A Theatre-Like Experience!

Want a theatre-like experience at home? Well, if you have a decent TV or projector, combined with the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad, you can be confident that you will get an immersive experience like no other. This is my review of the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad.
*TLDR at the bottom
=========================
RECOMMENDATIONS/SETUP:
This home theatre surround sound system has everything you need to get started with setting up a theatre-like experience at home. If you get this shipped to your home, I suggest making sure you have everything that is supposed to be included and checking if everything is intact. The box the system arrives in is not the best in protecting the unit and the insides, as a result, things may be all over the place upon opening the box. I am speaking from personal experience.
Anyways, the setup does take about half an hour or so, depending on how you plan to set up the system. Sony gives two options. The speakers can be placed on a table/shelf, or the speaker can be wall mounted. I chose the former as I had space available for these speakers in my living room. Once they are in place, download the Sony BRAVIA Connect App and follow the instructions to get the unit set up. While the app does let you skip some steps, I suggest going through the entire setup to get everything setup perfectly. I did run into some bugs with the app that had me set up the unit again, and at other times, the app didn’t recognize the unit. But a simple restart of the app or unit did clear up most of those problems.
=========================
SOUND QUALITY (MOVIES, VIDEOS):
One of the first things I did with this system was of course watch some trailers that would eventually lead to a film. One of the trailers I watched was Godzilla Minus One. If I had to choose one word to describe this system, it would be immersive. The soundstage on this home theatre system is vast and amazing. Around the beginning of the trailer, the lows of Godzilla stomping seriously echoed throughout the living room and rattled the floor. The dialogue was clear, and the sound of gunfire and carnage sounded great! After getting a taste of what this system could do, I decided to finally watch a film. I decided to go with the first Blade Runner from 1982. The film is a little older and the sound is not as “clean” compared to something from a newer film but luckily, the entire movie still fits into today’s standards really well. The film felt immersive from beginning to end, the soundtrack sounded great, and the dialogue was clean. I did end up turning on voice mode for testing purposes but luckily it did not affect much of the film's other sound too much. While the lows were good, I do think a subwoofer would provide an even more immersive experience. With the current price tag, I do think a subwoofer should have been included. An extra subwoofer would certainly allow this system to reproduce that booming sound that movie theatres have.
=========================
SOUND QUALITY (MUSIC):
This system has Bluetooth and Spotify Connect which I used to wirelessly stream music. Luckily, both worked flawlessly for me. Spotify Connect can be used while in the Spotify app, simply click on the devices icon and select the Sony Home Theatre System. I suggest making sure your phone and the system are connected to the same network if you run into any issues. I was able to play a variety of genres from Hip Hop, Rock, Electronic, Latin, and Pop. The 360 audio brought an immersive listening experience. For example, this was clear in some of the electronic songs where the different instruments would slowly come in eventually leading to a beat drop. Standing in the middle of this system feels like the band or artist is performing a personal concert for you. Again, lows, while good, could be a lot better with a subwoofer.
=========================
FEATURES:
One of the neat features of this surround system is the Sound Field Optimization setting. This “sound optimization” can be done in the app, within settings. This feature calibrates the sound of the system based on where you are sitting and the type of room you are in. The app can also be used as a remote control if you happen to lose the one included. (the included remote is tiny) There are also some sound modes available to choose from. Sound field is the default mode, voice mode is self-explanatory, and night mode seems to enhance the lows at low volume. Some features I would love Sony to include within the app are an EQ setting or more modes (music, movie, podcast, etc.).
=========================
CONCLUSION/TLDR:
Overall, this is an excellent home theatre surround sound system. The setup does take a while but once you are through it, you will be blessed with some great-sounding and immersive speakers. Movies, videos, and music all sound amazing on this system. The highs and mids stand out the most. While the lows are good, the addition of a subwoofer would improve those lows and reproduce that grand sound from the lows that movie theatres have. I do think one should have been included with this system, especially with the current price tag. All of this is controlled with the tiny remote or the app. The app is a little buggy at times but works well for the most part. However, I do wish there were more modes included or some type of EQ to fine-tune your desired sound. Regardless, if you are looking for a home theatre surround sound system, you cannot go wrong with trying this one out!

