I've never played any of the Bomberman games, but I have heard of him. I've also seen a little bit of gameplay from some of the older games.
I got this on sale on Black Friday last year. The gameplay from the trailer looks like fun. So, I figured I would give this game a try. :)
The cool thing about inside the case is that they show you the controls of the game. Plus, you see Bomberman and his siblings in the background of the inside cover of the case.
If you're new to the Bomberman series, I suggest you play through Easy mode if you are not familiar with previous Bomberman games. If you're familiar with Bomberman, there's a Veteran mode for you to play.
Pros:
* The game has a Battle Mode that can have up to 8 players via local
connection and online connection.
* Costumes for your characters. The costumes are based on characters
from other Konami franchises. (ie. Belmont, Dracula,
Goemon, Reiko, Pyramid Head, and so much more!)
* The costumes can be purchased with in-game money. No micro-
transactions.
* The story mode was fun to watch and the humor was funny.
* You can skip the cutscenes by pressing the plus "+" button.
* The artstyle is fun, stylish, and cartoony.
I didn't have any negatives with this game. It took me awhile to get use to playing the mechanics of the game. Once you get the hang of it, it is fun.
As you progress through the levels, it becomes more challenging.
The bosses can be challenging at times. So, you have to figure out a strategy to bomb them before they blow you up with their own bombs. Or try to avoid accidentally bombing yourself. Which is kinda hilarious and embarrassing to watch.
Overall, this is a fun Bomberman game and great for those who are Bomberman fans. I would recommend this to someone who wants to try something new that has action and multiplayer to play with friends and family. Or just enjoy playing the single player mode.

I really wanted to like this game. I have enjoyed Bomberman since the NES days. The main issue are the controls. This type of maze game is naturally going to need to be played with a D-pad. Trying to use the analog stick results in you pushing up against barriers and making wrong turns. So then you have to use the Switch Joycon D-pad, which is just 4 buttons, and that is also hard to use. I have a Pro Controller so I use that when I can. One thing to note is that you must completely detach the Joycons from the console in order for the Switch allow you to use the Pro Controller. I have only had this issue with Super Bomberman R. Also, placing a bomb is inconsistent, sometimes it goes on the square you are standing on, and sometimes it ends up in front of you, which frequently leaves you trapped between the bomb and wall.
Playing through the single player campaign is pretty good until you get to a boss character. These guys simply don't make mistakes, and you will end up blowing yourself trying to defeat them. So far I have defeated the first 2 boss characters, and they were both dumb luck where I spammed bombs everywhere and blew them up before I blew myself up. You will blow youself up a lot due to the bad controls.
This is a $30 game at best.

I am very happy with this purchase. My son and I have took turns playing this game. The graphics are amazing. However, I vaguely remember the original bomber man game, but for the price that best buy had it marked down for I figured that I would not be upset.
The game was definitely worth more I feel like I won on this buy!

The gameplay is functional, but doesn’t feel as though it perfected what previous entries have accomplished. I wish there was a classic mode with sprite based gameplay rather than these unnecessary 3D models.
It's nice to have all the customization options, but this is a classic that doesn't benefit from being overcomplicated.

The game is old school bomber man fun. The story mode is like a Saturday morning cartoon, which some may not like but I personally enjoyed it. I also like that the entire story mode can be played co-op.
The best part of any Bomberman game is it's multiplayer modes. The battle modes are a bit sparse but its still the same classic Bomberman fun. The game's online multiplayer suffered from terrible lag and input delay early on, but the dedicated developers largely solved these issues. They also added new stages and characters free of charge, which is unheard of in today's world of charging consumers for everything from horse armor to Darth Vader.
Unfortunately, despite solid sales numbers no one plays this game online any more. If it were cheaper it might have achieved even greater sales, like the Xbox game bomberman live. I never had trouble finding a game there, even years after it game out. Not the case here unfortunately. Once this gets a serious discount, the online may pick back up.
As it stands, it's hard to recommend a Bomberman game for $50, especially without a functioning online mode, so I can't recommend buying the game unless you are a serious Bomberman fan(like me) and have local friends to play this with(unlike me :/ ).

Very fun multiplayer game! Love the characters, and the customization has a wide range of options to pick from. Gameplay is very simple, I've never played a Bomberman game before, and I got the hang of it right away. My only gripe about this game, there is multiple stages or arenas you can play in, however, most of them are highly annoying to play due to the gimmicks of the stage. Like slippery ice that your character can't stop sliding across, and magnets that attract the bombs you set down. I usually end up just playing the regular basic stage due to that. But overall, if you are looking for a fun party game, or a game to just kill time with some friends, I would look into this one if I were you!

If you have friends over or know people to play with online, buy Bomberman! It's a ton of fun and a lot of strategy once you get the basics down. How many games can 8 people play at the same time?!? Lots of options to customize and switch up the gameplay. The single player campaign is decent, but that's not what you buy this game for...one of the best multiplayer games out there.
Simple to learn, easy to play, and a ton of fun with others!

