I use them both for recording phone conversations, as well as lectures and sometimes live music. This one is significant because it is a) stereo and b) has a built-in USB connector. I once bought a Sony voice recorder that, unbeknownst to me, didn't have a USB connection at all, even for an external cord, so I was completely unable to transfer the audio files! Beware! Also mono Sony recorders only play back through a single external speaker, not both. The USB connector on this model is both convenient and not, because you have to stick the connector into your computer, rather than using a cord, which makes it difficult to monitor the recorder at the time. On the other hand, you don't need an external cord. The audio quality is very good and also records live music pretty well. One drawback is that it has almost too many bells and whistles for my taste, which makes it a bit confusing to navigate at times and locate the audio files on the recorder.
