Big Sound, Extra Bass in a Compact Design

When I opened this tiny speaker, I didn’t expect much of a chromatic sound. But when I turned it on and paired it with my phone, I was surprised to hear rich sound waves of varying frequencies—and bass. It is very small at approximately 3 ¼” w x 2 3/8” d x 2 ¼”h and is boxed with a strap and a micro USB cable. The mono speaker is even smaller at 1 ½”; however, it still manages to deliver a full range of tones with very little harmonic distortion, and with way more clarity than one would expect from a speaker four times plus its size. Main features of this product include Bluetooth, an Audio-In Stereo Mini Jack, a Long Battery Life, and the product’s Water-Resistant Design. Initially, a full charge was reached in a matter of minutes and subsequent repeated charging occurred quick. There also does not appear to be connection complications with the Bluetooth like I have experienced with other devices--it pairs almost instantly. I tried several different products by different manufacturers and in each case pairing the devices were effortless and the communication range extended over 30 feet. The speaker is also equipped with a microphone which allows it to be used as a speaker phone, and which also has great 2-way clarity within the communication range of up to 32’. When busy and needing to communicate on the phone, this is smaller and easier to carry from room to room than my phone. I’ve held on to my original iPod because I burned decades of my CD collection to its 160 GB hard drive to not only store my music, but to have the data to listen to without the use of the internet. Sometimes earphones are an irritant when working and I wanted to see how the iPod would work with the mini speaker. I connected the speaker and the iPod with an audio cord and it works great. The volume is somewhat limited with this type of sound connection as opposed to a higher, greater volume when using the Bluetooth capabilities; still the music is very harmonious, balanced and pleasant. The speaker enables me to listen to all my favorites at my personal workstation or where ever I wish to listen to them without the use of ear pods or the internet. The battery life almost doubles the battery life of any of my larger more dynamic sounding speakers. When using the speaker in the Bluetooth mode with all inputs sealed, the speaker’s design makes it water resistant. It is not completely waterproof, but water resistant enough to make it a great choice for the beach or pool side, especially when you wish to travel light. Weighing just under 6 ozs., this is a great little speaker for my workstation, office, kitchen, or on the go; and it surprises me that I like it as much as I do and that I have found so many uses for it that fit my lifestyle.

Small and lightweight, but lacking bass

Sound Quality----- At just a fraction of the size of the SRS-XB31, the SRS-XB01 can't compete with the sound quality of its bigger brothers.  Sound is more "tinny" and bass is lacking.  The speaker can get somewhat loud and can fill a small to medium-sized room, but it won't be powerful enough for parties or for entertaining a crowd.  Despite this, the sound is still better than my iPhone's speaker and I find this speaker handy for carrying around the house to listen to music or podcasts.  I would rate the sound about on par with the Anker SoundCore Mini 2. Bass Performance----- Despite the "Extra Bass" verbiage in this speaker's marketing, the bass on this speaker is lacking.  It's not completely absent and, in fact, lows sound fairly good on this speaker.  However, you won't get that satisfying "thump" heard in Sony's larger speakers. That's not to say that music sounds terrible on this speaker, but at a MSRP of around $35, you can't set your expectations too high. Features----- - IPX5 Water Resistant: It's not rated as high as some of speaker's larger speakers, but it is resistant to splashes (just don't submerge it in liquid). - Carrying strap: Personally one of my favorite features, the strap makes it easy to hang this speaker from a back pack while hiking or to simply tether the speaker to your wrist while working around the house.  The speaker is very lightweight (5.65 oz). - Music control buttons: You can play/pause, adjust the volume and skip tracks on the speaker directly without needing to dig out your phone. - Speakerphone: The speaker has a built-in mic and can be used to answer a quick phone call by pressing the Play button while your phone is ringing. - Micro USB charging: You don't need a special cable to recharge this speaker as any Micro USB cable will do, although a USB-C port would have future-proofed it a little more. Battery Life----- The speaker gets about 6 hours of usage while listening at a medium volume.  It definitely seems like Sony could have fit a larger battery inside of the unit and I'm curious as to why they didn't, as a single charge won't quite get you through the work day.

