Having grown up on the NES and SNES, I was happy to see an entirely new 2D entry in the mainline mario series. After the phenomenal Super Mario Odyssey easily became my family's favorite video game during the pandemic, we were somewhat disappointed with the remakes that have been released since. It was an easy choice to pre-order Super Mario Wonder, but I was doubtful the experience could compare to Odyssey, despite more emphasis on co-op play. Gameplay: From the start screen, the essence of Mario games is captured perfectly in Super Mario Wonder. Levels oscillate between familiar terrains and novel landscapes. Most mario games offer something new that at first seems like it will disrupt the always-solid platforming experience and genius level design hallmark to 2D mario adventures. Wonder includes several new power-ups, an overwhelming number of one-at-a-time badges provide a small change in-stage, and the wonder flower induces brief level-warping or mario-warping mini-challenges. None of these are affect the game on the level of Oydssey's Cappy or Mario Sunshine's FLUDD. However, they are all interesting and worthy additions. They also allow for a solo base difficulty that is decidedly more challenging (as you get further into the game) than many other 2D Mario games. Yet, the game (as you would expect) is adaptive to a wide range of player skill because of the co-op, invincible characters (that don't need to be unlocked), new power-ups, and badges. Still, I do miss the simplicity of the platforming challenges hallmark to Mario games, which aren't quite as much on display here as compared to collecting star coins in New Super Mario Bros. Graphics: Graphically, the game delivers as much as the hardware allows. Detailed environments and distinct aesthetics for each world are evident. It can be a bit busy, but always fun. The level of polish is as good as any Mario game, which already sets the bar high. Character animations, character model design, enemy design, and effects, all add greatly to the experience. Controls: The controls, for the most part, are what you'd expect from a Mario title: reliable. Yet, during some platforming, my kids experienced issues they blamed on lagging response. It could have been that they were sitting too far from the Switch or that they are kids. I didn't notice any issues with input lag or imprecision. I also love that Nintendo just 2 core (run and jump) buttons are needed most of the time, supplementing with the top-right bumper button (or, alternatively, shaking the control) on occasion. Co-op: The co-op mode is where "Super Mario Wonder" truly attempts to bridge the generational gap. Collaborating with my children, combining our abilities to face challenges, is a great way to spend time together. The characters that don't receive damage from enemies make it easy for novices to contribute to the progress and keep up with more advanced players. Overall Assessment: Super Mario Wonder delivers on combining many of the most beloved and nostalgiac components of former 2D Mario adventures while avoiding the trap of feeling like an updated version of a previous game. My kids enjoyed the new features more than I did, with my 8-year old laughing hysterically every time I hop along as a crouched elephant Mario. I'll update as we continue our adventure...

Best Mario game I’ve played in years! such creativity went into this game- at first glance may seem run of the mill but I won’t spoil anything- it’s called wonder for a reason- I’ve put 40+ hours just “beat “ the game but still have to 100% I enjoy the online aspect and helping others out with my standee .. countless hours going through levels even after everything is done for the sheer fun factor of the levels.. they’re some more difficult levels as well to give all types of players the Mario experience they want - not to mention the power ups, badges, etc .. have fun!!

I’ll start this review by saying I am a 35 yr old grown man that usually plays FPS games like Call of Duty , Battlefield etc… Once I started this game I couldn’t put down my Switch until I beat it. I’ve always had a soft spot though for Mario games as it’s something my whole family would play together in my childhood. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a fantastic game that brings back those memories and has that awesome side scrolling feel while still feeling fresh and modern. There’s nods to the classic games with some new abilities which makes the game very fun - and offers a ton of different ways to play. The game’s graphics are stunning, with bright colors and vivid animations that bring the Flower Kingdom to life especially if you’re playing on the OLED model. The gameplay is super smooth and the online feature is such a good idea and helps out with those very difficult levels - without worrying about kids experiencing a public chat. It’s helpful to play with the online mode activated because if you die you can fly over to another player that’s in the same level as you and have them revive you. It has been an absolute hit in my house with friends and even my retired father getting slightly addicted to beating it lol. The game is a perfect mix of classic and new, with a variety of enemies and stages that are sure to keep you entertained for hours. You can also switch between characters when a level is too challenging. It’s very helpful when you keep dying to something and you can decide to switch to Yoshi or Toad or Princess Peach and not take damage unless you’re crushed or fall into a pit. Switching characters doesn’t reset progress either so that’s very helpful. Overall, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a MUST play game for fans of the Mario franchise. It’s a fun and engaging game that is sure to provide hours of entertainment and repeat playable content.

