After the day of releasing of Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G, I watched and read many reviews of it, and decided to preorder a copy of the lens. It came much later than I thought it would have. When it was delivers, I immediately mount it on my A7C. I never regret to order it. I feel like this is a new one lens do it all. This lens comes in a relatively a compact, lightweight, and versatile range zoom lens. Pairs it with Sony A7C, they are like a match from heaven for traveling photography. They are perfect for vlogging, content creators for video, and at the same time they can offer landscape, cityscape, street photography, and portrait at large end. It produces sharpness image that fit the imagination of any photographer. The extra 4mm at the wide range is going to be the big deal of this lens. The extra 4mm wide range of this lens allow better way to vlogging where you could straggle with the traditional 24-70mm. More significantly, this lens is able to focus 60% faster than the FE 24-70mm F4 and provides precise track fast-moving subjects, and the linear motors provides quiet autofocus that can be its advantage. The price is reasonable comparing to its older brother Sony FE24-105mmF/4 G OSS. The negative of this lens is F/4. It can be an issue for most people when facing low light situation, but you can use a flash light for such situation. You can pair it with a Sony FE 20mm F/1.8 G or Sony FE35mm F/1.8. They can be great companion when you needed for low light. Bottom line, this is a one-lens solution for Hybrid Shooter that gives great range for both still and video subjects on any given day. When it is mounting on A7c body they can become a perfect combination for traveling kit.

small form factor and relatively light for such a broad wide to short tele range. Maximum constant aperture of f4 is just a perfect compromise for speed versus size and weight making it a great travel companion (with the Sony A7C) without compromising performance. Colors are punchy and it's VERY SHARP!

I've been running the new Sony 20-70mm F4 G lens thru the paces and I have to say, this is a real winner! Let me start by saying I have been into photography for many years. Back to the film days even ;-) I've shoot with just about every system out there. For the past several years I've been shooting with Sony full-frame bodies and I couldn't be happier. Although I usually use prime lenses mostly from the G-Master line, I think it's important to keep a standard zoom on hand. Lets face, sometimes you just don't want to carry a bag full of primes around. I've tried a handful of lenses I would considered standard zooms for Sony and although they were okay, none really wowed me. Until now. The 20-70mm strikes a great balance of weight, size, build quality and image quality. As a G series lens, you can bet it's well made. It feels great in the hand yet weighs less than you might expect. I'm thankful for the proper aperture ring (I'm old school :-) ) and the switches to lock the ring or de-click the ring are a nice touch. The zoom and focus rings feel and work great. The big selling point of this lens over others in this category is the zoom range. Other lenses usually start at 24m or 28mm. Now going all the way out to 20mm might not sound like a big deal, but trust me it is. Now making a lens that goes from 20-70mm is one thing, making it perform well is another. Sharpness at 20mm is outstanding. Even wide open at F4 the images are sharp. And like most lenses things only get better as you stop down to F5.6 or F8. Many zooms suffer from being great at one end yet soft at the other. Not this time. I have found the 70mm end to be just as good. Another big plus is that even though this isn't a true macro lens, it's macro capabilities are very good particularly at the 70mm end. This all helps take it a step farther as a great "all around" lens. I wouldn't hesitate to use this for anything. Also, I should mention that the AF is blazing fast, silent and accurate. I was a little surprised the lens doesn't have image stabilization built in. But, almost all Sony full-frame bodies have stabilization built in so it's not a deal breaker. If you are looking for an upgrade from the kit zoom that you might have gotten with your camera, this is a great option.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about the SEL2070G lens. We are glad to hear that you are satisfied with the lens and it has met your expectations. It's like finding a gem getting a lens striking a perfect balance between weight, size, build quality, and image quality. The lens' sharpness at 20mm and performing just as well at 70mm is outstanding. The fact that it also offers impressive macro capabilities, particularly at 70mm really make this an all-around lens. We are happy that you appreciate the inclusion of an aperture ring with locking and de-clicking switches, and the lens having a blazing fast, silent and accurate autofocus.

