awesome cover picture with the dragon, but true don't judge a book by its cover. thought it would be more interesting and have some action but it was very slow and never really picked the pace up.

I was a bit disappointed with this. One of the few movies studio ghibili misses it's mark. It was very slow until the end. Not a terrible
Movie I would give it a C+.

My wife and I watched this movie. She likes anime movies. Neither of us liked the movie. Some of the art work was good, but the plot was not so good.

It was alright, but not great. Someone who likes anime a lot would probably enjoy this film.

In my opinion,
ART:
Tales From Earthsea is a very visually pleasing film. The scenery is mostly quite vivid and detailed, a feature that has yet to disappoint me with Studio Ghibli films. The art is very good, the character designs vary only slightly from other Ghibli films like "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke," leaving it an obvious Ghibli with a little something different.
PLOT:
The story line starts off very promising. A mysterious force is causing wizards to lose their powers, the world's balance is out of wack, dragons are appearing, ect. The first scene introduces a couple of dragons that battle it out in a violent storm over a ship of bewildered sailors, which led me to believe the story will have a good amount of action and dragons in it, which is regrettably misleading. The king of the land is assassinated within the first few minutes by his seventeen-year-old son Arren who then steals his fathers sword and runs away. The story then focuses on Arren and a wizard named Sparrowhawk who takes Arren under his wing. One of the biggest disappointments for me was how slowly the story progressed. After the beginning it was mostly a lot of wandering around, and doesn't pick up until the very end; however, he few fight scenes in it are very well done. I personally like a plot that has a good amount of energetic rising action leading to the climax. Although, if you are in the mood for a slower film thats not too flashy then I'd recommend it. I probably would have enjoyed the film more if I had known it was slower to progress, but thats my fault for buying it before I did a little research. The slow progression aside, it the ending leaves a copious amount of unanswered questions that developed for me throughout the entire film, and did not seem to wrap it all up well. Don't get me wrong, I like a good story with a few unanswered questions that let your imagination conclude the rest, however, there were key elements that were developed throughout the course of the film were left either forgotten or unanswered.
On another note, the film did touch on some more emotional subjects briefly like slavery, drug trade, and abuse, which take the story to a deeper level. There are also morals on the preciousness of life, and the necessity of death, which allow the film a fair plot rating rather than poor.
ACTING
The voice acting in the film is fairly decent. There is a real emotion in each characters voice and it genuinely compliments each character's personality. Many of the characters have very quiet voices however, but you don't need to be afraid to turn the volume up because of the lack of frequent action sequences.
Over all I give it three stars. Again, I probably would have enjoyed the film more if I had known it was a slower paced one from the beginning, and had more dragons and magic. The stunning visuals make up for the slower plot to a certain degree. It is a good "directorial debut" for animator Goro Miyazaki son of Hayao Miyazaki, who is one of my favorites. It is a "flawed" film in plot, but has potential.

The art style alone sucked me in, but you really can't go wrong buying a movie made by the legendary Studio Ghibli. Although lesser-known and not as popular as other Ghibli works, Earthsea is an integral part of any Ghibli movie collection.

I thought it was an excellent movie for those who know the Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy and resulting books. For those who don't, the plot may seem a little weak. Then again, I enjoy most of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films. Total anime fan.

Like all the Studio Ghibli Blu-ray releases, this film is absolutely beautiful and well-written. Sometimes you forget it is an animated film, it is so realistic and well-done. :)

Not what was to be expected of a miyazaki film, but I think that's what made it good. It had a lot of action, and an in depth storyline.
