Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with the XBR X850D Series 75" TV's picture quality, ease of use, and vibrant colors. Many appreciate the 4K resolution and find the upscaling capabilities to be excellent, resulting in a great viewing experience even with non-4K content. However, some users have noted issues with the remote control's responsiveness and contrast in dark scenes. While the design is generally praised, a few customers mentioned the TV's weight as a potential drawback.

As I'm writing this review, as of 4/22/2017, Best Buy has also dropped the price of this item by $200. Since my wife and I purchased this item merely days ago, Best Buy fulfilled their promise of refunding us $200 since we are within the return period on their own price drop (doesn't work with competitors after time of sale). If you're looking for a fantastic TV for use in a typical living room, this is it, especially at this price-point. The way to go if you're going 4K is also with some semblance of HDR, and this set certainly has it. Our understanding from the sales associate was that this item has the "mid-range" for HDR, but if you've never had 4K/HDR previously, it won't disappoint (the showroom unit at 65 inches was enough to convince my wife; enough said there!). While there are many nit-pickers out there who are concerned about light bleed and other such things who might be used to spending thousands upon thousands of dollars for a new TV, please don't worry; this unit handles blacks and low-level living room lighting with ease. Further, the tech in the TV does a fantastic job of effectively upscaling whatever picture you give it; I've watched this happen in real time, depending on whether I throw Xfinity HD, Blu-ray or regular DVDs at the TV -- everything comes out much clearer, and 75 inches is simply larger than life. Honestly, it looks like you're looking at an LED wall, because at 75 inches, that's pretty much what this is. Regarding heaviness, yes, I think this TV clocks in at somewhere around 75 lbs; the packaging brings that total to 100 lbs, if I recall. When getting the TV out of the box, since you can't put pressure on the front panel without potentially damaging it, you absolutely must have at least two people (preferably adults who can lift 50 lbs) pick it up out of the box and then put it onto the included stand (if it's not hanging on a wall). Also, since it is so wide and prone to sway if hit, be absolutely sure that its final destination is somewhere that it's not going to be a hit risk; this thing is massive. This unit does does have Android TV installed in it, which it dutifully attempts to setup upon first turning the TV on. You can either delve into this aspect or simply perform the basics to get to where you change input for what you want to see and go on. And if you're like us and have no immediate access to 4K content, simply hook up some way to get to YouTube (we have an Apple TV for this) and search on "4K" or "4K HDR." There are many videos out there that show the potential for this tech -- it'll blow your mind. In conclusion, for ~$2,000 for a 75 inch display, this is the one to get. You can't beat the price for what is an essentially top-of-the-line, one-step-removed from state-of-the-art television. Why my remark on state-of-the-art? Because 4K is so bleeding-edge that you literally won't get on-going 4K programming for a few years, in that 4K is still being finalized on the back-end, and no local broadcast affiliate is going to be switching to the format without millions in sunk costs (it requires equipment replacement, not just a software switch on). So, my recommendation (because we'll probably do the same thing) is to get a fantastic set like this now, and in five years when OLED sets come down in price, use this beast as a secondary TV and feast on OLED :)

    Excellent Giant Screen

I think the 75" Sony 850d is a great TV. I looked at LG, Samsung and Visio also for about a month before buying the Sony. I think the picture is great. The reviewers that say there is light bleeding must have a defective TV because mine has none! The blacks ARE black also, not greenish. BestBuy delivered the TV but my wife and I assembled the stand (which was easy, took about 10 minutes). I think where people are damaging the TV is when they insert the TV into the stand. Sony warns you not to press on the edges of the screen and that can cause light bleed damage unless you are careful to only press against the back of the TV when setting up like we did. Let me say a 75" TV is Heavy and Awkward! Unless two people commit to putting the TV in the stand carefully you can damage it! Pay BestBuy the $50 if you think it might be too heavy for you. After it is in the stand setup is easy by just turning it on and following the instructions. One of the reasons I bought this TV is the small base the stand has compared to the other brands. You might notice that the bases on the other brands are almost the whole width of the TV. Not a factor if you are wall mounting though. I am currently watching a lot of 4K programming on DirecTV. They have the Olympics in 4K and a lot of older IMAX videos in 4K. Plus they have more regular current hit movies in 4K also. I also use a Roku 3 on this TV and it looks great also. My wife and I are very happy with the Sony and the huge 4K picture is awesome. If you have a soundbar like I do that is about 3 inches high you will need a riser that lifts it up that much or the soundbar will block the bottom of the screen. They sell what's called a Sony riser on Amazon and other places for around $40, it will support the TV and lift it up just right to see the full picture.

