Perfect blend of music and lyrics, combined with inspired playing. A real treasure. I own more than 50 Dead recordings, and this one is in the top three. Only wish I was there to see and hear it live.

The Missing Centerpiece

Even as the number of officially released in-concert albums by The Grateful Dead seemed, to outsiders, to be excessive, this was the missing jewel. The August 1972 fund-raiser to get the Kesey family's creamery past a rough spot resulted could really only be faulted because it took place after Pigpen's final show before his death six month's later. That said, it presented a near-perfect version of what remained. Each player was either at his peak or in a perfect position to support someone else at his peak. The jams were creative, wide-reading and joyous. The singing fine. All kinds of highlights exist. Mine is an only slightly incongruous sequence. Start with one of the ultimate performances of "Dark Star," slippery guitar and inventive guitar / bass / piano interplay, and later a bass-drums-piano section that is a good example of the 1973 Lesh-Kreutzman-Godchaux workouts I tend to call the Bill Evans Trio of Doom. Then, possibly because Ken Babbs seems to request the song when presenting Weir with a cowboy hot during his introduction of the band, a seemingly incongruous journey to Marty R's "El Paso," followed by a second country song that would often work as a coda to DS, Merle H's "sing Me Back Home." This is just one set of moments. The three CDs include gobs of them, and the at-long-last commercial DVD release of the film "Sunshine Daydream" does as well.
A rock music collection really needs to include at least one Grateful Dead show . For a legitimately available single show? This is likely the best choice. A couple of ideas after that point would include a show from the Europe 72 tour, something from the first half of 1969, May of 1977, an something with an acoustic set.

You get the Dead in all their Grateful glory, with the original lineup intact here, which includes rare footage of the Merry Pranksters on hand to aid the band in raising enough money to save a milk creamery belonging to their friend Ken Kesey. This is the band in their prime captured live and loose. Great jams and well structured selections featuring Dark Star at over 30 min. which is pure honey to the flock! From start to finish, how wonderful it is to have this rare moment in all it's historic glory! Dig it and enjoy this awesome trip to The Promised Land. Oh, if only things could have stayed like this as depicted in this film. This set is absolutely essential for everyone on the planet to own.
