Movie and 4K content review - Excellent

I am a Trekkie and you might think that I gave this a 5-star rating just because of that. Well, that is not the case. I am rating the movie AND the 4k content as a package. For those of you who read my reviews, I focus more on the technical performance of the movie because this is a 4k movie review and I love excellent video presentations. What I absolutely love about this movie is that it switches between full screen and widescreen modes. The producer uses full screen where there is reason to focus in on something (and who cares about what is on the peripheral), otherwise, they use wide screen. What this does is it allows you to frequently enjoy the entire real estate of your TV in glorious 4k - and it's gorgeous! The 4k presentation is beautiful, especially at the beginning when you watch the natives chasing Kirk and McCoy. The HDR is vibrant and the colors beautiful and there isn't any noise in the video. The movie theme itself is the best yet of the new Star Trek movies (even over the recent "Star Trek Beyond", in my opinion). A movie that is beautifully presented with today's 4k and HDR technology - pick it up!

Where Just About Everyone Has Gone By Now

Personally, I enjoyed this movie because I'm not a purist who believes there "can only be one Star Trek" (grow up people, every property is open to interpretation; if you don't like it, don't watch it). I AM a fan of the original series. Even have it on Blu-Ray, along with all the movies. So, watching the shout-outs the a lot of the original material was pretty enjoyable. As far as I'm concerned, they were honoring it by even mentioning it. Despite that, it does seem to me that by constantly using Spock as a "Deus Ex Machina" for these movies seems a bit trite. They're basically saying they can't find a good resolution without referring to him for help, which does seem a bit insulting to the characters they're supposed to be portraying. I'm sure there are people that will tear this newer franchise apart. But, these are probably the same people that hold the original series to an impossible standard when, let's face it, that series had an INSANE amount of plot holes and inconsistencies. Watch it for entertainment value. Don't try to overthink it. Enjoy it for the little in-jokes and one-liners, the special effects or just the pretty actors. Whatever floats your boat. It's not Oscar material. But, it is great fun if you'll let it be.

Good action, but too much of a knock-off of TWOK

Star Trek Into Darkness reunites the crew of the Enterprise... in the alternate timeline... to re-enact what most consider to be the best of the Star Trek movies, The Wrath of Kahn. There are obviously major plot differences, but the resemblance to TWOK is very apparent. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. The Best Buy "Exclusive" online content was a nightmare. I went back and forth with CinemaNow complaining because it would never finish downloading to my Western Digital Player. They blamed the player's firmware, the hard drive, and everything else, until they finally apologized and said the extras had been removed from their service by the production company - even though Best Buy is still selling the same package I bought, with the same exclusive content. I was able to view the exclusive content on my PC, just not save it onto my WD Play device. CinemaNow compensated me by giving me a code to download any movie of my choice. The first movie I chose also had issues, though. The next movie worked fine after the CinemaNow tech support ran the code manually onto my account. Bottom line: The movie is definitely enjoyable for what it is - another trip to the Trek alternate universe. The "extras" are nothing special, though.

This is probably my favorite Star Trek movie in the collection, and I enjoyed them all. Excellent plot, very action-packed, kept me engaged and enthralled at all times. The new cast has definitely grown on me. Haven't watched the Special Features yet, but there are many and they sound exciting. Blu-ray disc package also came bundled with a DVD of the Feature Film, as well as UltraViolet and iTunes digital copy. I haven't downloaded the DC yet, so I don't know if you only get one choice (typically they only allow one or the other, so choose the one you want most first). Package also included a BestBuy CinemaNow 30 minute exclusive that I have not yet seen. I would have preferred that this content be included as an additional bonus DVD (as BestBuy had done with past Star Trek series packages), especially since I'm not a CinemaNow customer (so I'm not sure what it all entails, but will soon find out) and it's only accessible till March 2014.

