A solid and good speaker. Very good. Sony is usually solid. This hits that mark. Compared to the higher priced brands. Like Bose. No where near as expensive and it sounds just as good. Just as of not more durable. I would recommend it to anyone looking for one of these. I would also not hesitate to buy it as a gift.

Sony ULT Field 3: Built for Bass
I grew up in the 80's and 90's when everyone had a jam box. The Sony ULT Field 3 is what I always wish I had when we were swimming, camping, or just hanging out. It's the perfect music box, or rectangle, for outdoors and after putting it through some real-life testing—indoors, outside, and even during a backyard party, I’ve got a pretty clear picture of what this speaker can do.
This speaker is part of Sony’s newer “ULT” line, which is focused on deep bass, high volume, and performance. If you’re into outdoor activities, like hanging out at the pool, sand volleyball, beach trips, or just having music with you wherever you go, this is a must have.
*Design & Build Quality*
The build is one of the speaker’s best features. It feels solid and durable right out of the box. It has a tough rectangular design with soft-touch plastic on the sides and a solid fabric mesh across the front and back. The speaker feels like it’s made to be thrown in a backpack or taken on a trip and it can handle some bumps. It's lightweight for carrying too.
It’s IP67-rated, so it’s waterproof, dustproof, and resistant to drops. The first place I took this speaker was a backyard get together with kids and water splashing everywhere. I even rinsed it under the faucet to clean off some dirt, and it didn't miss a beat. Definitely a good choice if you’re out in the elements.
There are rubber feet on one side for horizontal placement, but you can also stand it vertically. That’s useful depending on how much space you’ve got.
The controls are on the top: power, bluetooth, volume up/down, play/pause, and a special ULT button that boosts the bass. The buttons are easy to feel, so you don’t have to guess in the dark or when you’re outside.
There’s also a detachable strap that lets you sling it over your shoulder. I love the idea, but actually getting the strap unhooked from the built-in clips was kind of a pain. In a way, that's good because you don't have to worry about it becoming detached. Once it's on, though, it makes carrying the speaker much easier and it kind of reminds me of carrying the music around back in the day.
*Setup and Features*
The ULT Field 3 is easy to setup too. I turned it on, opened my phone’s Bluetooth, and it showed up right away. What’s nice is that it supports 2 devices simultaneously, which means I could stay connected to both my phone and laptop at the same time. No need to keep disconnecting and reconnecting.
Charging is done through USB-C, and you can use it as a portable power bank. I actually charged my phone from it during a long day outside, it’s not a fast charge, but it’s enough to get your phone going again.
If you download the Sony app called Sound Connect, you get access to some extra features, including:
A 7-band equalizer to tweak the sound
Switching sound modes (default, ULT mode, and custom EQ)
One cool new feature is the DJ control. You've got 8 features that you can add to the music for a little bit of fun or a few laughs. There's Robot, Drums, Scratch, Audience, Voice Phaser, Reggaehorn, and Rhythm. You can also turn on an isolator or dial in the Custom EQ.
*Sound Performance*
Here’s where things get fun. This speaker is all about the bass. Even without turning on the ULT mode, the low-end is already strong. But when you hit that ULT button, it really shows it's bass gets punchier, deeper, and more noticeable, especially on songs with lots of beats or low tones. Pro-Tip: Turn the bass boost off for longer battery life.
I tested a variety of music from 80's to Hip-Hop, Rock, and even movie soundtracks. I really noticed the power when I was in my backyard. We didn't even have the speaker on at its highest volume.
Vocals and mid-range sounds come through fairly clearly, though I did notice that if you crank the volume and keep the ULT mode on, the bass can start to overpower. The highs can also sound a little sharp at really high volume—especially if you’re indoors or standing close to the speaker. Outdoors, the sound spreads better and stays more balanced.
One thing to note: this isn’t a 360-degree speaker. The sound comes out in one direction, so it’s best to point it toward wherever the people are. It gets loud enough for small parties or group hangs, but placement makes a big difference.
*Battery Life*
Battery life is one of the speaker’s strong points. Sony claims up to 24 hours, and that's fairly accurate at medium volume without the ULT mode on. With ULT mode and higher volume levels, I was getting closer to 5 or 6 hours, which is still decent considering how powerful the bass is.
There’s also a quick charge feature. I tested this a few times: 10 minutes of charging gave me around 2 hours of playtime, which helps if you're hanging all day at the pool, or if you forget to charge it and the battery is low.
The app give you the battery percentage, but you can also turn on an option, in the app, that tells you the battery percentage when you turn the device on.
*Pros*
IP67 is great for all outdoor settings
Powerful Bass and great sound really surprises you from such a compact speaker
Long battery life with fast charging
You can charge your phone
Carrying Strap
Multipoint connection
App gives you a few added extras
*Needs Improvement/Ideas*
Bass can drown out vocals at high volume
Treble sounds a little harsh at high volume
Sound only goes in one direction
Strap is a little difficult to take off
*Final Thoughts*
The Sony ULT Field 3 is a great speaker if you’re the type of person who wants music that’s loud, full of bass, and you like the outdoors. It’s not the most balanced speaker if you’re an audiophile, but for casual listening, parties, and outdoor fun, it’s a great addition. It’s well built, it's Sony, and the sound is powerful. If you want something that can survive the outdoors, and liven up the party, it's a must-have. Believe me, this is not your typical bluetooth speaker, I highly recommend it.

