Caught this on sale for 39.99 which is awesome. Great what speaker. Only issue is it doesn't auto connect to Bluetooth when in range and it's a process to get it to connect.

This is in our Kitchen and gets used daily. Disconnects every now and then but a reboot is quick and painless. My daughter loves walking in and asking it to play music. We have it connected with the rest of our Google Home accessories.

Premium speaker with a lot of tricks up its sleeve

(Disclaimer - I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.) Overview - The Sony Wireless Speaker LFS50G would be a pretty decent product by itself as just a network-connected music player for the kitchen. Add in Google Assistant with all of it's neat tricks, however, and you have a speaker and all the answers you could ever need. Audio quality is very balanced - no overpowering treble, bass you know is there but doesn't drown out everything, and clear vocals. The microphone array is very powerful - it can understand me from across the house. Also, every facet of this product is premium, from the unboxing experience to the way it looks wherever you place it. ---------------------------------------------- Unboxing: You know the experience Apple gives us for unboxing their electronics? Well, Sony copied it perfectly. It's not a complaint, it's a compliment. It's also gives you the feeling of the "BIG REVEAL" as the box it comes in separates out. The product itself: You have the typical Sony build quality - it looks high-end, it feels high-end, it has some heft to it, and the materials used both look and feel great. Plastics are soft and smooth, the ring along the bottom of it feels like actual metal and not plastic, and it's actually using speaker grill cloth and not a hard plastic that looks like speaker cloth. One really cool thing about the speaker cloth is it's also somewhat transparent to light, which allowed Sony to put a LED display onto this speaker to display things like the volume level and the time. Setup couldn't be easier. I used my iPhone 6s, since Google tends to prefer making the experience easier with Android devices. Went through without a single hitch, the device found my network very quickly and connected with ease. Note that this speaker does connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. The sound quality is pretty good, especially for the size of this device. While it's not going to have room-shaking bass, lows are rather punchy. For example, The Weeknd's "The Hills Have Eyes" bass line came through clear, even at full volume. Classical music sounded great through this device as well. Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" also had clear vocals, Mike Portnoy's drum work was punchy, and everything was balanced in terms of overall sound quality. Google Assistant is really the star of the show, however. You can tell it what you want to listen to on Google Play Music, YouTube Red, Spotify, and Pandora, and it queues up your choice nearly instantly. If you have home automation devices, such as light bulbs, switches, thermostats, and more, Google Assistant can control any of that stuff with ease. It pairs very easily as long as you follow the instructions for how to do so. One other feature of this speaker is the ability to MUTE the microphone. Don't want Google Assistant listening? Do you have friends over that fear AI assistants? Hit the mute button and it doesn't listen to you. My only annoyance with this device is, while slightly intuitive, the touch controls are somewhat annoying to learn. While you can use Bluetooth or the Google Home to control the device volume level, you may not always have your phone handy to do so. All in all, the The Sony Wireless Speaker LFS50G is a good product. Lots of features, good sound quality, and the ability to control home automation with your voice are all things that make this a winner.

Sounds great, does need more Bass. The microphone doesn't pick up my voice every time and I'm in a small room. The hand controls don't always recognize your hand passes the first time.