Super Bomberman R for Nintendo Switch delivers explosive multiplayer mayhem with classic Bomberman charm. The game's colorful visuals and lively soundtrack add to the excitement of bombing your way through mazes, whether solo or with friends. The diverse range of characters and power-ups keep matches fresh and engaging. However, the single-player campaign can feel repetitive, and online matchmaking occasionally suffers from lag issues. Overall, Super Bomberman R is a blast for parties and quick gaming sessions, offering nostalgic fun with a modern twist.

Super Bomberman R for Nintendo Switch is overall a fun party game and I enjoy playing it with family/friends. Story mode seems decent, but I didn't get too far though only because I mostly play it with friends on battle mode. The game play is very much like the old Bomberman games from NES/SNES. Graphic is very nice with 3D. I'd recommend this game to everyone especially you have family/friends over.

The ONLY REASON I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because right now it is CRIMINALLY overpriced at $50!!! I paid $25 for mine Black Friday and that THAT price, it's a FUN game, but I'd say do not pay a penny more than $30 for this. I mean it's BOMBERMAN. You can play Bomberman on just about any other system for WAY cheaper. Just an honest opinion from a long time fan of the series.

Bomber man hasn’t really changed in decades. Game is a ton of fun and it looks good, but it’s 50 bucks...
That’s not worth it no matter what. I picked it up on Black Friday for half so I’m content, but honestly even that’s a bit much for the same game we’ve been playing since the 90s. Should be a 3 star instead, but I’ll judge based off the game as opposed to the price

I don't feel like breaking down the mechanics of this game because others here have already done that...so I'll just type on the basics.
I have been playing Bomberman and Zelda since the NES days. I have always enjoyed Bomberman, especially on the GameCube. This game is a must have if you have 2 or more players! There is a story mode with bosses where you can play 2 player co-op and there is a battle mode where up to four players can go at it. If you don't have 4 players you can add a NPC to keep things frantic. I am a huge Zelda fan too, but this game is what I preordered the Switch for. While in line, I asked others what games are they buying and a lot of people said Bomberman R! Do yourself a favor and get this game now!!!! Thank You Hudson Soft and Konami for releasing this game!!!!!!

Bomberman returns!

After what seems like a decade, Bomberman has returned in the form of a Switch launch title, "Super Bomberman R."
The game is classic 8 and 16-bit Bomberman fare, running around in grid-style arenas and laying down cross-shaped explosions to take out your enemies. "Super Bomberman R" features two main modes of play: a Story campaign of 50 levels spanning across 6 worlds, complete with well-animated 2D cutscenes, and, of course, multiplayer.
The Story is simple enough (returning villain Buggler is threatening the Bomber Galaxy), but I was really impressed with how colorful and full of energy the cutscenes and voice acting were. Most stages play out with simple objectives, like defeat all enemies, or small puzzles, like pressing a certain amount of switches to open the exit gate. If you've played any 8/16-bit Bomberman games before, you'll feel right at home (Hopefully one day we'll get another game in the same vein of the more adventurous N64 trilogy). Movement will take some getting used to, as playing with the analog stick will likely lead to some cheap deaths where you turn a corner you didn't mean to. Your characters are very sensitive to even the slightest touch on the analog stick, so I'd recommend playing with the D-Pad to avoid this issue.
Multiplayer has always been Bomberman's bread-and-butter, and it mostly shines here. With up to 8 players, matches can get crazy hectic, but they're always a blast. There's also an Online Battle option, but as of this review, finding a match can take quite a bit of time, and most matches I played were laggy to the point of being unplayable (Konami has since issued a statement saying they're looking into this).
Unfortunately, customization options are lacking, from being unable to set the difficulty of the A.I. (they can be pretty cheap!), to turning off certain items. Bomberman Live this is not, and considering the price of "Super Bomberman R" to the previous online titles on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, this is a little disappointing.
Still, if you're craving some classic Bomberman action, you can't go wrong. There's nothing quite like getting a 'revenge' kill on your buddy and getting thrown back into the fray, and having them curse your name. It's great to see the little guy back, and hopefully, we'll be seeing him more in the future.
Maybe now we'll finally see Bomberman in Smash Bros.? Time will only tell.

Poor Launch Crippled Online

When this game first came out, it had a lot of performance issues (framerate, input lag). The developers patched it to have a lower resolution so that multiplayer gameplay could maintain a smooth 60fps but at that point people seemed to have moved on and I can't even find a match. It's a shame because this game is actually pretty solid. It's hard to go wrong with Bomberman especially since a strength of the Nintendo Switch is the pick up and play co-op potential with the two separate joy-cons. The developers also seem like the only people at Konami that still actually care about making a fun game because they add cool characters from their dormant IPs through FREE updates. This game does deserve your time, just make sure you have friends and a bunch of controllers because you probably won't find a game online just by yourself.

Fun. Not quite how i remembered. A little challenging to get the hang of. Definitely a fun multiplayer game. Not bad for the price. Just a little practice with the controls and what the items mean again. Solid old Bomberman.
