Customers are saying

Customers love the PlayStation Classic Console's affordable price and the inclusion of two controllers, finding it easy to use and a nostalgic trip down memory lane. However, many are disappointed with the limited game selection and some have noted issues with the emulation quality. The compact size is also a frequently praised feature.

    Good introduction to PS Library

This is a pretty good little emulator. It's very small and lightweight and comes with an HDMI cable. I wish that the controllers had analog sticks, but they are okay, a little small for my hands. I wish it came with a wall adapter for the power cable (USB), but I had one lying around, so it's not a huge deal. The menu is pretty decent. There are some good games, but only 20, and some of the big PS hits like Spyro are absent. If you've never owned or really played a Playstation, this is probably a good way to try it out and see if you like it. If you just want a good retro console and are willing to pay a bit more, the NES or SNES Classic is probably a better choice.

I was very excited to see Sony going retro with this PS1 classic. The initial price made me hesitant however as I soon learned of the limitations of the system. When BBY did a price drop, it became more likely for me to purchase it. I loved the throw-back design of the system and the games included. It is fun to play some of the old PS1 games, but it is limited only to what is onboard the chip, so if you get bored, what you have is what you got. Overall, could have gotten an emmulator for a cheaper price, but it wouldn't be in this cool form factor. Unless you're a die-hard Playstation fan, it might not make sense for you to get it.

    Great Once Hacked

Out of the box....not worth it, but with the BleemSync/RetroArch hack, total game changer. Not only PS1 games you can play. You can play mame, neogeo, snes and nes games as well.

    Playstation deserved better

In terms of hardware, the Playstation Classic mostly hits the mark. The detail of the Playstation unit itself is wonderfully rendered and genuinely worth keeping on display . Even the plug ends of the controllers are similar to the originals. It's too bad the controllers weren't based on the Dual Shock controllers, but I'm guessing that would have added even more cost to this device. As for software, this is where Sony really disappointed most fans. The selection is baffling as it includes games in series with much better sequels and/or games that don't really exemplify the best of the Playstation era. A lot of this is possibly due to licensing and possibly even porting issues, but surely Twisted Metal 2 should have been on this system versus the original (and I don't know anyone who clamored for Battle Arena Toshinden to make an appearance). Some games are even the PAL (pre-HD TV European television standard) version, which run slower and at a slightly different resolution than NTSC (used in North America and Japan). Though I have warmer, fuzzier feelings for the NES, SNES, and forthcoming Genesis classic systems, I absolutely loved the Playstation era. The lackluster nature of the PS Classic really saddens me, especially when it's clear that it's a better system when modded versus stock.

    Missed Opportunity for Sony

Love the compact size and easy set up. Was easily able to set it up in the car for the kids on a road trip. I only decided to finally purchase this when it reached it's lowest price point. Sony missed an opportunity to include more recognizable games, and more games overall to this system. I am glad I did not purchase this when it first came out for $100.

5 stars for the modding scene around this device. With a USB drive, and a little time you can turn this ps1 classic into the ultimate 90s emulation machine with retroarch being able to play thousands of 8-32bit classics. The ps1 classic itself has pretty good build quality, and the controllers feel as good today as they did back in '95. It doesn't include an AC adapter which is a little weird, but whatever, I've got plenty of old cell phone adapters that worked fine.

Cons: Sony did a terrible job implementing this user interface, the SONY logo has to play before every game load (irritating). I don't mind the game selection screen, I'm not very picky. The game choices are the problem. They could have at least put some fun MEMORABLE games on here. The ones they chose did NOT age well at all. Pros: Metal Gear is by far the best game on here. They also included TWO controllers. I love how light the system is, and easy to take on the go. I got mine very very cheap from Best Buy, so I feel like I got my money's worth.

Got this on sale couldn’t believe it was only $20 an actual old school mini Sony PlayStation with 20 games preinstalled that’s just a really hard deal to pass up imo. I think there should be more games that was PlayStation hits but for $20 you can’t go wrong to have two controllers come with it and old school GTA and the first resident evil that started what it’s become today. Definitely worth adding to collection or getting for your kid to play!