Bought this as a speaker I can listen to while wrenching on my cars in my garage. The audio quality is impressive, but the bass is not as solid as other reviewers have made it out to be. Still though, I would definitely buy this again as it sounds good and looks good.
We appreciate the feedback on the ULT FIELD 3 and are glad you find the audio quality impressive and that it works great in your garage!
For an even stronger low-end, please ensure you press the dedicated ULT button on the speaker to activate the bass boost feature. You can also fine-tune the bass by creating a Custom EQ in the Sony | Sound Connect app.
Thanks for choosing Sony. Best regards, Eliab.

High Performance From a Small Package

The Sony ULT FIELD 3 speaker is a recent addition to the ULT family of portable Bluetooth speakers. Sony has designed the ULT 3 for people on the go, and have made it easy and convenient to take along and share your music with others.
The ULT 3 contains one tweeter, one woofer, and two passive radiators (one at each end) that provide a rich, full sound for music, yet you can turn the bass down for podcasts and phone calls so they aren’t “boomy” sounding when listening to speech. While it is not a stereo unit, it can be combined with other Sony ULT speakers to provide a true stereo experience using the Party Connect function. The “ULT” feature is an added bass boost that can be turned on or off using a dedicated button on the control panel that lights up when activated (the color changes depending on viewing angle). However, the ULT 3 does not have the “party lights” feature of the other, larger units in the series.
The ULT 3 is designed to be waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and rustproof to IP67 standards. That makes it suitable for outdoor use, including the beach. The exterior of the speaker is covered with a textured, woven, fabric-like covering that while being able to withstand water and dirt, also feels pleasing to the touch and offers a surface that is readily grippable. The width, or thickness, of the speaker is such that most people should be able to easily pick it up with one hand to carry it. There are two mounts on the top surface of the unit that allow the included shoulder strap to be easily attached and detached. This strap is slightly over one inch wide and allows for the speaker to comfortably hang from your shoulder. The ULT 3 has a bit of heft to it, giving it the feel of a quality item but is not overly weighty where it would be tiring to carry.
The controls are on the top surface of the speaker and the markings are raised and colored to make them easy to see and use. The buttons have a nice amount of haptic feedback when pressed. While the ULT 3 is designed to sit with the long edge down, it can also be set on either end without causing issue to the sound quality. The passive radiators on the ends are also vented around their perimeter to allow for air movement when the speaker is set on end. Sony claims up to 24 hours of battery life with the volume set at “22”. According to the online “Help Guide” from Sony’s website, the maximum volume setting is “50”, so a setting of 22 is slightly less than 50 percent of maximum volume. The online Help Guide is 98 pages long and is well worth reading through as there is so much more information contained in it than what is presented in the rather rudimentary “Reference Guide” that is in the box. The pages are not full of text and diagrams, so it isn't as long as 98 pages implies.
Besides the speaker unit, the ULT FIELD 3 comes with a paper Reference Guide, a paper Limited Warranty pamphlet, the aforementioned shoulder strap, and a 20 inch long charging cord. The included USB-C to USB-C charging cord is very thick and stiff, and does not offer much length limiting your charging locations to where you can safely place the ULT 3 while plugged in. There is no charging adapter included as is the case with just about every rechargeable device nowadays. It is recommended to use a charging adapter that outputs either 5 volts or 9 volts at 3.0 amps. That is the equivalent of 15 to 27 watts, or similar to the same amount that most modern smartphones want for charging. Sony claims a run time of 120 minutes after 10 minutes of charging, but makes no mention (that I could find) of the required adapter output to achieve this. The charging port is under a gasketed cover on the back side of the speaker along with a button to press to check the amount of battery power remaining. The USB-C port for charging also works in reverse, allowing you to charge your smartphone from the ULT 3’s battery. Be advised the output is only 7.5 watts which is way below what a modern smartphone will accept for charging current, so it will take awhile to charge your phone from the speaker.
The Sony ULT FIELD 3 Bluetooth speaker is a stylish and well made product that is at home providing entertainment indoors or in other less than pristine environments and is capable of sloughing off grime and water splashes. Sound quality is subjective, but with the deep bass the ULT 3 is capable of, combined with the crisp highs, just about everyone will be more than pleased with its performance.