    Very happy so far

I purchased the TV a week ago....we're very happy considering the size, price, and features......we had the Geek Squad mount the TV on the wall and set it up (worth every penny as they were great). I also got an extended warranty at 25% off with the Geek Squad service.....I had a TV act up after 1 year in the past ( it was a Vizio M65 3D that developed lines just after the 1 year mark, out of warranty); I actually loved that TV, but w/o the extended warranty, it was junk at that point. This 75" Sony 850 has surpassed my expectations so far.....we sit 12' away from straight on, and it looks great! The voice activated remote is pretty cool too.....just name a city or destination from anywhere in the world (don't forget to say 4k as well), and you're there in an instant (via YouTube)! We love the TV and feel comfortable with the price we paid ($2295 during the recent 3 day sale); the BestBuy professionals and Geek Squad guys were courteous and knowledgeable.....we appreciate the service and this fantastic 4k television from Sony! I also have a Sony 4k video camera (AX33)...very happy with that and the amazing 4k video. My only regret is that my father isn't around to see the unbelievable advancements in technology; I remember (I'm 60) our first color TV, and the rotor antenna on the roof used to pull in 3 or 4 channels in a somewhat snowy, distorted, SD signal, as well as the need to send your camera's film out to get developed ( and, let's not forget the 8 track and cassette tapes, VCRs and huge video cameras, soundless home movies under the bright lights, and prehistoric video games, just to name a few)! I consider myself very lucky to live during this level of advancement, and can only wonder what lies ahead in the world of technology!

Yes, I have been drooling over BIG 4K's for quite sometime now. Finally I had a enough excuses to take the plunge. First - My Panasonic 58 inch Plasma was getting "blurry". Well, not really. My eyes are not what they used to be. So I found myself moving closer to the TV to see the smaller print. "Ugh." Second - My son loves to play Mine-craft 4 player mode with friends. Moving closer becomes necessary once again. Third - Wife needed a new Dryer. "Yahtzee!" I did a lot of homework. The most important factor i learned was to get the Biggest Screen you possibly can. Cost did play into this decision so 75 inch was my max. I also wanted a "future proof" TV. features like 4K up-scaling, HDR, Google Play, Netflix, HULU etc. I Chose the Sony over LG & Samsung, because it performs a bit better with Video Games & Live Sports. I Just got the Sony a few days ago. But i can truly say the Sony is ***A W E S O M E*** - For the first time i can SEE what i am watching. I felt like i got a new pair of glasses. Colors are bright and beautiful without looking cartoon-ish. I can read small print from 20 feet away. Granted it has only been a few days but i am thrilled. This model just went ON-SALE so in the end, It was sort of like getting a "Free Dryer" for purchasing a "Blinging-Big-Screen".

Colors are good. The Samsung has more snap. However, I liked the IPS screen because it has better color rendition. Smooth glass surfaces look pretier under the right circumstances, but have more glare and are prone to smudges. the IPS screens offer better color from the sides (and do not need curved screens--you only do that if there are color shifts--a la Samsung--from the sides). The up converter by Sony is better (very good indeed), as noted by many reviewers. I checked all of this before my purchase. There is some 4 k out there but more HD. Do yourself a favor. Stores show you only 4k.