Background and farewell to classic wired subwoofers:
I haven't had a surround sound system in quite some time since my Onkyo 5.1 finally gave up the ghost after 15 years of faithful service and all that was working was the massive wired subwoofer which I kept and used with three subsequent sound bars starting small with a Vizio, upgrading to a Sanyo and finally my current soundbar is a Sennheiser Ambeo Plus 7.1.4 which is about a year old. It has provided me with almost 25yrs of faithful service.
I liked that all three sound bars physically connected to my old Onkyo subwoofer which was a beast but alas modern times have caught up to it and the Sony HTA9M2 will only work with Sony branded wireless bluetooth subwoofers. For a complete, immersive experience, properly enriched sound stage along with extended bass, it is better to consider this a $2900 or $3200 based system as the SW3 200w sub and SW5 500w sub cost $400 and $700 respectively.
Arrival, unboxing and required app for use:
Arriving in a very large box clocking in at 33lbs, inside you will find a classic Sony layout of items with a straight forward guide to get your control box up and running and then speakers setup ready to use. Setting up everything was very straight forward and each speaker has its own compartment in the box with everything you need. Everything is clearly marked (Front L, Front R, Rear L, Rear R) along with place/directional guides. I love that you get the floor stands and optional wall mounts as that will be the eventual placement for our speakers both front and rear. All four speakers come with a very healthy run of power cabling that is thin and flexible making it easy to work with and place. The control box looks and feels like a mix of an older Apple TV and a Mac Mini.
Documentation is basic in nature without any detailed explainations past the basic speaker/box cabling setup. Anything else if you need it will have to be via app exploration or online help but everything felt and proceeded intuitively.
The speakers are very well made and feel solid and polished. I very much like the grey, industrial look they have. The control box has a nifty display on the front that will show you various text prompts depending on what you are doing and/or what is going on when in use. The remote almost feels like an afterthought because the system is clearly designed around using the app. It is very small with minimal functions but it does have the basics (IE volume, etc..) so once you configure your setup with the app, you could rely just on the remote for rudimentary functionality. For any type of fine tuning, you will have to use the app.
Once your hardware is physically setup, all that's left to do is download the Bravia App and get things setup properly. There is a QR Code right on the quick setup portion of the packaging and it will take you right to the app to download. You will need a Sony account which can be created during setup (it uses your mobile browser for this) or if your account was previously via a third party service (Apple, Google, etc..) or even an older Sony account (like mine) you will now need to migrate it to an all enclusive Sony account. This was pretty straight forward too. Lots of Agree/Not Agree terms but kudos to Sony for allowing you to opt out from the bulk of it. There is no auto setup feature like the Sennheiser which could just use your Wifi settings and automatically setup your soundbar. I had to manually authenticate to my router but that was simple.
The app really makes it fairly easy to get up and running and after a hefty update to your control box, you set up and test the speakers, have it map the soundstage based on where you primarily sit for tv viewing and off you go. Make sure during initial setup and updating the firmware you're right next to your Sony control box with your phone/tablet so there are no time outs or issues. A few times, the app said it couldn't find/connect to my HTA9M2s, but closing and restarting it fixed the problem each time.
Once you have mapped your sound stage, you can then fine tune the settings to your liking. For example, after letting the app map and implement my sound stage, I increased the rear speakers output because the mapping overcompensated for the closeness to our recliners of the rear speakers and pushed bass to max because without a subwoofer everything sounds a bit hollow so pushing bass to max helped enrich the sound and add a bit of body and warmth to it. Since the app is fairly new, refinements and enhancements will roll out over time. I am hoping one is an equilizer so I can really dial in my preferred sound stage past the basic few settings for rear and bass settings. Individual speaker adjusts would be nice too with a fine degree of control.
I paired the HTA9M2 to our Sony 65" Z9F Bravia that is now about 5 years old but still performs beautifully and has retained its magnificent picture quality. The last software update was from 2021 but it still had 100% support for the HTA9M2. It has an Arc out port and switching from my Sennheiser was as simply as unplugging the existing 2.1 8k HDMI cable from it and into the Sony control box. I also have a Sony 4k Blu-Ray player and an AppleTV 4k 3rd generation connected to my HDMI2 and HDMI4 ports via 8k 2.1 HDMI cables. The Z9F does have a 1/8" audio jack for center channel, but I will not be using it as it was problematic before and as noted the last software update from Sony for the Z9F is dated 2021. If somehow Sony decides to update the firmware on the Z9F, I will retest and report back here.
Performance:
So how does it perform when all is said and done? Let's be honest here. Without a subwoofer, it stood no chance against the Sennheiser setup for booming bass and a deep, rich, robust sound stage but that was to be expected. Just as with my Sennheiser without a sub during initial usage, adding a subwoofer is a game changer and I expect the same will be true for the HTA9M2.
What I wasn't expecting was how much I had missed a true surround sound system when watching movies and shows that took advantage of it. I also missed the immersive nature of even listening to music in a 360 degree bubble. The Sennheiser is pretty state of the art and mapped the room to project a 3D'esque sound stage, but nothing can match the real thing.
For music testing, I decided to just use Kitaro's "Caravansary" as it has fantastic highs, mids and punchy lows to give a complete idea of the audio and I must say the HTA9M2 delivered especially compared to my Sennheiser not only in immersion but the highs were just so clear and sweet and the bass it did have had a type of seperation I have not heard on home speakers before. Is it the best I've heard? No, but it is well above average. I would not purchase the HTA9M2 primarily for music, but it can do a good job in addition to everything else it does. I appreciate good sound but I am not a hardcore audiophile so I am sure there is much better out there for music but for myself? I was impressed with the balance of the highs, mids and lows but the lack of a subwoofer is painfully present to add that extra layer of richness and what I like to call electronic baritone that only a subwoofer can deliver.
For program viewing, there is a particular sequence in AppleTV+ Foundation series Season 2, Episode 8 when Sal is trapped in the prison in the ground and she is brought food. The sound of the suppresors along with ambient and insect sounds is very specific, detailed with good separation. The HTA9M2's did an admirable job better than my Sennheiser Soundbar but was still lacking detail that can readily be heard on my Sonos Ace or Apple Airpod Max headphones but that was to be expected as headphones are a different breed but the point was to see what detail the HTA9M2 could produce compared to what is there. Again, I can not emphysize enough the lack of a subwoofer as even with the included bit of bass enhanced via the app, you will never achieve that next level of depth and richness of sound only a subwoofer can bring. One thing I very much like is the app will let you know what type of codec/streaming is being presented to the HTA9M2. When I was watching some basic older TV programs, the app said Dolby 2.0. When I started to stream any newer movies, it switched to Dolby Atmos to let me know what was being played back. Older content, the rear speakers were silent as expected but as soon as something modern played? They came to life in the most delightful way.
Watching a movie like Top Gun Maverick or Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning was a joy with the real surround sound and not projected/simulated. A true and proper surround sound experience is completely on another level versus a soundbar even with the newest room mapping. Did I mention the lack of a subwoofer and that extra layer of richness missing? It is present here too. I can not emphysize how much of a game changer it is with a good subwoofer integrated into your sound system even if you are not a huge bass fan.
The Sennheiser prides itself on center/dialogue playback, but my wife and I both found the Sony HTA9M2 and its simulated center channel to actually provide better and clearer dialogue than the Sennheiser. Many times we found ourselves with the Sennheiser backing up the program 10 seconds so we could hear what was being said but with the Sony we haven't encountered that problem once. The dialogue/center virtual reproduction is excellent.
Networking and conflicts:
I know the previous model had problems existing with other Wifi routers in close proximity. I have two routers with Wifi 6 and 6e going along with numerous devices in use and I have had zero drop outs or issues. In fact, the Sony control box is about 3 feet away from my Wifi 6 router and it has been rock solid.
Overall, a great performer but a subwoofer is really a must to truly realize its potential.

