This TCL 55S425 was purchased new (05-19-2018) at Best Buy. It was great while it worked. The screen went black 06-09-2020. TCL support responded right away and finally advised it needed repaired. I am now watching my 12 year old Sony 32". Not happy,

The screen went black with white vertical lines in less than 24 hours. Best Buy guy said it had to do with some sort of firmware upgrade that can’t be reversed. He also said it was a common problem with TCL’s. It was very disappointing. The thing was beautiful for the short time it worked. I rolled the dice on this cheaper TV and lost. Best Buy refunded with no problems.

I was waiting for this TV for a long time. I have the S405 49"on my room and has work wonders for a almost a year now. I was going to buy the Sony x900e for my new living room but decided to wait for this TCL since the S series has been good to me. Now let me start by just saying I'm really disappointed. Waited so long for this TV and I seem to have same issue as everyone. Don't get me wrong, the colors in this TV are just perfect(for the price). The HDR is gorgeous and the peak brightness for me is more than OK. Dolby and 4k videos just look stunning. This would be the perfect TV , that is , if you don't mind the vertical banding that has plagued this line up and is destroying what could've been the best budget TV in 2018. I tried a second unit and now this one has Vertical Banding plus dark shades on the 4 corners of the TV which others have also stated. This TV should not have passed QC. Is too many to not consider a recall. It's not even a hit or miss. You have 99.9% chance of a miss. Now I got 11 days left but I'm not sure what to do. I want to like the TV cause colors are great. I won't even mind the dark corners , it's just that vertical banding that really is an issue. The worst part is customer service. I called them, open a case. sent photos, and they basically told me, "this is normal in led TV's. WTF. I'm like no way!! The representative told me , that if I went ahead and exchange for a third one, I might still have the same issue. They basically told me. "Yes, all our TV's are plagued with VB". I mean wow, worst support ever, they don't even offer partial refunds or replacements maybe because they don't have actually non vertical banding units to replace with? Anyways 2 stars. Like I said, great TV , great colors, great contrast, low input lag, many many options , love Roku but doomed with Vertical Banding. If they don't offer me a replacement or a partial refund or some solution in the nex 2 days I might just go for the Sony x900e 55".

Best TV I've seen under $1000

Brief preface: this is our first 4K TV. We've been slow adopters, holding off until we could get something decent under $400. Our last purchase, a 40" 1080p, was only a few years old but still worked pretty well. When decent sub-$400 4K sets with HDR began shipping in 2017, we started looking. There are good options in that range, but the more we looked, the more I was willing to consider TVs beyond the budget collection. The TCL P6 seemed to be the sweet spot between frugal and feature-packed. CES 2018 happened not long after we started the search, and we saw a preview of the 6 Series successor to the P6. The improvements convinced us to wait. We're glad we did. PROS: * The picture quality is stunning. My wife, a wedding photographer, is extremely picky about color, skin tone in particular. She's hated every TV we ever owned...until this one. You can fine-tune the image, but the broad presets - vivid, normal, Movie, etc - do quite well. Dolby Vision movies look spectacular. The 96 "contrast control zones" give you darker blacks and brightness that has to be seen to be appreciated. Lava, explosions, stained glass - I haven't felt this wowed by television since we moved from an old tube TV to HD. When we went to buy this we were first shown the 5 series, which was okay but not mind-blowing. When we asked, "are you sure this is the 6 series?" and found the real thing, the difference was night and day. It's that good. And it's worth the few hundred extra dollars if you can afford it. If you're upgrading from HDTV, you may find the look...odd...at first. Almost too bright, almost too "live." We went back to shows like NCIS. On older televisions, there's a "TV look" that's slightly muddy, but it's all we ever knew. with this set, you can actually tell how the film crew is lighting a scene. It looks more like you're watching them film the show, instead of the show itself. It takes some getting used to. If you prefer it, "Movie" mode seems to reproduce the effect. Otherwise, give yourself time to adjust to Soap Opera mode. * The set itself looks good. The trim has is a brushed metal look, rather than black plastic. For how big the thing is, it's easy enough for one person to move around. It's not incredibly thin, but it's the thinnest we've owned to date. * We went with the Best Buy Roku remote, which doesn't have the voice control or WiFi connectivity. We do have a Roku Ultra with that remote, and it's been a mixed bag; we almost never use the voice search, and the remote frequently froze up and had to be reset. This remote does need a clear line of sight but otherwise works very well. It's a simple, clean set of buttons; it's a nice change from the too-many-buttons remotes we're used to. Nearly every button gets used. The Roku interface has been easy to navigate. * If you want to cut the cable cord, this TV will let you cut a lot of them. If you're willing to use WiFi and forego a sound bar, you need only the TV power cable. We were able to clean up a rat's nest of coax, Ethernet, USB, HDMI and other cables from our set up. Until we have wireless power, this is as simple as you can get. But if you do need connections, the ethernet networking is blazing fast, and you have three HDMI inputs including one ARC port, one USB input, and coax for over the air antennae. The built-in Roku frees up one HDMI port, though if you prefer Fire TV or Apple TV, you can still use them easily enough. CONS * 55" is a LOT of television, and its footprint is flush with the width of the set. Unless you have a very wide table to put it on, or plan to mount on the wall, you may have to upgrade your entertainment center. We ended up buying a couple of crates and a 1" thick board 52" wide. Others have put the TV's legs on backwards, pointing inward, to fit them on their narrower furniture. For a while we left it on the floor; it's big enough to be pretty watchable even that low, but for safety you'd prefer to have it elevated foot or more off the floor. * the audio is okay, but not great. With a picture this good, you may find yourself disappointed by the sound, and start shopping for a sound bar. That's what we're doing. * The viewing radius is pretty good, but not as good as more expensive sets, particularly OLED. Bottom line: For televisions under $1000, the only set better than this one is its 65" big sister. But you'd better have a whole lot of empty space in your house to fit the darn thing. If they'd offered this in a 50" size we likely would have gone with it, but we're getting used to the 55". It's near cinematic. It was worth the wait.

