this is a tripod that has multiple features and is by far the best bang for your buck if your looking for an easily transported medium/ large tripod with a quick detach interface. it is very lightweight making it that much more portable, dual extension tube legs with locking tabs, a short twist lock collar on the inside middle ensuring the tripod doesn't break itself down mid shot regardless of angle, horizontal and vertical axis adjustments (one thumbscrew for horizontal, and a hand twist bar about 9" for the vertical axis), in the midst of all those features it also allows rapid adjustments to vertical raise/ lower the focal plane with a ratcheting gear arm(to raise and lower the camera once your other values are locked into place), rubber feet, wide mouth female contact and matching male quick detach surface that can stay affixed to your cameras tripod bung... i bought this a while back for 69$ and felt as if i was getting a decent deal so for the 20$ price you really won't find much better... do NOT beat on it though, it is definitely not a tactically enabled unit and is for to-&-fro picture taking, not to bounce around in the ned of your truck, all the material is sturdy but thin-walled, and by only downsides to this (because of the price that (I) paid is the small variations in movement while pushing the button because of its light duty build-however it can be overcome by simply letting go of the camera before the shot takes place, and the other downside i found (again based on (MY) price was that the vertical adjustment portion is increasingly wobbly the higher it goes... which is about 18", would have been great if they put some rubber stabilizers in their or something to keep tension on the tube, also watch your finger ;)

I don't use a tripod all the time, but it's something I need to have in my life. My previous tripod was just a cheapy, but lasted over 15 years. When it finally broke I figured I'd get one that's supposed to be at least a little bit better so I went with this one. The tripod part seems at least as sturdy as my old one, and definitely aesthetically updated. It's got a foam tube covering the top segment of one of the legs for whatever reason (I guess to make carrying it more comfortable?) so that's neat. I really like the fact that it comes with a phone mount and a GoPro mount, that's handy. The only component of this tripod that I worry will fail is the adjustment handle which feels far flimsier than my old one. AAAAANNND the leg just fell off as I was reviewing this thing. Well that's just FANTASTIC!! Looks like it's been missing a screw all along?? Obviously not returnable since it's BEST BUY...guess that's that.

Any Sunpak item or tripod, I believe, is good quality and great price range for anyone starting out or just needing that one little extra, cheap equipment. The PlatinumPlus 5858D is an amazing build and lightweight tripod. This is my second tripod bought, only because my first was broken by another person after lending it to them. I love it. I take it everywhere. Either hook it to the side of my bag or carry it by hand. Pros - Lightweight. Great Height for most standing shots. Easy Quick-Release. Nice rubber footing to keep sturdy. Cons - Lightweight (haha sounds weird to be pro & con, but due to how light it is, being in high wind areas is a gamble. also any heavy lens like 250mm or above is a lot of weight for it to handle so slightly shakey after handling). Doesnt have weight hook to hang say camera bag or anything to weigh it down which is back to 'lightweight'. Also the lack of minimum height is a minus to me. cannot use it to get sturdy low wide angle shot, so say a gopro or ultra wide-angle lens and/or fisheye lens. Those are just some minuses to me that would make it more versitile. But like I said, for the price it does what it needs to do and gets the job done. I use it for everything. Even mounting steady lights. Have been using this specific one for 2 years

I've bought and used cheap Dynex(another Best Buy brand) tripods from Best Buy before and they have been fine for the amount paid. I actually even have them still 7 years later. I decided to get this Platinum Plus one to take backpacking because it was so lightweight. I've used it a couple of times and it is not even worth the amount I paid for it. It is terrible quality and the legs bow when fully extended. i would never be able to step away from my camera because the slightest wind would probably knock it over. Spend a little more and get the Manfrotto tripod or any other tripod. It's worth spending a little more to make sure you have a reliable tripod, even if it is just for occasional use.

Pros: This is a basic, inexpensive tripod. I use this with my DSLR camera. The legs slide easily and firmly lock into place. It does what it's supposed to do: keeps your camera steady for remote photographing to avoid blurry photos. It has a "quick-release" attachment that you screw onto the bottom of your camera. I like that this attachment doesn't require a coin to operate; you can just flip up the handle to loosen/tighten it. Cons: This is did not have a dedicated "hook" so that you can weigh it down to prevent tipping during wind gusts. This is not super accurate; you may accidentally shift the camera when you tighten the locking mechanism for panning/tilting. Even though there is a leveling bubble, there's no stand-alone one to determine if your shot is exactly horizontal (are there even beginner tripods that do this?). Pro/Con: This is medium weight. It's not super lightweight / small to be a portable tripod (get a gorillapod for that). It's not heavy which means wind gusts can potentially blow it down while your expensive camera is attached (go MacGyver something so you can hang your camera bag from it while taking photos).