I waited for the price to drop before picking one up. I have fond memories of gaming on my original playstation years ago. This is a sharp little novelty product. It is easy plug and play, the real issue is the lack of games, and the ones included are very hit or miss on if they were worthy of being part of the library. there are ways to make this a more immersive experience and to grow the library leaps and bounds. worth a purchase at the lower price point, and fun enough to tinker with if you want to make it more a 'pi' like device.

While not great by default. Uses pal version of some of the games, limited and odd choices for some others. The system physically looks great and the controllers are decent but the cord is a little short. Once you modify the system thought it really opens up the possibilities of it's use.

It was such a great price I had to buy it. The unit is small but it does come with 2 controllers which is good. I wish the controller cables were a bit longer but they aren't too bad. It was easy to hook up and the UI is decent. I just wish they had a better game selection. However, for the money you can't beat it.

When this system came out at $100, it was no deal. However now that the price has fallen to 20% or 25% of the cost in December, it's a great buy! If you enjoy the first PlayStation system, this is a nice drive down memory lane. Some of the games play great, others are a little off, but for the price how can you go wrong. The controlls are great and over all the system works fine. Again if the price is $50, I would not buy, but for under $25 you can't go wrong!

This could have been an awesome system. I bought the PlayStation Classic after seeing several reviews on YouTube. The lacking game selection and the emulation issues are definitely here, but as the price has dropped. I think there is still value in this classic system.

Cool device, was $20 when I got them, bought one for myself and a couple as gifts too. Even better when you mod it and run different roms on it from different console systems. Only drawback is limited games and no power adapter included, but modding it helps. Wouldn't pay more than the $20 these were going for at one point originally though.

Flashback to playing the original PS

If you previously owned a PS and fondly remember playing any of the included games, the PS classic is a fun game console to play and return some of the nostalgia. The graphics and controller mechanics don't age well and the younger generations may not see the fun in playing them. The controllers are well built and for shorter play sessions this product is cheaper to buy as a package then to purchase the games individually.

Compact size is good, controller cables too short. Good number of games, but some of the more popular ones were not included, which was kind of disappointing. For the sale price we paid it's great. Probably wouldn't pay the $80.00 full price, though.

I had brought this months ago at original price but when the sales hit, it was just too low to pass up. I brought one to open. The games are just like I remembered and function just as well. The super slim and small size of the console has high novelty value. For the original price, it probably wasn’t worth it. But once the sales started, this is a very good buy against the small Nintendo ones.

I will say that I got this on sale for $25, and it is worth that price. If the listed price was that low or even a little higher, it'd maybe be a 4-star rating. But $60? No way. It only has 20 games pre-loaded on it, and if you take a look at the list, not many of those are actually all that great. I like RPGs, so Final Fantasy VII, Wild Arms, and Persona are worth the price for me. You add Oddworld, Rayman, Tekken 3, Resident Evil... Quite a few games worth playing. But notable titles like Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro being missing is kind of unforgivable. There's not much you can't just get on the PSN, so I wouldn't bother to pick this up unless you get it deeply discounted like I did. It is a poor attempt to match the quality of the NES and SNES Classic systems that Nintendo released.

Rushed out the door to back on nostalgia

As a PlayStation owner of all their devices, the Classic was going to be an awesome addition, maybe even replace my original PS1 - sadly it was rushed out the door in a very poor state. While the SNES Classic and NES Classic were not completely perfect, they worked well enough for all to enjoy with features a plenty and a library that defined the platform - the PS1 Classic was the complete opposite. With a selection of games that were only half good on the PS1 Classic, too many factors brought even those in question. Some PS1 titles were European versions that run badly and the emulation used for all titles made everything run even worse. The features available are lackluster and the only thing that saves this device is the hacking community but the initial purchase price is too much right now. $100, no. $60, no. $20 - $40 - it's the only time you should even contemplate picking this up. I returned mine after watching Digital Foundry's video review and other PS1 Classic reviews - this device is just not up to snuff and rushed to market to meet Christmas buyers not aware.
