This edition to the soul caliber series had a good enough plot, but the play action feels years behind today's technology.

This is a decent "story telling button presser fighting game. The expanded character inventory is cool. I enjoy the way that characters show their "battle-damage" by missing items of armor and/or clothing. I also enjoy the extensive character creation menus and all the options therein.

Excellent purchase as preowned title. Manual looked good as new if not actually new and no scratches on disc.
As for game, if you liked previous Soul Calibur games you will enjoy this one. Don't expect anything revolutionary or really new though.

I was disappointed with the game, really. It was too easy to unlock everything. The character roster is so small compared to that of SC IV or SC III. Talim, Seong Mina, Yun Song, Rock, Zasalamel, and Amy are all gone, which was very disappointing. They also included three mimic characters, when one would have been enough, and Omega Pyrra who is just a copy of normal Pyrrah. She could have been just a costume edit. I honestly think, they could have saved room on the roster by including a "!" option like SC III had or a "Star" option like in SC IV, to include all the extra characters. SC IV also had fun achivements to earn. This game, does not. The story mode literally is a joke. If the player loses, they can retry at a lower difficulty. It also looked... cheap. The story board cut scenes with voice audio over them is a nice step up from IV's landscape view and poof on to the next fight. As for the artificial intelligence (Ai) of the game, even the "Easy" mode can be hard at times. It's almost as if the Ai forgets it is on Easy, and the enemy with go all out using Critical Edges ( their super moves) and attacks quite viciously. In addition, you have to fight each enemy three times to win, instead of the traditional two times. It's during the third fight when the Ai tends to forget it's on Easy or Normal and goes berserk. This spike in difficultly could be to simulate a "I don't want to die" response. On to the character creation. It was very indepth compare to SC IV and SC III. I bought those games for that feature alone. However, the voices are just... I think they tried using some kind of experimental voice changing software. In SC IV, the voices were changed by speeding up or slowing down voices slightly, which worked fine, but it SC V, no matter what you do, the voices just have this terrible echo, forcing you to use the voice's default settings.

The best online architecture in a fighting game.

SC5 is a fighting game that thankfully focuses on the competitive nature of the genre and doesn't waste time on single player fluff modes. If you buy fighting games to play alone, you won't have fun here. If you buy them to play with other people either online or in person, it's the best SoulCalibur since #2 and has the most stable online play of any fighting game this console generation. Character creation mode is extremely good and offers a great deal more options than 3 or 4's.

I actually really enjoy playing this game. The characters have much more definition (compared to Soul Calibur IV on XBOX). The online game matching seems to work pretty well too.
The story line is based on one character only, Patroklis. Although it was better than SC IV, it can be beaten relatively easy in a few hours (22 episodes/levels).
I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of fighting games, because the fighting is pretty enjoyable.
That being said, it seems to be a "dumbed down" version of SC IV, as they removed a lot of the features I liked.
- There are a good amount of extra equipment and clothes you can use to create cutom characters, but equiping these items SEEMS to have no effect on characters strengths or weaknesses. In SC IV, the game explictly made (though a point system) wearing chain mail better defenses versus wearing a cotton outfit only. Similarly, carrying a larger weapon would deliver more damage to the opponent, but would make your character slower. In THIS game, wearing a leather coat is the same was wearing underwear only. I am baffled why they took out the distinction.
- SC IV allowed you to earn gold for each battle won. Using this gold, you could buy extra clothing or weapons AND SPECIAL MAGIC/MOVES that would make your character stronger (based on the above). This gave you something to play for, and you had to decide what equipment for which characters you wanted to purchase. With THIS game, you unlock new clothing and equipment the more you play. The problem is, you have no idea (or quantity of) the items that you can unlock. They just are mysteriously given as you win battles. I prefered earning the gold, and choosing what equipment I wanted for which characters.
- There is only a universal "Player Level" number. The more you play, the more you number goes up. Very generic, and is unclear what that actually means. In SC IV, the player number was individual to each game character, and was not universal to every character. If you wanted to improve one character, you needed to use them. Characters left un played, would never improve, which makes sense to me.
- They took out the Tower of Lost Souls. It was a bonus single player challenge in which you battled to get up the tower, and then down the tower. Although I thought it was a bit long challenge (39 levels I think), I considered it a bonus challenge.
-They took out single player "tag team" levels. Select 2 or more characters and play one or all of them (one at a time) based on who you were fighting.
- CPU opponents seem to fall into two dificullty levels. Moderate and Very Hard. There doesnt seem to be much in between. In story mode, it is relatively easy until level 18, which the challenge instantly becomes much much harder.
- As rewards for winning battles, they added around 250 "tittles" you can win, such as "Creation is Fun", or "Use the Stick". Huh? Who really cares about 250 titles. 50, ok, but I would rather get more equiment or abilities than more "titles"
- Its trivial, but I always enjoyed the narating part of Soul Calibur. They person that narates this game has a very weak voice. At the title screen, he says "Soul Caliber.... 5????". It sounds like he is unsure which game he is narating. Very poor for a fighting game. His naration fails at various points in the game as well.

Great 3D fighting game!

This is another outstanding installment in one of the best 3D fighting series around (this and Tekken are the two great series in 3D fighting in my opinion).
The graphics in Soul Calibur V are brilliant, boasting deep, vibrant colors and a high level of detail and clarity in all images. Both characters and backgrounds look great. The animation is fluid and natural looking. Soul Calibur continues to have some of the best graphics in any fighting series.
The gameplay feels better than in SC IV. I am able to pull of moves and combos easier than in earlier installments of the SC series. The gameplay in SC was always great, but SC V makes it better!
The Original Japanese voice cast does a better job as the characters than the English dub cast, but my only real complaint is that some characters I really liked from Soul Calibur IV are missing in acion! Particularly these three: Soung-Mina, Talim and Yueng-Sung. I like the new characters, but I also liked these classic characters. If Namco were to make these characters available as a PSN download (which I don't see any reason not to#, SC V would be perfect.
If anyone from Namco is reading this, please make these characters available as DLC! I will defenitely buy them either individually or as a set #an SC IV character set would be great).

Great for groups but avoid single player

The game has become a regular in situations where multiple players are involved but I found that the content devised for single player was completed quickly and with minimal difficulty. The Create A Soul portion of the game has extended the replay value but there is little to return to for Story and Arcade modes. The visuals and sounds are among the best found in fighting games of today. Online modes work better than most other fighting games, little to no lag.

Another fine entry for the Soul Calibur series. Great fighting game and more than just a button masher. If you take the time and learn the moves it becomes like a game of chess with you opponent . Would like to have seen all the old guest characters as unlockable plus some new ones but I guess they have to save something for the DLC.

The game is average. I feel like the battle system kind of lag and its not very smooth. Previous versions of this game were way better.