Okay, so, for the money this tripod is pretty good. I've used it extensively for the past couple of weeks while shooting a stop-motion animation film for school. The things that are disappointing: (1) No cover/carrying case like with my last tripod; (2) When raising camera up or down the centerline tends to shift left/right making it quite shaky if you are trying to hold position for exact shooting; and (3) the base that attaches to the camera and sits in the tripod isn't very secure it seems, again...a little wobble in it so you want to be sure not to touch the camera if you are needing motionless shots...Other than that, like I said, it works and is a great tripod for the money but I don't think it would cost too much more to throw in a cheap carrying case...

I recently found myself looking for a full size tripod after the loss of my previous tripod to use for my microprojector, and camcorder. I can't believe how difficult it is to find a decent projector at a decent price anymore. After shopping in 3 different stores, I settled for this one. The higher priced sub-$100 ones I looked at either had unusual, hard to level heads, or had awkward neck extension methods, allowing a camera to simply drop as you loosen it. This one was one of the few I found that was unbroken from the box that had a level, removable mount, smooth raising and lowering neck, and smooth motion. I think it's ridiculous that anymore you have to pay over $100 for most standard tripods to havr what you want. In fact, many higher priced models I found by same manufacturers would lose beneficial features for very gimmicky features or options. So, this tripod works. It's nothing spectacular, but works.

Best Buy Blew Christmas For Me

My wife bought me two of these tripods for Christmas. It would have been a nice surprise except that days before Christmas I received an email from Best Buy asking me to review this tripod. I thought "what the heck" for a second and then realized in their overzealous attempt for reviews, Best Buy had ruined Christmas. I tried to pretend like I was suprised, but my wife knew I knew and when I told her the story she was ticked off at Best Buy. It really is a poor business practice. I mean she bought it a week before Christmas and on Dec 22 you are asking me for a review? I won't fault the product for Best Buy's mistake. I gave it a fair 4 stars because it fills the role I wanted. A cheap tripod I can take with me to Italy and be light enough to bring with me into Tuscan hill towns at night...while being cheap enough that I can leave it behind if I want more room in my luggage to bring home some nice Italian Red Wines. I once brought a $1000 tripod and head to Europe and it stayed in the trunk most of the time since it was too much to lug around. This will be perfect.

My 9 yo son loves shooting videos and my 13 yo daughter loves to take pictures, so this was a great gift for them both to share. They no longer have to try and prop up their devices to capture a shot which is great for them because the finished product comes out "better", and great for my piece of mind knowing that nothing will take a fall and/or break. There were smaller tripods that sold for more, so this was the least expensive to met their need and really help them get into their projects. *****I debated taking a star off for my heads up, but decided it shouldn't effect the overall rating of this product since it's not an actual "fault" of the tripod, so.....pay attention to the top of the tripod and the bottom of the device you plan on using. My daughter has an iPhone 7+, so we had to by an attachment that screwed on to the top of the tripod and then clamped on to the sides of her phone to hold it in place. AN ADDITIONAL PURCHASE MAY BE NECESSARY!!!****

I bought this for use with my mini-disc Sony camcorder to record daughter's school play. The pan and angle adjustments were just what I needed to capture the action on stage. I had never used a tripod before so I set it up and practiced a bit the day before the performance. It helped me to get familiar with the set up and head angle adjustment locks. Love the quick set up features: flip lever locks and the geared center column for height fine tuning once the legs are set. The center leg brace lock gave good stability and the level assisted greatly with leg height adjustments. It has rubber non-skid feet to keep it steady on floors. It will hold up to 8 lbs. of camera (include your lens and light attachments in this) .The sturdy aluminum tripod itself weighs 1.85 lbs which was nothing to carry. I may look into buying a carrying bag for it, or I may not, as it was no problem to carry it in hand. Just what I was looking for and good price to value.

    Junk

My fault, the blame is mostly mine, thinking a $19 tripod would be anything more than cheap plastic junk. I saw the "Sunpak" label and thought I was buying a different model. Sunpak makes other, sturdier models for about $10 or $15 more -- not sure the specs on them, but they are usually light gray and black, as opposed to all solid black, like these. I didn't pay close enough attention to the details on these tripods and accidentally ordered four of them for my middle-school film class. They have all lost a part or broken in some way within one week. Yes, a middle-school film class can be rough on equipment, but my tripods usually last at least 6-12 months, not 6-12 days.