It’s another SONY musical magic trick

SONY SRS-XB01. Isn’t SONY supposed to play by the same rules of physics like everyone else? In my hand I’m holding a speaker that’s about the size (3.25” x 2.4” x2.25”) of my computer mouse. It’s filling up my family room with richly textured, loud, enjoyable, musical sound. This is nuts, but great fun. Only four controls on the top of this 5.65 oz Boom Box. Yeah, looking at it and saying Boom Box is hysterical, but you aren’t hearing it like I am. It’s all real. The raised controls are POWER (hold for 3 seconds for BT connect), a music CONTROL button (various stop, play, pause, skip commands), and the two VOLUME buttons. On my black-on-black speaker, they are near impossible to see but easy to feel. There is nothing missing here but the size, weight, and, of course, the music, which you already have on your phone. Yep. It’s a Boom Box. A really, really small Boom Box. Bluetooth connection was immediate. It reaches across a large room and is indicated by the only tiny LED visible under the speaker grill. Hidden under the rubberized door is a Stereo Mini Jack for devices that don’t have BT. Under that same door is a micro-USB port. SONY suggests a 6 hour battery life. The charge is provided with a micro-USB adapter cable (cable included, but without charging wart). It’s water-resistant (IPX5). Instructions are delivered by ICONS, only. I don’t know how SONY accomplishes these sound tricks, but they do, and they are wonderful sounding. This XB01 has decent sound quality at all volume levels, but the bass doesn’t match the rest of the range until you get the volume louder. This is not unusual, and it’s why “loudness contour” was invented. You simply need to use an EQ setting on your phone to boost the bass at lower volumes. Music expands and blooms out of the SONY XBO1 as you increase the sound level. This is a very small speaker. Expectations need to be reasonable, but this sound is far above expectations. If it were only a trick, I wouldn’t be recommending this SONY so highly, but the XB01 does a nice job with music you want to share with friends at the party. I’m not sure whether they’ll laugh from surprise or just applaud.

Packs A Lot of Sound in a Small Package

The Sony XB01 is an excellent continuation of the XB family of speakers. I have the XB41 and XB31, the XB01s much larger brothers and continue to be impressed with the sound quality, performance, and especially battery life of all speakers. The most important thing for a speaker is sound so I'll start with that. Sony has managed to squeeze a lot of sound out of such a small speaker. It will fill your room with quality sound or provide some atmospheric background sound for an outdoor space. Perfect for a day at the beach, pool, or campsite. It is water resistant (IPX5) so splashes won't kill it, but don't take it for a swim. Does it produce the best sound I've ever heard? No. Does it produce sound of such quality that I'm not ashamed to show it off? Absolutely. In fact, I'd gladly show off this speaker that is about the size of small fist but can fill a room/rooms with nice sounding music. With most small speakers, your expectations need to be adjusted. You aren't going to rattle windows with rumbling bass. However, the sounds are respectable coming from such a small speaker and high notes aren't tinny which is honestly what I expected. Build quality is very high. It feels durable and able to survive being taking outdoors, sitting on your desk at work, or tossed around in your beach bag. All would be appropriate and easily handled by the XB01. The four raised control buttons blend in with the black on black design, but are easily recognized with touch. It also comes with a nice convenient strap that you can use to hang the speaker or carry from location to location. It also comes with a short micro-USB charging cable. In conclusion, I would highly recommend the XB01. It packs a lot of punch for such a small speaker. If you want something that is going to have more thump, opt for one of the larger siblings. If you want something smaller to take around with you but still has 6 hours (incredible given the size!) of battery life and the power to fill a room, then the XB01 just might be for you. It's also worth mentioning that this speaker sells for $34.99! Quite frankly, I find that remarkable as I've had other speakers that cost substantially more and delivered similar if not less. So, yeah, I think the XB01 is a pretty darn good deal. Add it to your list of stocking stuffers for the holidays because I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed getting this. The uses are practically endless. Pros: *Size *Weight *Cost *Sound quality *Build quality *Battery life Cons: *Given the price, I don't really have a con to list here.