Great with HDR Player/TV & Dolby Atmost Surround

This is a great movie made even better by the use of 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos Surround. To really get the benefits of this disc you'll have to have a 4K HDR Blu-Ray Player (MOST 4K players are NOT HDR - there are only 5 or so of those available currently) as well as a TV capable of HDR. Again, most 4K TV's are NOT HDR TV's. In order to get the advantage of Dolby Atmos sound you'd have to have a Receiver capable of Dolby Atmos and a Dolby Atmos Speaker setup. If you just have a 4K Player and 4K TV but not HDR, you won't notice that much difference than the standard Blu-Ray but there will be some. HDR and Dolby Atmos are what really make this specific disc set better than the normal Blu-Ray. Highly recommended if you got the right equipment - excellent use of sight and sound!

Star Trek Into Darkness was a good follow up to the first film in this franchise reboot. This film had just as much entertainment value as the first one, despite lacking in creativity and originality compared to the first. Some may have a problem with Cumberbatch as Khan, but I thought he was quite good. The UHD presentation was a solid upgrade compared to the standard SDR blu-ray. The notable addition of the IMAX sequences was truly appreciated, especially with the increased resolution and dynamics offered from UHD. The varying aspect ratio was something I really looked forward to because I knew that it only meant an increase in picture fidelity due to the IMAX camera. This was a worthwhile upgrade to from the standard Blu-ray.

I base my movie reviews on whether or not I enjoyed the movie - I don't pick them a part for minor issues. That being said, I really did enjoy this movie. Yes, the special effects are very cool, but I think this plays second to the story. The story is what kept me watching. To see the Star Trek universe (I was never a big fan of the original series) with familiar characters turned around a bit is refreshing. Reimagining Khan worked well - I was worried since The Wrath of Khan was my favorite of the original movies by far - within the framework of the story. I like the JJ Abrams has made the changes he has to the franchise. It makes the newer movies much more enjoyable to non Star Trek fans. If you enjoy a good science fiction movie you will like this one. It doesn't matter if you're a Star Trek fan or not.

Got more than I expected this time. Got a limited edition giftset. Not only did I get Star Trek Into Darkness movie in Steel Book packaging But I got a Villain ship toboot. I can keep this unopened and give to one of my grandkids but it could be worth something some day. I will have to get another copy of the movie to go with my collection of Star Trek movies, original and new series. Outstanding deal.

Let me just say this first, too much lens flare. Now that's out if the way,STID is a fun action packed film, with a great cast and a terrific villain in Khan, in a great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. Still, was disappointed that Abrams lied about it being not like Wrath of Khan, but at least this film is great! The picture and audio quality is top of the line demo material, and a 3D release that is among the better up conversion s out there, and great sound field to get lost in for days. The extras, on the other hand, were botched from the get go, with different stores getting exclusives that was a cheap ploy to get us to buy every version to get everything. This BBY exclusive has some nice featurettes, and the standard bluray release also has some nice featurettes, but you had to buy a version from target for a bonus disc of featurettes, an Xbox live version for some deleted scenes and a featurette or two and an iTunes version for the commentary. Thank God the Compendium set includes almost everything from those releases except the Xbox Live material.

-SPOILER ALERT!-Proceed at your own risk. In many ways Into Darkness is an alternate reality version of Star Trek II Wrath of Khan. I own both films and although I prefer Wrath of Khan (which I highly recommend) Into Darkness still belongs in every Star Trek library (along with J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2009). Speaking of which, I highly recommend watching both Star Trek II Wrath of Khan and Star Trek 2009 first to fully appreciate the character and plot development of Into Darkness. For the dedicated Star Trek fan, Into Darkness may appear to have too much predictability in its plot development having seen many such elements and devices in previous Star Trek films/episodes. On the other hand, it is still J.J. Abrams and Star Trek and that means ENTERTAINMENT!

If you're a serious fan of Star Trek and dress up for comic con, can speak Klingon, and know what the current federation star date is.... You probably had your own notions about this movie weeks before it came out. For the rest of us, this movie introduces you to a familiar character that is almost as famous as Kirk, a man named Khan. The plot twist in this movie is awesome if you haven't seen the Star Trek movies but if you have, you might find yourself asking, "really jj Abrams?, that's what you decided to do? Alright but try harder with the next movie" either way I still found it greatly entertaining because I choose to be entertained rather than get hung up on writing inadequacy ( got a lot of practice with the expendables series)

I loved this movie. I thought since JJ Abrams created an alternate Star Trek reality with the first Star Trek movie, then it was only natural for there to be another entry with this villain. It was smart, action packed and totally worth it. Those who feel Mr. Abrams treads on holy territory need to get over it. He took a familiar story and character and brought it to life for a new generation. If you are frozen in the past well I know that movie is on BluRay you can go ahead and buy that and enjoy it to your hearts content. For those who want a new take on a familiar villain I recommend this. Do not get me wrong I LOVE the original too. I just am not as closed minded to remakes and/or reboots. I love seeing another persons interpretation of the source material.

