I am a huge Star Trek fan of all of the series spinoffs as well as the Original series. This movie was very well received when it was released to theaters. When it came to DVD, it contained extra footage not seen in the theatrical release, and that was what made it a very boring film to watch. When the Blu-ray title was announced the first thing I looked at was the running time, and I found that they had not included the extended version on this release. On a grand scale the movie is an excuse to take us on a tour of the new version of the Enterprise, while the understory is about a lost satellite. If you are a fan of Star Trek, no collection would be complete without this film.

About the best thing that can be said about the first Trek movie was the soundtrack was memorable (Ilia's Theme and the Klingon theme being noteworthy) and the special effects were a leap forward from the series. However, the movie itself was at least 20 minutes too long with far too much time spent admiring the Enterprise in space dock. The Starfleet uniforms were sorely out of place. But we get to see the original crew of Enterprise reunited for later (and better)adventures.

This is the first Star Trek movie. It is one of the best in my opinion, because it reunites the crew which starts a series of movies. The movie takes place several years after the original television series. This bluray looks good even by today's standards. The special effects are great to look at. And the sound is quality too. This disc comes with some extras too. I have not viewed the extras. It looks like the usual audio commentary with some documentaries too. If you are a Trekkie and want some more Trek this is a no brainer unless you buy the box set which is a lot cheaper than collecting the movies individually. Either way you are in for a treat!

Looks like the only problem was shipping via USPS, it was filled promptly but spent over 2 weeks at the central facility in Kentucky (?) before being sent on. Arrived in good shape.

I loved this movie. While I don't consider myself a "Trekkie" I am a Star Trek fan and I have watched and own all of the original movies except the "The Motion Picture". I enjoyed the new timeline of the new series but was able to find the original story and had fun finding the "Kahn-isms". If you've never watch the originals you'll still enjoy the movie. The plot line, characters, non-stop action, and special effects keep even a non Trekkie engaged.

There was great anticipation before Star Trek was originally released as a feature film. I mean, think about it, how many TV shows were released as feature films before this movie??
While the plot is admittedly weak, this film succeeded on many levels. It is appreciated by the Star Trek fans like a reunion with old friends.
Recommended.

This is one of my favorite Star Trek movies of all time. The epic "sci-fi" feel of the movie, along with the return of the original series crew after many years is an absolute hit.

I remember waiting in a long line to see this movie the first day it was released. And I remember how disappointed I was then. This blu-ray reminds me of that long-forgotten disappointment!

Star Trek's 'rebirth'

As I'm sure we all now, Star Trek was actually set to be a new series in the 70's, entitled Star Trek: Phase II with all the original cast, sans Leonard Nimoy.
However, the success of Star Wars made every studio in Hollywood reach for a piece of the intergalatic pie.
Paramount, however, stepped back and realized that they didn't need to create a new sci-fi franchise to compete with Star Wars like those other guys did, because they had one already-Star Trek.
As a result, plans for Phase II were scrapped at the 11th hour and a script for that show was developed for the movie-with the original cast including Nimoy(A sidenote-two other Phase II scripts were later revamped as two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation).
Now, as to the film itself...
Like Star Wars and its imitators, there are great SFX and a great music score(which itself became the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation).
As with the imitators of Lucas's opus, though, those assets seem to be at the expense of exciting drama.
As many have noted over the years, the film moves too slowly in some parts(was Kirk and Scotty circling the Enterprise in the shuttle really a necessary sequence?).
Still, the film attempts to address cosmic issues in a 2001 vein are somewhat interesting. The opening sequences with the Klingons and the Vulcans are also first rate.
The reissue of the film on DVD a few years ago, I thought, made the film better. For instance, I love how the moment where Decker and Ilia exchange smiles on the bridge was moved to another point in the film.
My only complaint about the reissue is the redo of some of the sound effects, most notably the emergency alert sirens. They just seemed to sound more goosebump-inducing in their original track.
Despite being called a sleeping pill by some, the delight of seeing the original crew reunited was enough for this film to make a nice amount of money.

hey this film looks good, has a cool plot, and ties in the original series w/several back stories w/certain characters. I bet if this was judged as just a "sci-fi" film w/o connection to Trek it would be lauded right up there w/2001, Planet Of The Apes, Blade Runner, etc.
the climax is spellbinding and has nice F/X w/o overkilling like modern CGI does way too often.
watch w/o prejudice and you'll savor this like Romulan ale!

A great first film in the Star Trek series, it brings the grandeur of Star Trek to the big screen. A friend thought it was a bit slow, and I suppose it is compared with the newest Star Trek films, but it is truly a great film regardless! Watch the whole series, but start from the beginning with this one.
