Compared to other versions of lightsaber toys, this has more options. The adventures when paired with a phone are entertaining to watch. Will have to get another for duels. One star loss for it likes to unpair itself from the app a lot for no reason.

OK I'm a little older, I remember seeing Star Wars Epidode 3 when it first came out in the theater. And for as long I've wanted to use a Light Saber. So when I saw that the Star Wars - Lightsaber Academy Interactive Battle Lightsaber offered training by different Jedi Masters on both the light and dark side I grabbed one.
First thing to do is download the app. The app keeps track of your training and with which Master.
The higher you progress the more that's added via the app. More voices. More skill sets. You can train or compete. I left competing to the kids.
If you have a Star Wars fan in your home this is a nice add for under the tree this holiday season.
The only 2 things that I didn't like was that the instructions were a little ambiguous and the 3 AAA batteries weren't included.
Cheers All!!

This interactive lightsaber is a fun toy even without the included "Lightsaber Academy" app, with above average lighting and sound effects that are not only true to the movie, but match your movements. A suite of sensors in the handle track your motion with the lightsaber and trigger authentic sound and light effects as you swing (quickly or slowly) and when hitting other objects. Younger Star Wars fans will no doubt have fun battling each other and enjoying the lights and sounds of battle even without the included Lightsaber Academy app. Just remember that you'd need two of these for such battles since only one saber comes in the package.
The app is divided into training options and interactive battles. Users can select from a range of characters including Luke, Rey, Vader, etc. The app runs on Android or iOS devices (we tried on both and had no issues) and connects to the lightsaber via Bluetooth. In my experience the connection has been very reliable. Obviously this means that for kids to fully utilize this toy they need access to a supported tablet or smartphone.
The training mode shows moves performed by a character on screen and invites the user to mimic the move. They are graded on how closely the sensors show that they followed the attack pattern. I found the animations a little hard to follow and duplicate, but was eventually able to get a passing grade on a few of them. Players can progress through increasingly complex moves as they increase their score and "force power" and play minigames that utilize the various skills learned.
The battle mode allows players to play against an AI character or a friend. I had only one saber so couldn't try the "play a friend" option, but the AI battle was a little disappointing. It's essentially a rock-paper-scissors model where you get a certain amount of time to see what kind of move your opponent is making and then respond in the correct way to win each point. While it does mean using the lightsaber correctly to counter each move, it never feels like a fluid saber battle and there is no 3D opponent on the screen that you're fighting with like players may be expecting based on console games like Jedi Fallen Order.
I think this is a well-made toy that's fun for kids to use with a friend to re-enact battles from the movies., and some of the training modes might be fun for a little while, but I think ultimately the app doesn't live up to the potential of the hardware. That doesn't make it a bad product - it just pays to go in eyes open in terms of the software experience kids should expect and know that the lightsaber itself is where most of the play value is to be found.

I have been a long-time fan of Star Wars and have purchased many Star Wars lightsabers for my kids. This is the first lightsaber where you press the built-in kyber crystal and change your character. I was very eager to try out and hone my Jedi warrior skills.
After assembling the lightsaber and downloading the necessary app, you can choose between Yoda, Rey, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, or Kylo Ren as your guide. Each character will have its own fighting style and will help train their way. There is also a meter on the app which indicates your position as a Jedi or Sith. You can either choose battle mode or training mode. Training mode is used to master the fighting style of each character, and battle mode is used to fight against the computer or another player. If another player is selected, you must have two of these lightsabers to determine a winner. The battle is more or less a game of paper, rock, scissors (focus, block, attack).
For the price, technology, and how fun the app is, I would highly recommend this lightsaber.

A very nice lightsaber that I would have loved as a child. Opens up hours of fun, however kids will need help setting up the connection and software the first few times.

As I tried to get this toy to work, I was reminded of the scene in "Big" the Tom Hanks movie, where he proposes some kind of toy (or comic book, it's been a long time!) that was way too complicated for a little kid. Because that's how I felt about this. As I unpacked it, put the batteries in, it lit up. Kinda. But then it was done. For the life of me, no matter what I did, I couldn't get the Lightsaber to light.
I didn't really want to download the app. An app for a toy? Really? Does every 6-year old have a smart phone? Not all the kids I know.
But I downloaded the app anyway, and still no good. I tried multiple times to pair it with my phone. No matter what I did, it just didn't go.
And while it says it's usable without the app, I couldn't get it to work.
To be fair, I got the saber to light once, but it immediately shut down, and that was that.
Maybe I got a bad one. Maybe I'm not smart enough. That's possible. But as for this one, I just can't recommend it.

I am a Star Wars fan however this item I tried numerous times and in general it is just not that fun. The lightsaber is similar to the other types of plastic lightsabers that are out there and it syncs with either your iPhone or iPad and you are able to choose characters to train with and then fight against. The training is complicated and its just an odd set up. The actual battles are not battles against a character, but just showing you a picture and hearing the types of attacks needed to fight the character which is even odder. I was shocked how bad this app was and how this toy was basically worthless. Sorry but I would not recommend.
