I got this when it was on sale for $30, I'd have paid double that and been happy but definitely not considered it at full retail price.
The product itself is fairly basic in regards to what it can do compared to modern "smart" speakers (Google Home, Alexa, Homepod, etc.) which it isn't trying to be but it definitely could have crossed into that segment had they allowed, and to a kid that isn't going to matter. The fact it connects to WiFi and couldn't have simply had a service implemented if you chose, is a major downside for me. I understand it was not intended for that to be secure for kids and not collect data, so it does a good job at accomplishing that as the content is all stored internally (thus limiting the programming it has access to). I do think they could have given the choice to connect it to Google or another service through the app and offer much greater functionality...being able to ask Spidey to control home devices and such that I'm happy asking Google already and allowing to receive my data, would have been fine.
The things it can do are fun and entertaining for the kids for a bit but often no response because my toddlers have already moved on beyond the simple options here, voice recognition is ok (a lot of repeat "Hey Spider-Man"...retry, retry, ok nvm just press the front button), and the app works well enough although a bit vague for young kids.
The build quality is top notch and the only complaints I'd have about that is the fact it's limited to only the eyes doing any response. If they had any other auto-movement to go along with the eyes LEDs and IR sensor, rather than just manual arm movement, it'd have seemed much more interactive.
As is, it's a great concept that lacks in quite a few areas outside of simple stories/responses in a CYOA kind of way, and has some frustrations for kids (either in the voice recognition or having to use the app).
It's first and foremost a toy, and maybe that's where the disappointment comes in because it isn't intended to be a full smart-product, yet it would appear to have that functionality with voice response so when kids have seen and used other products that this doesn't compete with, it seems limiting to them or frustrating.
For the full retail price, it would have been a bad value in my eyes, but it looks great and definitely has a charm to it so if you can get it on sale it's fun with tempered expectations.

It's a good toy for my son to interact with. He enjoys just listening to Spider-man talk. A minor con is that you need to say specific words for Spidey to respond back to you.
not a con, but sometimes I'd forget he is turned on, and would just say something random in the dark late at night. Definitely woke me up from being half asleep when I am getting a glass of water.
I personally feel that he isn't worth anything over $100, but if you can get it for a discounted price then yes go for it.

I've always had faith in Sphero products. First with BB-8 and then the mini. Spiderman was on sale and I thought how could I go wrong with the purchase. Well Spidey is not like the other products, he doesn't move, just talks and talks and talks. I lost interest after about an hour. The only cool thing is the LED eyes and the room alarm.

The price dropped which made my decision to buy that much easier. Fun little device but keep your expectations tempered.. doesn’t do a hack of a lot other than wink and give you some generic line. Reacts to your voice pretty quickly but needs some added features and improvements.. could be great but right now just alright. Lowered price made it worthwhile.

Super Cool for any Spidey Fan - Kid or Adult

I'm a 44 year old man, but also a collector of all things Spider-Man as he has been my favorite super hero since I was a kid and had Spiderman Underoos. This Sphero Spider-Man definitely isn't perfect - it would be better if it had always listening and could be triggered by his name and would be a LOT cooler if it had something like a way to connect and send commands to Alexa for home automation. But alas, this is just a really cool TOY, not a complex smart assistant. And as a toy it is pretty awesome. The LCD eyes and perfect Spidey voice are really what make this. [Side note: My first one had an issue with the eyes where whenever they were supposed to be wide-opened white - their screens were garbled with white/black lines - I had to return it and get a second one which works fine.]
He doesn't always hear commands correctly - again, wish they had connected him to Amazon or Google for speech recognition - would have been much better - but overall he gets things right enough to be able to have fun. Since I'm an adult and since he isn't a "smart assistant" I don't spend a lot of time interacting with him the way a kid likely would. I leave him on guard mode to get funny phrases when he detects motion in the office and occasionally I'll have him tell me a joke or a story. It's definitely a fun toy. Just keep in mind it is a TOY and is only somewhat smart.

As a huge life long spider man fan I wanted this instantly when it was announced. I patiently waited for a sale. I was very please with the depth of information this item has with the app you’ll need to download. The only downside is he doesn’t move at all, unlike the phenomenal Lightning McQueen version from Sphero. Nonetheless, I would recommend to any fan of spider man, but mostly for children in there early teens. Great interaction fun.

This toy is incredible, as was the price! It’s interactive and funny, and engaging for older kids as well as younger. In fact, my teenage son likes his own so much that he convinced me to order one as a baptism gift for my Godson. It was a hit! :)

I love Spidy, is there a need to say more? This one is an awesome interactive product. Only reason it doesn't get 5 star is because its software makes it obsolete. I am hoping that there will be more apps taking advantage of this product.

If you are a Spiderman fan, this is a must have toy. Interactive and smart, this toy could be your constant quirky companion while working on the computer. Would've been 5 stars if it squirts spiderweb and could move its arms. :)

Cool little toy. Kinda limited in what it do. I wouldn't have bought it unless it was on sale for the really low price I got it at. Might make a good alarm clock for a kids room.

My 3 year old daughter is obsessed with spiderman. She loves this thing. Its ability to hear you isn’t great and it’s extremely limited as far as variety goes but if you can get it on sale it’s pretty cute.

Can be carried around like a toy. It is a bit durable but not toddler durable. It is a cute toy for young and old to enjoy. You can talk to it, not like google or amazon. But you can interact with it once you press his chest. And his eyes are the best feature that gives it emotions.

Got it when it was on sale. I know the Sphero line of toys well and this was not my top pick but for the price, it was fun for awhile and kind of cool to have on my desk at work.

I need to write this review in the name of my 7yrs old who believes Spiderman is the best superhero. The toy arrived in a very nice package that attracted his attention because after being open, few hours of activity started (nice detail the battery arrived charged).
The toy is made in a sturdy and quality/good looking texture that facilitates his small hands to keep and play with it.
The first step (and more stressful for him because he was just a spectator while the dad was doing everything) is clearly downloading the app in the phone where the basic setup need to be done (username, nickname for the toy sidekick, superpowers…).
The toy interacts with the kid after pressing the button, available options to interact: he can tell jokes, ask questions to the kid and narrate histories. In my opinion, considering the interactivity, this is the coolest part because he has a story mode feature where he will take the kid through a crime fighting scene and ask for kids help by jumping or shaking the toy.
Two additional features that my son loves are: the “guard mode” where the toy’s movement detector reacts when there is movement around him (perfect surveyor, for sleeping time) and the alarm.
Couple of items to keep in mind: This toy is not reacting to the voice but to the button so could be disappointing for oldest kids or young adults but doesn’t seem to bother my son. This toy has a more interactive playing time if some of the activities are managed by the app, so the kid could be using your phone or ipad (more screen time and a reson for one of the starts in the rating). This toy is no intended to be an action toy, only arms are movable.
I wrote this feedback after 5 days playing, I don’t know for how long the toy will keep his attention but the fact that the histories are downloadable from the web looks a promising start.