We were remodeling our basement and bought two of these TVs. By the time we were ready to mount the second one, cracks everywhere on the screen. No damage to the box or packaging. No signs of previous use and return. Best Buy said tough luck, past the return period. TCL doesn’t know anything. According to their customer service, their technician can’t even repair it. Utter garbage.

First let me start by stating my review with 5 stars is based on price and comparison to other tvs at the price I purchased this set for. This is not a 5 star TV in terms of overall TV excellence. I would say the TV is 4 stars if we aren't considering price at all. Negatives first. Banding yes there is banding. My set if I had to rate the banding on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being the worst I would give it a 3. What is a 3? Slight bands about 1 inch thick from the top of the TV down to the middle in about 3 spots on the TV. It is rarely noticeable during most content but at times I can notice it during movies. Dark spots. Yes all 4 corners are noticeably darker than the rest of the set. It's about 1inch of darker spots in the corner. Brightness. My tv sits right in front of a bay window. Directly in the sun. The TV is very bright and easy to watch in this environment. Standard content as well as hdr content gets very bright. Picture. The picture looks very good on all content 720 and up. I have not watched any standard Def content on it. Black's. Awesome blacks. I upgraded from a Plasma and the blacks are actually better than my Plasma but that's probably due to the age of the Plasma. Space scenes look amazing on this set. HDR. The hdr performance is very very good. Combined with the black levels movies like the last jedi look amazing. Motion handling. It's average. I don't like smooth motion so I disabled that. Most content I don't notice motion issues. The content I do is something like racing or hockey. However it's on par and even better than tvs in this segment. Under $700. Bottom line from me? I bought the TV for $540. I just looked for another set in a comparable range and performance because I thought I might take it back due to the negatives mentioned above. For my viewing and requests (bright viewing area, and want great hdr performance) there was nothing close. The vizio p is out there but it's $200 more and I am unwilling to pay $200 more. All tvs $550-650 don't come close to this one, except for the TCL p from last year. That set is $550 but it doesn't get as bright as this one so I am not swapping for that. If you are OK spending $750 get the vizio p no doubt. If you're not in a very bright room like I am get the tcl p from last yr. If you are In a bright room, have a rock bottom price of $600 which is what this set is at now and want the best hdr performance at this price point grab this 6 series. I can say if the banding was any worse I'd just take this back and wait for a sale on black Friday for the vizio p.

Had it for over a month with no buyers remorse. Picture is good, features are good, it's easy to use, and overall an incredible value. The only bad, the corners have slight grey areas on commercials with one plain color screen. THEY ARE NOT THERE DURING NORMAL VIEWING. I thought rmthis would be more annoying than it really is before I bought it. Also the refresh rate isn't bad, but not great either. Not bad enough to ever be annoying, but not that of a $1500 TV. I use this for videogames (xbox one), movies and streaming. Very satisfied with my purchase! Oh also I was worried with the reviews of "banding" and I have noticed no such issues.