I have to admit I was really excited to get the Bravia Theatre Quad home and set up in my living room. I’ve been using a sound bar for many years and not had the capability to do anything near what this system offers.
Things feel a little intimidating when you open the box but the overall setup process is very simple. You’ll decide whether you are mounting the speakers or using the enclosed stands which only require two screws to attach. Once positioned, you’ll plug each speaker in. This is where i got tripped up during my initial process, as I had to figure out how to route the power to the rear speakers in a way that didn’t run cords all around my living room.
Once you figure that out you will download the Bravia Connect app, connect the control box via HDMI ARC to your TV, and walk through the tuning steps. Everything is done very intuitively using the microphone in your phone, and within a couple of minutes the system is updated and tuned to your space.
The sound is definitely better than expected, likely because each speaker is actively powered drawing its own power source. You have the ability to hook up a wireless subwoofer as well, which should allow for more depth to the sound. The system supports Dolby Atmos which provided a completely different sound dynamic when connected to my Xbox as the source.
Thanks to HDMI ARC functionality you can use your existing tv remote to control the system volume, but also have the flexibility to use the app or the included remote.
I think the system is perfect for anyone who wants surround sound without a lot of complex hardware and is well worth the price!

So I’m a Sony fanatic when it comes to home theater. I have probably had every brand television that’s sold in the US at one point or another. At this point I have 2 lg oled in bedrooms one Samsung OLED and my main tv for my home theater is a Sony a95l which blows the completion out of the water. It’s not even close. To pair with Sonys best OLED at the time I purchased the Sony ht9000 which was the best at the time paired with the the sw5 and wireless rear speakers. At the time I would have never thought it got better. I was completely wrong.this new system is undeniably perfect. I opened the box when it arrived and I was def nervous because the soundbars were always my center channels and this doesn’t have one. Set up was a breeze because I already had a comparable Sony tv it was honestly seamless. I wall mounted the rear speakers which took the most time but still was easy. System comes with stands or wall mounts for the speakers which is great and they are flush against the wall. The no center channel wasn’t an issue at all if you have a comparable Sony tv the newer ones use the tvs speakers as the center channel. The sound is perfect!! Voices are crystal clear background noise is swirling around your head like your there. It is the most immersive system I have ever owned. I honestly can’t say enough about this. Updated a day after I got it to make the center channel from the tv even better than originally put the box! If you have the extra cash and a home theater you can’t do much better than this and I’ve tried most of them!! Sony has done it again!

