Walter Matthau is absolutely outstanding in this role with George Burns as his old partner who can't stand each other, but they have the utmost respect for each other. Burns won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and Matthau "lost" Best Actor to Jack Nicholson for his role in One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Also this is based on a play by Neil Simon who also wrote The Odd Couple.
