This device has worked great for me, as does both radio and MP3, along with a handful of other things I haven't had time to explore.

I'm coming from a few audiophile devices like the Fiio E-18 and the Cowon J3 etc. with some Grado's, P7's and SE535's. I'm no expert in sound quality but i do know what i like. Here is a quick pro/con breakdown of the unit
Pro's
- Battery Life, one of the longest on the market
- Size, ultra-small light, portable
- strictly music oriented, no flare added no bloated costs
- aptX and LDAC codecs for excellent wireless reproduction
- Descent 64GB internal space
Con's
- Sound Quality, surprisingly uninspired.Much better than an iPod, but still lacking detail and dynamic range. Especially clarity in the higher end and ability to perform high/low at the same time.
- UI is dated and very old school
- No WiiFi
- Proprietary plug so $$$ if you loose it
- plug can also NOT be used for DAC, and you have to buy a separate cable for that so more $$$
- AMP is VERY under powered, its fine for IEMs but any type of headphones and you're out of luck
- Overpriced. This is more like a $100-150 player than a $300 player.

Superb Detail For Lossy (Non-Hi Res) WMA/MP3

I am a firm believer in Sony when it comes to sound quality in MP3 players. I loved my NWZ-E463 for 3 years before I dropped it and killed it.
When replacing it, I figured that the NWZ-380 would be a good replacement. I was wrong. It was a definite step down in sound and screen display, so I returned it to Best Buy. I guess the days of getting high-quality players for $100 are over.
I am a picky musician and audiophile, so I decided to go for the NWZ-A17 after reading many positive reviews.
I was amazed at the high quality playback for typical lossy WMA/MP3 files. The depth of the reproduction is like nothing I've heard before. Complex layered recordings of music suddenly come alive with each layer sounding clear and discrete. I am using (and highly recommend) the Panasonic HJE120 earbuds. Don't let the cheap price fool you...they sound awesome with this player and my old one as well..
A few settings suggestions for Lossy typical WMA/MP3 songs:
Graphic Equalizer: Set a Custom EQ setting that brings the sliders near the top of the range (including the Low Bass Setting). Be unafraid...there's no distortion here.
DS EEX Lossy Upscaling Setting to OFF. Makes Lossy files sound flat.
Try setting the DAnce/Karaoke/Language Setting to <Language Study> I got this tip from another reviewer, and it does add a noticeable increase in separation and spatial quality.
CON - The album art only comes through on 50% of the albums, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. Other reviewers have discussed work-arounds to solve that, so read reviews posted on the net if that's a deal-breaker for you.
Don't hesitate to purchase! The $300 price is worth every penny.
P.S. The Igadgitz leather carrying case is the best protector out there for this model.

Sony had a great opportunity to redeem itself in the MP3 market -and for a while it did, but for the money spent I think I would have preferred a apple product. The unit didn't even come with headphones and you cannot purchase additional insurance! Seems to lose my downloads and additional storage had to be purchased. No consideration for the consumer here.

Better than an iPod

Our household has too many devices to count, Android - iOS, Windows, MAC etc, and with that comes the annoyances of getting music to the devices you want it on.
Lets face it, Itunes really sucks for those of us who just want to manage music collections.
In terms of devices, I really wanted to get a music player with BT so that I could stream to all the speakers in my house (also Sony products).
This Walkman is better than I could have ever imagined, and its perfect for those who fit its niche.
Its not an iPod with apps for the kids. Its not a phone. Its not going to work well with your $5 earbuds from the Target checkout line.
Its dedicated to holding as much music as possible (64gb!) and playing it at the best quality possible.
Its meant for the music lover, but specifically the ones who prefer quality.
Its meant to be paired with equally high-quality headphones (think B&O, B&W, Sony's own high end sets, etc) as they will be required to give you all this player has to offer.
I paired this with my Master & Dynamic MH40 (wired) set and easily downloaded high bit-rate tracks from Google Music onto it (set a download folder automatically and this become dead simple). My ears were BLOWN AWAY.
Then there is the fact that these have BT & NFC - we paired then with a pair of Sony Hi-res wireless headphones via NFC and let me just say that plane rides will never be the same.
Better yet, it also pairs via NFC to my Sony portable speakers (hear.go series) which are also crafted with the hi-res moniker. The little speaker pumps out so much sound that people at my holiday party couldnt believe it WASNT a professional-grade media system in the room.
Its not cheap. To get the best out of it you will be investing money as well. But you're investing into a system that will last you at least a decade, and creating a system that will really bring you pleasure.
To me, Its worth it. Can't go back.

I glad I spent the money on this. Sound quality is amazing, battery last me about a week with moderate use. Plays all my files unlike other players and phones. Ample storage plus sd card expansion. Fm radio tuner is a nice perk also.

Love Walkmans; HUGE Dealbreaker Bluetooth Issue
Posted .

I'm a huge fan of the Sony walkmans, this is my fourth or fifth one now. A lot of the other reviews are on point with my feelings on this particular walkman (long battery life, lightweight, expandable memory(!), I also love that it has a wonderfully cheap FOUR year geek squad plan), but I want to address the number one con about this product:
First, I cannot begin to say how excited I was to find another MP3 player outside Apple that had bluetooth capability. Actually, it was the number one reason I even purchased this one to begin with instead of getting the cheaper ones like I have. Bluetooth devices are how I listen to music.
So imagine my dismay to find out the Walkman has a HUGE FLAW in their Bluetooth capability. The volume control DOES NOT WORK AT ALL with a bluetooth device connected UNLESS your bluetooth device has it's own volume control.
Let me clarify: I have a lot of smaller bluetooth headsets that I like to use at work and NONE of them have volume adjustments on the headset itself, so I'm counting on the Walkman to have some sort of volume control that communicates to the device (like any other bluetooth capable tech on the market....). But no. You can't change the volume on the Walkman. You have to count on a volume control on your bluetooth device. So if you have a bluetooth speaker and want to walk around with the Walkman and change the volume on the speaker with the Walkman controls? You can't. You have to go back to the speaker to use the speaker's volume controls.
Honestly, it almost makes the bluetooth capability useless. As the number one selling point for me, this was the worst disappointment imaginable. And I've looked and looked online everywhere for Sony's solution, and it looks like these products have had issues since 2015 and Sony still haven't solved it. I contacted Sony and of course they had no solutions but try buying another one. I don't need to try another one when I see it's an unresolved issue online everywhere. Lol. Every single one will have this problem. Even if you go onto the Sony website for device help and go to the bluetooth section, it says the Walkman volume change has to be done on the bluetooth device itself, not the Walkman. So disappointing.
If you're looking for a great MP3 player alternative for EVERY OTHER functionality but bluetooth, this device is perfect. But with the bluetooth not working, it's definitely not worth the price. If Sony can fix this problem, I'd happily rescind this poor review. Until then, not worth it for bluetooth users (which - with the way bluetooth technology is the standard for speakers/cars/headphones/etc. - that means pretty much everyone.)

I had thought of purchasing an Ipod touch 128 GB from apple, but am so happy I purchased this instead. I've always been a fan of Sony Walkmans, so decided to give it a chance (being $100 cheaper than the Ipod wasn't bad either). It has 64 GB internal and 128 GB usable via an micro SD card. Plenty of storage for all of my music!!!
