I bought this to replace a Google Home in my bedroom. We didn't have a clock in there and I decided to regift my Google home in that room. I love the clock on the front of this, but the audio quality was a surprising upgrade over the Google Home!

The Sony Smart Speaker with Google Voice Assistant is overall a good speaker with nice sound and a clock which is a huge plus. Setup is done in a snap, once you plug it in and load the Google Home app up on your phone or tablet (Android or iOS) and follow the steps to set it up. Once setup the speaker is easy to use to get the latest information, news, reminders, internet searches, music and lots more. It is also easy to connect it to other connected devices (smart lights like the Hue, smart devices like robot vacs, etc.). In terms of the speaker itself, it sounds good with nice full sound with deep bass. The microphone was sensitive enough to work with you standing across the room speaking to it. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because the touch part at the top of the speaker did not consistently recognize me touching it (in fact it's so hit and miss it makes it hard to use so it's a good thing it can be controlled by voice). The instructions say that there's a very specific area the touch works for certain gestures. Unfortunately it's not marked on the speaker so unless you see it in the quick setup guide it'll probably frustrate you as it did me. Once you find the sweet spot you can get it to work but it's definitely not perfect. It might just be my unit that's finicky in how not so sensitive it is but it's something to be aware of!. Muting the speaker is easy with a button on the back and bottom and the clock can be dimmed or turned off with a button on the bottom. (Note that you can't dim or turn the clock off with your voice. The clock does set itself once you turn it on and set up the speaker. In all, I'd recommend this speaker for it's sound and having a clock so you could replace your alarm clock but outside of that I wasn't thrilled with the touch controls. Note the difficulty as mentioned with the touch control and look at the included guide to see exactly how the gestures work!! Outside of that it's nice and seems built well. Pros: Nice sound Deep bass Easy setup Microphones work well Works with iOS and Android Awesome control of other smart devices Integrates with Chromecast so you can control content playing with your voice Clock Cons: Touch controls didn't work well and are finicky with specifically where to touch on top of the speaker Not so easy to mute/unmute microphone array

The Google Assistant functionality works as expected and it sounds good. Not as good as say the Google Home Max, but what can you expect for something that is smaller.

Google partnering with Sony ... what a match! Fantastic audio quality and the touch free control and LED clock on the front is brilliant. So simple to setup too. If you are in the market for a primary voice assistant device that has great sound, you MUST get this speaker.

Crazy how pretty much none of the smart home assistant devices have clocks. This Sony does and it has a nice modern aesthetic. Sounds good too!

The best of both worlds. Google expertise and Sony quality in an attractive package. The sound is great, setup was a no-brainer and this works perfectly as my bedside clock-radio-info center. Better than Alexa by a LONG way.

This doesn't have the full features of a first party Google speaker, but for music playback it isn't that bad and the clock is an alright feature. I got this on sale for 25% of its msrp so i feel at that price point it is a decent product, but at full price I don't think I could recommend this over a first party smart speaker from any of the three major players.

The hand signals are hard to use but you don't NEED them since you can talk to the speaker and tell it what to do. The Google Assistant is pretty sensitive as it sometimes accidentally starts answering questions when we aren't even talking to it -even from another room. The music sound quality is better than I expected too. ♬♩♪♩ヽ༼。> ل͜ <。༽ノ♬♩♪♩

    Sony Support Failed Me

Bought this for my mother after Sony support assured me that the voice command worked with Portuguese (I have email messages to prove it). My mom does not speak good english so the Portuguese support was key. After buying it and taking it abroad, I realized when configuring it that it does not support Portuguese. I contacted the same Sony support, but now they do not admit the mistake and will not assist me. Disappointing, Sony! Very disappointing.

Intro This Sony smart speaker has it all. Good sound, gesture controls, clock and yes, it has Google Assistant. It can control your smart home devices. It connects wirelessly through bluetooth, wifi or NFC. It looks good enough to be part of a contemporary decor. Oh and it’s splash proof (IPX3-rated) so you can have it with you near the sink. How does it sound? In comparison to the Bose Soundlink Revolve, it falls short. It does not have a full, rich sound. I found it to have a flat equalized sound. Bass quality is good but you won’t get the deep bass that Sony headphones have been known for. For the most part though, for what this speaker is meant to be, an assistant, it holds its own. Like the Bose, It has a 360-degree sound designed to disperse the same sound to anywhere in the room. It’s definitely loud enough to fill a good size room with sound. Maybe even good enough for a small living room party. Google Assistant. You can have it tell you your commute time, if it’s going to rain or even give you recipes. Siri and Alexa can do this just as well. Like Alexa though, you can have a continuing conversation with Google Assistant. For instance; If you ask “What’s the weather?” It will give you the current weather information. You can then ask “How about tomorrow?” and it will give tomorrow’s weather. Siri, Alexa and Google have their own niche that they are good at. Getting information is where Google shines. For home automation though, I have to go with Alexa first hands down and Siri comes second. The Google Home app wasn’t much help either. I also found that the mic, dual mics if i’m not mistaken, couldn’t hear me nearly as far as the Echo Dot can with its 7 far-field mics. Gesture controls left a lot to be desired. It’s a hit or miss and mostly miss especially with adjusting the volume. You have to spin your finger around a certain spot on top of the speaker and I found it to be too cumbersome to do. I found myself using the voice command instead which was more useful because you can tell it to adjust it to a specific volume level, “set the volume to 69” for instance. I like that it has an LED display that displays the time. Comes in handy at times. What I don’t like about it is that it does not have an auto dim feature. You have to adjust it manually with a button located on the bottom of the speaker. WHY? So, if you’re sensitive to lights when you’re sleeping, it can really be bothersome. If you set it dim when you’re sleeping, it will hard to see when you wake up in the morning. Pros - Google is really good at getting information and it is smart enough to have a continuing conversation - It’s splash proof - Removable and washable speaker grille Cons - No ambient light sensor to auto adjust display - Not a full or rich sounding speaker - Misplaced buttons (dimmer on the bottom of the speaker, bluetooth pairing and mute located on the rear near the bottom) - Messaging (email or text) not available… yet - Gestures needs some work. - Not very good at home automation… yet Outro This Sony smart speaker is useful. I think it would be a great assistant in the kitchen area and that’s where mine will be.