Great Surprise in a Small Package

Let me start by saying WOW, this little tiny speaker sounds this good! I was very impressed how rich the sound this little thing can produce and is pretty loud too. It is so small you can take it almost anywhere and it fits in your hand, it also comes with a lanyard that you can use to hang it. Speaker has 4 buttons on the top the Power/Paring, Play/Pause and the Up/Down volume buttons. On the side is a rubber cover that protects the micro USB socket for charging, and the AUX port. Paring is simple hold down the paring button, you will see the light bilking under the front grill, on your phone under you Bluetooth setting look for the speaker and pair it, once paired light will stay solid. In the package it comes with small iconic instruction manual, the speaker, lanyard and the micro USB cable. The only downside that I found was that it did not come with an A/C adapter, I used the one that came with my S9+ so far so good. I also used a longer micro USB cable because the one included is too small for my taste. This speaker is rated IPX5 which is water splash not proof so don’t try to submerge this thing in the water. If you’re looking for small, portable, lightweight, good sound at a budget price this little thing at $35 would do the work I was very impressed, Sony did a good job on this one definitely recommend this. Pros: Sound quality Size & Weight Portability Battery Life Ease of Use Cons: Small Charging Cable No A/C adapter

---SETUP--- The setup for Sony’s SRS XBO1 portable speaker was quick. After turning it on, the speaker starts looking for a device with bluetooth automatically, like a phone, tablet, or PC. ---FEATURES--- The key feature of this speaker is how small and portable it is without sacrificing good quality sound. It also has an auxiliary port for devices that may not have bluetooth and can be charged with any micro USB cable you may have lying around. ---PERFORMANCE--- The performance of this speaker is excellent for its size. The loudness of the speaker is about as loud as you would comfortable play audio in your own car. During my listening sessions, I didn’t hear the audio drop or lose connection with my bluetooth devices. During the playback of movies or podcasts, it works great. For music, as long as you aren’t listening to things with too much bass, it should work fine as well. ---EXPECTATIONS--- The product meets my expectations. I took the speaker to the gym to listen to my shows and not have to put on headphones. I could hear my movie comfortably enough and it wasn’t so loud that it was bothering others around me. Since I took it out of the package, I haven’t had to charge it and I’ve been playing about 5 hours of content on it. ---VALUE--- The price for the speaker in terms of value makes it an accessible, great gift for the upcoming festivities or gadget lovers. ---APPROVAL--- I highly recommend this product for people who want to have a little extra sound for their laptop or mobile phone while at work or for those who want to give gifts to their co-workers, friends, and relatives.

The SRS-XB01 is better in many ways than the XB10

This speaker costs almost half the price as the XB10 I picked up last year. Both have IPX5 water resistance, both have audio input jacks, both charge using micro USB, both have microphones supporting hands-free calling and both have straps. The more expensive speaker should be better, right? Why spend less on this SRS-XB01? - The SRS-XB01 is controlled by 4 prominent easy to feel buttons arranged in a grid so it CAN be used in the dark. - Clearer sound. - Smaller, lighter and easier to hold. - Can be pointed straight up or sideways without rolling away. Why spend more for the XB10? - Longer battery life, 16 vs 6 hours. - Louder sound, but less clear - More bass, but muddy - NFC pairing - You need the ability to connect two XB10s for stereo sound. Things to consider: - The XB10 will roll around unless it is balanced on the special lanyard/cradle. Don’t ever lose the cradle. - Good luck using the XB10 controls in the dark. They went out of their way to make it slick and smooth so there are no raised buttons to navigate by touch. You use your device to control the music instead, wasting battery by powering your screen and all the other things your device does in the background while unlocked. Note: This device does NOT support NFC. The specs listed by Best Buy are wrong. It is not advertised by Sony as having this feature and it is not listed in Sony’s specs. There is no mark on the device like the XB10 that supports NFC. I also tried -for science. Hopefully they will correct the product details.