As a very amature photographer, I have been using this F4 20-70MM lens for about a week on and off and I have to say this lens stayed on for all of the time I used it this past Memorial Day weekend. The lens comes in it's standard flare and comes in a pouch and hood along with the normal literature. Nothing too special there. But when you handle it, the quality is pretty much bar none. You can feel the quality as well as see it in person. When I first installed the lens to test, I have to admit I was a little skeptical in how well this would work. I am no pro, but the images I grab are really well done to begin with. This little added weight and look, honestly, I wasn't too sure off off the bat. Indoors, the images I took were ok. The light balance in auto mode and auto focus was as fast as the combo kit lens. Where this F4 lens shined for me was when I was outside in the daylight. Early morning was the prime time and you can get every detail in rich color in your shots really easily. Normally I have to play around focus points and such and take a few images to make sure I get the shot I want. With this lens, man, every shot was deep in the details. Of course depending on what you are focusing on and framing. The landscape shots were amazing. I took a few short portraits of people as well inside and with ample light, it's just as good as the more expensive lenses out there. You do not have auto stablization in this lens, but that is fine, I rather give that up and lighten my load in carry. Anyway, the camera can more than make up for it.

Synopsis: Want a flexible ‘standard’ zoom lens for a full frame Sony E-mount? Buy this stellar performer and forget Sony’s kit lens. This new lens has been optimized for vloggers, You Tubers, travelers, portrait photographers, pro-amateur photographers, and anyone else that wants a flexible 20-70 mm zoom lens, with a great build quality, and most of the advanced features of the top-of-the-line G master series without the price of a G Master. Pros: -20 mm Ultra-wide angle. Similar zooms start in the 28- or 24-mm range, that extra 4 mm lower is quite impressive and represents a larger picture view. Vloggers and Travelers will really appreciate that. -Great corner to corner image sharpness over the whole 20-70 range. -Constant F4 aperture makes zooming/shutter speed more predictable. -FAST and accurate auto focus. -Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch. -Solid build quality -Compact and Lightweight for the image quality -Good near macro (10”) focusing. -Excellent bokeh with 9-blade aperture. -Excellent sun starburst with small aperture. -Good low light performance -On camera aperture ring, a particular favorite of mine, commonly not seen on anything less than a G Master. As a travel photographer, setting aperture is what I think about the most, so I love this feature. -It’s Sony. Must be said, but Sony Lenses tend to focus faster and better with Sony cameras than third-party lenses which can be cost-appealing. Cons: -No in lens image stabilization. Not a deal breaker, Sony cameras do well with their own stabilization and the lens is easily handheld (relatively light). -F4. Okay, not going to lie, sometimes I crave more blurred background, bokeh, that only a F2.8 or better yet a prime lens F1.4 can give me. But I was surprised at how well this did. And I have noticed most of my favorite landscape photographers use f4 or higher. Long Winded Evaluation: Life isn’t always fair, and Gear DOES matter. You’ve spent at least $2000, in some cases much more, on a good Sony full frame camera with a ‘kit’ interchangeable lens. You’ve watched all the tutorial videos. You’ve been told gear doesn’t matter, it’s about subject, composition, and lighting, and you learn to get it mostly right and… your pictures are good. Not great. Better than your cell phone, but not as much as you would hope for. What’s going on? Gear matters. It is your kit lens holding you back. Laws of physics are laws of physics, and the kit lens just isn’t as optically competent as the more expensive lenses. But that’s okay, Sony has a wide, wide range of choices. Anyone that doubted that Sony offers choice for all levels of photographers and budget, must look at the new (2023) Sony - FE 20-70mm F4 G Full Frame Standard Zoom Lens for E-mount Cameras listing at $1099.99. That’s a mouthful. It joins a family of 50 full frame E-mount lenses (at my last counting). But more critical to this buying decision, there are no less than 5 full frame Sony zoom lenses covering a similar focal length range for a ‘standard’ zoom starting with that $399.99 kit zoom lens (28-70mm F3.5 to 5.6) to this G class lens for $1099.99 (20-70mm F4) and then to the top of the line G Master class, $2,299.99 (24-70 mm F2.8). Bottom line. Cost wise it’s closer to the kit lens, performance and build quality wise, shockingly close to the G Master. I actually own the G Master but was interested in something I could take traveling or mount for vlogging. The question was, would the picture quality suffer to the point it wasn’t worth leaving the G master behind, or would I feel comfortable with F4 G? Short answer is I was shocked how comparable it was to the lens that cost $1200 more. I couldn’t tell the difference in side-by-side pictures taken at the same time, except when I pushed the aperture to below F4 and low light. If I pixel peeped to the extreme sometimes, I could rationalize the G-Master, but I never do this under any actual use conditions. But in a blind taste test for everyday use, I suspect I would not be able to tell the difference. It seems to focus as blindingly fast. It does NOT focus as close though, so if you REALLY want more macro, the G Master wins. When comparing pictures, almost any decent camera can take a good picture for a computer screen, but if you want actual prints, this will support you. I say that, because I am including a few pics for you to review, but they don’t show the full capability of the lens. I took some at low light (sunset) to push the F4 to its limits as well as in a greenhouse during the day, and a day water shot. All shots were handheld, iso 100-200, and I will list the relevant setting details. Note, though I didn’t push the shutter speed low, I noted in some cases it was as slow as 1/50th with no loss of sharpness. Also, in one of the sunset pics at 70mm you will note a small spec in the middle, that was a bird flying through the frame. The camera focuses on it, and I cropped down by 1000%, yes 1000% to do some extreme pixel peeping and was surprised to make out individual feathers. Also, on the day bay shot I cut the aperture to get the ‘starburst’ effect for those that like to see that kind of thing. One last thing, for the savvy budget sharper you might want to compare this to the Tamron standard zoom which is F2.8 and even less expensive. If you can, compare them side by side. I did own the Tamron, it WAS good, but why I sold it was the focus was not as fast (in my hands), and the build quality felt cheaper plus it lacked some on lens features that I like. The Sony quality won me over. So, who is this lens for? The quality driven but budget minded photographer in almost all categories, traveling, portrait, vlogger, but the 70 mm may not be for sports enthusiasts that go more for greater than 200mm. In particular, the lower than normal 20 mm range makes it very appealing to landscape/travel photographers.