This is the second purchase of this film for me, I bought it because it was offered in 3-D for $10, with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to review the movie, but the 3-D. I really enjoyed it. I've read that the 3-D was an afterthought. I have a hard time believing this, just because the way it was filmed. To me, the image popped off the screen, or rather into a window, because most 3-D really should be viewed as a window looking in, not the other way around. Either way I thought the conversion worked very well and I'm glad I repurchased this. So for those of you who are looking to purchase a 3-D film, I would recommend this.

Please Best Buy next time be more responsible and look at your products before sending it out. If it’s damaged then it’s common sense to replace the ones that are damage and send out ones that are in good condition. Stop being irresponsible and lazy because if the tables was turned and someone send you something that was messed up then you would be angry. Be more responsible

This was a fantastic reboot of one of the original stories. The cast work SO well as the characters they're intended to play but with enough here-and-now that they work perfectly. The addition of Benedict Cumberbatch in this film made it for me. I think he's a wonderful actor and played his role exquisitely in the film. Would have liked a little more back story since this is a reboot and not something that people should be expected to know the story going in. I don't often watch movies more than once or twice after I buy them, but this is one of those exceptions. I was raised on the original series and grew up during TNG. I LOVE Star Trek and this was a quality tribute to what it is at it's core.

The BR is a great transfer to an already great film. JJ's take on the Trek-verse continues its hit streak with another great take on existing mythology. Without spoilers, Benedict Cumberbatch has become the best villain in existing Trek canon and all the while the writers pay out little tidbits and shoutouts to the fans, keeping the action fast-paced, the story tight, and the viewer on the edge of their seat. The cast from the previous movie has returned and appear much more settled in their roles this time around. The CG is great, but not overwhelming. An overall great time. I've been a fans since TOS and this is handily the best film in the Trek series yet. Grab it if you haven't already.

I'm well aware that people were a little, upset, over how the villain was handled for this Star Trek. I'm not going to join in the debate though. What I didn't like about this Star Trek was that the trailers implied that there would be spectacular space battles to be waged. While it did happen, it did not occur the way I expected. Though the main plot involved the Enterprise tracking down a criminal named John Harrison, who launches a one-man war against Starfleet, the movie was very much about James Kirk, someone who became Captain of the Enterprise very quickly, but still has much to learn. The dynamic between him and Spock is very different than in the original timeline. Spock is an officer who believes that following regulations is too important, but Kirk will gladly toss the rulebook aside to do what's right. The action, cinematography, and score is all good, but I felt like it could've been different. They could've done more.

These guys have been favorites since Spock and Kirk first hit TV! The first movie was so wonderful I was afraid the 2nd might not be worthy BUT there was nothing to worry about. This movie is cleverly written and has so many little nods to the original series but you don't have to be an original fan to thoroughly enjoy it. Going back and changing history has opened up possibilities for many more sequels and I can't wait! What I loved most about the original series was the great chemistry among them - Spock, Kirk and Bones - and they continue to develop that so well. The effects are spectacular, the action fast-paced and continuous. Buckle up and enjoy!

J.J. Abrams delivered an explosive action thriller that takes 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

I enjoyed the first Star Trek reboot by JJ Abrams a few years ago. I was eagerly anticipating the sequel but as most do with sequels, I had reservations that this one may not live up to the high bar previously set. Fortunately, I was wrong. This movie does the original series and movies a great homage while not being simply a remake. It is refreshing to see this franchise back on the big screen with a talented cast and crew of film makers that want quality as much as fans yet still want to make a fun and entertaining movie. It is such a great movie that my new teenager appreciates it for the sci-fi aspect, action, and story telling.
