Hi BenjamenP, It's wonderful to hear that the audio and battery life have been great for your outdoor bonfires. While it might not be as loud as you initially expected, the sound quality and endurance certainly seem to make it a hit. The maximum sound volume for playing music depends on whether the speaker is running on power from the connected AC outlet or from the rechargeable built-in battery. This, however, does not indicate a malfunction. To play music louder, connect the speaker to an AC outlet. The XV500 features 3 sound effects depending on your needs (STAMINA, MEGA BASS, and LIVE SOUND). Enjoy your nights out and thanks for choosing Sony. -Jess