In the past I have been a sound bar fan. I enjoy the central channel of sound coming my way and never gave a true surround sound experience much though. In a past home I had a projector and utilized a sound bar which I though had superior sound. My mind and thought process has completely changed since setting up this quad set package. When looking at how my first impressions were formed it boils down into several categories: Set-Up process, Look & Feel of speakers, Companion app, and the overall Experience from a sound/emersion standpoint.
-Set up
Opening this box was a pretty neat experience. Each speaker and central is hub is packed into its own compartment which is partitioned into its own section of the box. Within each section all mounting equipment and additional literature is included forming sort of a "kit" for each speaker. It is very easy to see which pieces go with each part. After opening arranging throughout my living room was easy too. The layout of my living room is sort of limiting as to where I could place each speaker but it still was easy to figure out. Once laid out the pairing of the hub and speaker was very self explanatory. Mounting can be done vertically with a bracket or against a wall if desired. If mounting on wall make sure the sheetrock is flush or it could rattle if not properly secured. All of this is walked through in the companion app.
-Look & Feel of speakers
I am on the fence in terms of how these speakers look. I am attuned to a central channel paired with a sub woofer. This is not how these are designed. My speakers are set up as if it were an internet router. This look is a little confusing at first glance, they sort of look out of place...however they are growing on me. The speakers are quite small too which is a value add in my opinion. They pump out major sound for something quite small in size. The color is semi-shiny gray which generally goes well with most common household designs. One small "nice to have" would be to have the power cord being fed from either the bottom of the speaker or the flat side. This would have give the user an easier way to hide the power cord.
-Companion app
The app is ok at best. Pretty straight forward but overall it kicks off the experience in the right way. I was not a fan of being forced to install but after initial set up was completed it was pretty much not needed moving forward unless you are one that constantly tweaks sound quality or redesigns the layout of your tv room.
-Overall Experience
Sound quality of these surround set up has been better than I had expected. As noted above my past experiences have involved sound bars (from a variety manufacturers). The sound that comes out of these tiny quads is quite powerful. The bass is rich and deep and there treble is crisp and snappy. I had initially not liked the design but it quickly grew on my as the small yet mighty size of these speakers have overpowered my first impressions. I can safely say that the sound pumping through is better than alternate approaches. From the input side, being able to use these with an HDMI ARC set up has been quite smooth. I wish there were more inputs though, however, but thats not a deal breaker for me.
All in all I would recommend this set up if you are looking for a speaker package with a high level of emersion, quality sound and a decent app to guide the set up process.

Bravia Theater Quad is only latest flagship home theater system and man this surround system does not disappoint makes me want to watch all previous movies I watched millions of times and continues to enjoy them specially with this new Bravia Theater Quad. Sony decided to drop The HTA9 series and move to a more premium name using their Bravia line up I think it fit perfectly it’s also a name that’s easy to remember, I was never a fan of letters and numbers for a product name sometimes they just not that easy to remember. this new surround system also continues Sonys 360 Spatial Sound Mapping.
Design: right from unboxing which very simple and laid out perfect the Bravia Theater Quad was bigger than what I anticipated, its wrap around with this fabric like covers that I would highly recommend being careful taking out of the box and being aware of your surroundings ok where you placing the speaker before installing, it’s because there’s a chance that something might get hooked and could ruin the fabric. I personally wish it more a solid frame but I could see the appeal with some people. each individual speakers comes with the stand and Sony also provided a wall mount as an optional way of displaying these speakers. the remote is also tiny. for a premium price I was hoping for more a premium feel and look for that remote, it’s very basic and zero backlit with limited functionality. the HUB is also simple and lacking maybe an additional HDMI input, you have two total and one for your extra device like a gaming console to be plug on the back of the hub.
Audio Quality:
now I think this is where this speaker truly shine and wow I was loving, i’m coming from using Sony HT5000 both RS5 rear speakers and the SA-SW5 subwoofer. the Bravia Theater Quad offers 16 total speakers, the amount of bass it produces with this speaker is more than enough of what a small town house I have can handle it’s immersive clear with great audio mix from dolby atmos it does gives my house a more theater like experience. I did pumped up the rear a lot more this just based on my preference i’m not an audiophile expert and just a casual movie loving customer. you can technically position each speaker anywhere you would like in the room each will talk and communicate to each other for calibration. sounds field will be optimized based on your room sizes and where these speakers are located. the one I do need to upgrade is my tv, currently using a 2018 OLED that doesn’t support the current IMAX Enhanced feature the Bravia Theater Quad offer so i’m little sadden about that but dolby atmos is more than enough for me to have a theater like experience at home, Sony said their Voice mode has been I can definitely hear the difference comparing to previous entry. center channel is not an issue at all both front speaker sounds perfect that it truly blends together to create that center effects.
App Experience
This Bravia Theater Quad doesn’t use Sony sound app, you’ll be required to download the Bravia app, it’s a much better design than previous Sony app, and it has a much better UX design/ layout. a night and day difference from using the old app on my previous HT5000. you have all the functionality the tiny remote offers and way more. it’s also not great for older folks who doesn’t want to deal with an app but would like enjoys a great sound system like these. from calibration when adjusting the speakers around, for firmware updates you will need the app. I wish you have more control in the app on how to explain or show what is the current setting is, because there is high possibility that it won’t be a 1 to 1 of what you see in the app. even the app has more options than the remote the Sony still not perfect there is no other option to adjust beyond volume levels and bass level if you happen to their previous subwoofers.
Conclusion
I will say this hands down the best sounds system I ever owned there’s just a bit more that I wish sony would do, I wish they would listen to their customers gives us more options to adjust our sound quality, not even treble or equalizer is available for user, and Sony want you to spend a lot of money for these speakers, they are not cheap. also it was nice that their 2 previous subwoofer has the capability to be added. but you’re telling me I cannot even add more speakers? my two RS rear speakers add on that you can buy are absolutely useless with Sony, it’s a terrible decision they like to stand on. like why? they know Sonos exist and Sony continue to not support its user base by letting previous products to be added to create an even more theater experience. i still recommend this sound system but I hope you’re aware on what Sony is offering for your future, meaning these won’t be coming with you in the future.

