The most Smash for your buck
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The game's title says it all: this is the ultimate Super Smash Bros. game. It is very much aimed at Smash veterans, but does just enough to still be open to newcomers. The developers pulled off the incredible feat of bringing back every fighter in Super Smash Bros. history, and making them all feel like viable options—including third-party characters, characters that were originally DLC, and characters that used to be seen as jokes, such as Pichu from Super Smash Bros. Melee. In addition, the vast majority of stages and items are back, along with a few new ones. The biggest new features for single-player are the revamped classic mode and the new adventure mode. Since Melee, classic mode has been a series of randomized fights with a few bonus games and a battle against Master Hand (and sometimes Crazy Hand or Master Core) at the end. In Ultimate, every character (except the Mii fighters) has a personalized route that is usually based on the character's role in xer own series or xer Super Smash Bros. history, and the boss at the end of the route is sometimes not Master Hand—for instance, as one of the game's trailers revealed, Galleom, a boss from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, makes a return, though there are bosses new to Smash Bros. as well. The new adventure mode, World Of Light, is somewhat lacking in story compared to Super Smash Bros. Brawl's The Subspace Emissary, but it is understandable it would be difficult to write such a story with over 75 characters. Instead of side-scrolling levels, you encounter a variety of spirits in the world, and defeat them to unlock more of the world. Spirit battles are similar to event mode from previous games, with the “spirit” of an entity from Nintendo's history (or sometimes third-parties) being represented by a Smash battle with special conditions. (For instance, The Imprisoned from The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword is represented by a giant black King K. Rool defended by a Girihim assist trophy.) Outside of adventure mode, you can also fight a random selection of spirits on the Spirit Board, which rotates throughout the day, and you can delete spirits from your collection and use their “cores” to “summon” other spirits, similar to a lot of mobile gacha games. On the multiplayer side, the biggest change I have noticed to Smash gameplay is attacks feel like they launch farther than in past games, but recovering is also easier than in past games. It took a bit of getting used to, but once your brain gets past how that is just not how physics works, it speeds up the game a bit because you get to where you would ultimately be launched a bit faster, and can then just focus on recovering and continuing the fight. Some other changes I particularly like are directional air dodges and the ability to charge special moves (like Samus's charge shot) in the air. A few other minor tweaks I have noticed are the changes to perfect shielding, and that dodges become weaker if you dodge frequently. There are numerous other character-specific tweaks, but it would take forever to list them all here. Suffice to say if you have played Smash before, it will feel familiar enough, but if you are a hardcore competitive Smash player, it is definitely distinctively different than what came before it. Overall, as disappointed as I was by the lack of a Subspace Emissary-like story mode, or a new multiplayer mode like Smash 3DS's Smash Run, there is no denying there is a ridiculous amount of content in this game. Balancing 75+ characters is no easy feat, and the variety of multiplayer customization options, unique classic mode routes, and 1000+ different spirit battles provide no shortage of content and collectables, even if they are all just Smash battles. And in the few weeks it has been out, I already have over 70 hours played, so clearly my complaints aren't holding me back much!

Although this is a newer version, I still feel nostalgia when playing. I love the wide array of new characters and I really appreciate that the game creators stay true to their individual fighting styles. Hoping for more of these games in the future!

Fun over & over again
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is absolutely fantastic. All of the fun and excitement you've come to expect from a Smash Bros. game is still there with new modes and so many new characters to unlock. There are a plethora of ways to play this game, both solo and with plenty of friends on & off-line. The menus and cut scenes are well done and keep the excitement going even when you're not in battle. This is a must have for any Switch owner!

