Great Sound, Above-Average Noise Cancelling
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have tested and owned several Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with my dad. When the Sony XWH-1000XM3 came out, they performed beautifully. It was a premium product that commanded a premium price tag which meant that I didn't feel comfortable using them at the office. (About 18 months ago, I bought a pair of Sony WH-CH700N on a Black Friday sale for about $100 for my dad to use at work. The Active Noise Cancellation on those Sony headphones was disappointing. While it did cancel some of the noise, a lot of mid-range noise was still coming through. The Bass was also lackluster. A few months later we got a chance to purchase the Monoprice SonicSolace for about $30. We were actually quite impressed with the sound performance and the noise cancellation was quite a bit better than the Sony CH700N. The SonicSolace's main problem was the battery life for 8 hours with Active Noise Cancelling on. Stepping into the ring, the Anker Soundcore Life Tune XR headphones. I have enjoyed these headphones thus far. In the box, you get a quick start guide, a safety information pamphlet and a zippered oval carry case. There are no extra pockets like you would find in a Bose carry case. Inside the carry case, you will find some extra foam padding to keep the headphones safe, the headphones, a small drawstring bag that contains an audio cable and a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and finally a small sewn in tag that helps you figure out how to lay the headphones back into the case properly. These Anker headphones are about 30 grams heavier than my Bose QC35 headphones. I would still consider them lightweight and I could not tell a weight difference when they were on my head. The headband is built on a thin piece of metal which gives nice flexibility and delivers nice pressure on my head. On the left headphone, there are two buttons, one is the combination Power and Bluetooth button, the second controls Noise Cancellation Modes. There is also a USB-C port for charging. On the right headphone, there is Volume Up and Down buttons and a play/pause button and an audio port. The right headphone also has a touch control to shift into Transparency Mode and back. This is to toggle noise cancellation if you need to temporarily converse with someone. If you have an Android phone with NFC, you can tap your phone to the right headphone for pairing. Battery life is an impressive 60 hours of playtime, but 40 hours with Noise Cancellation on. Pairing to my phone was easy. The NFC feature helped me to pair to my phone quickly. Sound was impressive out of the box. The headphones are set up with Soundcore Signature audio profile, by default, which give a nice, clear treble and bass was nice and emphasized. The bass isn't going to kick you in the head, but its presence is known and I believe it's slightly stronger than my Bose QC35 headphones. There were many other audio profiles that I tried, such as the bass boost, but I came back to the Soundcore Signature profile. I connected these headphones to my PC via Bluetooth and wore them for several hours. They are very comfortable on my head. The wireless range is impressive. I could walk to the other side of my house with a few walls in between and I didn't drop a single note. Noise cancelling is better than the Sony CH700N. Low thrums and highs are gone, but other conversations are only muffled. The microphones work well in a phone call. The other person couldn't tell I was on a headset, but I felt a little isolated with the noise cancelling on, which I feel is normal. There were two aspects that disappointed me with these Anker headphones. First is the power on/off control. To turn on and off, you need to hold the button a few seconds until the LED indicator changes or, if you have the headphones on, wait until you hear an audio prompt, the quick start guide indicates a time of 3 seconds, I found that to turn on may be about 3 seconds, but to turn off is more like 6 seconds. I much prefer Bose's implementation with a slide switch with a Bluetooth toggle. The second aspect is that you cannot charge and listen via Bluetooth at the same time. This disappointed me greatly. If I am running low on battery, I want the ability to charge while I'm still listening so have less interruptions. As soon as you plug in the USB-C power, Bluetooth and noise cancellation shut off. The only solution I've found for continued listening while charging is to use an audio cable. Just make sure you find long enough power and audio cords to do your work comfortably. When you consider that the battery life is 40-60 hours, charging and playing isn't going to affect me as much as my previous headphones. Also, with a 5 minute charge providing up to 4 hours of playtime means that I can stretch out my listening while getting up to get a snack. When my dad's Monoprice SonicSolace headphones stop holding a charge, I would have no problems upgrading him to these Anker Soundcore Life Tune XR headphones. Battery life is several times longer, noise cancellation is better and they easily beat the Sony CH700N that I got for him previously. For the price, I wouldn't hesitate to bring these Anker headphones to the office and leaving them in my drawer. These headphones are a solid performer.

A maybe purchase
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These might be good as a basic pair of earphones, just not for me. They were easy to connect and easy to use. The sound was better on BT and not great on aux. They had a wonky fit when wearing them.