This is a perfect little pocket speaker. It is high quality with a good battery (Been running it for about 5 hours and its still going strong. Sony claims about 6 hours, so that seems around the ballpark) and light (about 160 grams per Sony). It fit nicely in my pocket so it was easy to carry. It is water resistant at IPX-5. this means if it starts raining or gets splashed it should keep on working. The sound quailty is on par for Sony. Only difference between this and my bigger speakers from Sony is the amount of volume it can push, and its small so that is to be expected. Though I have noticed if the volume is at 100% and when I pushed some treble from classical music it got a bit tinny. Turning the sound down a few notches helped. I might have been able to adjust to via an equalizer. But that was the only "bad" artifacting I found when using the speaker. Otherwise it sounds good. If your out and about in a moderately noisy environment that might be a concern just because of the size and what it can push, but I haven't had a chance to test that. However for the price and size its a great pocket bluetooth speaker. I plan on taking it with me on trips, so when I'm in the hotel room watching movies/videos or music I can use that instead of my phones speaker or headphones. I think overall for the form factor it does a good job of being a speaker that can produce adequate sound to fill the space nearby without overwhelming it. It give the same Sony sound quaility and the fact its light and small it makes the perfect travel speaker.

When you unbox this speaker it sure doesn't look like much. It's very small and plain in appearance. Basic controls on top with a rubber feel. Rubber hatch opens to show the micro-USB port and 3.5mm port. Comes only with a wrist strap and short USB cable for charging. Battery life isn't the longest, but for this size speaker you have to make some concessions. Once I paired this speaker up and get to some music, I was pretty impressed. No, you won't confuse this with a larger, more expensive speaker, but the sound quality and overall loudness capability surprised me. It does sound a little "tinny", but we are talking about a very small speaker. For it's size and price, I was not expecting much, but found this to be a very good little speaker. Obviously a great on the go speaker, but also for an office cubicle or bathroom, as It is IPX5 water resistant. I "auditioned" this speaker in the shower and I think that will be it's new home. Great shower speaker and when you place this up close a wall it increases the bass to a certain degree. Sony did well with this "little speaker that could."

The Sony-SRS-XB01 portable speaker has good sound with a very nice price tag, MSRP of $34.99. This small, black unit that is all of 3 inches long (east to west), 2 inches deep (back to front), and 2 inches high is easy to transport because it is so light, small, and comes with a wristband that is attachable to the right side of the speaker by the compartment where the USB charging cord and/or the headphone jack are. After charging it for awhile, until the light turns blue, the speaker starts, once turned on, starts looking to pair with a device once the Bluetooth button is pressed on the control panel located on top of the speaker. I initially used this with my Android smartphone to play music. Easy Peasy to link and the battery charge maintains itself for a long time. This speaker can work with any Bluetooth device. Not once did the speaker drop the signal with my device and played my music for hours, uninterrupted. I really enjoyed the songs that were played and I also loved that it took very little effort to accomplish this. Much better sound than my small HP speakers that I have plugged into my desktop. I would definitely recommend this item.

The SRS-X801 is a David to a lot of Goliaths out there. Also, like David, it packs a punch, proving that size isn’t everything! One of the things I have long liked about Sony electronics (TVs, BD players, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) is they are essentially “plug and play,” making them very easy to set up as compared to some other brands. The same is true with the X801. Having fully charged it, I was able to pair it with both my Echo Show and my wireless phone within seconds on the first attempt, and it was ready for the music. A definite plus! First using it with the Echo, I discovered the speakers built in volume control does not allow the speaker to get loud. Not a problem for me, because it is certainly loud enough for comfortable listening. Volume decrease takes it all the way down. Just to see if I could, I was able to coax a louder volume by using the Echo’s remote control. Audio quality is surprisingly excellent for such a small device and at a relatively modest price. Pink Floyd, U2, Sarah McLachlan, classical, etc. all sound good! The X801 is water resistant, has speaker phone capability, is highly portable, and seems as if it’s going to have good battery life (used it about 3 hours at the longest stretch, and it was still going strong). The only thing I could say as a negative is it comes with a USB cord (very short), but it does not come with an adaptor plug. Fortunately, I had a couple laying around. This, of course, has nothing to do with the X801’s performance which certainly overshadows that minor shortcoming. This little David is a giant killer!