This lens has great flexibility and comes through in multiple situations. I am using it on a Sony Alpha 6000 camera, body ILCE-6000. The camera came with a 16-55mm lens and a 55-210mm telephoto lens. This F4 20-70mm lens strikes a good balance between the two. Its range covers a good deal of the other two lens and does it very well. It also comes with a lens hood and carrying case. The F4 lens is thicker than the other two lens, and it fits great in your hands. It is the heaviest of the three lenses. Big, but the extra girth makes it easier to handle. Putting it on the camera is as easy as any other lens. Just put it on and rotate until it clicks into place. The camera recognized it with no issues. The buttons and dials on the lens are easy find and manipulate. Everything feels in place like the other Sony lens. At the same 20mm the F4 has a wider field of view than the 16-50mm lens, and this holds throughout the travel range of the lenses. The F4 is an Ultrawide lens. Against the 55-210mm lens the field of vision is wider for the same settings. The F4 lens does seem pepperier then the others and auto focus is faster. All the pictures came out excellent. Everything was in focus, there were no flaws in the photos for what I was doing. The dials for focus and zoom operated smoothly. The F-stop ring was easy to operate and let you know with each detent you had moved over to the next setting. If I could only take one lens for pictures/videos, this would be the one lens I would take as it has a good range, wider field of vision and takes great pictures. Less to carry around in the camera bag or just lug with you on the go. Unless I really need to go to 210mm, this lens is good at a variety of shots. Taking it will have you covered for a variety of shots without having to changes lenses. I used it for pictures and video only. Videos also came out GREAT. This one lens can cover a board range of your photo/video needs.

This lens gives me the flexibility to carry less and not have to compromise. I got into photography a few years back and though most of it is for pleasure, occasionally I do some real estate photography for my girlfriend. With 20 mm I get the wide angle to capture more detail for inside photos. This lens is a perfect match for my A7c as it’s just the right size for travel. It gives me just enough zoom when I need it, and if I feel like I want more I’ll pair it with my a6400. Using it with my a6400 allows me to reach out to 105mm, which gets me close enough to the 135mm of the kit lens of the a6400, but with a lens that will produce sharper results. Doing this allows me to carry just one lens with the two camera bodies. The lens feels very robust and well made, exactly what I expect from Sony and why they’re my main camera brand. I love the AF/MF button on the body along with the iris lock out ring that allows you to quickly set the aperture or lock it out. Like other Sony lenses I’ve used you hear no noise when the lens is focusing. I’ve got lenses from other brands and though they’re great lenses, you can hear the motors on some when focusing. The 20mm-70mm is now my go to lens when I want to travel light, but still be able to get the shot from a distance.