great game, extremely fun, lots of levels to complete, great multiplayer game, if you enjoy Mario games you will love this game, levels are easy to finish, but there are some really challenging levels in the game but they are optional and don't have to be finished to beat the game

I wanted this game for my Nintendo Switch from the moment it came out, and when I finally got it, I wasn’t disappointed. It incorporates modern graphics with the same Super Mario platformer experience that many of us have grown to love from our younger days. This game offers new game mechanics too, so there is far more than just the standard mushroom or fire power up from the original games. These new mechanics are not only fun, but add a new challenge to the game’s dynamic. It’s fun to play!

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a amazing game! Gorgeous art style, unique gameplay at each level and spectacular music. The new badge system in the game is a cool feature and it makes the game more fun. I have enjoyed it very much so far.

One of the best games Ive played in a long while. The animation was beutiful, the music was good and the levels were creative. Mario Wonder is a must play for anyone who likes the itallian plumber or the platforming genre.

Very beautiful 2d Mario game. This was a very fun game to play all the way through, so many references to past games in the form of music, and the different badges makes replaying levels so much fun.

This game was very well made. I love the new power ups. My son is in love with the game he plays everyday! We do limit his play time lol. I 200% recommend this game!! Hope they make a Part 2

Nice release for a new co-op Mario game. I’m bias when it comes to Super Mario franchise as I’ve been a long time fan. But Wonder does bring new features and abilities which I always look forward to. The games great but ordering it ahead of time and picking it up at Best Buy was a pain. Being the next person on the pick-up line at Best Buy, the associate walked away and started ringing someone else up on the normal pay line. It took over 10 minutes, I finally had to say something out loud so that he would speed things up. Not even an apology, unacceptable, why have a regular line and a line for pick up only if your associate is going to walk away and service the other line. “PICK UP” is suppose to be quick and painless, thats why you buy the item online first. It defeats the purpose if you have to wait longer!

One of the best games ive ever played. There are some very difficult stages but overall its still a great game. Highly recommend playing.

Right when you start up the game you just immersed in a story, and when you get to the first level, it’s just so creative and charming and fun. When I saw the reveal trailer back in June I didn’t really like the talking flowers, turns out I was wrong. The talking flowers literally make the experience so much better and they just feel alive, It’s like when you interact with a character. I can’t keep explaining this game, you just really need to play it, It’s a must buy and It’s in my opinion, The best Mario game of all time

Super fun game! Our whole family enjoys playing this game together. And Best buy had it all ready for pick-up on the release day for us.

It’s a fun new take on Mario and friends. Endless play time and new power ups are the best part!

Typical mario quality game. There are 7 playable characters. You can transform into an elephant. What more do you need to know? Buy the game!

Seriously love this game, i mostly play it on the tv with my husband but i gotta say it looks gorgeous on the Oled model. Other than visuals this game is a blast we're enjoying every minute of it and wishing there was more!

The last few 2D Mario games were a bit repetitive and disappointing. However, here they managed to improve the formula a lot and make it feel fun and original again. It's been many years since I enjoyed a 2D Mario game. I think this is the best one since Super Mario World. The game also include an art print; its a good plus if you buy the game, but thats all.

Loved it. So had some time went in to the store just to find a certain charger for my phone saw the display for this game. So I stopped to play was hooked. Had to make a call to the husband to make sure it was ok to purchase (and yes I called him. I don’t like to just spend money). But yes got the approval and bought it played it as soon as I got home.
