Lucky I got it on a major sales because I'm a little disappointed that it never gets any updates. Looks and sounds great but can't really use it as a smart speaker because it can't do much compared to my Google smart speaker.

I had high hopes for this device but I was disappointed by the sound quality overall. At low volumes, in a small space, the device's sound was nice but with increase in volume the sound had no depth even with two of these paired. Also, trying to cast to a joined pair of these was absolutely frustrating since the volume levels did not seem to align making the listening experience all the more unpleasant. Additionally, the hands free/gesture control experience was abysmal since the device only registered my input less than 50% of the time. I returned all four of the devices that I purchased and I went with a non-smart portable bluetooth device instead.

Seamlessly blended in with my entertainment center decor much better than the standard Google Home which is still only available in white. Speaker is also a bit stronger. Somewhat disappointing that phone call ability has not as yet been enabled, but will hopefully be added in the future.

I had high expectations for this speaker but the lack of updating has let me down. I own two of them and they just haven’t kept up with our google homes or minis. I really enjoy the clock display which can be seen easily bedside.

The Sony-S50G is the perfect assistant in my home office. I can create appointments, update my calendar, reach contacts and so much more just by using my voice. Setup was extremely simple. I have a google account registered on my mobile device, so it only took 3 minutes to download the Google Home app and synchronize with the Sony-S50G. You can elect what data you share with google (location, contacts, etc.). The design is really sleek. It goes perfectly with my office setup. The clock is a really nice feature for quick updates on the time. I love the quality of the audio while streaming music. It's also really nice that I can make requests while playing music. For example, if music is playing and a call comes in, I can simply say "Hey Google, pause" and the music stops so I can answer the phone. The Google assistant is really intuitive. I can use common phrases and expressions to navigate menus and ask questions. The voice recognition is superb. The integration with smart devices is amazing. I can control my thermostat right from my desk with a simple command. I highly recommend this product.

Use Bluetooth to feed it music from my tablet. Only criticism is that it lacks a way to connect to a music player other than Bluetooth. Could use a 3.5mm aux jack for connecting non-Bluetooth audio devices. Time display brightness can be adjusted. Got it on sale at very reasonable price.

The Sony Google Assistant speaker is an extremely stylish speaker with great sound and great features. My speaker was a white fabric cylinder with a shiny chrome base. The chrome picks up fingerprints easily, but it is a great aesthetic touch nonetheless. The front of the speaker displays time time with some extremely bright blue/white LEDs. The LEDs are VERY bright, so be warned if you're planning on using this in your bedroom as an alarm clock / speaker as the light may keep you up at night. Google Assistant works great. I was able to play and pause video on my Chromecast, I had it set my alarm, got my news updates, and got my weather report. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to play nice with my Google Home. I'd hoped that I could set an alarm in the bedroom and turn it off from the Google Home in the kitchen. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work. While the speakers seem to control the same devices and pull data from the same sources, I could not get them to interact with each other in any way. I'm not sure if this is because they are manufactured by two different companies or if this is something that will be remedied with a future software update. The touch free controls are a little buggy, and I'm subtracting a star from my review because of that. Waving your hand in a circular motion is supposed to allow you to turn the volume up and down, and waving your arm side to side is supposed skip forward and back on tracks. Unfortunately, every gesture registered as an arm wave to skip tracks. The only time I was able to get around this was when I lightly put my finger on top of the speaker and traced a circle (being sure to hit the two sensors on top). Even then, it only adjusted the volume 2/3 of the time. I found it much easier to simply tell the speaker to turn the volume up or down by a percentage. All in all, I'm very pleased with this speaker.

For the price, this speaker isn't worth it. I found that while it was loud enough, the sound itself wasn't good. It's clear and the bass is decent but there are a lot of higher frequencies that didn't seem to be coming through. It also doesn't pair well with a local apple music library, but this is true of most smart speakers unfortunately. This hindered a lot of what I wanted to use it for. With the speakers being just okay, and not being totally compatible with my phone, I couldn't justify the purchase.

Bought it for a deal - 75% off, when the Google Home Mini wasn't a thing yet. Totally worth it, given that it was cheaper than the cheapest than Google Home Mini. Still enjoying it.

Adjusting the volume is a little more cumbersome than it should be. Google is a little bit harder hearing than the Alexa. I use it manly for listening to music on my front porch.

Google Home features with better sound

Sony is clearly taking their design inspiration (for Google Home products) from Google. Which in my opinion is a good thing, I like the modern aesthetic with muted gray. I personally like the Sony speaker better than Google Home because of the complete coverage of the speaker with fabric, rather than the bottom third of the Google Home. The Sony speaker is a bit taller and also has more heft. I can't describe it, it just feels more premium (that's not to say the Google Home feels cheap or anything, just personal preference). I have both Google Home and this Sony speaker, I keep the Google Home in the kitchen and the Sony one in my bedroom. Reason being, I liked the clock in the Sony speaker and wanted it on my night stand. Well, that was a mistake. In the middle of the night, those tiny little digits practically illuminate half of my bedroom. I can't figure out if you can turn down the brightness. For now, I've turned it away from my bed (eliminating it's usefulness) and while it's still bright, it doesn't bother me as much. In terms of setup, it's identical to Google Home. If you've already installed the Google Home app and used it before, adding the Sony speaker could not be easier. You literally plug it in, and bam, it's in the app and it's essentially set up (you tap a few OK buttons). If it's your first go with Google Home App, it's still simple, you just need to download the app and go through some simple tutorials. The sound is better than the Google Home, but only marginally. You won't notice it when Google Home is talking, or probably even with a podcast playing. But when you're listening to music, it does sound better, as it has richer bass and higher highs. It seems more clear. But again, the difference is negligible. It claims to have 360 degree sound, but that seems like a marketing gimmick. I didn't put it in the middle of the room and walk around it to test it out. I mean, generally it will be near a wall where an outlet is. Speaking of outlet, the AC plug is HUGE! It requires the bottom plug in your outlet. Not only is it long, but it extends out from your wall pretty far. So keep that in mind, doesn't sound like a big deal until you're trying to plug it in so it's in the perfect spot in your home. In terms of Google Home features, there really isn't much to say. The microphone is extremely responsive, I found no difference in response time or understanding my voice than the Google Home. It works as advertised. The one big knock are the physical buttons. So, on the Google Home, you can touch the top and spin your finger in a circle to turn the volume up or down. I don't do it much, but it's convenient when you're in your room laying in bed. Sometimes I've been listening to music, so the volume is up, and when I set my alarm through Google Home, I don't want the alarm to be as loud as the music, so I want to turn the volume down (when no music is playing) when I get into bed. I also don't want to wake my wife up by saying "Hey Google" and risk Google waking her up. So I want to turn the volume down manually. The touch controls on the Sony speaker quite frankly suck. It responds to touch maybe half of the time. Google Home is 100% of the time. The Sony speaker has no touch gesture controls, but that is no good either. You're supposed to wave your hands in specific directions but that's too dicey. I just want to turn volume up and down, that's it. Other than the small issues of bright clock digits and nonresponsive volume controls, this is a great sounding Google Home Speaker. I can live with my little complaints and would take this one over the Google model for the better sound quality (even if it is negligible, the Sony speaker gets louder).