Alright most of my adult life I have been chasing the perfect sound system but too lazy to instal a dedicated system with speakers in my ceiling etc so I’ve been hooked on a brand that makes a soundbar that resembles a biblical ship but still felt ATMOS effects were MIA even with ERA300 surrounds. I was so super excited about the theatre quad because reviews online praise this system and honestly it is really really awesome. Here is my thoughts on the quad
Packaging - first system came open box missing parts. Best Buy and Sony were excellent about replacing and made it hassle free
Set up - you must download the app and calibrate prior to use. Make sure you have it built ready to go when you start this process
App - not the best a few settings like height and rear speaker volume but system lacks EQ adjustments and doesn’t sync up with my streaming music platforms except for airplay
Looks - love it hate it.. for me it grew on me but took some time now I love the looks
Sound quality- ok this is what matters most. You can except to hear awesome chimes and swishes with this system more than any other soundbar on the market do to its wider soundstage and Sony 360 special mapping. The sound is clear and crisp and channels are well separated. How they do this I have no idea but this system by far has the best dialog I’ve heard and it doesn’t have a dedicated center channel. Whatever it is it works and it works great. Watching movies with the quad especially ATMOS enabled content is 10/10. If you watch TV or movies and that’s you main media.. RUN and buy this right now!
Music- this is where I feel underwhelmed with the quad. This is also where you realize you need the sub woofer SW3 or SW5 no way around it. The thin profile and speaker cabinet is simply not big enough to provide room filling music like some other systems. If music is your main media, you might consider an alternate. Music 8/10
Overall - I kept the quad in my home theatre and am not looking back. The crisp sounds and agility of the bravia quad are not matched by any other offering in the market. This thing is amazing and the dialog is crystal clear dispite no center channel. You will hear sounds missed on movies you previously watched and honestly I just giggle because it’s that awesome. This really is a great system it’s only downfall is you can only connect one sub and music is kind of stuck on the mids which is great for movies but for music where are my highs and my lows? Spacial media does better but still underwhelming IMO.
Would I buy it again? Heck yes it’s my favorite system avail and its capabilities are not matched by anyone else. Also 16 drivers is a nice upgrade from the HTA9. You will need the sub no matter what though.

I was impressed with how well the setup went. After plugging the receiver and 4 speakers, the entire system was synced together.
I decided to use the stands instead of mounting them on the wall. I may eventually mount them but I wanted to take the time to make sure that it’s going to look better on the wall.
I wasn’t sure why an app download was needed to complete my setup but it did make sense when I started using it. The network setup and sound mapping was easy enough to setup with my iPhone. I did the required update after connecting to my home network. I tried to connect a subwoofer for the heart pounding sound that it promised but my HT-Z9F was not compatible.
The SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 subwoofers are listed as compatible but I was thinking that maybe an update would have my current HT-Z9F subwoofer to sync since it’s only 2 years old but no luck. I sure hope it gets the support update later in the future.
I do think it sounds decent without the subwoofer but I always have a sub and it feels needed for my use.
The Bravia Theater Quad allows me to hear the immersion of sound and it’s better than directional sound from my prior surround sound systems. I can clearly hear voices from what I’m watching or music playing which is a good thing. I can’t seem to rate this surround sound at a perfect score because it’s not complete without the subwoofer. The price tag should include a subwoofer or have a larger list of compatible speakers.
The big issue that I’m having with this Bravia connect app is the connectivity. The app doesn’t connect with the surround sound all the time, it sometimes takes several attempts to connect. It gets annoying when that happens because I’m limited on some of the features that the app offers.
My biggest like is the quality sound from streaming Apple Music from my iPhone. It’s close to perfect sound quality and that’s without any subwoofer. The immersion sound is better when playing music compared to watching tv/movies. I’m hoping Sony adds more subwoofers to support like I mentioned above, so I don’t have to spend money unnecessarily.
The remote I will probably never use because I use HDMI arc whisk allows me to control the volume using the tv remote. The app also allows me to control much more than the remote.
I think as of right now I would recommend the Bravia Theater Quad to others because it’s an improvement over what I was using (HT-Z9F). It is a well built product!

