This compact and physically light receiver (just under 21 pounds out of the box) is specified to do virtually anything you might ask of a modern AV receiver. The relatively light weight actually worried me, especially when I compared this device to the AVR it replaced from several years ago that was much heavier to lift.
My fears turned out to be unfounded. My listening room is small, but the STR-AN1000 easily drove my Bowers & Wilkins 606 S2 Anniversary Edition front and center speakers to very loud levels and the presentation was clean, unrestrained and with absolutely no edginess. My HSU subwoofer, of course, was self-powered and my vintage NHT surrounds absolutely came to life with their new power source. Since my main speakers present an 8-ohm load, I doubt they are getting the 100 watts per channel output that Sony specifies since the Sony spec is into a 6-ohm load. It did not matter, as I could not hear any strain or constraint when I drove my 8-ohm speakers.
My surround set up is 5.1 and my current monitor is only 4K, but this Sony has me ready for 8K when I am able to make that addition to my equipment.
Set up was straightforward. I had been advised to be prepared to make measurements at set up, and I was ready with an inexpensive laser measure which allowed quick confirmation of speaker placement with the calibration microphone. The instructions stated that the process might take a while, but it was completed in just a few minutes. The receiver takes you through a guided set-up of the process.
I do have a couple of quibbles. The process for memorizing the frequencies for my local FM stations was counter-intuitive and took longer than I expected. Reception with the supplied wire antenna was just fine, once the stations were programmed.
Unfortunately, the receiver does not have an input for a low-level source like a phono cartridge. You would either have to get your own pre-amp if you want to use a turntable, or you would have to have a Bluetooth turntable like Sony's PS-LX310BT, which I fortunately had. I had not used it for a while since my living room home theatre set up is not conducive to using a turntable. With the STR-AN1000, I was able to pair with the turntable in my personal listening room in seconds. Now if I could only find enough space for my old record albums in my newly-equipped lair!
The remote is compact, but unlighted. The big blue HOME button helps direct traffic. Press it, and you will see a graphic to either WATCH video sources or LISTEN to audio only sources. After pressing WATCH, the remote allows me to navigate between the TV, my Blu-Ray Player and my Roku box. Press LISTEN, and I choose between FM radio, the turntable, or, for example, Spotify.
There are six HDMI inputs and two of them are 8K ready. This receiver is compatible with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, IMAX enhanced, and dts:x. No, I have not tried them all. Suffice it to say, the Dolby surround experience is full and wonderful in my listening room. On my favorite movies, sound placement is precise and exciting. I am getting a better surround experience than my older equipment was capable of producing. And I have no complaints about the music presentation either. Rock, jazz, or classical, Sony handles them all with aplomb.
One thing that has not changed for the better, and I don't single out Sony for this criticism, is that CEC over HDMI still is not mixed component friendly. If you have an all Sony set up, I am sure your Sony remote can turn all your components on with a press of the receiver's ON button, and vice-versa. I could not control my non-Sony components using the CEC feature. I was relegated to using the individual remotes for specific tasks that I wanted to perform with them.
The STR-AN1000 is a handsome, practical, and versatile do-it-all AVR and I highly recommend it.

Dialogue Dialogue Dialogue

The biggest issue with just about everyone’s surround sound set-up now a days is the lack of clarity in the dialogue when it comes to watching movies/games/sporting events and even music and the main reason for this is receiver’s that most people are using. I’m happy to say that the Sony AN1000 fixes this issue, I was blown away with how I could FINALLY hear the dialogue between characters and that I didn’t have to turn my surround sound up only to lower it during the action scene taking place 20 seconds after the conversation. Not only was the clarity in the conversations great when the 5.1 surround was on it even worked for 2.1 channel incase your watching old videos or listening to record player.
Sony has done a great job in every aspect of this receiver, the set up is simple and the prompts are easy to follow and understand. The updating is quick and easy, you can see it on the display screen and the wifi performance for downloads is quick and install is without issue. For the initial setup you will need a tape measurer if you want the perfect sound I would highly recommend not guessing the distances and measure as instructed.
The AN1000 is packed with every feature imaginable for listening from chromecast/Spotify connect/Airplay and works with Sonos (with adapter). The AN1000 supports all the latest and greatest audio formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X , DTS: virtual). I did notice that the AN1000 tends to keep the sound more true to life and does not overly dramatize explosions/affects, this isn’t to say that the explosions/affects are toned down I would say they are more cinematic sounding. Sony also allows you to add wireless rear speakers and sub for those of us that don’t want to run wires in walls. When it comes to music Sony provides 360 Spatial sound mapping which you can turn on and if available is a game changer, 360 spatial sound mapping is to audio what OLED was to screen’s is the only way I can describe it.
Speaking of screens and viewing experience the AN1000 supports all the latest HDR quality standards for passthrough viewing. All of the standards (HDR10,Dobly Vision/HLG/IMAX enhanced) work and I appreciate the fact that they will scroll across the screen of the AN1000 so you know what your getting. I used this with the PS5 and all of the benefits were available (HDR, VRR, ALLM). There are 6 HDMI inputs in the back which can upconvert video being past through if needed and the addition of 8k helps make the receive future proof. Paired with my 65 inch OLED all images that passed through the Sony looked great with no screen tearing or any distortion.
The Sony offers a bunch features which have it punching above its weight class, the addition of zone 2 and 3 makes the AN1000 a versatile product that can become the center of your home entertainment hub. While using the AN1000 the CEC function worked amazing and let me control everything through one remote.
I only had 2 issues with the AN1000 one is the app, the app navigation is a bit clunky but im hoping this can be fixed with an update to be a bit more streamlined/easier to navigate. Second is when using the receiver as a passthrough sometimes the Sony AN1000 setting screen shows up overlaid over the streaming device content which is a bit cumbersome but not a deal breaker.
Overall this is one of the best receivers I have ever used and would highly recommend it to everyone.