Fun and useful, though still a bit limited

The Sony S50G smart speaker is a fun and useful home assistant, that is still a little limited by the current state of the technology. As devices grow more and more integrated this should be a very "forward" thinking device, that will see it's uses grow and grow. First off it's an attractive speaker. It looks good on a counter or a shelf. The clock display is useful, if a little awkward looking with it's "stacked" design (the two digit hours sit on top of the two digit minutes). Overall it looks good, and personally I find it more attractive than the Google Home's "air freshener" design. The built-in Google Assistant is fun and sort of useful for the moment, with future compatibility and usefulness looking very promising. I was able to set it up very quickly with my smart phone. I already have a google account and calendar, and everything in it seemed to import quickly and easily. Google was able to tell me right away when my next appointment was. It also already knew my work and home address and was able to give me times to each (I use the "how long to get to work" question every morning). Little frustrations pop up from time-to-time. For instance, I haven't been able to get it to make a call yet, but I'm not sure if I need to update something in my device or if it's just not compatible with that functionality yet. Of course the device can't tell me--it just tells me it can't do that (even though the instructions say it can). There's a lot of research that goes into how to effectively use a device like this, so I'm still learning plenty. It controls my Honeywell thermostat, which is neat. It seems there's lots of other devices it will control as well, and there are many more 'smart' devices planned that make the future of this device bright. The "hand gesture" controls are mediocre at best. I actually have my speaker in a place where this isn't convenient anyway, but I did give them a try. Like those weird "radar" sinks that never come on no matter how frantically I wave my hands in front of them I just couldn't seem to get this to do what it's supposed to. I would wave to turn up the volume and skip a song on my playlist--things like that were pretty common. This technology doesn't seem to be "there" yet. The voice activation is far more convenient, and likely what you'll be using most of the time. The speaker itself sounds fine. I would put it on par with most of the other low-end bluetooth speakers I own. There's not a lot of bass (of course) but the sound is crisp and clear. Voices are very easy to understand when listening to news or sports. I use this device in my office and will have it playing music softly in the background while I'm doing other things, and it's perfect for that. I love that I can get a quick answer to a question while I'm working. I will love being able to make hands-free calls whenever I can figure that out. I'm sure there are tons of uses for it coming up that I'll love as well, I just have to wait for them to get here...then figure out how to use them.

Decent sound quality, but seemed just a touch underpowered. Disappointed that the equalizer was not available in app, whereas Google Home Mini and Google Home, as well as Echo Dot (3rd) gen and Echo have equalizers in app. Too expensive to have this shortcoming.

Slightly better than the Google Home

I have had a regular Google Home since it first came out and I have loved it. When I saw this one come out I figured I would give it a try. Out of the box it has a very cool look and is slightly bigger than the home. I like that it has a front display that shows a clock, although from certain angles it can be very hard to read. It will also display the volume level when you are raising or lowing the volume. There is also a white ring around the top that lights up when you are changing the volume, as well as 4 dots that light up when you say "OK Google" The functionality is the same as all the google assistants that are out on the market, so I wont get too much into that. I found that it was quite responsive when giving the Ok Google command even in a slightly noisy environment. The only thing that this, and all other assistants i have tried, struggles with is hearing the command in a louder environment, or when music is playing from the device. But that is just the nature of the beast, and I dont know if that problem will ever be solved. Next i will talk about the sound quality. Due to the size, I was expecting very rich and full bass...although I was a little disappointed in that respect. The audio quality is good, about on par with the regular Home. While the bass sounds a little fuller than the regular home, its still not a good booming bass sound. I realize it would be hard to achieve this in such a small speaker, but I was still expecting a little more. Overall, the sound quality is very acceptable though and your average user will be very satisfied with it. Lastly, the gesture controls. You are able to wave your hand over the device to play and pause music and skip tracks and also swirl your finger to increase or lower the volume. I found these to work about 80% of the time. They were frustrating at times though when it wasn't recognizing what my hand or finger was doing and it wasn't responding. I found myself just using the controls on my phone instead to raise or lower the volume and skipping tracks. Overall this is a pretty solid device with decent sound quality and a few more bells and whistles than the regular Google Home.

