I got this camera as an exchange with my Canon. I love this because it has the same camera as the heavy cameras of canon.

My first use was at a friend's wedding. When I shared my shots and video with the family, they commented that much of my results were comparable to the pros. I am particularly impressed with the video capabilities. This camera can be as simple or as complex as your style prefers.

This is my first serious camera. I was looking for months before deciding on the NEX-6. I started out looking at high end fixed lens cameras like the Panasonic Lumix LX7, then micro-four-thirds like the Olympus pm2, then the APS-C size between Sony NEX and small form DSLR Nikon D3200/D5200. For straight up value, the small DSLRs will give you equal or very slightly better picture quality, much lower lens cost across the board, with greater selection. So you'll save $200-$800 once you add some basic lenses - a fixed prime (35mm or 50mm), tele-wide zoom (18mm-200mm), and macro. You'll also save on other accessories like flashes and mics. However, you will add about double the weight and size. Since I put a premium on weight and size, second only to quality, I started looking at the NEX series. There's the 3, 5, 6, and 7. Unless you need wireless, go with the NEX-3 with it's smaller kit lens. It's the best value and won't set you back too much, relatively speaking. Picture quality virtually the same. So it's down to the 5,6, or 7 for me. Over the NEX-5, the NEX-6 adds an excellent view finder, standard hot shoe, much better lcd, more metal build, built in flash, real mode dial, and the excellent smaller kit lens. It only looses touch screen - small sacrifice IMO. These were all very important features that made the NEX-6 a better value overall, and a more versatile camera. NEX-7 gains 50% megapixels, standard mic jack, and an extra dial, but looses wireless, still no touch screen, and costs even more. The gain in megapixels just didn't justify the significant price difference for me. If you need the extra megapixels, you will have no doubt in your mind about it. In fact, probably nothing in this review will be helpful to you if you need the megapixels. If it only cost like $50 more, I'd go for it, but it's much more. In the basic price range of the NEX-6, you have several micro-four-thirds options that will give you almost the same quality, but definitely a notch below any APS-C sensor. However on the plus side, they are even more compact (sacrificing ease of use) and have a greater lens selection. Problem for me was the lenses cost even more, combine that with overall lower quality pictures, and I'mt back to the NEX-6. You can also add almost any brand lens to NEX series via adapters. They are cheap if you go full manual, and open a virtually infinite selection of lenses to you. There are some full automatic adapters, if you really can't find a NEX mount or want to use some of your existing alpha lenses. Only problem I have with the NEX-6 is the on screen menu system. I avoid it as much as possible by customizing the function button and dials. But I still have to dive in once in a while, and it's a pain! When I do a full day of shooting, I setup everything the way I think I'll need. That includes trying to stick to one lens. So for the most part, I don't need to go into the menu. But when you want to have fun with all the special features and tweaks, it takes a lot of patience. Overall, the camera is really a joy to use. For the majority of shooting, the mode dial and fn button keeps me out of the menu system 90% of the time. If you plan on just taking photos for memories, a premium fixed lens camera or the NEX 3 will do just fine. For the enthusiast that doesn't need the compactness, a small DSLR is a better value. If you are an enthusiast that values compactness, versatility, and ease of use like me, the NEX-6 is perfect. PS - I forgot to mention video. Generally everything I've read gives Sony NEX the nod. Full 1080 60p, good sound, and clean recordings. But like any camera vs video cam, you only get 30 minutes per file recording, and awkward form factor. If you're serious about video, probably better to get a video cam that takes snapshots.

I love the pictures it takes, clear and crisp. It takes a little time to learn all the features but inside and outside the pictures turned out great. I took it to the aqarium and the colors of the fish were mesmerizing. I upgraded from a camera I bought and didn't like and I couldn't be happier!!!

I hate carrying a full DSLR camera because of the bulkiness. I had a sony nex-3 which was a few years old. and looking to upgrade, i picked the sony nex-6 and am very happy.