I really like this tv, the picture quality is really good, and hdr looks beautiful, Roku is pretty awesome though I have an Apple TV 4k so I don’t use the roku features too much. But there are time when I’m playing a game or just when the camera pans left or right, and up and down that you can see black vertical and horizontal lines/Silhouettes mostly on sold colors like white/black/grey, it’s especially noticeable when playing NBA 2k18, because the camera pans left and right and you can see the lines on the court. Other than that the tv is beautiful I just wish it didn’t have those banding issues, because once I see it it’s all I can think about and it takes me out of what ever I am watching or playing. I would rate this higher maybe even 5 stars if the banding issue was fixed.

This 'smokes' the 5 series in Blacks & Brightness

So after a week in of owning the 55" 5 series, I decided to buy the 55" 6 series to compare the two side by side (and of course return one of them based on my findings). I'd been reading and watching all the reviews online about the 6 series and was starting to question my purchase of the S515. Everyone was talking about "dark inky blacks" and "superior brightness for colors" in the 6 series...well, they were absolutely RIGHT, and they were not exaggerating. The differences in contrast and brightness is undoubtedly Night-and-Day as the R615 absolutely dominates in these areas. The blacks are pitch black like the screen is off (without reflection of course). Letterbox film no longer shows dark grey (slight blue hue) bars on the top and bottom. Instead, the bars look solid black like those parts of the screen are turned off. The same goes for any screen with just a few white words in the middle of the screen, as the rest of the screen around them looks black as it does when it's off...absolutely amazing! This of course is the result of the 'local dimming' feature in the 6 series, something that the 5 series lacks. The local dimming works over the entire screen giving depth to everything from landscapes and vegetation, cityscapes, people, and textures. However, if it wasn't for the high brightness capabilities working in conjunction, the "pop" off the screen 3d effect wouldn't be possible. This_tv_is_bright! Not blinding (can be if you want), it just makes highlights and colors so crisp, that colors just pop off the screen. You have to really see it to understand. Everything looks so visually "rich", yet colors and scenes remain realistic looking. The 5 series has a great picture, but the 6 series is pure eye candy! At the time of writing this, I've already decided to return the 55" 5 series as there is no question. There is absolutely no doubt that the 6 is staying with me. The price difference is SOOOOOOO justified and worth every penny! As far as all the complaints about dirty screens and banding, mine is all good thankfully. I say, if you've got the funds, the 6 series is the way to go. My 5 series has lightbleed from the bottom corners, and in dark scenes it's very noticeable and kinda annoying...but on the 6, it's non existent...blacks are as black as a moonless Night!...and with absolutely zero light bleed. Might I suggest a few apps or programs to put on the screen after first purchasing the 6. For starters, the "Dolby Vision app" that's preinstalled on roku, and "Altered Carbon" on Netflix....and just sit back and watch the 'local dimming' and phenomenal brightness work their magic...WOW! The build quality differences between the two series is pretty substantial. The 55" 5 series is plastic trim and the thinnest top section is kinda flimsy. Also, when looking along the top edge from one of the sides, the screen's top trim edge on mine has mild curves and waves in it, and the top right corner kinda leans further back than the rest of the screen...it basically looks a bit warped. The 6 series however, is beautifully trimmed in sturdy, dark brushed metal and looks and feels expensive. No flimsiness like the 5. This review is from the 'present' owner of both the TCL 55" 5 & 6 series so I feel I've got hands on experience with both now. If you want the eye candy visuals and features of what's found in TVs costing 2 to 3 times the cost, the 6 will get you there!

Bought my 55R615 5/4/18. No complaints! Worked perfectly right out of the box. Glad I waited and got the 2018 6 Series instead of the P607. Need more 4K/UHD content. Tested my unit with 4K test pattern and video tests. Passed all with ease. I was worried from some of the reviews? 4K + 1080p content looks great. I am purging most of my SD content needs upscaling, but not worth the effort for SD. Tv notify’s you with a little HDR icon when you have True HDR content, cool! I like how the stand’s can be reversed if you have a small stand/ Table. Bought the enhanced remote (voice control/commands) works great. Paring took a whole 2 seconds...(read the manual!) Proof that TCL is using Advanced Alien Technology. TCL 6 Series TV’s ($3000 4K/HDR Smart Tv for $600 bucks.) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ MD. TCL 55R615 Roku + Enhanced Remote + Apple 2TB Time Capsule (4K content) + Bose Soundlink II + 50Mbs internet (AT&T).