    Sony smart speaker w/Google Assistant

The Sony S50G smart speaker includes the Google Assistant built in. I have the Google Home so there was just a small learning curve with this as you are able to use some hand gestures for volume control, forward & reverse songs and access the Google Assistant without saying “hey Google.” I find myself using verbal commands almost exclusively as I am not normally beside the speaker. The speaker itself is sharp looking, somewhat similar to the Google home but with a chrome ring around the bottom and a built in clock (that fortunately can be dimmed or completely turned off - the default is very bright). Something about the clock confuses me... it shows the same time for am or pm with no differentiation. For example 0824 is the same whether day or night. Not that important as it’s difficult to see unless you’re looking directly at it. This unit connected easily to my wi-fi via the Google home app and with that, it was up and running. This is not rechargeable, but must always be plugged in to work. The best thing about this for me is the fact that it has Bluetooth. I was able to easily pair my iPhone and play my iTunes playlists with the speaker. (The Google home is wi-fi only.) The speaker part of this performs well. I liked the sound very much - rich and full and quite enough for my bedroom where I’ve placed it. It can also play your Pandora or Spotify as well as control your Google smart home devices (thermostat, locks, plugs etc.). It answers simple factual questions and often tells me it’s sorry but it doesn’t know the answer to my questions. They say they are always updating the info to make them smarter but it can be frustrating when you have to re-word your questions several times and hope it can answer. It can always tell me the weather, sports scores, traffic, etc. This is a nice little speaker and it’s from Sony, so it does have very good (mono) sound. I don’t care for the hand gestures, but I’m not forced to use them. Overall, this is a fun and useful unit.

Sony's LFS50G combines room-filling sound, space-saving design, and smart assistant capabilities that transforms the little speaker into the central hub of any room. Google Assistant works flawlessly with this device. Once connected, smart commands were responsive and clear, up to par with my other Google Assistant-enabled devices. The LFS50G integrated with my current smart home setup seamlessly, and I was able to make requests and control smart lighting immediately after connecting to the home Wi-Fi network. The speaker also connects wirelessly to mobile devices via Bluetooth, and I found the range to be sufficient (across three rooms and three floors away, connection was passable). Consumers are advised to utilize Google Play services to not rely on external devices, however the Bluetooth capabilities are a nice touch. The device boasts touch-free controls, but I found them to be cumbersome and spotty. For example, twirling your index finger above the device to simply adjust the volume felt silly, and it was a little annoying while attempting to find the target volume. Concurrently, simply swiping over the device to shuffle through songs worked well, though having to sit near the device to perform the task felt constricting. Visually, the circular design is very pleasing and while it feels a bit voluminous, the size allows for a solid, rich sound. It lacks true portability, however, as it does not have a rechargeable battery and it runs on AC power. The LFS50G represents a nice addition into both the speaker and smart hub world from Sony. This product is a good fit for novice smart device shoppers looking to upgrade older speakers while dipping their toes into the smart market. It's not a perfect device, but it is definitely a nice upgrade for most consumers. Full disclosure, I was provided this product for my honest, unbiased review.

This speaker is a step up from the standard Google Home speaker. For the additional cost you get a great-sounding speaker, gesture controls, water resistance, a clock display and, arguably, a better-looking speaker. I've been using a Google Home in the kitchen for about a year now, so I thought this would be great to swap with it and move the Home to another room. There is one feature this speaker lacks, though, compared to the Google Home and that's the ability to make phone calls. It's possible Sony could add this later, but for now that feature only works on the Home. The sound quality, particularly the bass, isn't as good as my Bose bluetooth speakers but then they don't have the Google Assistant built in. It's also not nearly as expensive, so if you're mainly looking for the Assistant feature I think you'll still be happy with the audio quality. At any rate, it's way better than the standard Google Home speaker. Unlike some portable bluetooth speakers, the Sony doesn't have a built-in battery, so it's designed to stay in one place. But, again, if you don't need the portability that's not an issue. You can Google cast music to the speaker (unlike my Bose) as well as via the standard bluetooth pairing. The gesture controls were a bit tricky to use at first, but got easier with practice. To adjust the volume, you point your finger down at the speaker and circle clockwise or counter clockwise to turn it up or down. Presumably this feature was designed for the kitchen (along with the splash proofing) so you can control it when your hands are messy. You can also use voice commands to set the volume to a given percentage. One minor problem with the gesture controls appeared when my cat started checking out the speaker when I used it the first time. He paused, played, and skipped tracks in the matter of a few seconds. There's a hold button on the bottom of the speaker to disable controls but it only lasts 3 minutes, and it also mutes the microphone so it's not really useful. It'd be nice to be able to disable gestures completely, but I think the cats will get used to the speaker before too long and it won't be a problem any more. Overall, I'm very pleased with the speaker and it's great having the Google Assistant available in other parts of the house.