I now own three of these tripods so that I can do a 3 camera shoot with my 3 identical video cameras. These tripods have the best combination of solid, sturdy yet unbelievably lightweight. When anyone picks them up they are surprised. They even have the level indicators to make sure it's flat. I like their latch legs better than tripods where you have to turn something to release the legs. These make it quick and easy to setup fast. They do not collapse down enough that you would put them in your backpack but are still small enough that II have taken them on planes or put them in my luggage. I have had one of them since 2014 and I just bought two more in 2018. That says it all. :-)

I used my Nikon Powershot with this tripod and loved it. I only need it to hold the camera steady so i can record some video and it did the job. I went very high, had many angles i could adjust so i could get the right picture and it held them during hours of recording. The legs are very thin when extended out, but if your using it on steady flooring and not outside in the wind or anything i think its perfect for the price and quality. I also own a Canon Rebel T6 DSLR. I don't know if i would want to use this tripod on the DSLR I'd want to buy a more sturdy feeling tripod due to the equipment loss if it were to fall, but i may need to use it one day and will update review if it holds up nicely.

I first bought this tripod a couple days after Christmas for my brand new camera. It was shipped and it worked no problem. I used it a lot in the next month and it was fine but after about a month of use, rubber pieces on the feet came off, the rubber piece on the bottom came off and it became less stable. I went to use it today and I realized that the piece that my camera is screwed onto was very loose on the tripod, and then suddenly, my camera fell off of the tripod. I tried tightening some screws to see if that would help, but when I tried putting my camera on the tripod, the release clip completely broke off. This is a very poorly constructed tripod and I would not recommend it to anyone wishing to use it for more than a month. I was very disappointed in this product and I do not plan on buying another one.

This tripod is a great buy for the price. I put my equipment through the ringer and it's held up so far. I could tell right out of the box, however, which pieces will fail first. For the money this is a great deal. With some patience, it does the same thing as a 500 dollar tripod. Pros: -two bubble levels are helpful -fairly sturdy when legs are fully extended -comes with quick release -light-weight Cons: -you must turn spinning handle to raise and lower the head (minor inconvenience) -almost impossible to make the head level without adjusting one leg to compensate -I can tell that the fasteners on the legs and the smaller screws will fail first just by how they feel as I use them again and again.

I got this on sale, and felt it was a good price for what it is. I just wanted something inexpensive and light, and this fit the bill. You can tell it's a low cost tripod; it's not very strong and parts aren't as smooth and tight as a higher priced tripod, but it definitely works. I wouldn't use it for action shots, as the rotating and angle changes aren't as smooth as I'd like for fast paced panning, but if you're just wanting to take landscape photos, it will work fine. I found I needed to use the timer on the camera most of the time because just pressing the button on the camera would cause it move a little bit and the pictures weren't clear. If I had the option, I would rate it 3.5 stars, but I rounded up instead of down because of the decent price.

We were using two of our camcorders to record son's wedding from different angles. Just wanted to set up cameras on tripods and let run unattended. Needed a 2nd tripod for the 2nd camera. This tripod worked perfectly. We were able to use the crank to get high enough to video over the heads of the seated people and capture the beautiful scenes overlooking the water at the San Diego location. The whole thing was light enough to pick up and carry inside without needing to unhook camera when it was time for the indoor reception. We captured the day and were able to present the cards we used to record to our son and daughter in law.

I personally use this tripod for making youtube videos (@TheBrotatoes) with my Canon Vixia HF R500. It works fine for my occasional light shoots. BUT, if you are serious about filmmaking, photography, or just have a heavy camera, I would recommend getting something else. Here's why: The screws on mine are a bit loose and you can shake the tripod EASILY. Second, it's not super durable, and one of my feet at the bottom fell of entirely while using it. And lastly, camera movement isn't ideal. For example, I'll sometimes have to make multiple cuts because the camera isn't very smooth when using it. Even loosening the top doesn't help at all. Overall, I would use it if you aren't super serious about photography or if you can't afford anything better.

Simple to use and fully adjustable tripod. has been working very well for me in studio and on the hiking trail, built-in level makes sure I get it straight. Legs can be individually lengthened, but spreading them out must be all together. This is no problem for the most part, but it mounts best on my travel backpack with two legs spread just a little, which makes the third leg stick straight out. Finally, the mount assembly is sturdy, but only if everything is tightened down, which adds time to simple adjustments. For example, the vertical telescoping function is way too choppy and wobbly to do while shooting video, you have to set the height, tighten it up, then shoot. This is not detrimental to me, but something to be aware of.

I needed a tripod that would allow me to connect to a GoPro 7 Black, and saw that the tripod had an attachment for a gopro. However, the cheap plastic part was either defective or simply isn't made well for this specific use. the bottom part screwed into the tripod correctly, but the connector to the gopro case did not fit right, remained not secured, as the female end receptacle for the included generic gopro bolt did not have any threads to screw into, causing it to keep falling off. If you don't need it for a gopro, i guess it's ok for the price. but not for gopro use.
