Customer Ratings & Reviews

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Review Performance The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 offers good image quality with sharp centers and nice bokeh at f/1.8. Autofocus is reliable but can be slow and noisy, especially in low light. Build Quality Lightweight and primarily plastic, the lens is easy to carry but feels less robust compared to more expensive options. It does feature a durable metal mount. Value Highly affordable, making it an excellent entry-level prime lens for Sony full-frame users. Pros: Affordable Lightweight Good bokeh Sharp center Cons: Plastic build Slow, noisy autofocus Soft edges at wide apertures Conclusion A great budget-friendly lens with good performance, ideal for beginners and those looking for an affordable fast prime lens.

Even though this is not a G-series lens...it is surprisingly effective. Super light and compact, and the picture quality is way beyond what I expected for such an inexpensive lens. Would highly recommend it, especially for someone just starting out and looking for a really practical prime lens that can be used in various settings.

The Sony 50mm f/1.8 is a great budget-friendly prime lens that pairs nicely with my Sony A7C II, offering sharp images, beautiful background blur, and a lightweight design that complements the camera's compact body. While the autofocus is a bit slow and can hunt in low light, especially for video, it performs well enough for portraits and general photography, especially with the A7C II’s excellent eye-AF. It’s not the most premium-feeling lens, but for the price, it delivers impressive image quality and is a solid choice for beginners or anyone looking for an affordable prime.

Good lense for the price. I use this lense for my kids portraits and my barber pictures. It does everything i need it to do. I read some reviews talking about how slow it is in autofocus and the picture quality and my reply is u get wat u pay for. Its one of the cheapest lenses sony makes. Nonetheless a great lense for the price i have absolutely no issue with this lense at all. I paired it w/ a sony a7riv simply to jus have something to shoot with upon purchase until i can get another lense because I completely switched from canon and im starting from scratch. This lense on 50 full frame is waaay wider than on my canon crop sensor so it took some getting used to but it literally was jus an adjustment. Good buy

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 prime lens is an excellent addition to my Sony E-mount camera kit. Its f/1.8 aperture provides beautiful bokeh and excels in low-light conditions, making it perfect for portraits and street photography. The lens is lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around for everyday use. Image quality is sharp with great color reproduction, and the autofocus is quick and accurate. For its price, this lens offers outstanding performance and versatility. If you're looking for an affordable yet high-quality prime lens, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is a fantastic choice.

Its lightweight and compact design make it a perfect companion for on-the-go shooting. Whether you're into portraits, street photography, or low-light scenes, this lens excels. It's versatile, fast, and delivers professional-quality results at an affordable price point. If you're looking to take your photography to the next level, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 is a must-have addition to your gear.

Fantastic lens and the price is great! Used it in music video i shot for a client. It looks great!! Also took some pictureson my way into lake Tahoe and they turned out great

Amateur photographer using the Sony A7 IV camera. I read great regarding the Sony 50mm. It’s small and lightweight, but produce beautiful quality images.

Ignore the people saying this lens is junk. For a 50mm prime 1.8 that can be had for under $200 there is nothing else that comes close. Paired with my A7iii I'm almost always happy with the result. The af is slow and a little noisy but it never misses. Well worth the $170 paid on sale.

What can I say? It’s a nifty fifty. The picture quality is great for how cheap it is. It’s also super compact so it’s great for travel or street photography. It’s a fixed 50mm focal length so you will have to move around to get the composition you want, but that in the end makes you a better photographer I believe.

I took a year tour to South Korea and let me tell you that this has been my go to lense for a majority of my time. I work with the Sony A6000 and although the photos will be cropped, that didn't stop me from getting what I wanted. After working with a the two standard lenses, having this in my case was a godsend and had me appreciate photography so much more.

Great and low light and images can be sharp, zoom does take a bit sometimes.

I actually really like this lens for the price. It's a great beginner prime. Images are reasonably sharp and bokeh is good. I shoot on a Sony A6400 so there is a 1.5x crop from my APSC sensor but Images are still outstanding with this lens. However, focusing can be slow to find the subject. Another reason for the 4 stars is the lens has some green or purple color fringing in images. This isn't much of an issue because I can remove most in post. I still highly recommend this lens for beginners.

As other reviews point out, the autofocus speed (slow) and noise (loud) cannot be understated. If these things don't matter to you and you are looking for that nifty-fifty lens on a budget, don't hesitate. I bought this just to have the 50mm option in my kit, knowing I'll eventually upgrade. It's a great lens to use for starting out at this focal length.

Despite its price point and the videos online you watch about this lens, the YouTubers who spend about $2k on a lens think this one at $249 isn’t worth it. Well, in my experience it easily competes against and even outshines the Nikon 50mm prime lens in quality of image and accuracy of the image as well. Color reproduction is very nice and sharpness is amazing. Especially in video. The auto focus of the lens is snappy and it holds the subject while they are in frame. All in all, yes I know 50mm is very common/standard but it is one of my favorite lenses now. Don’t go by what you hear. This lens is worth every penny.

Great choice for a beginner photographer, takes amazing pictures, pretty easy to learn with also! I’ve used it every day since I bought it! I mostly take pictures of high action things (BMX,MOTO SPORTS)

amazing glass amazing quality couldn’t recommend sony items more.

Don’t let the price fool you–this is an awesome lens! I use it for both video and photography, and it performs exceptionally well for both. It delivers sharp images, fast and reliable autofocus, and is great in low-light conditions. Highly recommend for any photographer/videographer who wants a prime lens but doesn’t want to break the bank.

The quality is great for the price. I have already seen a huge improvement in my photography. Especially in lower light settings that my kit lens really struggled with!

Best lens for quality photo. It’s so clear and actually perfect for portrait photography. I think the quality is better than a zoom lens. It softens skin too.