I own two different home theater systems, 5.1 system in the main living area and a 5.2.4 Atmos system in My Home theater area. I’m coming from a little bit of knowledge and enthusiast in this area. I wanted to get an easy home theater set up for my kids playroom and media room connected to a PS five. I found that The Sony Bravia, quad 4 Might be the perfect solution. It’s a smaller lofted room about 11 x 11 with the back open To an office below. The set up was quite easy First connecting the base box and then downloading the app and following the instructions. Assembly is quite easy for the four speakers and the bases. And power plugs. I would recommend assembling that first before running the set up Due to the fact that the set up would time out while it prompted me to assemble the stand stand on the speakers. After that set up, I found it quite easy to run the calibration software from the app which uses your phone as a microphone to Received test signals from each speaker and subsequently it runs its calibration. After running the calibration, The magic began to happen. Without any center speaker it does create a pretty good center image with the two front speakers. The sides surrounds are fairly immersive, and I do think that each atmos speaker that is upward firing does create a decent Atmos affect from the reflected sounds. Most likely has to do with the small room and that’s what I bet this speaker system would best shine. This does appear to be a decent immersive solution if you want simplicity. I don’t think this place is my 5.2.4 home theater set up whatsoever which has dedicated floor speakers, for overhead in ceiling, Atmos speakers and two separate subwoofers. But if space is a constraint and wiring is a big concern this speaker system does a good job probably for most people. I’m only giving it four stars because this system is quite expensive and only comes with the four main speakers in no subwoofer. You have to buy that separate and select either the Sony three or five. This system does a moderately decent job at creating loose sounds but there’s no way you can expect from the system without a subwoofer. Movies, gaming, and music are enjoyable with the system, and if you’re looking for simplicity, space, saving then consider this system and buy the subwoofer separate.

The Sony Bravia Theater Quad has revolutionized my home theater layout and sound. I’ve used many soundbars over the past 15 years on multiple televisions throughout my house, and none of them compare to the Bravia Quad system. Even without the subwoofer, which is sold separately, this system is the full package, presented in a new, innovative way that improves the sound, and overall look of home theater.
The Quad came packaged in a large cardboard box that opens similar to a laptop box. I do think Sony needs to do a little better job securing the contents though, as my box lid was partially open and the speaker stands and leg accessories had moved around in the box. Other than that, everything looked good so I proceeded with unpacking and getting it all set up.
For me, the set up took a little longer than I was expecting. The main reason is because there was no obvious quick setup guide included. There is a link to download the app, but I wasn’t sure if I should set the speakers up first, or the app. So I started with the speaker, but ran into some questions I couldn’t answer, so I continued in the app. From there, I realized that I should have my speakers set up more. And I went back and forth a bit. LOL I also didn’t realize each speaker has a designated position. After finding that out, in the app, I had to move some speakers around, which meant detaching the included legs/stand and attaching them to my tall speaker stands that I used for the rear. Attaching the stands is really easy, with a simple screw on each side to hold it down. Once I got it all set up, I looked back in hindsight and realized that what took me almost an hour should have only taken 20-30 minutes, with better guidance.
I wasn’t exactly sure how I would like the new layout, with four speakers and a receiver, but it actually worked out really well, and I like having the space under the TV clear. My old system consisted of a soundbar, two wireless rear speakers, and a subwoofer, so I’m swapping four outlets for four new ones. If I add the optional Sony subwoofer, I will be using one more outlet than my old setup, but I have an outlet to spare, so that’s okay with me. I didn’t mount the speakers on the wall; instead, I placed one on each table beside the TV. For the rear speakers, I was able to use the same tall stands from my old system. My old rear speakers were large and tended to tip easily. These new rears are sleek and not nearly as top-heavy. I love them.
Speaking of the rear speakers, these are the loudest and most satisfying rear speakers I’ve ever heard from any of my surround sound systems. The Bravia Quad rear speakers are loud and clear, creating a blanket of sound that envelops you as you watch movies and play games.
Overall, the sound from the Sony Bravia Quad is premium quality, bringing your content to the next level. If you are playing content that includes 360 spatial audio, you are in for a real treat; with your eyes closed, it sounds like you are transported to the place you hear. 360 spatial sound mapping allows you to experience sound in an entirely new way. However, as amazing as the spatial sound is, if the content is Dolby, you’ll want to enable the “Dolby Speaker Virtualizer” sound field setting from the sound setting menu in the app.
It’s great that I can change this using the app, but it's also unfortunate that I have to do so for everything I watch. Why can’t the system choose for me based on the content? Perhaps there is an option for that, but if there is, I haven’t found it. It's important because a lot of the Dolby content doesn't sound good with the “360 Spatial Sound Mapping” sound field setting enabled. Sometimes it sounds okay, but usually, if the content is Dolby, the Dolby sound field setting sounds best in my opinion. And Dolby sounds great on this system, as well as the DTS setting.
The speaker “node” design is sleek, modern and innovative. They can blend into your environment and decor, but also stand out as a conversation piece with their unique look and style. I’ve grown to really like them, over the past week, and I hope Sony continues on this route. I love that you can hang these on the wall, sit them on top of a surface or attach them to most speaker stands. One suggestion, for future models, change the plug to a flat or 90 degree plug. I’m always perplexed when high tech and innovative devices use old tech plugins.
The bass produced by this system is great, sufficient by itself unless you are an audiophile or someone who wants to rattle the windows. If that's the case, you’ll want to get the subwoofer, which I have not tried yet. Speaking of rattling, I have noticed a minor rattle in a couple of the speakers when I play music with deep bass at a mid to loud level. This does concern me a bit. Reattaching the stand on my rear speakers solved the problem, but I still hear it slightly from the front two speakers from time to time.
Overall I really LOVE this system and I’m so happy that I got it. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience the next level in sound and design.