Awesome sound in a small package

First impression: Small with a rubberized outer coating the speaker is more portable rugged. The small rubber ring that is attached to the speaker makes it even more user friendly as you can hang it from anything like a bike handlebar or your dashboard or clip it to your backpack. There is a rubber gasket to cover the Micro USB port (cable included) and the audio in port. There are buttons for power, volume, play/pause, and bluetooth pairing. If you buy two of these you can set it up for stereo sound which is a nice option. Sound: Basically, they actually sound really great, I was pleasantly surprised with the BASS, it was really very good. There is no distortion at loud volumes and the speaker is very loud for the size and would be great for the beach or by the pool or at a BBQ. Bluetooth setup: Hold the power button for 3 seconds and you are ready to pair it up. I used it with my NOTE 8. Battery life: 16 hours which is better than the Beats Pill at 12 hours. It makes a difference and I appreciate the extra battery life. Water resistance: It's not water proof but it is water resistant. Overall, I really like this bluetooth speaker. It is very portable and has a long battery life and has great bass and it is water resistant too. Works great with my phone and even as a computer speaker. I brought my speaker to work and when i play it people are surprised on how nice the sound is that comes out of the little thing. Even though it is portable I leave it in my desk drawer. I really like this little thing.

This is my first experience with a Bluetooth speaker and man it's exceeded my expectations! It has a decent range, and thanks to the splash-proof design, I use it daily in the shower, and while I am getting ready for work. It was very easy and quick to setup. Took no effort to connect with Bluetooth. Although I don’t expect to get calls while in the shower, the speaker allows you to answer a call too, which is freaking awesome! There's a small led on the front top left that flashes blue when not connected to anything, stays a solid blue when connected and stays a solid orange when charging. This little speaker gets surprisingly loud! Based on the test music I used, which is always Rush, the sound quality is very clean. Could hear full instrumentation from drums, guitars, bass and synthesizers. Everything fits together. Lows, mids, and highs are pretty well delivered. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Sony - Srs-Xb01 Portable Bluetooth Speaker and I would totally recommend this little fella to everybody I know.

I’m always looking for a good portable speaker. When I saw the photo of the Sony SRS-01, I thought it would be about the size of a soda can. I was surprised to see how small it was: fits within my palm. As the forever optimist, I wanted to see how it worked. I was pleasantly surprised to how it sounded sounded. Pros: -Great sound. It projects really well in a room and outside. The sounds are crisp and clear. -Portability. Again, it fits in my palm and easy to carry around. -connectivity. Easy set up. You can connect either through Bluetooth or through the 3.5 jack. -Battery. The box states 6 hours before recharge. I’m averaging a little under 6 but pretty close. Cons: -Bass? Could use a little more. -charger. Comes with the micro-USB cable but no wall charger. I’m always scared that mix matching accessories might not work. Overall, good product with good sounds. It gets the job done and easy to carry around and not take up too much space.

Perfect to take anywhere. I can just pop it in my pocketbook or computer bag and away we go. Speaker weighs more or less 1/2 a pound. It is only about 2” x 3” in size and weight is definitely not an issue. I can’t get over the price for a Sony speaker and that the sound isn’t compromised considering its size. It has Extra Bass which is a feature that I absolutely love and if you turn up the sound loud, the bass still sounds great. It is Water Resistant, so being out in the rain or getting it a little wet certainly won’t be a concern. It comes with an attachable handle that you can put on your wrist to carry it. Battery life is approximately 3 hours with volume cranked up and 6 hours at regular volume. It has a built-in microphone to accept cell phone calls. However, because it is in speaker phone mode, it is a bit muffled. I would like to have a better sound for my Echo Dot. If you have an audio cable, you can hook it up to play better sounding music. Just make sure to keep it plugged into an outlet so the speaker doesn’t run out of power while connected to the Dot.