CNET and a few other tech sites pushed this tv hard. For the price it had impressive specs minus the native 120 refresh rate it was only a 60. The tech sites were correct and I now fully agree with CNET awarding this budget LED tv of the 2018. Look if you want eye blistering super bright nit output THIS TV ISN’T FOR YOU BUT GET READY TO BUST YOUR WALLET if you want those high nit numbers. This tv is meant for a budget conscious consumer with lets face it minimal disposable income but who wants to experience 4K with HDR. During black friday this tv remained at $650 at every retailer except Best Buy who had it at $600. Thankfully I held off on a Black Friday purchase and wouldn’t you know it mid December for just 7 days Best Buy dropped it down to $500! I bought it and have zero regrets! Roku and picture quality as good as the reviews have said really it’s that simple nothing complicated here. I have a June 2018 build date and I have no screen light deformities whatsoever. I tell you I was nervous when Best Buy brought me up the tv from their storage space (tv box was not on the show room floor) because the box was super dirty with thick brown rust like dust on the box and also beat up I was initially worried it was an open box but I was limited in time so I just bit the bullet and took it (got my jacket and car really dirty carrying that box though grrr). C’mon Best Buy a little more professionalism please at least wipe down the box that goes a long way to making a customer happy. I also just took the hand cart myself to my car because after they brought me the tv they just dipped lol. Anyways I rambled on enough bottom line this tv is absolutely worth it at $600 and if they drop it down to $500 again don’t hesitate BUY IT ASAP!

    Great 4K TV

This TCL 4K is a great tv. When I began doing research for a 4K set I didn’t even know who TCL was. However I’m glad I took the chance and purchased this set. It comes with high marks from both CNET (editors choice 2018) and RTINGS. The tv has some awesome features the first being it’s a smart tv powered by the roku system which allows you to use all streaming services wirelessly and allows you to configure what services you put on your home screen for easy access. Second it supports both HDR formats. HDR10 which is the industry standard and PS4s preferred format. It also supports Dolby Vision which is the format Dolby has created and if you have the 4K Netflix package is the format you’ll see on most of their content. It’s a nice little feature to have and it looks amazing on the tv. Everything I’ve watched in 4K is great. Standard cable box programming is good with no issues but it’s hard to judge a 4K tv without 4K sources. The tv will upscale an original PS4 but you won’t get the 2160 resolution. The one thing I will say is the tcl brand is subject to some dirty screen effect, plus some banding. I have not seen that on my set and ran a test on YouTube to make sure. Just run that and if you aren’t happy with the results take it back. I did have one issue with my first set. It would randomly “crash” shut off and restart after about a week. However I returned it for a new one and all is good. Just be aware that this could happen but the good greatly outweighs the bad on this set. Also if you are trying to decide between this and the 4 or 5 series. Your choice should be the 6 without a doubt. Finally I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the remote. It’s a remote it works perfectly for what it’s designed. It is small but the minimal amount of time you are using it, it serves the purpose as intended. Plus if you can manage to snag this tv on a sale like I did (499.99) down from 599.99 pull the trigger immediately you will not get a tv with these features and ratings in that price point. Overall I am pleased with the tv.

First of all, I would like to say my 55" unit DOES shows vertical banding. HOWEVER, it is extremely difficult to notice during normal usage unless you really looking for it. I used rtings DSE test images when I first setup the TV and I am happy with the result. Yes, banding is there, but it is not as bad as some people claimed. (at least on my unit) I've only noticed the banding issue once when I looking at a cloudy sky panning scene. During the past 2 weeks, I used the TV for gaming, movies watching, and PC screen. The clarity and colour are just great. Very pops and natural without over exaggerated like some other model I had used. The TV can also produce very blight images and high local contrasts for HDR contents. All and all, excellent TV for its 600 price tag. I highly recommend this TV to people who like gaming, 4k streaming or anything that offers colourful images. You won't be disappointed. But I do suggest people who planned to use this TV for heavy sport watching and/or those who want to setup this TV in living room should considering other option due to banding and very narrow viewing angle.