My previous favorite Sony full frame lens was the 24-105 F4 but this new 20-70 F4 is my new go-to lens. The range on the 24-105 is quite versatile but there are two complaints I have about it: it wasn’t wide enough for vlog-style shots and the minimum focus distance was lengthy (0.38 meters/1.25 feet). The 20mm on this 20-70mm makes it much more usable for vlog-style shots and allows much more of the background to get into the frame. It also allows for expansive cityscape and landscape shots and more creative shots at low angles. One feature of this 20-70mm that may not be as well-known is the minimum focus distance where you can be as close as .25 meters or 0.82 feet from your subject allowing to get near macro-level detail. Compared to the 105mm at 1.25 feet vs the 70mm at 0.82 feet, you’re able to get much more detail. Another great thing about this lens is its size where it’s quite compact and lightweight considering its range and speed. Pairing this with the new ZV-E1 is a killer combo where you get all the full-frame goodness along with a versatile lens. I wouldn’t get too caught up that this is “only” an F4. The super fast G-Master lenses are great lenses but I’ve found that with enough separation of your subject with the background, F4 is plenty fast enough and you can still get plenty of bokeh. For the controls, the focus ring is nice and smooth, the aperture ring has both click and de-click modes in the scenario where you need to ensure you’re not shifting your aperture, and it also has two customizable buttons. I literally don’t have any complaints about this lens - its the lens I’ve been waiting for!

      Hi gwtbike,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about the SEL2070G lens. We are glad to hear that you have found a new favorite lens in the SEL2070G lens. We are happy that you appreciate the versatility of the lens having wider focal length that allows vlog-style shots and expansive cityscape and landscape photography. The shorter minimum focus distance appears to be an advantage since it allowed you to capture more detailed close-up shots. The lens controls such as the smooth focus ring, aperture ring with click and de=click modes, and customizable buttons are definitely a plus for this lens. Add to it its compact built and being lightweight, this lens would easily fall on anyone's favorite lens list.

Perfect everyday walk around lens for me. The ranges is good, the extra focal lenght on the wide makes this a terrific lens for my use. In the past I'd used a 24-105, but find I do not miss the longer end. This lens is a fantastic combination of focal length and aperture, the f/4 is plenty fast for the A7iv and the depth of field is also sufficient. I tend to shoot mostly street and landscape/nature, so I generally do not need an f/2.8 aperture for most of my shots. I also do not shoot unltra wide, so I find 20mm is plenty for me. When paired with the 70-200/4 G, that kits makes a good two lens travel solution without the wieght and bulk of the faster zooms. This is certainly a five star lens for me.

Recent purchase for use on Sony A7RIII. Very useful zoom range. Excellent sharpness across this range. Solid construction, feels like gear made for a pro. Given IBIS, a lower weight, cost and size, an F4 aperture is better alternative than F2.8 lens for this senior citizen. Totally satisfied with this purchase.

This lens is very sharp. F4 in even dim light is good enough to take pictures that wont be blurred. This lens destroys my 16-35 f4 pz. I no longer have a need for that lens amd i have it up for sale. I dont mind that im losing 4mm on the wide end. This is a perfect travel lens. I highly recommend.

    Perfect Vlogging Lense

Perfect everyday vlogging/travel lense. I use this on the A7IV and it allows me to record myself with ease and also have the zoom to capture the things around me when traveling. The low light capabilities of the A7IV makes this thing useable even in the darkest conditioners and have video even better than the eye can see with minimal noise and a memory to enjoy for years to come.

The one lens that does it all (for me). I’ve filmed around 50 YouTube videos on it some getting upwards of 500 000 views. F4 pairs extremely well with Sony’s full frame low light performance making this a perfect choice over gmaster 2.8 at half the cost! Nearly flawless autofocus

I really like this lens, much more than i had originally anticipated. The 20mm end is very wide and able to get a lot. I brought this lens on a recent trip to India, and I have no regrets. I was able to get some gorgeous images with this lens.