This is a powerful receiver, I was excited to upgrade to a 5.1.2 atmos setup and I was not diaappointed. I now have upward firing speakers on top of my rear tower speakers, and I have to say, if you want to be impressed with the new setup watch any underwater scene, those are the most amazing sounding to show off the overhead effect. The calibration seup for the speakers worked well. I waited for this receiver for the HDMI 2.1 support so I could use it to passthrough 4K/120Hz and VRR on my PS5. Which leads me to my one complaint, the unit seems a bit buggy. I have had multiple issues with the unit not making any sound without powering down everything and turning it all back on. I have also had issues with VRR passthrough. With this being a new model, I am hopeful some of these things will be fixed with firmware updates (there was already an update when I initially powered it on). I'll give an update in a few months about the bugs, hopefully they will be fixed. Overall this is a great receiver and I would recommend it.

First off the unit is beautiful and sleek. The power provided by it brings out the goodness of all 9 speakers. Have my PS5 and Switch 2 directly to it and I’m a happy camper. Movies come to life and music is also more enjoyable. I cannot recommend this unit enough.

This Sony A/V Receiver is so easy to setup especially for Dolby Surround Sound uitilizes the include microphone. We were putting this in room that had existing speakers mounted in the ceiling and the walls. Not quite perfect locations but the Sony phone app does all the work to optimally configure the room using the existing speakers as well as some new ones added to make 7.2 compliant for you.

The Sony receiver offers a comprehensive suite of features and adaptable functionality. Its compatibility extends to a wide range of speaker systems. While soundbar integration is possible, it may limit volume control through the receiver. A notable drawback is the remote control's reliance on infrared technology, which necessitates a direct line of sight. This limitation can be mitigated through the use of an IR extender, available on platforms like Amazon, or by utilizing the receiver's application interface, although the latter does not fully replicate remote control functionality. Despite these considerations, the receiver's performance has been satisfactory to date.

Bought this to replace an old Onkyo 5.1 receiver that was on it's last leg. This has been an amazing piece of equipment. The sound quality alone was a big improvement from our last receiver. Brightened up the high notes from our Polk tower speakers, and even has our subwoofer sounding better/cleaner. The setup was a tad difficult to figure out at first, but I'm pretty sure that was just user error - definitely make sure that the HDMI cable supports ARC/eARC or at least 4k/8k. Connects to wifi and allows me to stream music from my phone through Chromecast, without any hiccups or issues. And the bluetooth has a great range as well - I can walk from one end of my house to the other, or outside, and never lose connection between phone and receiver. With the eARC, it automatically plays sound from the TV and will do so regardless of the receiver being on or in standby mode. I haven't gone further than a 5.1 channel set up, but it still sounds absolutely amazing to my ears.

With the Bravia Link integration with a Sony TV, this is a top choice if you have a Sony. You can control most sound settings from the TV remote and onscreen menus, and the CEC control is flawless. The 360SSM is fantastic, and the overall sound field is great. But it loses a star because the setup can be fiddly, it can thunk loudly when it powers up, there are constant soft thumps when switching sources, and the TV Center speaker, if your TV supports it, has issues with some sources.