First things first, I love this Sony Bravia quad home theater in a box system more than any other home theater I have ever had and that includes soundbars as well. And I have had and tried many over the last 20 years of so. This system is a beast and can and should replace the old wired surround sounds with a separate receiver and speakers imo. Yes this system only has 4 speakers, hence the naming of “Bravia quad”, but let me tell you that this system will make you question how did Sony make a wireless surround sound with only 4 speakers and said speakers are so thin? This system truly sounds amazing. I tested this system with 2 separate viewing experiences and I have 2 different experiences, 1 is perfect and amazing- the other almost perfect and still amazing! Let me explain as this may pertain to you(most likely not tho) first I tested this system on my 65 inch mini led tv that is downstairs in the living room. That experience was perfect and as seemless as one can hope for. You set up the control box, plug in the the provided ultra high speed hdmi into the EARC port on your tv, set up the speaker and run the the Bravia app setting to map your room and you are pretty much done, maybe you have one of Sonys 2 high power subs(SW3 or SW5) you pair that through the app. And you enjoy the full experience that EARC has to offer such as high quality audio and Dolby atmos. Works perfectly and the sound is amazing. Front speaker tho spaced apart about 6-8 feet make it sound as you have a dedicated center channel what they call a phantom channel. Clear and precise vocal clarity with solid mid bass and smooth high range make it like music to your ears. Family and friends that were able to come over and hear the Bravia quad said it sounds like a movie theater, and it really does. Albeit if you have one of the Sony subs. I tested the system before I was able to pair my Sony SW5 and while not nearly as good as with the sub, without is still enjoyable for the most part. No issues with wireless connectivity either incase that is a concern for you. Amazing experience and I love it. Now to the second experience, mine and my wife’s master bedroom “real home theater set up area” where we have a 4K projector paired with a wall mounted 120 inch screen. Set up is fast and easy just like downstairs. Ok, we connect everything and recalibrate the Sony 360 audio mapping. Great. We plug in our ps4 pro directly to the control boxes HDMI IN port, the hen ran the 25 foot hdmi cable to the projector, select hdmi on the app and start watching a newer movie. Then I noticed that the sound was only coming out from the front main speakers and the sub of course. So I went to change the setting on the ps4 pros audio out and I change it to bitstream Dolby. Still had only stereo audio output. Ok I go into the app and change the hdmi setting from enhanced to standard still only stereo. I Google the issue and found nothing solid to help me either fix or confirm my “worst fear” not a huge deal by the way but yea. Unless I am missing something or wrong, the Sony control box doesn’t allow full pass through via the HDMI IN!? So you are either stuck with 2.0 or 2.1 channel set up or you have to use Sony 360 sound field technology, which sounds good but you lose Dolby 5.1, Dolby atmos and you even lose HDR support. To me that’s very disappointing as a fair amount of people have projectors and this system is geared more towards just being an EARC focused system. Again, this most likely won’t pertain to you if you don’t have a projector but I wanted to put it out there. With that out the way I would recommend this if it’s in your price range, if you want the movie theater sound in your house and you don’t want wires running everywhere. So is this system worth the retail price. Maybe. It does not include any subwoofer and you kinda want one for the best experience again it pricey and I know the overall price jumps up significantly. Tho can this make you happier? Absolutely I love watching movies with my wife and kids so to me it’s worth the investment. Give it a shot and see what I mean when I say it will blow you away.

