Just like X-Box's online service, it is needed for multiplayer and online services, such as netflix. what i like most about it is the free games every month, even if you don't like them all, the cost of plus is well worth it for the games you get for free.

The PlayStation Plus membership is a cross platform program that gives you monthly free games on the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3&4. PlayStation Plus members also get discounts on other PlayStation Store games and other content such as add-on's and avatars. With all the freebies it easily pays for itself. The downside is that it is required for PlayStation 4 players in order to play online. So far the free content for PlayStation 4 players is limited to Indie games, but some of them are fun. As the selection of games grows the content will improve over time. Still worth having.

For $50 a year the free games, online play for PS4 and online storage across all PlayStation devices is more than worth it.

You have to have it to do multi-player now, so it's not like this was am optional purchase. It is still pretty good though. Sony has been putting a lot of free stuff out there for Plus members. Wish they could keep the network up though.
