I bought this NAS to use as a storage device for my movies/videos (both Full HD and 4K) and play them using my Shield TV and it’s been working wonderful for this purpose. Normally I don’t have too many users connected to it at the same time, but once I was reading (copying to a laptop) several GBs of video files while playing a Full HD movie at the same time (NAS --> Shield TV) and I didn’t have any issues at all, the movie played perfectly. I stuffed the NAS with one 8TB WD Red and a 2TB Surveillance HDD (I don’t recall the manufacturer), and used Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). So far so good. I’m planning to upgrade the 2TB HDD to 8TB by the end of the year, and SHR should make the process very easy. One feature that I was looking for to use a lot was Synology Download Station, but I found it to be very crippled on features and not useable at all with multiple download links (it downloads one and marks the rest as failed, no matter how many times I try, it is always the same). So I deducted a star for this. I’m not using any of the features that allow me to access my NAS from the Internet (outside my network), since I don’t really need this and I don’t want to expose myself to hackers trying to enter. I used the built in firewall to block all IP addresses except for the ones assigned to a couple of laptops and the Shield TV, and it works very well. Just make sure that your router will always assign the same IP address to your client device, or you may find yourself locked out of your own NAS (it happened to me once, good thing I remembered what the IP address was and manually changed it). Also, assigning usernames and passwords with different access restrictions is very easy. I made it like this to avoid the possibility of other family members deleting important stuff by mistake. I have some folders that they can’t see at all and some others with read only permissions. Great NAS for home use!

The Synology DiskStation is an amazing NAS. I got this after my Buffallo linkstation failed. My friend has one as well and suggested I look into this one. After some research, I figured it could be the right solution. After getting it, I setup all my files to it and it has been running strong. Synology offers so many apps you can use for just about everything you need. I couldnt be happier with this product. Setup was easy, I was able to install the hard drive without any issues, and it runs smooth without having to download any other software. Thanks Synology.

no issues with set up. only complaint is that the disks I had from another storage vendor weren't the same format. There appears to be a conversion routine, but after messing with it for a while I gave up and re-formatted the disks. Nothing important to lose anyway.

Decided to add a NAS to my home network and this was the best option for the price. Setup wasn't too difficult although the software could be a little more user friendly for less tech literate folks.

Have been debating getting a NAS for my home, and finally pulled the trigger. This was the best rated NAS for the cost, and I put a 2 TB NAS specific drive in it and have had no problems. There may be better software that can be used with it, but meets my needs well. Would like to have easier access while away from home, but I rarely need that so the included software works good enough.

Easy to set up. Uses "apps" to do each task you want. Can keep it in house to install an app to allow use outside your network like at work or for the family to access.

This is a well-designed NAS and was easy to set-up. The software is great. The only negative is that it is slightly under-powered for media server activities, so you should consider a higher model if that is your need.

This little machine works great. All of our media is on the box that we can share through the house. Works with backing up all of our phone photos and more. Can't say enough about Synology. I ended upgrading to the DS216+ which has a bit more power.
