I love this Android MP3 player. It's like having a smartphone minus the text/call option, which can be mitigated by messaging/social apps. I encountered a bug where Spotify would randomly delete downloaded items, but other than that I love it.

I purchased my Sony A-306 about 1.5 years ago. I've tried to accept the way it works but continue to hate this thing. I come from an Apple iPod classic (last version they made) and accidentally killed it with a magnet mount - man do I miss this device! Here's why I'm giving it 1 star: - It's not a music player, it's essentially a phone with tons of apps and bloatware that I don't want or need. I've gone down the ADBAppControl road and optimized this as much as possible, but it does little to improve most of what I hate. - Battery life is horrible and constantly drains when not in use - even de-bloating, disabling every active service, it never "sleeps" and is dead within a week when not in use. Turning it on and off is painful since it takes a long time to boot, but is the annoying workaround to not using all the time - Bluetooth frequently does not automatically re-connect to known devices, requiring a re-pair on the Sony side. - External SD cards will randomly spit out "unreadable files" on all tracks, requiring a full power down and power up in order for it to be recognized again. Usually happens after It's idle but powered up for a few days. - I get random "check audio levels" pop-up window that has to be acknowledged before any other function can happen from the screen. - The audio output level of the headphone jack is too low when plugging it into a device with 1/8" to RCA inputs, even at max volume. - It's horribly picky about cover art that is embedded in files an most of mine don't show up. - It's hard to operate while driving. The only thing I really like about this device is that the audio quality is good and there are a lot of options to tailor audio settings for the source you are listening to. If I were able to return this I would and am starting to look for a replacement that will not include Sony devices.

[Employee of bestbuy] Certainly confused by the high ratings this gets on Best Buy's reviews. This device has been an absolute headache to get working and stable. Yes, the OS can be sluggish to respond and this non-Japanese version is limited, but that's the least worrying bit. If you try to use any streaming app the experience gets worse -- Spotify and Tidal run into serious issues on this device. With Spotify, there's the issue of the app trying to redownload your offline tracks each time you power on the Walkman (the only fix seems to come from a few Reddit posts -- yes, NOT from Sony's website and NOT from an included manual BUT from Reddit). Tidal fairs even worse, the app can run extremely slow and can crash with no notice -- playing the first track can take 90 seconds to start and skipping tracks often causes the app to fail. Both apps were used with downloaded music for offline play on a speedy Samsung microSD card which in theory should provide a better experience than relying on Wi-Fi streaming, but that was certainly not the case. Even when playing local music through the integrated Walkman app (the intended Sony Walkman experience I guess) the Walkman and app will also hard crash... The battery life compared to other Sony Walkman players is suggested to be considerably better in reviews, but it will absolutely NOT get you anywhere near a full work day's worth of playback -- in my experience it will discharge well within about 4 hours of playback at 50% brightness with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off (any lower brightness and it the screen becomes difficult to see under daylight). In addition to a pretty bad battery life, it also gets notably hot after more than a few minutes of audio playing. Many of these problems can likely be fixed by Sony in future firmware updates and software patches, but until then I cannot recommend this Walkman to anyone looking for a quick way to get set up with a dedicated portable device for music playback. If you do decide to get this, be ready to commit to researching for various fixes from community forums and Reddit posts as well as perhaps factory resetting this a handful of times to get this working right.

Another Sony Walkman in my life. Started with the first one released in 1979. This one is Android and touch screen. The live wallpaper showing the cassette playing with the artist and song, looks awesome. High quality sounds. Music is easy to load up on a memory card and insert into Walkman. Now I don't have to use my Sony Xperia 1 III for music. Also had streaming services.

Fortunately if you want a player devoted to audio only and no distractions, go for this device. Be warned that this device picks up audible noise due to WiFi card. I thought I had purchased a faulty device at first, but after receiving the second one and attempting multiple headphones it was true that they are faulty in that aspect. This means you can’t stream music from apps that require WiFi without noise.

Hi NateQ,
We're truly happy that you like most of the features of your NW-A306 Walkman. We're sorry you've been running into difficulty. Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. Bluetooth audio equipment and wireless LANs (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) use the same frequency band (2.4 GHz). If you use the player near a device equipped with a wireless LAN, radio-wave interference may occur. It may cause a decrease in connection speed, noise, or connection failure. In this case, please follow the guidelines on this helpful link: https://helpguide.sony.net/dmp/1301/v1/en/contents/TP1000733579.html
We also recommended updating the firmware of the audio player for optimum performance. The software update improves the general performance of the unit and includes key features, applications, and bug fixes.

I was very disappointed. The bass was horrible. Even after the update the bass was flat. No depth to the music at all. A lot of apps I would never use. I don’t need a calendar or calculator on my music player. Battery life was only a fraction of stated. Even with the Bluetooth & Wi-Fi off. The volume is limited by design in the US. This is a deal breaker for me. I don’t listen at deafening levels but with this player I couldn’t. Album art work was not transferred for most of my FLAC files ripped from CDs. I put the exact same micro SD card in a different player and the art work transferred just fine. I have been a big Walkman fan since the CD Walkman & minidisc Walkman. This is not worthy of the name.

Hi DarioG,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. We're so sorry to hear that you are having battery draining issues with NW-A306 and it hasn't performed to your standards. This is definitely not the customer experience we want you to have. Your feedback regarding the AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated.
The Walkman consumes battery even when on playback standby, so the battery life will be shorter if the player is on standby for a long time. If multiple applications run, the battery consumption will also increase, and the usage time will be shortened. Battery life also varies depending on usage conditions, settings, and temperature. For more details, you can check the article link below for ways to reduce battery consumption and increase battery life.
https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00234119
The NW-A306 has AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function. Using AVLS limits the maximum volume. To disable AVLS, refer to this help guide link: https://helpguide.sony.net/dmp/1301/v1/en/contents/TP1000733590.html
You can also uninstall an app from the Walkman player. Please note that pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled. While you can't uninstall these apps, you can, however, disable them in certain cases. To disable an application, touch and hold the application icon you want to disable. Tap Disable. If Disable is not shown, tap the info icon for more options. For instructions on how to uninstall an app from the Walkman player, please visit this link.

The screen was a little too small for some offline apps that I needed and the device was also slightly under powered. Limited Google Play Store app selection. Battery life wasn’t great for my usage. As for Spotify, the screen was cramped and I had trouble with downloaded songs until I mounted the SD card correctly through the Google Files app. On the plus side, I was able to type on the tiny keyboard and it’s a totally fine MP3 player with wired or wireless earbuds.

Volume adjustment to a lower level may seem important as we may not want to increase the probability of hearing loss at an older age. Nevertheless, battery has improved and may not want to keep running since now it is persistent that it will stop after a certain number of hours. Plus, longer battery life compared to the older version.