Review for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Nintendo S
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch is an absolute must-have game for any fan of the series or fighting game enthusiast. I recently purchased it from BestBuy, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. First and foremost, the character roster in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is mind-blowing. With over 70 fighters to choose from, including beloved Nintendo characters, third-party icons, and DLC additions, there is a fighter for every playstyle and preference. The variety and depth of the roster ensure that every match is unique and exciting, keeping the gameplay fresh and engaging. The gameplay itself is fast-paced, exhilarating, and incredibly fun. The controls are tight and responsive, allowing for precise movements and satisfying combos. Whether you prefer strategic gameplay or just want to enjoy some chaotic brawling, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate caters to both casual and competitive players. The game strikes a perfect balance between accessibility for newcomers and depth for experienced players, making it enjoyable for players of all skill levels. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers a plethora of game modes and features. The classic "Smash" mode allows you to battle it out against friends or CPU opponents in various stages, with customizable rules to suit your preferences. The "Adventure Mode: World of Light" offers a captivating single-player experience, featuring an expansive map and challenging battles against an army of Spirits. The online mode allows you to test your skills against players from around the world, providing endless opportunities for competitive matches. Visually, the game is a treat for the eyes. The vibrant and colorful stages, along with the stunning character models and special effects, make each battle visually stunning. The attention to detail in the game's design is remarkable, capturing the essence of each character and their respective franchises. The soundtrack is equally impressive, featuring a vast collection of iconic music tracks from various Nintendo titles, adding to the overall immersion and nostalgia. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also benefits from continuous support and updates from Nintendo, with regular balance patches and new DLC fighters being added to the roster. This ongoing support ensures that the game remains fresh and exciting long after its initial release. If I were to nitpick, the online matchmaking could be improved. While it generally works well, occasional lag or connectivity issues can disrupt matches. However, this is a minor gripe compared to the overall enjoyment and content the game offers. In conclusion, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a masterpiece of a fighting game, and it is a must-own title for any Nintendo Switch owner. With its extensive character roster, addictive gameplay, variety of modes, stunning visuals, and exceptional sound design, the game delivers an unparalleled gaming experience. BestBuy provided a seamless purchasing experience, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Whether you're a fan of the series or a newcomer, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an absolute blast that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

8-player mayhem.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is the reason I got a Nintendo Switch, very fun and takes advantage of the joycon's ability to split. I've only played with 4 people on the same console, but it supports up to eight players. Controls are easy enough for my 4 year old to play, but timing, balancing, items, and levels, create a challenge for even seasoned players. Story mode is not as good as the wii's version, but the story's challenges are interesting, but lack the co-op. Unlocking characters while doing just casual fights felt rewarding, since it allowed for you to try out a new fighter, and a couple fights later another challenger appeared and you get to try that new character. There is a co-op online quick match which is a plus, but no co-op vs online friends. I purchased this game mostly for party play at home, so the online features are not as important to me. Overall 10/10

Simply Impressive
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its name. The level of care, attention to detail, and the unrivaled quantity of content in this game is astounding. For anyone who grew up as a gamer, there is something to love about this game. Its soundtrack alone is so expansive that it accounts for nearly 30 consecutive hours of music. The core hook of the game's single player content is World of Light, an adventure mode that features a large overworld map replete with battles to fight under unique conditions. As you win battles, you gain the game's equivalent of experience points to level up your team, as well as "Spirits." Spirits are still images of more than 1,200 characters from numerous games. Each grants a modifier, such as immunity to stage-specific hazards like fire, and they can be freely swapped out. Like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild before it, Smash Bros. is a quick pick-up-and-play experience. You can jump into Spirits mode, do a battle or two, and get a sense of accomplishment. It's intelligently designed to work with the play anywhere mentality around which the Switch as a console is focused. In addition to World of Light, there are traditional modes like Classic and All Stars. Some of the characters' classic mode quests will end with a unique boss battle; others end with Smash series bosses Master Hand and Crazy Hand. It isn't strong enough to encourage 74 playthroughs, but it is fun to do a few times through to experience the different end bosses. Multiplayer is frantic and chaotic, allowing players to play together with one console or against each other online. The online, unfortunately, isn't great. Low connection speeds can really hinder the experience, and there are not enough options to limit your online choices to simple 1v1 battles. Recognizing online's shortcomings, Smash Ultimate is really an incredible game. I've long believed that after the single player content well has dried up in a Smash game, it's the couch multiplayer that keeps people coming back. Smash Ultimate is a fast, frantic party-style fighting game. It is fun to play and is strongly recommended for every Switch owner.

My son loves to play this game for three years now
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My 7 year old son loves to replay this game repeatedly. He has 100% cleared the main story mode several times. He begged me to purchase all the expansion pass content from the Nintendo Switch eShop so I obliged. The 80 or so selectable fighters total with expansion pass doubled or tripled the replay value for my son’s enjoyment. This is a 10/10 game for my son and I to play together anytime anywhere. This game is a love letter to Nintendo players and video game history too with all of the easter eggs to discover. Highly recommend it for any Switch owner.

Super fun Game
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've played Smash since the original came out on the N64. I've always loved it and ultimate is no exception. The only thing I don't like is how many characters there are now. Variety is great and all, but at a certain point I think it gets to be too much. I'd still recommend it to anyone who loves fightng games and wants a way to entertain people at a party or game night
