A really good movie. Many will like it. I don't think any wouldn't like it, really. Very funny. Very moving at times. Really good depictions of what an author would think if they met one of their characters, I think.

Overall, this movie surpassed my expectations. From bits of drama to comedy this film has it all. Not your typical movie I would say. It has a different style of its own. I would recommend watching it. Not your typical Will Ferrell movie.

Will Ferril does a superb job making a seemingly boring character very likable and the story is well written. Very enjoyable!

Less Eventful Than Fiction

It's an interesting premise: ho-hum IRS agent Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) realizes his every ritualistic move - from tying his tie in a single Windsor knot to brushing his teeth seventy-six times - is being narrated by an omniscient female with a British accent (Emma Thompson). Besides his initial confusion, Harold doesn't really have a problem with this, until the voice mentions his "imminent death." Enlisting the help of a literature professor (Dustin Hoffman) and a tax-evading baker (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Harold sets out on a quest to save his own life in this sweet but flawed comedy.
Marc Forster's quirky shooting style is colorful and engaging and suits the film perfectly, appropriate considering some of his previous work (Finding Neverland, Stay). Traditionally mind-numbing office scenes and city-spanning mass-transit excursions are jazzed up by clever camera angles, as well as by floating, computer-generated illustrations of what's really going on in Harold's brain.
The fiercely talented cast is one of the best things going for this film. Will Ferrell as Harold Crick gives a believable, mature performance (quite a change from everything else he's done) and makes his mundane hero likable, especially in scenes with the adorable Maggie Gyllenhaal. Emma Thompson is fantastic as Karen Eiffel, the tortured and slightly crazy narrator, and Dustin Hoffman is appropriately eccentric as Harold's adviser in all things literary. Tony Hale (one of my favorites from Arrested Development) and Queen Latifah round out the strong supporting cast, which includes a cameo from the lovely Kristin Chenoweth.
But despite its pleasing aesthetics and spot-on casting, "Stranger Than Fiction" suffers from a script that seems a little...empty. The potential for comedy, for touching scenes between other characters, and for more explanation of the “narration phenomenon” is diminished because the film chooses to focus entirely on Harold’s journey. While it is made perfectly clear that Harold's personality is intended to be equivalent to that of a shoehorn, that very trait causes him to be incredibly uninteresting, and though Ferrell does what he can to make his character sympathetic, the result is an ambivalence that ruins the rest of the film. Without a real interest in the outcome, “Stranger Than Fiction” remains a nice-looking, slightly amusing and ultimately uneventful one hundred and eleven minutes.

It is a 4-1/2 star but because that is not an option, I rounded up. This review will be split into two parts, first dealing with the content of the movie and the second dealing with the blu-ray advantages of the movie. The movie is really quiet heart warming. It is a love story through and through. Will Ferrell is actually acting in this movie. He pulls the role off nicely without being over the top. He doesn't over act either. I got the sense watching this movie that this is more of his true personality. The supporting cast is excellent. They accent the story nicely. Maggie Gyllenhaal is again excellent; her character is seems like it may be nothing more than a radical extension of her. I was happy because the movie is light hearted, nothing blows up, nobody gets shot, and there are no epic wars. It was an excellent addition to my blu-ray library. The picture quality is great. Nice and crisp, nothing over the top, but HD nonetheless. The audio quality does not come from the technical aspects of sound. The sound quality comes from the sound track. It truly makes this movie natural. The songs fit every scene they are in. I loved this movie because it was a light hearted next-gen movie that added something deperately missing from collection, levity.

This is a great movie, i started to watch it reluctantly because I didn't think this film would suit my needs. Boy was I wrong.... this is a beautifully acted movie and well written as well. The movie is a lot deeper then it would appear on the outside, Farrell gives his best performance and actually brought me to tears. Dont get me wrong though... this is a well suited comedy with a drama ending that will bring everyone in the room to an emotional state.

This is a very engaging, excellent movie!
The plot is unique and the writing is excellent, and the acting is convincing.
While there are quite a few funny parts to the movie, I don't consider it a comedy, and I could see how some people who are expecting this to be a typical Will Ferrell comedy might not like this movie. It just won't match those expectations.
The story is about someone who is not very excited about life finding himself. It is heart warming to see someone find joy and passion, and I feel that this is a great message, and yet the movie isn't preachy or overly obvious.
I highly recommend this movie to someone who likes light dramas, some comedy, some romance, and engaging stories.

My wife and I are not really Will Ferrel fans (although Elf was a good christmas movie), but this movie showed he has more acting skills than we had thought. As his character tries to figure out whether he is in a comedy or tragity, the movie turns out to be both. Well thought out story.
Blu-ray made the experiance even better, a great Friday or Saturday night couples movie.

Something different from Will Ferrell

This is a very interesting movie from Will Ferrell. If you are a fan of his antics in his other movies, or despise them you will be surprised by the acting that he delivers in Stranger Than Fiction. This movie offers a different type of comedy from Ferrell, as his life is narrated by someone that no one else can hear. His efforts to fight the voice are quite comical. The movie also builds all the way through to the end, and you are left in suspense as to what the end is going to be. There is a very big maturing process that Ferrell's character goes through in this movie. As he is also romantically involved, and as his life seems to be turning around the voice tells him he is going to die. If you are a fan of something different, rather than what Hollywood typically delivers this is a pretty good movie. The Blu-Ray offering is nice as the sound quality and picture is excellent.
