that is not what Sony was trying to accomplish with these. My family could definitely hear what I was playing even when I had the volume turned down relatively low. Anyway, I have a small bone to pick and that is with the instructions included with the hardware. I wish Sony would get up to speed with the times and either include minimal (but important) features via pictures and diagrams or give clear, concise instructions. I felt like the paperwork included with the neck speakers are akin to the package insert you get with prescription medication when your pharmacist gives you the manufacturer’s bottle. Probably the most important feature Sony should have included was how to answer a call - that is, after all, the main point of these speakers. But, I couldn’t find it anywhere in the ‘instructions.’ Granted it was relatively easy to figure out, but still an important oversight on Sony’s part.

This is amazing. No dirty phones on my ears. My hands are free to type, write, and or eat. When I am on a call it as if the other person is in the room because there is nothing on my head, in my hands, or on my ears! I can listen to my music or an audio book in between phone calls and it doesn't bother anyone in office or at home. I don't have to be bothered with buds in my ears or headsets over my ears making them all hot and sweaty or running to find them when I get a call. It just hangs out on your shoulders. It easily connects to your phone or other bluetooth device. Full Battery life easily lasts all day. Really cool how the sound bounces off of your shoulders to project to your ears. Always have loved Sony quality too. Feels well made, lightweight, soft touch materials.

Bought to use while I am exercising upstairs and want to hear the TV downstairs (my gym is in a loft) After fiddling with the Sony TV to get it to pair, it is working now, but all volume is transferred to the headed and TV audio is muted (thus 4 not 5 stars) Once I figure that out, I will update my rating Unit itself is compact, comfortable and the sound is adequate. Stereo yes, but compared to in ear or over ear is not the same. I would compare to a bone conducting model

This neck band speaker is nice. It works great with my phone, was easy to pair and the sound quality is good. They were not so great for my Zoom or Teams calls. The sound would cut out for notifications on the laptop, so if a new email came in sound would drop from my meeting. I ended up closing my email so I could hear better. I was told that my voice sounded robotic or digitized when I would speak sometimes, even though I was right in front of my laptop. But, for using with my phone or listening to music or podcasts I think they work fine. I imagine they would be great to watch TV with as well.