I recently purchased the Sony STR-AN1000 7.2 Channel A/V Receiver from Best Buy, and I must say it has been an incredible upgrade to my home theater system. I recently purchased the Sony STR-AN1000 7.2 Channel Dolby Atmos & Dolby Vision 8K HDR Network A/V Receiver from Best Buy, and it has been an outstanding addition to my home theater system. The setup was straightforward, thanks to its Automatic Speaker Calibration, which ensured optimal sound without much effort. The audio performance is exceptional, with immersive surround sound, crystal-clear dialogue, and deep bass that enhances movie nights and music listening. The Dolby Atmos experience truly elevates the viewing experience, offering detailed height and directional sound effects. The receiver is also future-proof with HDMI 2.1, supporting 8K passthrough and 120Hz refresh rates, making it perfect for next-gen gaming consoles. I had a sony strdn1080. When i moved out of state i decided i didnt want to dealvwith a “wired” system any longer so i went with a sonos arc, 2xones (surrounds) and a sonos sub. It was good but i missed watching movies and listening to music through my sony set up. I finally bit the bullet and ordered the sony str an1000, dusted off my definitive d9 (fronts) d7 surrounds, bought a definitive dymension m20 center, svs PB 1000 pro and couldnt be happier. Im glad the sony now works with Sonos, is far more diverse than my previous model and offers other wireless capabilities. My movies sound great, music is crisp and clean. I even got a turntable and splurged for a nice cartridge -very happy with this receiver. Wish I hadnt waited so long. Moved the sonos downstairs to my living room and enjoying it as well.

This new model, the STR-AN1000, represents a significant upgrade from my previous Sony AVR STR-DN 1080. At first glance, it may appear similar with only minor enhancements, but in terms of specifications and overall experience, the STR-AN1000 surpasses expectations. While the external appearance remains unchanged, which I personally appreciate, the remote has undergone an update to offer a better grip, thanks to its smaller size – a notable improvement. One key addition is the HDMI 2.1 compatibility with VRR for gaming, a feature I missed in my previous model.
Moreover, the user interface has a fresh and well-organized look. Boasting 6 4K and 8K inputs along with 2 outputs, the device is well-equipped for modern connectivity needs. The setup process was effortless, and the on-screen software proved to be self-explanatory, guiding me seamlessly through the sound setup. I connected my Klipsch Reference 5.1.4 with Dolby Atmos, and the resulting audio was truly exceptional, particularly with the immersive 360 spatial audio experience.
Notably, the inclusion of WiFi, along with the convenient AirPlay and cast functions, adds significant value to the overall functionality of the device.

I have always loved Sony home theater products. I am thrilled they jumped back in the ring with their new line of receivers! I just updated from the 2016 STR-DN1060, which I really enjoyed. It works perfectly to this day. I just wanted to keep current with the new technology. I didn’t need the ES line for my my purpose. Although it is identical to the entry ES, the Sony STR-AZ 1000 ES, except it doesn’t have a removable power cord, and the ES has a RS232 port for integration with third party control systems. I did not need those features.
In my opinion, the Sony STR-AN1000 receiver is a true masterpiece in the world of audio equipment. Its exceptional sound quality, versatile connectivity options, sleek design, and advanced features, like the **360 spatial sound mapping**, make it a perfect choice for anyone passionate about audio. Whether you are a music lover, “movie buff” or gaming enthusiast, this receiver will elevate your audio experience to new heights. I highly recommend the Sony STR-AN1000 to anyone seeking a premium receiver that delivers outstanding performance and value for money! I paired it with some Klipsch speakers and the Sony X90L 65 inch TV. It’s a Masterpiece with this receiver!

I have been interested and home surround sound systems as early as 1985. Throughout the years, I’ve owned numerous types of home theater receiver’s, including Onkyo, Yamaha, and the latest being Denom. but, until I bought this receiver, I really didn’t understand how clear surroundsound can be, especially the Atmos effect. I’ve been using at most receivers for about seven years, and all this time I felt very underwhelmed. I just thought that was the typical presentation for that technology. When I bought this receiver, I literally felt like I was going from black-and-white to color except from an audio perspective. The sound separation is so clear and sharp. Any Atmos affect in the 3-D imaging of the sound is unbelievable. I’m so glad that I stumbled upon this receiver, which I also feel is a bargain. The set up was very easy, especially the calibration, which, with other brands, requires numerous areas of positioning with the microphone for the calibration. I highly recommend this receiver, and I’m enjoying every second of it. I am actually re-watching all of my atmos movies and he sound completely different to me.

This is a great receiver for getting in to home theater in a small to medium room! Pros: The 360 spacial surround makes all of the difference. The placement of sound is perfect and seamless throughout. I elected to also go for the wireless 5 series surrounds for my application. I have not experienced any dropouts at all. So I am using this as a 5 1.2 set up and I love it. This receiver will handle most all speakers fairly well except higher end power hungry ones and definitely nothing below 4 ohms. You will need to jump up to the az5000 es series for that. Across the front I am running the Jamo concert series and they sound ridiculous in this application, as an example. I would skip the az1000 es series because there's not really any real gain for the price difference in my opinion.
Cons: The remote is eh...they could have done a little better here. Not much here. The look of the receiver hasn't really changed either from the earlier receivers. And the GUI is a little stale. This really only affects set up though so not so bad.
Hope this helps out. Can't really go wrong with this one! Sony did great for this model.