I recently picked up the Sony Quad Theater Surround System, and I have to say, it’s been a great addition to my home theater setup. The sound quality is impressive – the surround sound really pulls you into whatever you’re watching, whether it’s a movie or a game. I do have the sony SW5 subwoofer as well.
Setup was very simple. You just download the app, and everything is very seamless. It connects easily via HDMI eARC, and I can stream music via Bluetooth, which is nice for when I just want to listen to some music. The wireless subwoofer made it easy to place it anywhere in the room without dealing with cables. The system is also sleek and modern, fitting well with my décor.
The voice enhancement feature is a nice touch for movies – it makes dialogue clear even during louder scenes, which is something I’ve struggled with in the past. I’m also very impressed with the 360 spatial sound mapping feature. It really enhances the surround sound experience, making it feel like the audio is coming from all around the room.

Coming from the old HT-A9 I had my reservations about the new design, as well as the claims that it is better than the original. I can say with certainty that this is an absolute update in every way. Some may not like the design, but once set-up you may change your mind.
Sound (movies). Louder, clearer and better atmos placement than the original. 11-12 on the old system, that same level on the new one is much louder at the same level. Atmos placement and soundstage are amazing.
Music: Definitely better 2 channel sound. Clean, loud and spacious.
Looks: Again, you may or may not like the square design but as I said, once set-up the look great. And they also look better wall mounted.
Overall: I think the job Sony did on this system I phenomenal. I will say, I really wish they would include a subwoofer with the system. $2500 is an astronomical amount of money to pay for a system period! But especially without a subwoofer.
Notable competitors: Samsung, Sonos and JBL are 3 options that are worth taking a look at. The Samsung 990D is unbelievably great (includes sub) and for half the price, it’s a no brainer for those that want to save money. Sonos speaks for themselves, phenomenal quality, sound versatility and are comparable in price. JBL, although not as good, sound awesome and also have a competitive price, and also includes a subwoofer.
Hope this helps potential buyer looking for a great home theater in a box.

Coming from the previous HT A9 system in which I constantly had issues with sound drop outs, they have greatly improved. Occassionally i will still get a quick dropout but its only happened a couple of times. The sound quality is absolutely incredible.

We are so pleased to hear that you love the convenience of wireless and that the HT-A9M2 system looks great in your home theater. It's rewarding to know that you are happy with the overall sound quality for movies.
We also understand your comments about the "phantom" center channel. We designed this system to create a wide and immersive soundstage, but we appreciate your honest opinion about the dialogue clarity. Your feedback is valuable, and we will be sure to share it with our product development team.
Thank you again for choosing Sony and for sharing your experience.

The Sony Bravia Theatre Quad is widely regarded as a game-changing product that blurs the line between a soundbar and a traditional home theater system. It's a "soundbar killer" for its superior ability to create an immersive, multi-dimensional sound field. However, its high price and significant lack of bass without a separate subwoofer are major considerations. It's an excellent choice for someone who values a minimalist, wireless setup and is willing to pay a premium for unparalleled spatial audio performance, but for whom a subwoofer purchase is a non-negotiable part of the total cost.

I am very glad that I made the purchase of this system. It is just about as great as I was told it would be.
I was hoping that I could use my Sony A90J 83' with this system, as a center channel. This cannot be the case, as I have learned. However, I was pleased to realize that I don't need it because of the phantom center channel that is created. It is as if the sound is coming directly from television!
I decided that I am keeping the system! It has only enhanced the experience of having my television.

If you want a simple to setup sound system, this is a great choice.
It is on the expensive side but is worth it if you can take advantage of the optimum setup. ie wide separation distance of the speakers and space behind the couch to place all the speakers approx at the same height
Movies sounds are great, but if you are buying this for mostly music it won't be a good value
you do need an extra BASS setup though and there are only 2 choices available

I know the title of the review is weird but this system sounds so good with a Bravia 9 tv and the center channel sync that it has me considering and returning for a full ES receiver and speakers. My knit issue is space which is why I bought this in the first place. It has rekindled my love for home theater sound. It produces jaw dropping sound for the size of the speakers and is a huge upgrade from my Sony HT-7000 atmos sound bar. It is a little on the expensive side and only has 1 hdmi input but other than that you won’t do better with small wireless speakers.