This tv performs like a tv that costs twice maybe even 3 times as much as this is selling for, the features that this brings is unbelieveable for the price, dolby vision, hdr, 96-120 contrast zones for near perfect blacks and believe me I am very pixel picky and I was skeptical about buying this because I own 2 OLEDS with perfect blacks and when I got this I couldn't believe how satisfied I was with it. I literally scanned for dead pixels in a white screen from a youtube video and I was happy I did not have any, then check how good the blacks were and I set the zone settings to high which made me very happy for the black screen I was witnessing =]. The color, sharpness, picture quality I love. Their upscaling is up their with the best brands. The brightness you get with this tv is more than good enough. You will not regret getting this. Especially at this price. Oh, also to add this is a great gaming tv, very low input lag. The next time I have to get a tv I am going straight to tcl for their budget high end model. The stuff they are doing is amazing.

This TV should be on your shopping list if you want a good to great quality picture, fantastic features, easy to use and VALUE! Is it an LG OLED? No. But it costs 1/3 of an OLED. We have an LG OLED, it's a great TV, fantastic black levels. We put this in the bedroom and it is perfect there. With it having Roku, we reduced a component in that chain simplifying the setup. Setup was easy, the only hard part was ARC, have to turn on CEC (which I hate) for it to work, had to dig into the manual for that. The manual is pretty good, it was easy to find this setting using the PDF via search. I cannot comment on it's wireless networking as I have a network drop for it and the other network enabled devices there but setting up the Roku part was very easy as was updating the firmware. Apps downloaded and installed fairly quickly, on par with the Roku Ultra it replaced. We have not watch UHD blurays yet, but 4K content via Netflix is great. If you are on a budget, or have a high end TV and want one for another location. Get this TV!

For the price, the picture quality and HDR performance is amazing. This cod easily be a $900-$1,200 TV. If you game, this is a great TV with really low lag imput and near perfect 4K performance. I have not really run into the vertical banding issues that others have, I can pick up a VERY slight banding if I display a non moving bright white screen, but it doesn't impact the TV at all. If you look at a $600 LG or Samsung TV...this thing blows them out of the water. The large amount of local dimming arrays are, really, what sets it aaprt. You simply won't find that on any sub $1,000 TV. I definitely recommend this TV.

This tv has nice bright standard, and HDR as well as dolby vision picture, video game lag is low, local dimming is really nice, overall picture quality is great, only time i can see a problem is at an angle, but contrast and black levels are great, speed of the menus are great, this tv is an excellent buy , only 2 problems i could see is viewing at an angle, and only having 3 hdmi ports, also some people might not like the couple ads on the menu of the tv, but other than that this is a great buy... oh.. and for the people like me that don’t have super wide tv stands, the legs also can be install facing inward

I had been looking to replace the 40" Vizio E-Series in my home office with a 4K HDR option. I stream via Roku for TV/Movies/Music, so I knew if I upgraded to 4K, I would also need an updated Roku for the home office as the Roku 3 doesn't support 4K. I read the reviews of this TV on CNET and Rtings.com, and at $499 on sale, I decided to test it out. After running the TV for about 100 hours to let the pixels really get grooved, I did the calibration settings using CNET and Rtings.com as a guide. The result is a phenomenal picture, and I'm so glad I bought this TV. The contrast is great, the 4K looks really good, and the colors are great. I did not have this TV professionally calibrated, and for a home office or a bedroom, do you really need to spend as much on calibration as you may spend on the TV? No! Use the specs provided by the professional reviewers, tweak to your liking, and enjoy YOUR TV. TIP: Download the Roku app for your smartphone or other device, and you can listen to the TV through headphones connected to the smartphone/tablet/etc. This is one of the main differences between the remote for the Roku TV and the remote for a regular Roku. The downside is that there is banding on this TV in certain scenes (not a lot, but sometimes there). Video processing may not be as good as high-end TVS: Some 4K scenes will be breathtaking whereas some scenes may look a tad soft, but that could easily be a direct result of source material as opposed to the TV. This is NOT an OLED nor is it a premium TV like the Vizio Quantum X, high-end Samsungs, or LG OLEDs. This is a value/budget 4K HDR TV (with Dolby Vision), 96 full-array backlighting zones, and Dolby Atmos pass-through from HDMI ARC. I'm seriously considering buying another one of these for my master bedroom as my 2009 Vizio is starting to die. This product review is from an actual purchase. I have not been compensated financially for this review. I did receive an email from Best Buy indicating if I would review my purchase I would get 25 points, but I would have written the same review had I not received any rewards points.

I got this on sale for 399.99 55" model. For that kind of money its a killer deal. picture quality is great. local dimming is good not a lot of blooming. motion is good most of the time has some stutter (when watching an F1 race on tv) good low input lag. I have to say the IR remote is lousy! I often have to press the button 2-3 time to get is to work. Roku system is good just a little slow some times.