So I've been testing out this new portable speaker by Sony, the SRS-XB01. It's a nice little speaker (smaller than expected, but still powerful) that packs a nice punch thanks to Sony. Very simple and easy to use if you've ever used a Bluetooth product before. Great for listening to your tunes and/or using as a speakerphone when paired with your mobile phone. Very loud and clear audio and phone calls as well. Inside the package was a USB charging cable, the user manual, and a small lanyard loop to connect to the front right corner. On top of the speaker are 4 buttons, play/pause/phone button, pairing button, and the -/+ volume control buttons. Initial pairing is automatic when you turn on the speaker for the first time. The blue light behind the speaker grill flashes signifying it's in pairing mode while you also put your mobile device in pairing mode. It connects fast and easy. Battery life was pretty decent for a speaker this small and charging was just as fast. I recommend this speaker for anyone looking for a great personal speaker with a pretty nice punch for the price range.

First off let me say I was a little confused when I saw the picture for the Sony SRS-XB01 online versus seeing it person, almost disappointed. It seemed a lot bigger online but I guess you have to read the description and thats my fault. I fits in the palm of my hand and is about half a pound maybe less. I have several Sony Blue tooth speakers that I own already and have enjoyed all of them and the sound they produced so I was curious to see what this handful of a speaker could do. It looks nice and simple, got mine in black with a gray mesh grill, controls are on top and the charging port is next to it and it comes with a lanyard cord you can strap on to the speaker itself. Now the sound, wow for the size of this thing it actually pumps out clear music, now mind you the bass is a little lacking but for the size and price point I was really impressed. It also has a 6 hour battery life and you can take calls on it. So if you're looking for a budget speaker you can just take on the go with you the Sony SRS-XB01 is perfect.

I love this small but mighty speaker!! Good job Sony!! Out of the package I was a little unsure what to do - the instruction page is just pictures, simple enough but was looking for a little verbiage. There is a QR for a help guide though! The unit itself fits in your hand. I like the little rubber "legs" on the bottom to keep it in place. Very light weight which makes it easy to throw in my purse or backpack. The buttons on the top are hard to see as they blend in but you can feel them and after a few times of using them you know what and where they are. Would have liked a wall charger but found one in my sons room that i could use the USB cable in. I was able to get this little guy up and running with no problems/Bluetooth. The sound is wonderful - perfect for putting in the bathroom for showers and blowdryers, can hear perfectly the music I stream from my phone. So far battery life is good, gave it a full charge and have used it about 4.5 hours. Would absolutely recommend it, especially for the price!

My initial thoughts about this $35, Lime-sized speaker were blown away completely once I heard it. I was expecting a tinny, chinsy sound but was super-impressed with the fullness and quality of sound this extremely inexpensive, half-pint sized speaker produced! With only four rubberized buttons on top and a micro-usb and 1/8" audio jack for non-bluetooth devices, this fun-sized speaker is simply awesome. Really. I tested it with multiple phones and impressed multiple people with it. Touting a 6 hour battery life, IPX5 water-resistance (DO NOT SUBMERGE), easy BT pairing - you can't go wrong and it is EXTREMELY portable. Set it in the cup holder of your golf cart or strap to your fishing boat for convenient sound! Truly impressed Sony!

This little speaker packs quite a punch! I was pleasantly surprised by how much sound this little speaker produces. It also works as a small speaker phone. I found I could easily hear the person I was calling and they could hear me so long as I kept the speaker stationary. It’s not entirely waterproof. It will survive some rain or some splashes, but it isn’t rated to be submerged. Thanks to its size, this speaker is great for camping or a picnic. All in all, I say pick it up. I doubt you will find a better speaker at this size and price. It won’t rival the sound of a speaker 3x its price, but for what it is, I really like it.
